Having trouble learning to play on an arcade stick? Here are a few things to consider that might be a bigger problem than your physical control of the controller. Understanding how your chosen game receives inputs is important when trying to learn technical inputs.

Anyone who needs help with execution on stick is to go into training mode and dash to one side of the screen then dash back. Do that A LOT. When you feel comfortable with that then pick a character with a standard fire ball and see if you can throw 25 fire balls without messing up in each direction. After you got that find a character that has a DP motion and do the DP move 25 times on each side without messing up. That’s a good place to start working on execution.

There are way too many people who give out the advice you give but oddly enough, your post spoke to me. I don't know if this sounds like gratitude to you but I have shizoaffective disorder and am unemployed, living with my family. Although I certainly am getting better, Tekken has been the thing that gave me hope in life. I couldn't play very well. After realizing how correct your advice was even after seeing the same advice, I just had reach out to you, as I believe everything has a reason to it. Thank you, you are definitely going to be blessed. :)

4:01-4:05 This. This by a wide margin. I always tell my friends that don't really play fighters to forget about the 20 hit combos you see me so. Just focus on a simple, easy to do combos. Being consistent is far more important than flashy, when you're first leaning especially.

The crazy thing about arcade machines is that they just showed up out of nowhere one day. The people who made them never released a "how to use a stick" guide. In a sense they are more designed with the concerns of people who own arcades or bars in mind than those of the player. All the same, some 50 years later many people think of them as the ideal controllers for fighting games.

They may not be ideal but if people get enjoyment from using them there's no harm in doing so. With enough practice anybody can reach hitbox level precision with pad or stick. Though I think many would use hitbox if it was what they used first.

omg... I feel like that was old videogames as a whole... "instructions? WHAT ARE THOOOSE. Here's our game, there's only like 6 buttons, just push them and see what happens LOL" ...so that wasn't ideal, but I kinda feel like modern games are overdoing the tutorials/button prompt instructions...

it's not much that it's the ideal way to play fighting games as much as that fighting games have been perfected to be played on arcades during their golden age and even when most were ported to console many vestigial mechanics stuck around because they were integral to the main appeal of the genre.

Be careful with stick. It requires alot more tendons to operate and can cause so much damage if you overdo things. I like using a lot of movement or feel like I need to be at the ready for a lot of things, so, while Virtua Fighter I played on stick(4 specifically since we had the Naomi, kinda had to since it has no macros for pad) 2D games require more action at a time. I learnt how to play stick there. Like I implied, pad definitely feels like there's an inherent advantage like blocking a xup since there's no wasted movement. Those tricks from devs definitely feel like things that were meant to manipulate stick more than pad. Reason why 360 motion easier on pad.

"Preference" is a word that's kind of thrown around incorrectly a lot. At least in my eyes, a preference is when you have options that are equal, or very close to each other in performance. A true choice between different ways to achieve the same result. "Preference" breaks down when a method is just objectively inferior. I don't think anybody would say that someone playing with their toes is a preference, in the same way that choosing a $100 reward or a $50 reward is not a preference. Pad, stick, hitbox, mixbox, keyboard, and fightpad are all preferences because they are all so incredibly close together that what it comes down to is personal comfort, because the ratio is like 95% comfort and 5% of the difference is the control scheme. Controller vs mouse is commonly regarded in the FPS community as not a preference. The mouse is better, period. The gain that you get for learning mouse far out weighs playing on controller by orders of incredible magnitude. There has never been a counter strike pro that hooks up his xbox controller and games it up. Aggressive aim assist in modern games unfortunately fuels the fire of people believing controller to be equal, but that's another discussion.

Huh? I strongly feel...that you should just not play the fighting games that have auto combos then. don't support them with your money if you feel that way.
