Archer: Sweden's self-loading, rapid-fire artillery system explained

The Archer Artillery System is in a class of its own with its ability to move and fire before an enemy can react.
Designed by BAE Systems, the Archer's simplicity and impressive rate of fire makes it a formidable opponent in battle.
Armed with an automatic loading 155mm howitzer, the system - currently being used by the Swedish army - can be deployed, fire and move off at speed, making it difficult for enemy forces to detect its location after it fires.

The most impressive thing is that all the rounds hit ground at the same time (if you want) the computer calculate the round so even if they not shoot's away from the vehicle the same time, they will land at the enemy all at once. Meanwhile the vehicle already on it's way to new position.

Time on target was started in WW2, according to Ian V. Hogg. Modern self propelled artillery systems reduce the setup time and allow one gun to do a time on target shoot. The practice is at least 80 years old BUT the modern application via SP guns with automatic loading systems is a significant improvement.

The ability to put multiple rounds downrange in a hurry with a single weapon versus an entire battery or larger rounds cannot be overstated. A single artillery vehicle is easier to hide than an entire battery, too. For small countries facing a much larger enemy, the Archer is an equalizer.

Which is much better, than the British Army non-working Ajax Armoured Vehicle Family. Instead of the Sweden just donating 50 CV-90 IFV's along with maybe upto 12 Archer SPH to Ukraine 🇺🇦! Maybe the Swedish Government could think about, donating 100 CV-90 IFV's and 24 Archer SPH's too. The question remains - Will the Ukrainian crew and soldiers, for the Archers and CV90s, get the training and built-up experience they need to be able to use these systems to their fullest extent. The war in Ukraine, where both sides use more or less the same systems at the start, has shown in painful clarity how important training, experience, and morale are. I hope the trainers take the time and make a herculean effort to prepare the Ukrainian users for these systems. Without that, we can send them toys or the best war machines giving the same impact - non.

I guess it's also up the Ukrainians how much training they want. What training they need and want. But of course the more training they got the better it is. And then there's also the crew maintaining and reparing these things that will be Ukrainians. So lots of moving parts and people.

From what I have seen of the Ukrainians, they will use these systems better and more effectively than what we thought was possible in the first place.

From what I've read about the joint troop training efforts, even the mobilized Ukranians are super engaged in the training and it's been quite an eye opener for those delivering it. I can only imagine how motivated the artillery troops would be getting their hands on this. Like kids in a candy store! And I'm 100% sure the Swedes would be delighted to assist.👍

It is all kept pretty hush-hush but as I understand, Ukrainian crews are undergoing a two- month training session on this system as we speak. My guess is that this was all planned out and set into action before the deal was even publicly announced. Anything else would be criminally stupid. Chanses are we won't hear anything else of this before the archers show up on the battlefield. A weapons system like this is vurnerable to sabotage and I don't doubt for a second that Russian agents are operating inside Europe an Ukraine.

The Archer Artillerisystem 08 is not the same as the Archer system, as the Arts08 is a Sweden(Norway) only system, with the dumper carrier. You can put an Archer unit on anything you want, albeit an HMX, a boat or your grandma's carrage. That system is alive and well, and what BAE is selling today

What the Archer can also do is fire 5 rounds and make them hit at the same time with millimeter precision, it does this by firing the first round with the highest angle then lower the cannon couple of degrees, the targeting computer calculate everything with distance and wind direction etc.

The ARCHER System is a very good one and with the german System Rheinmetal HX3 155mm nearly on same level. But I prefer the latest and better protected version of the BOXER Artillery-System (called RCH155). This is superior at the moment with some advantage. The RCH155 can fire during driving and this is outstanding. The protection is much better than the truck based Systems. But overall.... the truck based systems much cheaper and ARCHER is really high class. Much better than CAESAR
