I've had an ML3 pro modern since it launched in 2017 (serial number 8!) And it's absolutely killer. It had chapman branded pickups to start, and has had SD invaders, with an EMG 81/89 set in at the moment. It's a superb guitar with an amazing neck (the real selling point in my opinion). Going to be getting a set of BKP Aftermaths for it soon to truly make it my perfect axe.

Got me a made in Korea Cap-10 from 2016. Love that guitar. Came with JB in the bridge an ss1 in middle and Jazz in the neck. Other than the volume pot needing replaced soon, no complaints. You can go from shred to Texas blues to metal. Great guitar.

I pondered over Chapman for a long time and love the looks. So finally grabbed an ML3 in the Andersons sale. It’s not my number 1 BUT it’s the guitar I keep picking up. I’m stuck between loving it and - really loving it. The high fret height takes a bit of getting used to but the neck, body, quality, sound & feel is up there with the best. Premium brands should be aware. Get one - I’m definitely getting another

In March, during a vacation to the UK, I visited Anderton’s on Day #1. One of my bandmates asked me to check out the Chapman ML3 Thinline Pro and give him my opinion. I really liked the construction, the sounds of the Seymour Duncan Quarter pound and P90 pickups, and the overall playability of the guitar. I liked it so much that I ordered the guitar to be sent to my home in the US. After ~6 weeks of playing, I am extremely happy with this guitar. PS, my bandmate also ordered it and is very happy with this guitar. Great job Chapman Guitars.

As a Bassist, I feel like I’ve always been left to the wayside by companies like this. Especially Chapman being a fan of Bea and Dave. With them FINALLY releasing a bass (the MLB-1) to them redesigning it (with a higher price, but worth it) and then just shit canning it all together. I thought Chapman would be a smaller brand I could really latch onto. Guess I’ll have to keep looking.

Just because Rob is a personality people think they know, has nothing to do with the quality of the products. Do people know the CEO of Gibson, Fender, Ibanez? Do people know if they’re good people or a-holes??? No. They still buy their products though. If Rob was a private man you’d just see his products and buy them because I’d you like them, just like anything you buy. Besides, what so people think of Lee Anderton who owns half of the company? He am a-hole too??

The Chapman is every bit as good as any of the other ones and is easily in my top 5 favorite guitars I have ever played. IMO it is worth every penny and I would 100% buy it again without even sitting down to play it. I am that confident in the brand.

Thanks for checking out the video dude, I appreciate it! It truly is a great guitar, one of my favourites. The historic drama with Chapman isn't so much the brand itself, it's related to Rob Chapman who created these guitars. Chapman kind of a double edged sword... i got my first about 6 years ago and it was from the ml3 standard line, and it's dead on. a great guitar. in 2023 I wanted to get a new one that was as close to exactly like the one I already had, for personal reasons, and it was "worse" than the one from 2017 in every way. It wasn't anything close to "bad", but the frets weren't filed off cleanly, the tone knob easily goes flying if you pull it a little too hard on stage for the push/pull, the tuning stability isn't as good and overall it doesn't feel toe to toe with what chapman has done years back, even though it cost quite a bit more. Don't get me wrong, it is still a good guitar, it just isn't great
@JackTaylorGuitars
@JackTaylorGuitars Жыл бұрын
Totally man, they're fair criticisms considering your experiences have been a straight 50/50 split quality wise! I guess it happens sometimes but it always sucks when a guitar you were expecting to be good has it's problems. Appreciate you checking out the video mate 🤘

My main guitar since 2015 has been a ML3 Traditional. I love the guitar immensely, it plays superbly and sound killer. Recently I was drawn to Evertune fitted guitars (Jericho and Solar brands) and had one fitted to the ML3 to bring it to spec of my newer instruments and it’s made a great guitar even better in my opinion. Chapman do made great guitars, however I think they’re chasing a player that I’m not. The hipster, coffee snobs of guitarists.. the P90s semi hollow stuff do nothing for me and that seems to be their big push lately. Also their instruments are no where near as affordable as they were. The ML3 cost me £400 in early 2015 but they’re not about double that for the Traditional ML3 models and they don’t seem to have changed the spec much. I don’t think Chapman are irrelevant.. I just think they’ve moved very far away from what they set out to be originally and their target audience is no longer the every man sort of player. Doesn’t help that Rob himself also comes across as an absolute bellend these days.

Thanks for checking out the video mate, I hope you had a great Christmas! The evertune ML3 of yours sounds absolutely awesome man, I'm glad you love it. I think ultimately, as long as the guitar is great and it's something you're happy to play then whatever player Chapman are after doesn't matter too much. To me, I've always felt like they were a guitar for everyone or at least had something to suit the majority of players. I'm not a big fan of the hollowbody stuff either though, it's the modern line that I really like though I'd love to try out the ML3 pro traditional. Price wise, I'm still shocked by how much the whole industry has risen but I guess it's just a sign of the times. In terms of Chappers, I know he's an acquired taste to some and I've never had a conversation with him, but he did message me to thank me for my recent video and he always replies to his comments so he seems like a good guy to me. That's all just my take though mate, thank you for sharing yours! 🤘

You've got my sub dude, watched a few of your videos and you've always responded to my comments (top bloody dude) my issue with Chapman is the same issue I have with modern Harley benton. Inconsistency. I think both brands (pre covid) battered out decent instruments, HB has cost effectiveness on their side, 1 grand for a Chapman with major flaws nukes the brand. Yeah man, I'm surprised too actually but you're right. If it's good, it's good and that's it. I think there's room in the market for both of them. Ola covering the metal end of the market and Chapman covering the slightly less heavy segment. Seating position man, sitting classically has been great for my back and arms. I never checked them out, because no one seemed to have one on the shelf when I was shopping. Guitar Center had a few, but they were way up in the nosebleeds, and I was told by the floor manager that the "guy who works the ladder" didn't come to work that day. I think there's too much competition in that price range right now for them to have a voice. $1000 buys a great axe from a hundred manufacturers right now- why go with one you've never heard of, or seen anyone play; and can't find on the shelf?
@JackTaylorGuitars

I totally get what you're saying and it's such a shame when the guitars are so good. It might take some work but I think for them to have a legitimate voice more people need to start giving them a chance. In the same breath, they need to work for that too. I guess it's give and take. The only thing I can say is that, for the money, I haven't played much that feels this good. Appreciate your thoughts on the matter mate, thank you! 🤘

Rob Chapman took a risk by asking subscribers to spec a guitar, and has said the some of the choices would not be ones that he would want. The fact that they have stuck with a reverse headstock has stopped me buying one, plus they had to change factories due to quality issues with the early batches. The latest samples seem to have improved, but are still not a guitar that says "Buy Me".

The biggest mistake Rob made when he got his brand up and running was being _so_ conservative with the design choices (and then all the other bullshit he heaped upon himself and his brand). I make a few guitars per year, and honestly it would be so damn easy to crank out S and T style guitars because their formulae as so well established. And yes I know the market encourages these types of designs because most players are quite conservative in their stylistic choices. I think with Chapman his brand could have survived and thrived if not for the man himself, so it wound up a convergence of guitars people could really just take or leave, and a guy running the show who came off a real tosser.

First time seeing one of your videos I really enjoyed it. I think the problem for Chapman is they've sort of rested on the laurels. Just turning out the same guitars in different colours as well as not aggressively trying to expand their artist roster. The whole KDH thing definitely damaged the reputation if you ask me that was mostly on how Rob Rob handled it. You definitely wrote. They could become an iconic brand. Look at PRS less than 50 years old, but due to the constant innovation they've become one of the free biggest guitar companies in the world. Over the last couple of years it feels like the collaborative element that may Chapman feel special and make fans connect to the brand has gone away for just finish updates of the same guitars. They brought this back recently but I think you may be a little too late for the casual player. I was really keen to get Chapman guitar but with the recent drop in collaborative design coupled with the churning out of the same guitars in different finishes. I'm really not that bothered about the brand anymore.
@JackTaylorGuitars
@JackTaylorGuitars Жыл бұрын
That means a lot to me dude, thank you. I'm stoked you enjoyed it! From what I can gather, they've still got a lot of fight in them and they are still doing relatively well. What you said about aggressively expanding the artist roster is a big one for me. Visibility from big players is going to be key to helping elevate them to that iconic status. It's a shame that quality gear can't do that alone anymore because this thing is one of my favourite guitars! They're on their way though with Chris from Black Stone Cherry and the guys from Bury Tomorrow but they definitely need more. Thanks again mate, I'm happy to have you around 🤘
@jamesdavies1179
@jamesdavies1179 Жыл бұрын
They remind me very much of Dean guitars in away they're also a young company all be it not Chapman young, Dean guitars makes some fantastic guitars but due PR issues with Gibson and a once stacked artist roster dwindling to almost nothing they seem to have faded into the background which is a great shame because going back 3 or 4 years ago if you wanted a high quality guitar at a reasonable price with quality parts Dean guitars for my money were one of the best options around in the £450-600 you got some really high quality stuff. I hope Chapman doesn't go the same way I don't think they will, I think they can pull it back by going back to their roots and building their roster. I personally don't think the guitar centre deal helped at all, although I'm sure it sounded like a good idea at the time to Chapman they'd have been better off sticking to high quality smaller retailers. It made the brand feel more special and QC could be better controlled.

Yeah man, what you're saying makes loads of sense to me. I don't think they will either, they're in a much better position. lovely playing, and great review one thing though. its not a hipshot bridge. its an OEM copy. might seem pernickity to say, but way back when the Ghostfret was released, it was claimed to be a hipshot bridge, which it was not probably not the worst thing anyone has ever done, and possibly a slip of the tongue, but another example of Chapman's lack of focus/ attention to detail/ economy with the truth i have played a lot of chapman - visit andertons regularly - and they are hit or miss. and i cannot live with the reverse headstock, looks stupid on a tele but everyone to their own - great video, subscribed

I have a 2015 ML1 in mahogany made before the product expansion and all of the drama. In my opinion, Chapman managed to make a fantastic guitar at a reasonable price for a long time, and they are a young brand that continues to make mistakes, but meets those challenges head on. He just wants to make guitar that people will like at a price that isn't ridiculous, and that's what makes him such an enigma. I have a Ghost Fret Pro and an ML1 Baritone, both neck thru, and they are both excellent guitars. I had them professionally set up and they play and sound every bit as good as any of my 3k+ Les Pauls, Teles, Robin, etc. The price of a guitar has very little to do with it's quality anymore. Also, the Ghost Fret Pro in middle position has THE best clean funk sound I've ever gotten from any guitar. And forget this bullshit about "out of the box" setup. You ship or drive a guitar from one country/state to another and it is going to shift. Guarantied. Even expensive ones. Do a professional level set up when a guitar arrives, and another in about 6 months when the wood has settled to your local climate, and many guitars will impress you that you would otherwise have passed over. Also, I would encourage any of you who have done a setup yourself on a guitar and still find it lacking to take it to an actual luthier and have the setup done again. A few hours of practice after watching youtube videos will in no way qualify you for the caliber of setup you can get from a professional.
@JackTaylorGuitars
@JackTaylorGuitars Жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video man, I'm glad your Chapmans are serving you well! I fully agree that every guitar needs a set up but I do think out of the box setup is still massively important. Not everyone has the money to go and get a luthier to do everything on a guitar to make it great. I'm not saying it's not beneficial but I always try to encourage people to be their own tech. Learn what they like and then they don't have to pay out the arse for something they can do themselves. But if you've got the cash, sure thing, paying a professional will only make your guitar better! Cheers dude 🤘
@ChristopherOrth
@ChristopherOrth Жыл бұрын
@@JackTaylorGuitars Don't get me wrong, there's no real reason a guitar should play terribly out of the box, other than nobody did a setup at the factor or during QA. But that's why the guitar is $100 less. :) I was commenting on how many people now somehow judge guitars on this metric, as if it's something that can ever be achieved consistently. Best any manufacturer can do is set up as best as possible, and ship. If the climates are similar from door to door and the wood was adequately dried before construction... you're probably ok. But fast dry wood in a hot climate (like where most guitars are made now) and ship it somewhere more temperate and less humid (like where most guitars are purchased) and you are in no way going to have a realistic metric of quality. Then add personal taste of each player and... you know.
@JackTaylorGuitars
@JackTaylorGuitars Жыл бұрын
Yeah I completely agree with that mate, that’s pretty much how I look at it. I expect a guitar to be reasonably playable out of the box knowing full well I’ll do my own setup anyway. In addition, Winnipeg only has 2 stores that could potentially carry the line, one being Long and McQuade and St Johns Music, the later being a Yamaha dealership. A few years ago, another now defunct store, Quest Musique, had an initial run of them. Beaucoup problemo, after that, they couldn’t get any restock. As a business owner, that would spell death to anything that was not readily available.

I used to love Chappers and Lees weekly reviews in college and would enjoy the genuine camaraderie and comedy that came with the videos. The only time I got to play one of their guitars though was a used one at a local guitar center and if I wasn’t a broke college kid at the time I probably would’ve bought it it was a red and black ghost fret for like $400 or something cheap and idk maybe the previous owner had it set up but the action was super nice and felt great to play. When the whole drama with Rob and that kid went down it was weird because it seemed like a misunderstanding then with the other guitar distributor it was the same sort of thing where I felt like there was more to the story then the public would ever know… I hope Chapman continues on and does well, (hell they can send me guitars to play on KZfaq lmao) but tbh I really just want the weekly Lee and Rob reviews and challenges but Robs doing what he thinks is best for his family so I respect it

I'm not a fan of the guy or his guitars, but that was very nice playing in your demo at the start. Losing Rabea must have been a blow to the brand. Now that's a dude I do have time for.

Dude I got 3 Pro level models and 1 Standard Chapman, all great instruments. The only other brand I still like beside Chapman guitars are ESP LTD 1000 series. BTW I also tried a Solar V1.6 last year, and was absolute garbage quality, sent it back to Thomann.

not my style guitar- but if you like high gain playing, you could do worse..you aren't going to get any dynamics from those pups ,,you get louder and louder...

It's definitely great for high gain playing, that's for sure, but you might be surprised by these pickups. They're not a super high output like a JB or distortion and they've got far more clarity. Probably more of a mid to high output pickup. I just like a bit of gain on my tones 😂 Thanks for watching man!

@@JackTaylorGuitars I guess all the magic ís in the neck. If guitar feels great then you want to hold it. I find it sounding good - it is fitted with Chapman pups, not Seymours. Little bit too beefy neck pickup for me. I am running it into DSL20, so rock ís where I feel comfortable. And it does the job well.

If you like the neck profile, the pickup config and the style get one. Other than that who cares? Seems like a decent bloke but with growth comes the need to promote the business and the "Personal and down home" angle slowly goes away. Always get what you like not what is popular.
