Jana is missed. Her style is extinct now. Such amazing net play and power. A magical balance.

Jana played brilliant in 91 Australian Open, beating Steffi in QF and Arantxa in SF, before losing Monica in the final. Her games were badly missed.

Everyone was wondering how this match would go and how both players would react after their great wins in the quarter finals. Jana had just beaten Steffi Graf for the first time and Arantxa had upset the new US Open champion Gabriela Sabatini.

Arantxa was so aggressive in these early stages of her career. Her backhand was the most powerful in the game back then when she ripped it. It would be a weapon even in the power tennis of today. Her backhand lost that explosive power just a few years later than this match. It was always mysterious to me why her backhand declined? Always great seeing matches from this era. These are two incredible tennis players.

I think in 90-91 Arantxa was trying to broaden her game, hit harder and be more aggressive. But there were a couple of problems. She ended up making lots of errors (if you watch her 91 french open final against Seles she really lost that one with errors and trying to out-slug a player who was better at it than she was). Which leads into the second point. There were a number of players who could play that hard hitting game better than Arantxa, and she was playing into their hands by trying to out hit them. So, Arantxa's game matured in a different way. She developed a brilliant slice backhand, lots of variety and an all court game. She could hit hard when she wanted to, but knew that often wasn't an intelligent way to play.

ASV's problem was her forehand was so bad. Yes she had a great backhand, but her forehand exposed her. In this match, Jana made the mistake of approaching most of the time on ASV's backhand. Watch Steffi and Monica play ASV... they constantly targeted her forehand. It's a big reason they both had solid records against her.

Darkeney. Agreed. ASV had a very pushy/loopy forehand and she hit over it more than through it. Her serve and return were solid, she had good volleys, amazing court coverage, a very good backhand and a very, very average forehand. She primarily hit it cross court with angles and was decent at that but it was never an aggressive, penetrating shot. Jana hit very penetrating shots, including her low biting slice.

@@darkeneydarkeney8092 her running forehand was awesome as she could feed off pace. but she really struggled to genereate her own pace

Some unusual stats about both players at the Australian Open. This was actually Arantxa's first Australian Open - she didn't play in 89 or 90. An indication perhaps of how for a long time, the Australian Open was something of the poor relation of the grand slams and many top players used to skip it. As for Jana, she herself skipped the Australian Open in 1996, 1997 and 1998. In fact, she never got past the quarter final again after this, losing in 4th round in 1992, 2nd round in 1993, QF in 1994, 4th round in 1995 and 3rd round when she took part again in 1999.

That is interesting. Conversely for ASV it was a very successful GS over many years: Multiple semis and two finals. Thanks for these stats.

I'm really interested in who these ladies have doubled up with in mixed during the slams, I was just reading that in 1994 ASV partnered Chris Bailey at Wimbledon as WC. I don't think Bailey played much more after that actually.

@@dm7170I know Jana used to play with Jim Pugh a lot. They won the Australian and US Open in 1988, and the Australian and Wimbledon in 1989. After that, Jana seems to have largely given up mixed. She only played Wimbledon in 1990, with Pugh, and lost in the semis. Nothing in 1991. In 1992 a second round French Open loss with John Fitzgerald and a quarter final at Wimbledon with Todd Woodbridge. She only played one mixed doubles slam after that, reaching the 1994 US Open final with Todd Woodbridge.

@@dm7170Arantxa seems to have played with a number of partners over the years. Of the ones I could find, she reached the 1989 French Open final with Horacio De la Peña, win the 1990 French with Jorge Lozano, 1991 Australia Final with Emilio Sanchez, 1992 Australian final with Todd Woodbridge, won the 1992 French and 1993 Australian with Woodbridge. Then in 2000, Australian Open final with Woodbridge and winning the 2000 US Open final with Jared Palmer.

@@th8257 That's impressive that she almost did the double at RG in '89. I think Paz knocked her out of singles in '90 1st round so that may have actually helped her win that XD Slam that year. Thanks for the researching

Love Jana. Did she ever hit a topspin backhand ? Never see her hit over the ball on backhand. Like Graf , she uses constant slice. Looking to come in. Graff did it till she got forehand.
