The audience questions for Ask Kati Anything ep. 9 are:
What can one do if small tasks feel impossible or out of reach. Simple things like getting out of bed, basic hygiene, making a decent meal, etc.
How do you tell your therapist you are super depressed if she thinks you have been doing so well?
I really struggle to make decisions, even small silly ones. How can someone get better at decision-making, especially if they have anxiety, depression or other mental illnesses that add to the difficulty?
Hey Kati, can you talk about depression/anxiety getting worse with the coronavirus and how to prevent mental health from getting really bad again with all the stress going on?
Hi Kati, I identify as a Christian and there seems to be a big stigma of "hide your mental health issues" in various religious communities. What are some ways that those of us in these different religious communities can help to reduce that stigma?
Hi Kati, I'm currently in school to become a social worker- as I enjoy helping people out. However, I often get frustrated with myself because I feel like I can’t truly help others when I can't even help myself. My question for you would be… Do you struggle to help others when you're going through a rough time yourself? If so, how do you cope with that?
Why when I’m an adult and I seek for my parents approval and permission on things ? It’s like I want to do what I want because I am an adult , but at the same time I feel guilty for not listening to them .

Thank you for addressing how churches generally struggle to acknowledge and talk about mental health. I've been struggling with PTSD/Depression for years and if I could count the times people have told me to 'pray about it', I'd be rich! I decided last year that I was over it and started writing a blog about my journey and shared it with them...the more open the discussion about mental health is, the better! Xx

I work a graveyard shift right now, and these and OTDM have been really wonderful to keep me company all alone in the middle of the night. There are a lot of ugly things happening in my life, and stressful changes in my therapy, on top of the world going crazy. I'm so grateful just to listen to a normal conversation and to a voice that cares.

Hi Kati, I think that the chemical "oxytocin" is what leads to calming down when in the presence of others, specially when hugging,... It is for example what calms babies down when they are held by their mother. Not 100% sure, but I think that's what I learnt during my nursing studies :)

Oh my gosh .... #5 great question! I struggled with this as a kid. I have struggled pretty badly with depression since 13 and I felt like I was a bad Christian because I struggled. I felt judgement and condemnation. No kid should ever feel that, especially when dealing with depression... later it turns out for me is that it was actually bipolar. No one should feel ‘less than’ just because ours is ‘hidden’. ‘Hey mister quadriplegic, why aren’t you walking? You need to pray more’ .... pisses me off ... rant over

Vulnerability is so powerful, being uncomfortable is growth and crying is ok. ♥️ Don’t be afraid to be human. My therapist 32yrs old passed away suddenly. She always told me, “Victoria , there is nothing you can show me that isn’t human.” I wish to pass this on to you. I encourage you to share that video. It would be an honor and a blessing. However it is your choice and either way you got my 100% support 💕

That last question really hit me. I don't seek permission but like an earlier question, I struggle to make decisions for myself. I never even really thought about it but my parents never built confidence in me. I never heard anything encouraging, if anything it was all the negative things you mentioned that were the norm for me. I don't know that parents building confidence in kids is really talked about. It reminds me a lot of "good mother/father" messages. I recommend that asker and anyone else who didn't have a parent who told them that they loved them etc. to read the good parent messages. The first time I came across it was reading Jasmin Lee Cori's book 'The Emotionally Absent Mother' and I had to stop at chapter 2 because I started crying in public. The things you suggested at the end - purchasing something without asking, using a service and looking at reviews without asking etc. aren't weird suggestions at all - that's what I did when I was desperate to gain some independence from my controlling parent and typically demanded that everything be run through them.

Please get help people. "Just pray about it" didn't help me when I had my depression. I was praying, asking others to do the same but it felt like God didn't took care of me and I was so upset when my pastor said these words to me. So I stopped going to my own church and went to my friends church while I was healing and getting therapie. A few month later I returned back to my own church, healed and stronger. Pray, seek help asap and talk to the right friends. You will get there. Much love from the Netherlands 👋🏾

Restrictions are easing where I am at, we only have 1 active case of the virus in the province, all others have recovered. 🙂 hopefully with restrictions easing up it'll allow for people to get more support and flatten the curve on the MH and violence that has resulted. I run a group with my fellow Christians (over zoom) and we just talk and catch up. Yeah we pray for each other but mostly just there to be supportive. I think the thing about Christianity is that we shouldn’t have to shove Jesus down someone’s throat or even mention the Bible or prayer...we should just be honest and open and vulnerable and kind with each other. I’ve used both my faith and mental health resources to pull me out of a lot of things.

honestly, "gold star decisions" seems like no decisions at all. if you can't stand black cofee, then choosing creamed coffee is not really a decision. it simply happens because you don't like it black. in this situation choosing black coffee seems more like a decision. you decided something for a change. then again, you doing it just because you got tired of creamed coffee... so it's not really a decision, it's just because... i don't know, do we even make decisions?

You're paying them to provide a service which they have obtained additional training and education to offer. Most people go into that field because they inherintly care; they are already the type to invest and want to help, they have simply gone a step further gain attentional training to help WELL. So any good one cares, yes. Think about it as paying a painter for their work; they paint because they love it. They charge because supplies and training have a cost as well as their time is valuable for the service they provide.

Ash G I’d double check what kind of notification you have. Maybe it’s customized and you don’t have all notifications on. Just a thought😉

15:33 just tell, there's no judgment in therapy. 😇️ but when i come home i'll judge you all the way. 😖 because we [all] have our own judgments. 👁 i don't know, i find it funny 16:55 but what if some therapists do? how can you possibly know about all the therapists in the world? i'm pretty sure there's some who do enjoy it. and most if not enjoying it, they'll still *have thoughts* about you! 😱 because we all humans (or should i say primates?) alrighty 🤐

The funny thing is…I have cptsd and covid doesn’t even bother me. It’s like you say the brain associates everything with trauma when you have ptsd anyways so covid is no biggie. Covid hasn’t affected my life whatsoever. Sounds strange huh? Smh

Katie I think you need to put the video out, all you video reach and touch someone in some way. This whole entire time is awful and I struggle everyday. It can only help someone.
