Archival Method to Conserve Comic Book STAPLES!

Avengers #1 Ep. 7.
In this video I continue the conservation of this Avengers #1 comic book, the first appearance of the Avengers from the Silver Age, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
I've completed the initial dry clean, disassembly, photobleached with deacidification, and sealed the tears using Japanese Tengujo paper and wheat paste. In this Episode i review the chemistry and the scientific literature for iron conservation, and demonstrate an archival method to treat rusty comic book staples to preserve the staple and surrounding paper!
These techniques should result in a CGC Conserved label and in my experience when executed properly do not trigger purple or restored label from CGC.

Such a delicate process. What an amazing job you have done! The bending of the staples at the end is a stressful moment as I know that it can be difficult to get get it bent down exactly as it was originally. One time I lifted a staple to see if I could reattach a detached centerfold. Well the staple hole already had a tear so reattaching did not work, AND I just couldn’t get the staple to fold back down in the exact same way. It was a humbling experience.

Looks great Paul, it amazes me. To see how staples and old toys, plastic and metal. Can be saved by being restored. Especially paper repairs too. Same with these sunk ship treasures, like old money, watches, etc. Using anti-rust cleaners and using electros in cleaner to break free the rust.

Very nicely done Dr. Paul! That book has come along way and looks like the end is near. If I've learned anything at all from your videos, it's that patience has to be quite high up on the list - if not number one on it.

Great video Dr Paul, thanks for sharing your secret solution! I use evapo-rust, which has worked for cleaning the staples and then I follow with water rinse and thorough drying. I should give your solution a try, because I usually leave mine in evapo-rust for longer periods (usually depends on the extent of the rust). I have also used the 3M scuff pads to various degrees of satisfaction. I use sometimes a combination of pads and chemical treatment. But lately just the latter works fine. The book looks great btw and this is before the press! So I can imagine it looking even nicer at the end. Thanks again and have a nice day!
