Continuing my clean and press series featuring this Bronze Age Key Comic Marvel Premiere No. 28, the 1st appearance of the Legion of Monsters, for the winner of our 100 subscriber giveaway TJ! This episode I continue the clean and press process. I review the photobleaching results and discuss techniques for dealing with rusty staples. These techniques apply equally well whether you are a fan of Marvel or DC comics, whether you like to collect or invest, whether you prefer Golden Age or Modern Books, whether you like to keep you books raw or prefer to send them off for grading at CGC. I'm new to all this, but I've seen where people have just used good staples from other books. As a newbie, is there a reason you're doing it this way? Thanks.

You can do that for sure. 👍🏽 This is the people that have a need to know the details and that like to do things themselves, or for someone who doesn't have a good donor book on hand for a period-correct staple. After all, it's not like golden age comic books are just laying around in abundance.

I have some books from the 60s that the interior pages have worn away from the staple so they are now loose. Taking the staple out and putting it back in won’t fix this as the hole in the paper is now bigger than the staple is. How would you repair the paper around the staple so the staple actually holds the paper. Tengujo paper?

Danny, yes, the traditional fix recognized by CGC as conservation rather than restoration is Japanese paper and wheat paste. These days most use Tengujo and methyl cellulose adhesive. I have many tutorials on the process here on the channel. 👍🏽

I'm new to the channel and I'm very interested in staple removal. I have what I believe could be a high grade Lois Lane 70 but it has 2 rusty staples. Do you offer any services?

Bad Boy, not generally. Suggest you seek out someone from one of the FB groups for comic book cleaning and pressing. Lots of super-talented folks there. Good luck with the Lois Lane 70, what a fun book!
