My dad and I got into detecting about 15 years ago and we started off with analog detectors all tesoros for years. Then went whites , fisher, etc. Im glad we went analog because it was all about the listening to tones and no visual id. I laugh when i watch videos of guys passing up targets because of ID numbers. Great video!!!

Honestly the secret to success in metal detecting is to avoid trying to find ways to dig less. I get it when you're in a new spot or have limited time you want to cherry pick and if you're looking for coins or high conductors only that will work. If you want relics and gold...........you need to dig more.

My house, and others around me were built in the late 40's. I hunted my and my neighbors yards several times. My old Garrett Freedom II found a couple newer pennies and a couple clad dimes. I then bought an ATpro and found a few more coins, but nothing to brag about. My Nokta kruzer found a few more including a war nickel. Then I got my Legend and found five wheaties, a very old pocket knife, a couple more nickels and a merc dime in my yard. My neighbor's place: a pile of pennies with 7wheats, 3more nickels and two silver dimes. All of this among a lot of nails. I even dug a little brass 6-32 nut at nine inches. I'm sold on the newer technology, including multi frequency.

I agree with you, but it’s always nice to have more tools in the chest so to speak. I was using an old bounty hunter tracker before I bought my Legend. Found plenty with the tracker but having those options on the legend is nice to have to optimize the chances as conditions change.

I started out with a cheap Whites 4DB in 1979 at 16 years old. My father and I crushed silver coins daily. Granted less people hunted so sites were virgin and many of today's trash wasn't thrown over yards yet and it's almost 50 years less that they had to get as deep at today so it was easy like shooting ducks in your pool. Large coppers, halves and quarters were well within reach of those inexpensive machines that either beeped or it didn't. One thing I will say is we didn't hit as many nickels to disc out most garbage but it was no big deal. I think that's why today you can dig a buffalo but no quarters or halves because in the 70's to mid 80's Whites coin master detectors were slaughtering them all lol. Then my dad gets a Tesoro with that higher frequency and he started working on the nickel population lol. By then the XLT came out and hit everything leading to the DFX dual frequency in the late '90's with Minelabs CTX and other multi frequencies and the detecting world took on a new breed. My early DFX dual frequency has every adjustable feature available to set which will compete against today's high tech if you know how to use those settings. 20 plus years later I still have the DFX as a back up in case my knew machines stumble too much with the ID's the DFX was 85% dead on in that department as it had 4 points of ID the audio tone, a digital ID, the signagraph bar which like today's Legend's Ferro check but it's best feature IMO was the DC Phase shift reading which distinguished a nickel from aluminum with an identical ID number being it read using a higher frequency then what the ID system operates at so it separated the high/low conductivity and allowed for easy cross reference which is so damn accurate. I don't know why these modern detector companies don't use this DC Phase feature. I think if people saw it in action how well it works people would request it incorporated in the detector. It's activated in the pinpoint mode. Modern tech tries to avoid the need for these extra features but so far I haven't seen a detector that's been able to accurately ID a target with a nail next to it like the DC Phase pinpointing can. It can tell you there's a nail to the left and a penny signal on the right regardless to the smeared audio signal. We might see a hybrid in the future with the speed of calculations of the high tech in iron and ground filters with the reliability of the analog nailing the targets. Come to think of it I don't ever remember hearing EMI in those older machines like we hear in these detectors of today
@PaystreakSuperfreak
@PaystreakSuperfreak Жыл бұрын
The reason why we never heard much EMI back then because there were no cell phones(maybe pagers), no modems, no routers and there was no cell towers. I used the DFX and the DC phase shift was awesome for checking targets. The trigger was awesome.

I had the Whites detector around the same time in 78/79 at age 13/14. I found 1.75 in old silver coins and a large 18k England Air Force Base ring the first time I used it in my grandfather`s old yard. Had no idea how to run it. It was used but still cost hundreds.

@jeanponce2017
@jeanponce2017 6 ай бұрын
@@PaystreakSuperfreak I know this is old I missed the comments somehow but I think you nailed it there's so much radio waves floating around between our phones, cars with blue tooth and those cell tower are definitely filling the air waves with high frequency signals. I'm sure detector companies could eliminate it but they don't have permission from the FCC to operate anything using certain frequency bands. Like channels on the old CB scanners the police are assigned a certain set of frequencies, TV and radios use another range of frequencies and the military operates within their own range. If detector companies were using those band widths it might be possible to cause interference although how far away could it really effect anything. But the reason nobody can use certain frequencies are because somebody could build a device and purposely hide it close to jam, interfere or possibly intercept radio transmissions. This are those things nobody ever really thinks about. Who knows maybe better machines could be made but using certain frequencies might not be legal to use in recreational "toys" without a special licence. If it gets even close to what the military uses the special licence would be put of the question.

Wonderful explanation. I have many "fancy" detectors but I live my tesoros Also simple to work on. Solid state machines like tesoro are easy to fix with mild soldering skills. And they're so fun. And the disc circuit is so easy.

My best gold day ever was with a Bounty Hunter in 1996. Three very heavy 14k rings, 14k earring, and 18k gold rim glasses. All in under an hour. I found a lot with that old detector. Wore it out. Came from Radio Shack for 250 bucks. Target ID was like a miracle then and it had it. Mopped up coins in new areas.

I have an old Fishers CZ6a and its fun to get out with but it hits hard on deep iron. The Tesoro's were great as well but also like deep iron. To me that's a big advantage to the Multi is the stable VDI and what you don't have to dig. The Compadre in a Tot-lot is a beast! I've also had some success with Deeptech as an alternative to Tesoro. Just started my journey with the Legend and I'm not sure I could go back to the old machines.

If you can see it in your head and have all the feelings of a little kid that dreams of finding a treasure chest. Dig everthing. Otherwise you will never know and later on it will eat at you. Nice topic! Thanks. That inspires me to buy a fisher 6a pro again. It's an analog pulse induction. I had one on a replacement loan wile my fisher7a pro was in for repair from Paul's detectors in Mundelein Illinios. His 6a was hot rodded by a fisher technician. I frigging killed it with the 6a pro. I had to give it back when my 7a came back. You are a great teacher.

This has been my question to several people on youtube with no answers. If as I have heard we have to dig all targets to find the good stuff, then my question is why should anyone spend big money on a fancy detector that tells me to skip a target that I have to dig anyway ? It seems a simple buzz box that has depth and sensitivity should be all we need.

Nice subject to discuss, Paystreak. The Simplex stands out among the newer single frequency detectors, don't you think? I will say that a lot of the older detectors are still fun to use and will give up good finds, though target separation can suffer. Not to mention relearning how to hunt with concentric coils. I do hope you bring out one of your Tesoros. It would be fun to see you run one. Bill

My Compass Challenger X100 with the 12' search head in the all metal mode goes as deep as my Nokta Legend with the LG28. But in the discriminate mode (F) the Legend is deeper.In iron infested sites,the Legend is better too, because it works with 10 level of reactivity.But I love my old X100, you can detect slowly with it, hearing for deep signals...Thank you for your video and best regards from France.

I wish that the Manticore had a single frequency 2D Target Trace. Why only the multi frequency has it, baffles me. Single frequency 2D Target Trace is at the top of my wish list of changes to the Manticore. Yes I have a lengthy Manticore wish list of changes that I would like to see implemented. I hope the rumored Minelab "THE ULTIMATE" has a single frequency 2D Target Trace. If "THE ULTIMATE" has single frequency 2D Target Trace, take my money! The Manticore is not for your style of detecting PSSF. The balance awful and it's too heavy. I'm going to add an extension and use batteries as a counter weight to fix what shouldn't needed fixing. I also explored flipping and rotating the handle below the shaft, a much improved balance was achieved! But the coil cable hits my wrist and the display is facing away from me. Last night I was wondering if I could cut the handle in half and separate the battery from the display and relocate the components. There goes the warranty and resale value :) Most poor designs occur because the product design was outsourced to a contemporary stylist/design company, dictated by either the marketing and/or sales department or the worse of them all by a MBA. Tks & HH 👨‍🦯

PBR, sorry to hear you’re not completely satisfied with your new machine….I think I also made wishlists for every machine I ever owned….about the linear only ID mapping for single freq. operation on the Manticore….this may be an inherent limitation of single freq…the manual states that when operating in single freq, the detector cannot gather enough info to plot both conductive and ferrous properties for each target (thus ferrous limits aka iron bias is disabled in single freq mode). Iron bias is also disabled on all the Equinox machines when operating in single freq, It does look like the manticore limits iron identification to the lower left of the display with ID’s 1-19, underlined in red when in single freq. Also sorry to hear the balance is “off” on the machine….This doesn’t seem to be a common complaint from manticore owners (at least I haven’t heard of any) 🤔
