There's nothing wrong with getting a cheap rest. But, what's the difference between the cheapest rests?

Hoyt super rest has worked for me this past 2 months..Up to 35-36lbs now...with no plunger either...Not a problem with it..Keeps the arrows on the rest in windy conditions too!..Thanks for a good review Nu..

I have never seen a compelling reason to use anything other than the low-end plastic rests like the Hoyt SRs, and even a lot of the very skilled archers at my club seem to agree. It just works for me. I have used both basic types covered in the video here and I do find that it's been necessary for me to trim down the arm when using the hunter style rests to get my X7's sitting correctly on the pressure button

Thanks for the video, NUSensei. I don't know if you saw a recent comment I made. It was regarding you using a plastic rest rather than a magnetic rest when you already have a clicker. The guys at Lancaster Archery told me that people tend to use clickers with rests like the Shibuya Ultima cause it keeps the arrows from sliding off the rest's arm on the draw.

Hoyt Hunter rest user here. I tapered the rounded arm and feel so good with it. However, the "plunger like" part (i dont know the name) wear out quite fast than the Super rest

The Hoyt hunter rest was always my favorite on a hunting recurve (or even the old round wheel compounds). I tended to move around the woods with my index finger over the arrow to keep it in place which puts a lot of pressure on the rest arm. They would wear if I was shooting cedar arrows a lot. But, I agree the Hoyt super rest is great for recreational or target shooting.

My bow has that exact hunter rest on it and I've found that if something in my form isn't quite perfect that the rest will magnify the issue and send my arrow porpoising and hit the target much higher. When it does this you can see on the rest itself the interference with the arrow as the plastic is damaged. I have a couple hoyt super rests and a shibuya dx plunger on order. We will see if those clean things up a bit.

I've been using Hunter rests forever. Have only broken a few of these over the last 30 years. Have a couple spring rests and Whiskers on compound bows. Still have several shelf leather and fur on rests.

Nice video. I use a hunter rest on one of my bows but I peared it down a bit with an x-acto knife to give it a bit softer flexibility.

I've used both Hoyt types shooting barebow and wooden arrows. The hunter type only lasted about 6 months before it wore down, the super rests last more than a year or even 2. (I don't get to shoot much, only one club session a week at this time.)

I noticed that out of the 2 parallel 'holes' for plunger, you've aligned the rest to the one nearer. Why not the one further? Any reason or just personal preference? I remember for sight, you said it is usually as far out as possible. Thanks in advance!

Great video, thanks for sharing this information, I have recently bought a Mandarin duck, phantom, and i ordered a Cartel flipper rest for it, but the rest seems to sit too far into the cutaway hole in the riser, i can place the rest right down on the shelf, touching the shelf, but would this have a bad affect? As i think the arrow will catch the shelf because there is little clearance between the rest and the shelf, Do you have any recommendations on a good rest for the phantom recurve? Thanks

I've actually found those Hoyt Hunter rests will wear relatively quickly in regards to rental bows using aluminum arrows with low profile vanes.

I think the Bear weatherrest is about as good as can be if shooting barebow. It cost a few bucks more, but its worth it.

I gotta tell ya - my husband is REALLY enjoying your posts on here. He has learned some things and then he's reconfirmed other things. He's an archery for the local Renaissance group, so competitive archery is not really what they do. But he sees a LOT of similarities in what you show and talk about to what he has been taught. Do you think you'll venture into the medieval style of archery at some point and post it?

I used to like them,... quick and easy. My favorite easy tune rest is the one that came with my Martin Jaguar recurve bow,... it screwed in it was both left and right handed it had 2 arrow rest arms one below and one above that prevented the arrow from falling off. The problem is I can't find them any where. I have both stick on and screw in rests,.....but the martin rest would be prefered it prevents the arrow from falling when drawing,...when your getting tired.

So with a super rest, unlike a Spigarelli ZT, there is no way to adjust it’s height to get the plunger to make contact with the center of the arrow. Depending on the arrow the plunger may sit low or high. How do you overcome this, or do you just not worry about it?

I have a hunter rest and after two weeks of shooting (1k arrows?) the friction of the arrows basically cut off the vertial ''holder'' nearest to the bow. What am I doing wrong? The arm that the arrow rests on is still fine, so the arrow rest is still functional but I don't think this is supposed to happen?

both the hunter rest and super rest will wear and develop a groove from the constant rubbing of the arrow shaft rubbing, ~1000 arrows or so. the hunter rest, being thicker, seems to groove faster and deeper. the super rest can be finicky and unforgiving if you have any extra motion in your draw; easy to doink the arrow off the rest. on the other hand, it is a good training tool to perfect your draw.

What about the metal rest? The one that is on the top (with the green background). Those dont look like they can wear out. Are there any downsides to using that?

I have a regular adhesive rest with plastic plate and a metal pin, but I live in the Caribbean and the heat sort of softens the adhesive pad and the entire rest just slides down and obviously messes up my aim. what can I do?

I've used the Hoyt Super Rest since it came out, and used the original one prior to that in the 60's. Never had one single issue with them, and nothing but perfect flight. You can use any rest, or no rest if that's what makes you happy. To me, I want simple and effective just like I started in 1967 with the original Hoyt stick on rest. Choices, that's all. By the way, the Hoyt Super Rest is still used on some bows in the Olympics. Most of the folks I hunted with in the 1960's were all using stick-on rests as well. Isn't that remarkable.

One thing that bothers me with newer (and often younger) shooters is that they think money reflects quality. Which it often does with archery equipment, but arrow rests are exceptional. One of our new guys had trouble with his Shibuya rest, and got himself an AAE rest. As a coach, I shook my head. He didn't know how to adjust it and it was causing him frustration because his dad wanted him to get the best $60 rest. I would've just tossed a plastic rest on.

what happened to those rubber\foam looking stick on ones that stick in the crook of the riser est area.ive seen them put on in a bunch of videos but no one says a brand or where to get them.i.e.im going to get a "Bear Weather" arrow rest,its kinda like the hunter rest but it doesnt have that uphook so it wont tear up the fletching as much hopefully,its also VERY rounded.i was using the pointed squared off one that came with the mandarin duck phantom and it shoots great but tears up softer plastic fletching.i also tried shooting off the rest with just the "hair pad" and its kinda loud,maybe I just gotta shoot it a few more times..?if anyone has the Bear Weather hit me up!thnx

I have an issue that might be related to the rest. I have been shooting a light youth bow equipped with a hunter rest. The arrow seems to topple vertically when it leaves the bow, in every shot. Is it possible that the rest is hitting the fletching so hard that it prevents the arrow from flying straight?

I will say that after several years of shooting off the same Hunter rest it eventually wore down to a paper thin piece of floppy rubber that no longer held the arrow. However, $2.50 for several years without replacement is very good.

I have bought a black sheep apollo 32 pound bow kit with the super rest. The super rest arm broke of the plate on my third or fourth shot. I made sure to shot the arrow with the vanes the right way. But now im shooting vanes of the shelf and debating if i want fletched arrows or a better arrow rest. So to whoever reads this feel free to come with some recomendations to a fellow bow noob.

I have the Hunter rest on my bow and figured the super rest would probably be less intrusive on the shot, but it's my first bow and was my first time shooting recurve having learned on a bare compound, so I went with durability. Question, however. When I went to a store to get arrows, the clerk said I could only shoot feather arrows with it or at least they would be best on the hard plastic rest, so does feathers change how the two rests perform?

Feathers can be shot off rests or the shelf, since the feathers will flow with the shot and not be deflected on contact. Since the hard Hunter rests don't flex much, they're almost like shooting off the shelf, so that would have been conservative advice.

I have broken a hunter rest within the first 150 shots, that being said, it's an old one on my dad's old bow. That being said, I am just gonna get a screw in magnetic rest, just because I feel more confident with that.

Isn't the profile on a bow automatically a rest? My SAS recurve came with a felt pad (no instructions so not a clue what it was meant for). This is my very first bow and I've been watching a lot of videos... Saw where others put the pad and copied that...

Based on the comment below, Im assuming the flat platform just beneath the Rest is called the Shelf. Why isnt the "arm" and angle of the Rest flipped "Trapping" the arrow between the Rest and Shelf. Im new to Arrow Flinging but that makes more sense to me.

You don't want to trap the arrow. You want to have the least amount of contact possible.

@@NUSensei Sorry I use the word trap loosely. But wouldnt flipping the rest be no different from say a whisker biscuit. Again Im new to this stuff so I have less than 5% experience and knowledge as you/instructor. You could literally invent information and Id take your word for it... until one day when Im like, "...wait a second!"

@@NUSensei ...I just thought about the Feathers or Fetching, I believe its called, and the effect the shelf would have on the trajectory of the arrow. But that also seems unavoidabe. Its almost guaranteed to some degree of fletching contact.

@@lgg2304 Again, you don't want to contain the arrow. Containment rests (i.e. whisker biscuits) are a necessity to keep the arrow nocked and on the bow for hunting situations where you need to move with bow and arrow loaded, and even then it's more common on compound. The whiskers are soft, allowing the arrow to pass through with less resistance, though it is nowhere near the freedom of having a regular rest.There's no advantage to turning a rest upside down to contain the arrow. It prevents the arrow from flexing and causes clearance issues with the fletchings. You may as well just shoot off the shelf.

Anywhere works. The rest is the single point where the arrow touches until it’s launched. But I just prefer shooting off the shelf. Add felt or Velcro and you’re good.

I know you kind of explained this at around the 5 minute mark but... how exactly does a rest allow vanes to fly off? Isn't it just a shelf, but higher on the riser? I just can't seem to wrap my head around how vanes don't get damaged shooting off rests like they do shelves. For the rest to bend and provide clearance, wouldn't something need to press against it for it to fold (the only thing on the arrow I can imagine pushing the rest down is the vane)

Archer's paradox. The arrow actually flexes as soon as it leaves the string, and the oscillation should occur at a point where the back of the arrow actually clears the rest, so there should not be contact. This will be the case if the bow is properly tuned (i.e. the arrows are the correct spine). If not, there will be clearance issues with the arrow making excessive contact with the bow. One of the benefits of a light flipper-style rest is that it is more forgiving for arrow/vane contact (which might be due to a slightly inaccurate tune, or a poor release), hence the magnetic rests provide less resistance to the arrow - and therefore won't knock the arrow off its course as much. The heavier rests, such as the Hunters, won't provide as much leeway. This is also a big reason why you can't shoot plastic vanes off the shelf: there is *no* give in the shelf, and the vanes will be deflected off the shelf. Feathers are not rigid and will glide over the shelf on contact.

Hello, quick question. I have a recurve bow and will be adding a rest to it. When shooting from the shelf you go up on the nock string 3/8-5/8 of an inch from the shelf horizon. With the rest, do you go up again 3/8‐5/8 of an inch from the rest horizon or do you keep it where its at?

@@r1sabotage yes you raise your nock point. For small movements, a one to one should be fine...or if your nock point is straight back...which for your setup does not seem to be the case.
