Are Driving Lessons Getting Cheaper in Great Britain?

Driving lesson prices went up very quickly compared to inflation between January 2020 and June 2021. But between June 2021 and November 2023 did inflation and average earnings catch up with driving lesson prices or has the rise in driving lesson prices still been higher?

When I passed my driving test in February 1974 the cost per hour was £1.50 . Best £80 I ever spent, even though it took me 3 attempts. 50 years driving this year and I still have a clean licence. I wish I could thank my old instructor but she is sadly long gone now.

Well, I can firmly say that you understand free-market economic theory much better than most ordinary people, politicians, civil servants, public policymakers and even some actual economists! One little niggle is the use of RPI rather than CPI as RPI consistently overestimates inflation. Doesn't stop the government cheekily using it when getting money off you, but they use CPI for things where they give you money!

ngl, the majority of people wanting to learn each year are teenagers who've just turned 17 or there abouts, who are more than likely earning minimum wage (minimum wage for people their age is about half as much). To expect them to work more than three hours for an hour lesson is quite unfair honestly. Yes, some people will have their parents pay for them, and others earn well for their ages, but on average the affordability of that should always remain or be lower than the 1:3 hours trained vs hours worked ratio imho Bearing in mind the DVLA average for driving lessons to be test ready is 45 hours! It would take someone age 23+ on minimum wage 18 days of their working life to afford just a 1:3 ratio, and 36 days for someone aged 17 on minimum wage! (and that's spending your entire wages, not to mention the current cost of living) I have respect for driving instructors, as my father was one himself, and I've recently passed my own test with the help of great tutelage of another. But anyone who thinks it should cost more is absoloutely delusional
@jmdev8775
@jmdev8775 2 ай бұрын
To play devil's advocate here... Whilst I agree that for a teenager on minimum wage it is expensive, I don't entirely believe it is unfair. I see learning to drive as an investment, not an expense. While 1:3 is an expensive ratio, teenagers (just like adults) will buy a holiday that greatly beats 1:3, are those prices considered unfair too? Especially when you consider what you're paying for: - an experienced teacher's knowledge - their time - their petrol - use of their specialised vehicle - their insurance - wear & tear And the outcome: - transport freedom - cut costs of travel (if you get around a lot) I actually think it's quite fair :)
@Big-Timbo
@Big-Timbo 2 ай бұрын
@@jmdev8775 1:3 I think is fair, it's for people who think it should be more than that I disagree with. It is an investment for sure, but just getting the lessons is only one step of that, still got to pay for: tests, a car, insurance and road tax etc. Not to mention most will have to probably take time off work to get in the hours needed for their lessons/test. Also think the holiday comparison is a bit off, as if you take a week off and spend say 500 (probably the average I was spending on a holiday at that age, 27 now so wasn't that long ago). That's 500 divided by a week's working hours of 37.5 (not to mention the out of work hours you're on holiday), equalling 13.33 an hour, which is still a lot less than 1:3 at any minimum wage despite the age range.

Also i know you mentioned in a video a while back all the costs instructors have to pay a year but even so some are still touching £45,000 - £50,000 a year which is still exceptionally huge. Yet some people who want to learn to drive are barely on £12,000 a year with stupid zero hour contracts.

In France there is a huge problem with driving lesson prices. If you want to learn the traditional way, you need to register into a traditional driving school (one that has a physical office) where the price per hour averages 70€, sometimes 80€ in Paris. These driving schools have a business model centered around getting you to stay as long as possible. Also, they're known to underpay their instructors, which obviously lowers the quality of the lessons, which makes you pay more hours, etc... Thankfully, things are slowly changing with "online" driving schools. They're basically just platforms that match students and freelance driving instructors for minimal side fees, lowering the price of a driving lesson to 44€, with most of the money going directly to the instructor and not some CEO's Porsche

Surely Paris discourages driving altogether. Like with London, a car is unnecessary in most cases as they have extensive public transport.

it is why there has always been a shortage of large goods drivers, is because company's don't want to pay above minimum wages, like told in 2006 never to accept a job that pays less than £17 an hour for a cat. c licence holder, but then going down the job centre and all the jobs were offering minimum wage of something like £4.88 an hour, so the trucking industry wouldn't offer above £6 per hour, then when the foreigners flooded the industry they were doing it for peanuts, so taken until the pandemic to get a half decent wage here in Wales. but just looking it up, they are still offering around the £15 mark in 2024, and that is after inflation for the passed 18 years.

@@harrym1862 yet they did reduce the bus fares to £2 except TfL (meaning Trnsport for London? which is already under £2 - £1,75) and Mancester. TFL also planned to remove the travelcard from Network Rail in July 2023 but got delayed to January 2024 before withdrawing the plan to do so (same thing can be said with ticket offices). TFL is also keeping the prices of public transport until at least March 2025 which meant that prices haven't changed since March 2023. They also made public transport on Friday (from 8 March 2024) cheaper meaning the prices would be as if it was on a weekend. I have made progressively less over this period and in terms of real earnings I and many others are demonstrably worse off. It is worth it and driving instructors should be fairly paid, But I can imagine for many it will force them to not be able to learn to drive. Rising prices are present if the inflation rate remains unchanged or even if it falls and if the inflation rate then rises, prices will rise at an even higher rate. Just was curious as to what metric you used as it might mean that the inflation versus lessons is even higher than you display

Hi Richard! Great Video. Can I ask you to talk about a problem in modern cars. Big one. Newer vehicles have AUTOmatic headlight, But in a lot of rainy and Foggy wheather they don't tun on! So new cars drive with their lights off! People think that they're on but in reality they're driving whit lights off. Quite dangereous. Also speedomeders and rev counters are digital or are always illuminated. In older Vehicles they were illuminated only if lights were on. I think is another key reason why someone at night don't realise that they're driving with something important off!

I’ve been an ADI for nearly 40 years, and I’ve seen recessions a massive influx in trainees, and of course the lockdowns. Lessons generally were to low for years. I’d say a good experienced ADI with a good track record I’d say average price would £40-45 an hour lot can depend on location too. Are a few out there who are well above 45 mark you must also take into account running costs have increased a lot and insurance gone through the roof!

In the netherlands we have it at around 50-60 euros per hour, also due to lockdown the exam centres were overloaded, our system is a government agency CBR has exam centres where they have examiners working and you plan a test with an examiner not your own instructor and all the driving schools are dependent on the exam centres and there was a big hold up like 6 month wait time

When you look at the cost of everything fuel buying a car insurance everything food....min wages does need to go up i believe £12.50 to around 13.50ph or so, I passed my driving instructor theory tests in 2003 I did it for a few years and fell out of love with being a DI, and the hours where sometime very unsocial, the market at the time was saterated and people doing lessons and often bad ones on the cheap, I do EICR Testing and pat testing and my experience is if you want a good job you generallly you what you pay for.

The number the minimum wage is means nothing its still the minimum and its still just about enough to get by on. Companies that are making increasingly high profits on the back of rising prices need to stop being so greedy and offer genuine rises without also hiking everything up massievly. Its time they took a hit too.

Hi Richard, I've already passed my test (January!) but I have a video request for you. Recently I had to drive a car filled with passengers and luggage. It took me quite a while (and I'm still not confident) to adjust to the different weight of the car - how it affected braking, corners, hill starts in traffic, etc. Up until that point I had only ever driven either by myself or with 1 passenger in the front seat. Are there better ways to learn this difference to not get caught out by surprise?

Off topic but I wanted your thoughts on something, Richard. 18 year old (nearly 19) from london here. I think insurance prices are really unfair for new young drivers. It renders consistent driving pretty much impossible for me. I can’t even get any quotes for temporary insurance on family and friends’ car. Insurance prices on a .9l fiat 500 for me are still ludicrous. It’s frustrating because I can’t continue to drive and improve my skills. And all of this just because I am a young man and not all of us are irresponsible 😢 What are your thoughts?

@@abdulwakil2613 Its also because you're in London. I don't what trickery if any you've tried but always make sure you arrange insurance to start 21 days after purchase it brings costs down big time, consider a telematics policy, give them your license number and put a good 2nd driver on the policy either your Mum or Dad depending on has a better effect and also have their license number too if their license is clean. If you get a telematics policy purchase less mileage than you need as it will reduce the cost and you can buy more miles later on when your good driving score on the box brings down the cost of additional miles that was an option for me when I had my 1st years insurance. Quick question though, wouldn't it be better to take the median (or middle) household incomes instead of the mean (or average)? I'm only mentioning this because the mean doesn't take income inequality into account. The richest 1% of individuals are outliers is going to skew the average numbers higher compared to the median in which the poorest and the richest outliers wouldn't be taken into account.
