For over two hundred years people have failed to agree on wether or not dingoes are dogs, wolves, or something else entirely
in this video we discuss some of the differences with dingoes and dogs, and how they fit into the canine family tree

Dingos are a bit like Australians themselves. People can breed with them, and thats why you see so many half australians in the wild. But Australians are just that little bit different. We call them Homo Sapiens Sapiens Australis.

Awesome video mate learnt a few cool new things. Another few really interesting difference between Domestic Dogs and Dingos is that Dingos are substantially more flexible than domestic dogs. Aswell as how when falling dogs have that burst of adrenaline rush through their body which causes them to go stiff but Dingos go floppy which allows them to fall from high places and not break limbs. Not to mention how high they can jump and their intelligence is truly something else. Some Dingos are straight up Houdini's and just find crazy ways to escape their enclosures.

I see this issue is still in the news - I read an article on it yesterday, in fact. It seems that the current argument is that dingoes aren't different enough to warrant being a separate species from a purely scientific standpoint, but from a conservation standpoint, being a separate species makes it far easier to protect. Hence, scientists are disagreeing on which view has precedence. Or at least that was the gist of the article.

Im sure there are also significant differences in brain structure and in behavior. From what I know about domestic dogs, one key thing that distinguishes them behaviorally is the way they observe human actions and emotions in order to respond. Domestic dogs pay a lot of attention to the human face, something that they really don't do with each other, and something that grey wolves raised in captivity don't do at all. The evolution of dogs is quite fascinating, especially since it's possible that the beginning stages weren't even intentional. I'd be interested to know more details about how dingo behavior differs from that of a domestic dog

The eternal question; what makes up a species? Being able to produce fertile offspring some says, but this need not always be a fact, e.g. when two species joins into one or separates into two. Hybridization may be far more important to speciation than previously assumed (even today). The really big question (to me), is whether the common ancestor of the Canis group really was some kind of a (lost) wolf or perhaps something a bit different?

Well if they descended from Canis lupus familiaris (dogs), they should be a subspecies of dog otherwise familiaris is a paraphyletic group. So are they indeed descended from domesticated dogs? Unlike mustang, it's not certain that they are, but if they are, they should be a subspecies of dog, dissimilar from a breed, as they were never bred.

I would love to know more about the ecological behavioral differences between feral dogs and Dingoes.I believe Dingoes are more solitary than feral dogs, so presumably don't hunt in packs? And do they target different prey species? So would it be fair to say they do not occupy the same ecological niche? Also after seeing what ticks can do to pet dogs I find it hard to believe feral domestic dogs could last more than a few months in the wild before they would succumb to tick born disease. So many questions sorry!

I will adopt one eventually even if I have to fly to Australia to do so. When you discuss their morphology vs dogs you neglect to consider the Siverian Husky or Shiba Inu; both of which share MANY of their physical and behavioral traits. I would bet money that Dingoes are more closely related to the ancient Spitz breeds of dog than any other. As far as I'm concerned they are desert Huskies. Both have a STRONG prey drive, have lived both domesticated and feral as well as being companions to their respective native or aboriginal peoples. I have trained search & rescue and hunting dogs; though I think they would be suboptimal as the latter, the former is a service I think they could excel at extremely well. Especially in and around the Mojave Desert where I live.

It doesn't matter how you call them or classify them. Dingos originated from Asian domesticated dogs some 5000-6000 years ago. So they are dogs for sure. Then there is some evolution in the Australian continent which lead to some different characteristics from other dogs. Whether the difference is so big that you can classify them into a separate species, is debatable. Scientist estimate the dogs were first domesticated around 20,000 years ago.

Are you able to tame or Domesticate a dingo,can you have them as a pet with other dogs? Do you thing dingos could become domesticated in a few years?
@WickedWildlife
@WickedWildlife 6 жыл бұрын
Hailstorm K9 dingoes can certainly be raised with people and dogs (Aztec lives with me and my 7 working sheep dogs) however they need very good fencing and are not generally an obedient animals, they are often described as being catlike in behaviour In theory it would certainly be possible to domesticate then but it would take many generations and also would not be benificial to their conservation
@loisstenner123
@loisstenner123 5 жыл бұрын
It would be relatively easy to selectively breed dingoes that would eventually be just as tame as spaniels. One would just set up a colony of as many dingoes as one could handle and start encouraging them to breed. You select the most friendly individuals from every litter and then just breed from them. ( Its very cruel because what are you going to do with the remainder of the litters and the parents of the litters. You only keep the current friendlies at any one time. Anyone who does this should get a substantial prison sentence. ) At the end of this process after hundreds of breeding cycles you end up with a guaranteed pet. Guaranteed. These pets would have a lot of genetic bankruptcy and expensive illnesses because they come from a very small gene pool and would have the same inbreeding problems that pedigree dogs have . This process has already been carried out in Russia with wild foxes where they selected purely for neoteny. Dingoes have been separated from other dogs for a relatively small amount of time so even now they are very much more capable of being pets than wild foxes. There are many pet dingoes now in Austalia although they are a little more trouble than pet dogs. Also some interbreeding has occured in dingoes with pet dogs. I am not sure what percentage of wild dingoes is domesticated dogs. blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/mans-new-best-friend-a-forgotten-russian-experiment-in-fox-domestication/

@@loisstenner123 Yes I saw that Russian study. Problem is if you domesticate dingo, it's really no longer a dingo but something very different, like the difference between gray wolf and domestic dog, you can't exactly say domestic dog is a wolf any longer. I agree with your sentiments, no need to create a domesticed dingo canid.

@@billguyan9626 Dingos are dogs, which makes them a feral animal (a feral animal is a domesticated animal that has returned to living in the wild). Feral animals aren't protected like native animals are. You're allowed to shoot feral animals, but shooting native animals is a crime. The reason some people try to claim dingos are not dogs is because they want them to have the protection that native animals have. If they are dogs,, then they're ferals who can be shot. If they're not dogs, then they're a unique species native to Australia and can not be shot. But they are definitely dogs.

However, for all I know, sometimes this cross may produce fertile offspring. After all, when Pacific Black ducks cross with Mallards, sometimes the offspring are sterile, sometimes they're not. But dingoes and domestic dogs have no problem producing fertile offspring (I used to have part dingo bitches who successfully had their own litters of pups to domestic dogs).

Those are invalid comparisons and are not anything similar at all when talking about dingoes and domestic dogs. All those animal comparisons you posted except the dingo and dog have millions of years of evolutionary separation (heck sharks are fish and dolphins are mammals) and don't have DNA studies saying they are the same, and don't readily breed and have fertile offspring and considered the same species. Dingoes are classified as Canis Lupus Dingo by the Scientific community. Dingoes are wild dogs.

They referred them as wild dogs but they are not actually dogs. They thought they are wild dogs in the past because of appearance.

If I saw a Dingo just walking around, I would mistake it for a normal pet dog. It looks very similar to my dog. My dog is a mixed breed but it couldn't be part Dingo, because we live in the US.

Question 1 how do you get one? Question 2 where do you get one in Australia?
@WickedWildlife
@WickedWildlife 6 жыл бұрын
Blue Husky dingoes can be kept in Victoria and Western Australia with a licence (pending enclosure requirements) In NSW they require no licence and in SA and QLD they are confiscated and euthanised Most states that allow them have Dingo groups you can contact, but I never recommend them to someone expecting a dog. Think of them like a giant cat haha

Well, Shiba Inu are domesticated dogs from Asian Wolves. Dingo are descended from the same line, which are Dholes.

A shibu was probably selective bred from an Asian dingo before the onslaught of imported mongrels bred it out, there is a new guinnea highlander that is closer to the shibu look that may have been used

I get that dingos aren't domestic dogs. But how are they not wolves?
@WickedWildlife
@WickedWildlife 2 жыл бұрын
Many scientists debate wether domestic dogs even evolved from the grey wolf or another species that’s now no longer around Confusingly it has more to do with where scientists draw the line then how distantly related they actually are

Alan Walsh its gone back and forth a number of times. Each time a study comes out for one over the other it swings back Unfortunately a lot of the study’s that place them back into Canis lupus are funded by the agricultural industry and its convenient for them as far as legislation goes around culling “wild dogs” if dingoes are also classed as dogs themselves
@alanwalsh1596
@alanwalsh1596 6 жыл бұрын
Wicked Wildlife interesting findings! My only concern for them being a species is that they have had such little time to evolve. I also subscribed
@WickedWildlife
@WickedWildlife 6 жыл бұрын
Alan Walsh thanks for subscribing mate :) I guess I’m aloud to take a dig at the agricultural sector as farm work is actually how I make a living. As for the time it takes to evolve, dingoes likely started diverging from other canids long before they reached Australia (hence we have singing dogs in Papua New Guinae that are also classified as Canis dingo (as a subspecies) However as modern dogs immigrated through Asia (around the time agriculture arrived there) the existing Dingo like animals where likely just mixed in with the new arrivals, resulting in pariah dogs of south each Asia that look Dingo like but don’t ever seem to pass purity tests
@alanwalsh1596

Wicked Wildlife it just occurred to me that since there were multiple moments of domestication the dingo could be another moment of domestication that ended up back in the wild
@WickedWildlife
@WickedWildlife 6 жыл бұрын
Alan Walsh very possible Although it’s highly likely that they only went through the very first steps of domestication as there is nothing in aboriginal culture about selectively breeding animals for desired traits, and they retain the generally aloof, independent nature you see in other captive but non domestic canids
