Spot on. I'll add that most people forget how hard it was to learn anything at the very beginning. You know what's incredibly difficult? Language. Yet here we all are - even the least brightest of us - doing it effortlessly, translating meaning to sounds back and forth instantaneously. That awkward gap where you have to do that "intermediate" process that feels awkward at the learning stage is what puts people off. But that's exactly what you have to go through to get to any worthwhile result. The key then is to see it as a worthwhile result. Many see arcade stick as just an alternative choice that doesn't really change the outcome of anything. That part is harder to communicate as most people just oversimplify with some logic like "oh this guy won EVO on pad so that proves pad is just as good." Curious how you'd handle that line of thinking. Admittedly, I find it hard to explain!

I kinda wonder though which is really more accurate, like I was playing on an Xbox series X d-pad and then I got an arcade stick and and then when I look on the training mode where it displays the inputs it's it's pretty difficult to consistently only input diagonals, the stick always seems to transition from one of the diagonals to one of the side since the diagonal is just the combination of two side switches there is usually a few frames in between the diagonal and going back to neutral where one of the sides is registered.

Your piano analogy is bang on. You NEVER try to play both hands, full speed on the rip, unless it's a pattern you are already familiar with. First you break down left hand, right hand, then both. And if you can't play it slow, you can't play it fast! Very thoughtful content. You have enthusiasm for all your pursuits it seems.

thanks for this video man! literally just bought a stick last week and i play tekken. Felt so overwhelmed lol i couldn’t move as good as i did on pad and i was struggling to do electrics when it was very easy on pad. I really wanted to pull my hair out, ill try and play a platformer so i’m actually enjoying the game while at the same time building those neural pathways thanks for the advice!!

I almost lived in the arcades when i was growing up in Japan and had used an arcade stick actively from 1992-2018, so arcade stick use was already in my backbone and i mentioned this because when i started playing Tekken more seriously in 2018. Electrics and wavedashing and K-backdashing and good sidestepping were still super difficult for me for a good while even though i was familiar with stick use and i'm still no JDCR or even close. So Tekken offered a whole new level of stick movement memorizing for me and i love the game for that and i will never switch to a hit box or any other method because to me an arcade stick will always be the most interactive and fun way to play.

I have a stick on the way, and my plan for DDP is to do what I’ve been doing to warm up on pad: the level 4 boss glitch gives a large amount of room to fly around, and flying precisely from the 1st bomb slot to the 2nd, back to the 1st, and to the 3rd has been pretty useful for warming up horizontally. I struggle consistently doing it pixel-perfect though... I’m looking forward to arcade stick.

I can't believe it's been 10 years+ since I first started learning the arcade stick. You really do take for granted what you learn in life, it's just like riding a bike. It was when DOA5 came out on ps3 that I decided to buy a real arcade stick (Hori) and finally make the switch.

Despite how old the video is, the information holds true. Im brand new into using an arcade stick, having put it together myself, with the intention of learning Tekken 8 with it. Tall ask for someone whose only used an arcade stick twice in his life (once when i was trying my brother's Hori Fighting Edge in other games, and when my friend built an Arcade Cab and i played Mortal Kombat on it), but i thought with enough drive: i can do it. Having heard you mention it was "like playing a piano" i could definitely see that making some semblance, if i was more right-hand dominant (and i built the thing in the standard config, not a south paw style), my hand thats waggling the stick like im choking a chicken is my best hand, and I'm still technically learning what sorta gripper i am. I did however actually try a game am okay with afterwards, before watching the video, was playing Tenchu on it and its definitely good, double-tap inputs i need to work on, but otherwise it played fine, im sure i will grasp playing with it more and more as time goes on, but i was kinda hoping to have it already somewhat memorised by today (Saturday for me) so i can nail my brother on Tekken. But im still a long way to go

well i bought a stick for tekken a week ago. Theres progress tho. Something i found out that helped my own stick movements while not even practicing (youy know breakes are nice) is just watching some nice handcam tekken matches and watch other people using sticks. you kinda emulate things and movements you see

With your piano analogy, ironically Mozart pieces are often among the first you learn XD. Really great video, your recommendation to play simpler games first seems so obvious and yet it never even occurred to me. Previously I considered getting an arcade stick for Tekken, and more recently for shmups, but never went through with it because the thought of playing Tekken on a stick was just terrifying. I might start shopping around now... I've been long suspecting that movement in a shmup may be easier with an arcade stick than the joysticks on a controller.

Thanks for the vid. An interesting topic that I’m learning about with my Sega Lindbergh cabinet with a PS3 conversion. Some games just outright cannot be played due to a fixed button configuration that doesn’t work with an arcade layout. Many do however, and they’re the ones I seek out. Dead Cells has been a real challenge for me. No doubt the devs make these games with the console controller in mind. It’s interesting playing games that are clearly inspired by the arcades genre but have no thought of anyone ever playing them on an arcade stick. An example is Resogun on PS3. It only is possible with twin sticks. On the PS4 it’s fine as you can use the buttons for forward and backwards shooting. Since this game was inspired by William’s Defender I though the PS3 version’s controls were overlooked.

Yeah...I need this. Ok, so here in the Philippines. Retro Arcades are stupid rare. I found this Strikers 1945-2 thing in a cheap local mall running on one of those "Astro City" cabs and I want to show the locals how its done. The leaderboards are actually populated! With initials and scores that have a 01 at the end to signify continues! I wanna show em how its done, but i'm a slimy keyboard boi, i can't live without my Arrow Keys and fingers firmly glued to the Z and C keys and sometimes pushing X or A for Hypers.

it was weird. I got a stick about a month ago and the first 10 minutes was terrible. But idk what happened, but everything after my first 3 resets of darius gaidien felt natural. I haven't been an arcade in 5 years and even then I only went when I was nearby, (none around me, arcades were at mexico where I'd spend some vacations on, they still had arcades there, not sure about now though) so it was this really weird and magical experience those first 10 minutes of my first arcade stick

Great advice. In my case I started stick with extremely difficult games like Jim Power for SNES and Gun.Smoke arcade, other really hard arcade games, since those were the games I was already playing on pad. My friend had gotten this Hori RAP3 at a swap shop very cheap. I had heard the madcatz sticks were super smooth. My thoughts on sticks were based on the USA sticks that were super rigid, harder to move, etc. When I tried this RAP3 I adapted almost immediately and was able to play very well with little practice. I was really impressed with how smooth these japanaese sticks were. So I ended up getting a RAP4 a little later. I started using the stick more due to some hand numbness issues with the pad (Nerve damage from weight lifting). So the stick allowed me to play longer. I can definately play platformers competantly with a stick but havent levelled up my skill to match my pad skill yet for those. On shooters its very close though. I think im starting to lean toward using sticks for shooters by default. Really getting into it now.

@@TheElectricUnderground Nice. Great to get that feedback. I prefer feedback from real experienced players over just reading about all the nuances. I can understand why youd go with stick , especially with long sessions regularly. Thats a good reason for me to do it more and more as well. This made me think about it. I was keyboard only but I'll try to get into the arcade stick, because if there is a convention (in my area there are 3 per year) and there's the retro gaming section, I wanna be at my maximum. . I don't know if anyone is having the same issues as me, but the most difficult thing for me is timing my stick with the button press, because of the travel time on the stick and the almost instant button press I am getting constant miss inputs and it drives me insane. I practiced for an hour or so and could do a decent back dash cancel with minimal failures, but punishing or doing a simple 60 dmg combo is extremely hard especially online.

Good video! I'll remember these tips if I ever try to transition. Can you give any reason or example why stick would be superior? (specifically for shmups)... Other than just "because that's what all the best players use because all the other best players use it... and also that it was the default input method for arcade from the start, and so those players got good on it by default". Kinda like how Dvorak keyboard layout is supposed to be technically better, but most people still use Qwerty anyway and can be very fast. Or arguing about audio software DAWs, when really you can still make amazing sounding stuff on any of them. I'm usually of the opinion that, in general, how you use your tools is at least as important as what tools you have, if not moreso. But also, I wouldn't want to try to cut a deadbolt with kid scissors if I could just get some bolt cutters. Wasn't Promethius a keyboard player? I'm a keyboard player myself for shmups, although I think my technique is a bit different than the usual. For movement, I use the numpad - 8,4,2,6, with a finger on 8, 4, 6, (kind of like wasd) and then thumb on 2. There is no delay from moving a finger between up and down like with many players I've seen. Also, do you have any recommendations of a good stick? I bought one a few years ago, but it was just a $40 Mayflash. I wanted to like it, but I could just tell that it wasn't as responsive as it needed to be, so I didn't use it very much. I've seen the Hori RAP 4, and it looks really good. But not sure if I can justify the $150, as I hardly even enjoy playing video games anymore... But then I wonder, but hey, maybe if I had a better input method, I would enjoy them more again :P Anyway, thanks for the videos, I've watched a handful now and bookmarked others to watch later. They're really well organized, and always super informative. I'm still using the low latency MAME that you tweaked. Maybe I'll even consider joining the patreon at some point. Keep up the great work!

Hey my dude, thanks for all the awesome comments! (I love when people go through my past videos and comment on them). I'd be happy to recommend a stick to you, what systems are you looking to play on, because that will really influence what stick I recommend. Also, are you comfortable with working with the electronics of the arcade stick, because you can drastically reduce the price and still get top tier quality with just a little bit of modding.
@organicio
@organicio 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUnderground It would pretty much be exclusively on PC, so USB. I'm moderately comfortable with modding -- I modded the D-Pad on my PSP, also the D-Pad on my GPD XD, (and a couple other ghetto D-Pad mods) and constructed a home DDR pad out of wood one time, although someone else did all the wood measuring and cutting and stuff cuz I'm not as good at that kind of stuff. Oh and one time I built my own electronic drumkit, but it was ghetto as HELL. I've also done repairs on an Xperia play and misc other stuff, but sometimes I fuck things up if they're tiny and delicate and accidentally tear ribbon cables or something like that. But I probably couldn't screw an arcade stick up too bad... Maybe :P I feel like the main thing I would want in an arcade stick would be something with a VERY "short throw" (I think I'm using that term correctly?), in other words, the distance that the stick actually travels from left to right would not be very far... This way, theoretically you could move it faster between the directions. Also probably seems like noticeable tactile feedback would be important, not necessarily too loud of a click, but like a feeling that "Yes, the stick has reached all the way to the left, and therefore you don't have to press anymore". As you very well know, milliseconds count, and if your brain is wasting milliseconds not being completely sure it's done moving, that's not good. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but tactile feedback is so important in these kind of applications. I guess my best analogy by experience would be using keyboards for typing. The difference between using a good keyboard and a shit keyboard can be massive. One more random thing I'll throw in just while I'm totally geeking out is: Have you ever tried adjusting USB polling times to get lower input latency? I read about it a while back and tried it once, but wasn't able to get it to work. More details about my failed attempt are on my defunct (and laughable) blogspot whose sole purpose was/is simply for me and my friend to compete against each other in retro games, here: retrogameclub.blogspot.com/2016/02/usb-polling-speed.html Heeh. Thanks again for letting me geek out with you today :) Did you say you had a discord?

How about converting from right stick to left stick? I tried converting to left stick, i always mis actuated the left stick, and I was first exposed to percise input commands in Street Fingher 2. Then I found a Rainbow Edition SF2 with a lefty vs righty setup, played Righty, and pulled off specials like no one's business. The only reason why I died was because the Wacky specials. It's partly due to my history of being a "maze game" player, and most let you choose between right hand and left, so I opted for right hand. The main difference was my control method was snuffed out deliberately by the Japanese Video Game industry. I now see this as a "civil rights" issue within video games.
