@@Diegesis So this scene with why powder did what she did with the bombs makes so much sense. Powder is 7 years old who lives in the undercity and is expected to jump off roof tops and stuff like that. In real life barley in kid could do this. She’s been pressured by Maylo and the gang to do better. Vi encourages her all the time. Vi is like her hero. And Vander was even stronger, like no one would mess with him. So when vi told them that a monster killed benzo and took vander, and powder saw how scared vi was, she thought this must’ve been a really scary monster. So she thought she needed to create a really big bomb to help them. And when vi ,her hero, said powder wasn’t ready, that just pushed powder more to live up to their standards. And the reason silco got to powder because, she was emotional, in pain, and she was 7 years old. She was angry at vi for leaving which in reality could happen with a 7 year old. Normally anger like that would past, but silco manipulated that emotion and made her focus on it more.

I have a buddy who absolutely loathes Powder, he does not like children at all generally, but especially doesn't like Powder and rants at length about how much she bothers him. Honestly it's made me slightly concerned for where his head's at.

Absolutely he was "Hey little girl... Where is your sister" just OOZES predator (The kind that hunt and kill just because) vibes. You can hear the very thinly veiled mockery in his voice. Its the eyes though. They animate facial expression in a way that seems far more human than humans do. You can tell his entire perspective changed before he said another word. And why not? Why can't an evil man empathize with someone else? Why can't an evil man show compassion to someone else?

I don’t think so. He obviously knew who Powder was; but he was looking for Vi. He had no idea what caused the massive explosion that just destroyed the Shimmer factory, burned away Sevika’s arm, and likely killed most of his people. He sees powder on the ground, next to Vander’s body, and is probably wondering, “is Vi alive or dead? What is her little sister doing here? Is this a trick?” Keep in mind that after the explosion, Deckard looks at Silco for orders, and Silco snarls “kill them.” Meaning his orders prior to this moment was specifically NOT to kill them. After Vander falls from the catwalk, Silco speaks to Deckard again, this time more calmly: “Find the girl.” Find. Not kill. Remember the look in Silco’s eyes as he watched Vi fighting? Remember how angry Vi was when she learned of Vander’s deal with Greyson? VI’s feelings about the topsiders are not that different from Silco’s. Vi was willing to fight for Zaun’s freedom, unlike Vander. I think Silco saw Vi as a future leader for the Lanes, one who wouldn’t make a separate peace as Vander had done. At the end of ep1, Vi says “one day this city’s gonna respect us.” When Vander asks Silco if he is doing all this for pride, what is Silco’s response? “For RESPECT.” Silco wanted Vi on his side.

They're not there yet in the narrative, but that's honestly what's so great about this show. Silco has emotions. Silco has feelings, and soft spots, and he genuinely cares about Jinx. Everyone in this show is a human being, in the main cast there are no shallow caricatures.

What I love about young Vi fighting is that she's putting her entire body into each punch. She's experienced, would be if Vander was your teacher, but she's still young and is fighting fully grown adults. Plus those gauntlets can't be light to get that much blood on them. She's lucky to have been fighting on a walkway that's too narrow for more than one person to attack her. If not then she would have lost easily. You can also see her getting tired and she puts everything into one last attack but loses.

Marcus took Vi away because, as he said, "He'll kill you if he hears you". She would have ran in to save Powder and gotten herself killed. He came to investigate the explosion and removed her from the field for her own safety. No malicious intent there.

He actively dislikes everyone in the undercity, yup. But, I do believe he didn't want Silco to kill a kid, and since that kid just so happened to ALSO be one of the prime suspects for the explosion, he saw an opportunity that was too good to pass up! @@TheMadirishgunner

@@TheMadirishgunnerexcept no, Marcus put Vi in Stillwater without anyone knowing, if he presented her to the council as the main culprit Silco would have just had someone kill her while she was serving her sentence, the end of episode 5 and the scene with Silco in Marcus’ house confirms he told Silco she was dead. Like it or not Marcus” legitimately saved Vi’s life

@@TheMadirishgunner It was probably guilt, he felt guilty about getting his partner killed and did the first good thing he could to try and clear his conscious and spite Silco, which explains why he just dumped her in prison after. He didn't actually care for her, it was self gratification. That's how I view it at least, it's a good deed done for selfish reasons fitting of a selfish character.

This was, genuinely, a game-changing episode. Like, the show is heading down one path leading up to it, and through most of it, and then... _boom_... This is honestly one of my favorite shows of all time because it just takes you through one of the most satisfying emotional roller-coasters of an experience possible. Don't worry, no spoilers. One thing I'll say is that this show hits on a very personal emotional level for me, with a lot of the things I've experienced in the last few years. An example from this episode where Vander is challenging Silco, and he asks, "For what? Pride?" When Silco snaps back, "For respect," it is easy to... see that as being a minor difference. However, speaking as someone who has been starved of respect within their own household, I can unequivocally say that being denied respect the way that Silco and The Undercity have been denied respect is very much something that can drive someone berserk. Something that can drive people to fight for that respect the same way that a drowning person will fight for air. Now, to be clear, as much as I understand where Silco's desperation for respect comes from, it doesn't forgive what he does. He lets himself go too far... to the point where he is willing to use fear and conflict as his weapons... where he no longer cares about what lives his cause costs on either side. That makes what he does unforgivable, in my book... even if I understand what brought him to that point.

Not saying you're wrong about anything character-wise, but Powder/Jinx is 11-12 years old here, not 7. They have a whole dialogue in episode 1 about Vi being "twice the person at half her age". There's no way Vi was 3 and doing anything besides learning to walk lol.

Episode 1 vi told powder was ready when she got nervous of jumping accross a rooftop because she’s never done it before, and maylo said every time she comes along something’s goes wrong. So they probably have gone on piltover before but episode 1 is probably the first time powder has jumped off roof tops. Making her 7 years old.

@@Ts-lz1gj I can't post the link, but look up Amanda Overton. She's a staff writer on Arcane. She tweeted that Powder is around 11-12 during the events of Act 1 in Arcane. If you look at her supposed birth date and compare it to Jayce's (with him being 24 in Act 1), then her being 11-12 tracks.

The whole show is about people having to make shitty choices, limited by huge problems going back generations. Vi pushes Powder because she'll need to be tough enough to survive the undercity (see the whole 'negotiation' in Vander's bar in ep1). But Powder isn't a fighter, so she compensates with her bombs. Which are too indiscriminate to use when you're fighting as a team, even if she had access to enough knowledge and materials to make them reliable. Everybody's trying to do sensible things, but it's still a mess overall.

I balled so hard watching this live... Vi and Powder being the first 2 champs I really played when I got into the game, and all of the lore build up over the years to FINALLY seeing this and not even expecting such a gut wrenching emotional punch of the part 1 finale just was too much for me

I would advise to approach the game with the idea that it has a lot of stuff to learn and that you might get a bit flamed by some players but you can play vs bots for a bit to get the hang of it if you do

you can feel powder's hurt and fear at being abandoned while she was crying. even after being struck by vi, only the pain of being left behind registers with her and powder only breaks down when vi walks away.

What I really want to see is a show about Vander and Silco's childhoods where they become brothers, leaders of a rebellion, and eventually turn into enemies that hate each other. Their story just seems so compelling.

The thing is... there are so many compelling stories among the existing characters in the league of legends lore. After they announced season 2 and how they likely will end Arcane there, and start a new show after focusing on other characters, and knowing the other characters they could focus on, it is really unlikely they'll ever delve into Silco/Vander background. Vi/Jinx, basically Piltover, is only a fraction of the landscape available, and far from the most compelling, and look at what they've created with them. I can only imagine the show they would create if they focused on the turmoil in Freljord, Demacia, Noxus, hell, even the Void.

Such a smart way to lay out a streaming release too. It's a great idea. Lets them release big batches that people can binge AND lets them drag the releases out to keep people watching and keep the hype up. Plus on a narrative level it synergizes like crazy because it's a trilogy of trilogies, it's a three-act structure made of three-act structures.

Powder's "I only wanted to help" x2 always gets me, she is unhealthily attached to Vi after their parents demise and always wanted to prover herself to them but to Vi most of all. In that one moment where Vi through all that grief and stress snaps at powder and needs a short time out to breath, they get seperated.

Congratulations. You now get why this show is so highly praised. This is the episode where I realized Arcane was on an entirely different level, where all the build up suddenly made so much sense. The tension is relentless. The voice acting from the girls, especially Powder, is just unreal. And the sound of the punch as Vi hits Powder makes me wince every time. I've seen this so many times and it's still difficult not to well up with tears. Just magnificent all around.

I never fail to tear up at the end of this episode. Powder just lost her entire family and got adopted by the worst person possible. Jayce and Viktor are starting a technology revolution and Vi is getting dragged off by a corrupt cop. The next chapter is going to be wild.

The ending of this episode seriously fucks me up, both for what Powder is obviously feeling but also for Vi. Powder’s entire world crumbles in such a few moments. From elation from what she saw as a victory, finally being “useful” to her family and friends, to complete depression as she realizes she destroyed everything. Also, I can only imagine the pain and regret Vi has for hitting Powder, her beloved 7 year old little sister. The end of this episode is just fucking rough.

This episode was really an emotional roller coaster. I truly was not expecting such a catastrophic but brilliant subversion of expectations. You could truly feel Vi’s disappointment and rage, and you couldn’t help but sympathize with powder’s desire to help and be useful only to have it truly and quite literally, blow up in her face. And the voice acting is truly out of this world. Kudos to the young actress that played young powder. She nailed it.

It is always fascinating to me with reactions to Arcane that almost everyone views Jayce as pure and Victor as shady even though they really say similar things. Only difference seems to be that Jayce is handsome while Victor isn't.

The thing you are trying to remember that the spinning gem stone reminds you of is Atlantis, Disney's animated film from the early 2000's. Arcane's art style reminds me of Atlantis and Treasure Planet, which were both done by the same team at Disney.

And sometimes you come to realize that there are things worse than death, and worse yet is watching someone you love find that out because of you.

Yup, Ep3 is probably the best example of setting up a timeskip I've seen in a show (it's like a 6/7 year jump), and they smartly don't even bother explaining what happened during that interval, since that info is ultimately unimportant to the rest of the story, and they included enough context clues to allow the audience to figure it out themselves.

Hydrophobia actually is a symptom of rabies. But if you've seen clips of it, it's like, complete repulsion, they start thrashing around to avoid being given water, it's not just "not liking water." "I hope something goes right for her." But she was wrong. Really wrong 🤣 The hex crystal exploded just one time, but we have a perspective of the explosion from the point of view of many characters. Many people think that Silco wanted to take advantage of Powder's vulnerability and recruit for his cause, but he really feel connected with her. Vander was his brother, and "left" him (betrayed him), so he sees himself in Powder. What a great episode. It totally broke my heart and I love it. Powder's voice actress performance was incredible

A lot of people immediately clock Viktor as a bad guy, and all the dude has is a limp, a vaguely eastern-european accent and looks kinda sickly, which are so often used to code for billains that eben while he has done nothing suspicious and actively tells you he wants to make the world a better place, people still don't believe him. Especially when Jayce is the exact opposite when it comes to his character design and is sharing a scene with him.

I always found that sorta understandable but also odd. When I 1st watched I thought Mel was sus asf right up until we got her backstory but I pretty much took Viktor at face value. The artists made the characters astoundingly expressive plus the VAs are brilliant, and Viktor struck me as purely genuine in both words and expressions from the get-go. I thought his 'science buds' relationship with Jayce was endearing and his disability was sad bc it'd clearly taken a toll on his health. It surprised me when I found out other people were wary of him in the 1st act

"Powder dead" "I think she's gonna be turned into a bad guy" you're both right. SIlco had no reason to try and manipulate a 10 year old. He was absolutely planning to murder her after getting her sister's whereabouts out of her. He only changed his mind when he saw the connection between him and Vander and Powder and Vi. And it's not just because of a similar situation, it's also because there was so much of Vander in Vi. "Please I hope something goes right for her" (SPOILER FOR THE WHOLE SEASON) - - - - - - - Way to Jinx it xD Nothing will ever go right for her.

Don’t fall into the trap so many reactors have fallen into that see Silco as just a manipulator. He sees genuine kinship in Powder. He becomes everything to her that he wishes he had growing up. He’s not rubbing his hands together in evil excitement at the idea of someone he can twist and warp. He sees someone he can support and empower. He sees someone he can lift up and help reach their full potential, the best he can. He sees a daughter. Sure, as a third party observer we can tell that he’s definitely not the hero here, but in his mind he is doing what’s necessary to lift up his people, and sees himself as the only one willing to get the job done, by any means. And he sees in Powder someone who needs his guidance. Not in a manipulative way, but a fatherly one.
