Thanks for having me guys! Was fun hanging out and chatting bikes. Currently in Avoriaz with a 180/165mm Dune, with SX motor. It’s been incredible the last few days - I’d say better handling than both full fat and non-EMTBs.

EBikes on the trails are fine but they dont want Saurons on the trails. Its basically an e dirt bike imo

I think the main reason people de-restrict their bikes is not so much for the assistance to take them to 20+mph, but more to negate the mechanical drag of the motor over the assistance cut off. Those who have ridden the bosch gen 2 & 3 will know its like riding through treacle whilst dragging an anchor!!

To each their own but I’m itching to pick up an e-bike soon. I work a physical job and as much as I appreciate a good sufferfest, when I’m off work I want to be able to crank out as many laps as possible on my local trails without feeling devastated after a long day of work.

8 years on gen 1 levo, derestricted the motor 2 years ago to 25 mph, then back to 20 mph when I got a new motor and I keep it there now due to warranty reasons. I really liked the 25 mph setting, it was pretty hard to hit the wall at 25, but now I am constantly hitting the wall at 20 mph, I think 15 mph would be maddening.

what you guys are missing..is the flow section right after a 20mph+ down hill section to immediate uphill section and you can't keep your speed up ...the feeling sucks that's why I want unrestricted...your restriction should be defined by you gear ratios not a artificial speed set by government...freedom brothers freedom

Hello from Marin County! In the last 2 days I've ridden over 100km of Mtb trails in the GGNRA and at Tamarancho with my Canyon Spectral On CF8 (900w). Could not have done that on a Mtb, but with an Emtb I can ride for days and days and days.... Going out again today for about 20k. Still have an acoustic, but only for jump parks. Love your show!

I agree with Doddy. I have had a decade on normal MTBs and when wanting an Ebike, I was looking for a bike that felt as close to a non-Ebike as possible but could extend the time and distance I could ride and getting up the climb as fast possible wasn't as big a deal to me. The Levo SL fitted that requirement. There's definitely a market for the lightweight bikes and there's still a lot of people like me that still like to physically push themselves, and my short travel Stumpy fills that need.

In Quebec, e-bike are everywhere big time, even I, who was against ebike, I now own a Heckler SL (my back hurt too much with a smash disk on my lower back) and I love it. I can now climb a mountain in 10-15 minutes when I used to take 45-70 minutes to climb. And the feel of the bike is as good as my regular bike.

I find the speed limiter is rarely an issue on the trail. When I'd really like a higher limit is to be able to ride to the trail instead of having to load the bike and drive to the trail head. And for longer commutes etc.

I have an e-bike, a Mondraker Crafty R, and I love it BUT I have noticed that my quads and overall fitness have been slowly declining since I started e-biking. For this reason I am thinking about getting an acoustic bike to have alongside my e-bike. I'll use the e-bike when I ride with my GF since she also has an e-bike and use the e-bike when I plan on doing a long mission with lots of climbing, but I will use the acoustic bike when I am going out for a solo shred after work and things like that. This way I get to appreciate both sides because I love e-bikes with the power and the weight helps them to plow through the rough stuff but I like the intense workout and feeling of satisfaction after a good ride on an acoustic bike along with the lightweight that allows you to easily bunny hop obstacles and flick the bike through corners etc. So yeah I think I'm actually swinging back the other way now that I have been e-biking for about 3 years. I don't think acoustic bikes will die, they are fun in their own way and e-bikes do not replace them, they augment them.

15 mph is way too slow. Trail speed is higher than 15 mph half the time. It should be at least 20 maybe 25

My thoughts about derestriction. You are limited by gearing. You're still gonna be capped at 28-32 mph at best. I've run a Levociratptor on my Levo for a couple of years now. My average speed on most rides is about 12 mph. Max is usually 25 - 30 and I only hit that on fire roads typically. If the levo didn't feel like I dropped an anchor at the 20 mph cutoff, I would have never unlocked it.

I've ridden bikes for over three decades and sincerely when I first tried an ebike a whole new world has been opened... I'd never go back to "normal bikes" again.

Full power and higher speed restrictions. You should be able to pedal your e-bikes as fast as you can with a regular bike. I can pedal my regular mountain bike up to 30mph on flat ground and I should be allowed to do the same on my ebike. As Rob describes, it can be dangerous not having enough speed to clear jumps etc. Also, the US does have walk mode and don’t dare suggest we should have a 15mph limit!

Great show guys. Congrats! My feeling on the ebike vs MTB... I have had my Canyon Spectral On for 9 months and I absolutely love it. When I go out on my own, I almost always prefer it to my Neuron classical. However, what I enjoy most of all is my weekly 5 hour Trail route with my MTB group which are 90% classical MTB and I always go on my Neuron classical. There is nothing to compare to the comradeship of slogging it out on climbs and bombing decents with your group mates with only your own physical capabilities for getting you round.

Here in Australia - I'd prefer to see 32kmh limit since you need some additional speed to launch on some jumps.

When it comes to new bikes I still want that bigger battery with at least 85nm and don’t want to compromise with downgrading forks to 36’s I still want the 38’s

I ride an E160 and in Australia we have the 15mph/25km limit but I found it too dangerous when it comes to maintaining speed and learning to jump as it seemed to taper off towards the upper limit. Switched to the US 20mph/32km speed and find it perfect.

I do run those silver Codes from 2011, they work perfectly. Even some 10yo youngsters were impressed trailside that how fancy they are, and if it is a new tech brake... :)

The main issue with EMTB is the price, you talk about the cube been a really great deal at 5k but even that is a lot of money even with a both me and the mrs on decent money, with kids car mortgage etc 5k is way outside my budget as I would think it is for most people

New to the channel, new to EMTB. I am on a new Orbea Rise H10 with a few factory upgrades, I only have this because it was such a great deal at 35% off. I'd been looking for the right bike for a while, well riding my Trek Fuel which I still love. My Trek still has a place, I still use it from time to time to ride with friends who don't have EMTB. All this said, hands down my Rise feels better, to me. I love that bike, it flows so much nicer. I understand, they are different bike, different goe, Fox Factory verses DVO and I'm getting older. I like the help, I like being able to do a 30K day at a trail centre verses a 15K day in the same amount of time and believe it or not. My fitness level has gone up this season on the EMTB. Great to see Doddy by the way.

Im 61 and ride a lot at Sherwood Pines which is relatively flat. 15MPH is pathetic because a the fun zone speed around the 9 mile loop is between 18 and 23. That means that I would need to push a Bosch motor above the assist level for the entire lap which is no fun and no easier than a regular pedal bike so I run a Volspeed V4 which has a 28mph limit which I rarely hit on the flat.

I still ride my single speed hard tail 29r for times I know I can only ride less than an hour. Pretty rare these days as even if I'm pressed for time I can just change up the ride to session some downhill sections/jumps and really dial in timing, technique, etc... Also, I live in the midwest USA and the heat/humidity have really been keeping me from riding as much in summer months since 2018 when I had a heat injury during a road race (on a tandem with my college age daughter that was also melting down). Since getting the emtb (Giant Trance X E+ 29 20mph) fall 2022, I can go on days I would have had to pass since the emtb can help me stay out of that red zone when climbing where my core body temp soars out of control - the added air speed from the assist makes a huge difference. Having a bike with more travel than my single speed or even my Giant Anthem X (100/100) is just a lot more fun too.

I live in the US and our local trails just started allowing EMTB's last year in 2023. It's still a pretty taboo subject for many riders, people love to hate them, but the mindset is starting to change. Im seeing way more ebikes than a year ago.

Re the speed limits here in New Zealand, most EMTB's are sold with a 32kph cutoff point (as my own EMTB has), and it's great. There is a guy here, who is getting the EP8/EP801 (can't remember which one specifically) road bike versions with the 45kph limits on them, and swapping them out on peoples Shimano powered e-bikes. Re the 32kph limit motors though, I'm fat and old, and on more flat and flow trails, it's not uncommon to hit it when out by myself and having a quick 'fun' / 'blow the cobwebs out' ride! Anything less re max speed assist limit would do my head in in all reality.

32kph all day, everyday. I hit the limiter on trails regularly. Top speed is typically lower on the 29er Rail than on a 2019 27.5 Trance. While average speed on the Rail is higher. Hitting the speed limiter is like biking through treacle......... Why not a 32kph constant speed limiter combined with a x sec 40kph burst allowance? Like an overboost feature that only lasts for x time and only if certain parameters are met, like cadence of 120 for 6 pedal rotations unlocks 10 sec speed boost for as long as you maintain cadence......

I know I will get fitter if I ride my mountain bike but I don’t enjoy, over all the ride. I have far more smiles when riding my e-bike. But when it comes to corners my mountain bike absolutely destroys the E-bike. Having both is best !!!!

Hmmmm.... Question: Why aren't analog bikes restricted? I can achieve a much, much higher speed on my acoustic compared to me Eeb. Surely that's more dangerous and factoring the higher forces involved negates any argument about trail damage etc etc? I completely agree with Rob about the speed limiters for a good reason: Sometimes when on bigger terrain or jumps you need to kick down to recoup lost speed. You can all say just pedal harder but I can kick out 700ws under peak and it's like hitting a wall. Enough so that I can see it being problematic for ebikes clearing obstacles that analog bikes can.

that normal vs eeb conversation got funny. I got both ride both, i dont feel i miss out not taking my ebike somewhere. For me the ebikes replaced the uplift at big places, opened up places to explore. Theres a few places round surrey ive gone on the ebike learnt the trails then gone back on my normal. They both have a place in my shed. Also if your a trail builder ebike is the dream for carrying stuff in and running tracks in.

Electronic derailleurs solve a problem that doesn't exist while introducing more points of failure and things to worry about, because now you have a little electronic mechanism that you can't fix in the field and a battery you have to keep charged. The concept only makes sense in one case: The Pinion MGU.

On a point Doddy covered about % of sales I read somewhere that mondrakers e-bike sales has just surpassed their analog bike sales worldwide I think this will be a common occurrence across brands and if you don’t have an e-bike offering I think you will struggle to remain competitive, personally I ride a Trek Fuel EXe with the TQ motor my first e-bike and I absolutely love it natural feel with a little bit of help and still feel like Ive had a good workout at the end of the ride great podcast guys 👊

I ride in a very wealthy area in Norcal, I despised all the ebikes that were taking over the trails as I suffered up the climbs. Just built up my Nicolai QLF due to a couple of knee replacements . Before I went in for surgery a few weeks ago it occured to me I rarely ever see an analog bike that isn't a gravel bike. Everyone is on ebikes (mostly Levo and Pivots). I will join them soon. BTW- My Nicolai has walk mode on my Race Motor. I also have those exact Intend forks on my Nicolai as well. Any resistance to ebikes in US is only from Surron type emoto bikes not these pedal ebikes. In US many parents are buying their 10 yo these $5000 e moto bikes and the kids basically blow through any trail rules without regard for anyone as kids will do.

Age 55,riding most of my life almost everyday.I still love my singlespeed steel hardtail.I don't have any reason to change.

Really like this podcast. Doddy was a great addition for this week. Question for you all. E-bike Hardtails, why are most of them just for urban riding. Is there just no market for a really decent one? I love my hardtail orbea laufey and would love that geometry and travel (I’ve upped it to 160 from 140) with a motor. What is your take on it?

I'm with Adam, 25kph is plenty because if we had a higher limit, the VERY NEXT THING that would happen here in the UK is that EMTBs would start getting banned on towpaths, parks etc because people would complain about irresponsible riders.. No thanks. Yes I'd like to be able to do 20mph in town, but not at the expense of having a bike that's legally considered a normal bike

The way Yamaha implemented their speed limit (32km/h) is so natural and I didn't have an issue with it but now I'm on a Bosch again the chip is a must. The drag and switch off when you hit the limit is so shit.

Very good discussions, I love the differences of opinion, which clearly represent the differences out there. 2 things, 1 I don't get discussing in certain debates on speed limits on EMTB's, I agree that for an MTB or EMTB, there is no use in exceeding 15 mph on trails (flat and uphill) on the other hand everyone exceeds 20+ mph going downhill, engine or not. On the road, trained cyclists well exceed 28 mph with their 5-10 kg bikes and their power. The only difference with EMTB is that everyone regardless of physical fitness can reach these speeds. So there are many things missing when we debate the limit speeds on EMTB's AND E BIKES.

Have 3 e-bikes 3 analogue and riding all of them depending on the terrain/trails and of course it depends on my mood so love all of them.

very nice talk! -hands down guys, After two years of riding a full power enduro ebike (26.5Kg) I realized that I wanted something lighter, there were just sales on kenevo sl. The engine support is only 35 Nm in boost mode, but it's enough for me, it will help me on the hardest climbs, but I'm not lazy and I still train on gravel and stumpjumper once a week. The transition from Kenevo SL to Stumpjuper or my AM bike Kona process 153 is not as shocking as from a full power ebike.

I used to have a Focus Jam2 set at the US 20mph motor and i absolutely support the idea of upping the limit to 20mph. It’s so much more natural to the feel of the bike. It’s hard romped fast enough to go higher than that and never feels frustrating or that you’ve hit a brick wall. Having 15.5mph limit is so annoying! If the government has concerns about electric scooters, they should be captured by a separate law.

2- In the US, the majority of the EMTBS (hard tails) and E BIKES has class 1-2-3 (so can reach 28 mi/h) and a throttle now. The limit is 750W motors, in Canada 500 W; regardless of these "limitations", there are 1000+ watts motors everywhere). There are even more and more EMTBS hard tails mid drives with throttles.

the assisted speed that would satisfy most EMTB riders is completely dependant on the types of trail they ride. Personally I never found the existing 15.5 mph limit an issue except perhaps one trail I ride which has short ramp jumps but is mostly flat. The result is that it becomes difficult to achieve the right speed to take those jumps. Most of the trails I ride are downhill so gravity does the job of acheving the right speed. I also dont ride tarmac.

32kph/20mph is a perfect balance. Helps with trail access by keeping assisted speed reasonable, but keeps the flowy trails flowy. BTW, we have walk mode in the US, but it is a little too slow. Wish it could be a 1.5mph limit.

GMBN recently did a review of this scenes demographic, asking if it was an old man’s sport. The survey suggested that most people are aged between 30-60 years old. I’d suggest it’s because that age group can afford to buy the bikes. E-bikes are just even further out of reach from new blood coming into the scene.

I sold my last normal bike to put towards a second eMTB. Riding up hills just isn't fun. Now it is, with uphill flow.

I see a place for both . I ride a regular short travel trail bike and doing a decent loop 30odd miles gives me a great accomplishment. I also feel like I’ve earned a beer . I can see for trips away with bigger hills some sort of e-bike would be great 👍

It's 25kmph in Australia too, which is fine. But gravel bikes need more.

I have walk mode on my Levo in the US. Maybe it's different than what you're talking about? I hold down a button and the bike helps me push it.

I've ridden Di2 for years and have not had function issues based on the electronics...only trail damage that would destroy any derailleur has caused me issues.

Really don’t understand why people insist on calling them acoustic bikes. I get the connection to a non-electric guitar is an acoustic guitar, but it was named because it produces its own sound. Acoustics is about sound. So nothing to do with bikes.

Recently bought 2024 gen 4 Trek rail 9.8. I snapped the chain, meanwhile waiting i picked my 2022 gen 5 Slash 9.8 XT. It was horrible experience, after riding 2 months on rail. It was such an amazing experience that my nervous system does not recognize the manual bike. I loved my slash, and the weight felt amazing changing back. It felt like papper compared to rail. But feel of a ride, its not even a comparrision. Rail absolutely dominated ion fun factor. I dont see myself doing manual bike, other than straight up downhill. Pedalling on manual bike is horrible after ebike. It felt like the breaks are on Slash when pedalling and Slash is like top of the line bike.

My e-gravel bike (which can also turn into e-road with wheel swap) cuts of at 25 km/h and I'm usually pedalling at 30 km/h. At least the rule can be 35 km/h outside populated areas.

Shouldn't an e-mountain bike be useful for local daily trip duty? Shops, work, etc? I rode my bamboo cargo e-bike at 20-24 mph today to go to the bank and the hardware store. E-bikes should have modes for mixed use paths, bike paths, offroad, road. We don't restrict cars but we know they will go as fast as feels safe. So we're battling to slow cars using road diets, road narrowing, adding visual reminders (anything but speed limit signs) to make you want drive slower. E-bikes are massive solution to Climate Crisis, and I have better chance of an e-bike as car replacement, if you allow me to ride them fast when the road allows

Ngl got deore 10 speed on my jones LWB and it is solid af, never had an issue.

I'm just like Adam. I love my 140/130 Izzo, it's an awesome bike, but I don't ride it as it doesn't have a motor. However, I don't want the heavy full fat bikes. I love the lightweight 60NM assist bikes. I stil want something that feels like a regular bike but can give me that boost on hills or when flagging... As for the US market for Mondraker, there are still huge parts of the US that do not allow eMTB because of hard rules that classify eMTB as motorized (lumps them into the same category as motorbikes/ATVS) as opposed to bicycles and so are banned on many popular locations. That's why the analog market it still strong for Mondraker. eMTB is popular but a lot is ridden illegally, so stealth eMTBs, those with the Fazua Ride 60/TQ for instance, are popular as it is easier to ride in locations where the regulations are murky without drawing too much attention to yourself. Also, as an ex-resident of Boulder County, Boulder is historically anti-ebike and is very much in the pocket of angry hikers and environmentalists that hate mountain bikers to their death. There is no legal single track eMTB accessible trails anywhere in Boulder County. You have to go one county south to JeffCo for eMTB legal trails. Adam is wrong about walk mode in the US. I have it on my Orbea Rise which is class-1. Works fine.

As an admin for a fb ebike owners group I can honestly say that when the restriction subject comes up the majority of riders are just wanting to change to the 20mph us limit as there definitely is a frustrating limit on a lot of trails where 15mph just isn’t enough! Not something I would do myself though as I’m not willing to risk my warranty etc

I think we need a universal eBike speed, 20 mph. Rob is correct, 20 mph is perfect, I'm from the States and we do have walk mode here. my perfect travel is 180/180 170/170 range, we still have a lot of trails not open to Class1 eMTBs but we cont to work on it but we have made progress in many areas.

The big question for ebikes is if we will see the same trend as for electric cars, which is where system voltage creeps up and up because ultimate, the power (and importantly the specific power, ie the power per unit volume) goes up as voltage goes up. Today, iirc in saying all ebikes sit at under 60vdc so as to remain unconstrained by the various directives that cut in at around 60vdc, above which, a focus on electrical safety with regard to electric shock risk mitigation starts. However, pushing say from 48V to 82V would see the size of the motor drop by half approximately......

The daily Strava leaderboards for MTB where I ride are almost empty now, everyone's on E-MTBs now.

The 25 km/h limit here in Europe is too slow for commuting longer distances outside cities. Personally I would like to be able to go around 30-35 km/h when commuting on countryside roads. For mtb trails/dh and commuting in dense cities the 25 km/h is fine.

They are not dead. People ride mtb for more reasons than going downhill on a trail. @DoddyMTBtech is bang on.

I'm using my old specialised enduro 2014 for lunchtime exercise to loose some flabber and I love the " low weight".

You won't go back to a normal bike after riding an e-bike. I can imagine that would be heavy and not so fun. Maybe when I'm 60 years old I'll buy an e-bike. 20 years to go 💪🏼

Im in canada and the limit is 32kph. On most trail, i dont care, but some flowy jump trail needs pedaling past 32kph to clear the jump, and it is really annoying to hit the limiter. Ebikes have often less anti-squat and it makes them harder to pedal past the limiter, plus the drag of the motor.

I do not buy the "fitness" bs. I just rode 12 miles of single track on my emtb after work. My heart rate over the 2 hour ride averaged 145 bpm, and quite often was in the danger zone for me, a 61 year old man. How much bloody work do you want me to do? Pretty sure i am getting a fitness gain on my emtb.

On the point about the assistance limitations and cut off points, I donlt mind thr 15.5mph limit in the UK. If it could be made possible to not make it like trying to cycle through treacle when you are pedalling beyond the limiter/when it cuts off....would be prefreable.

Am the only one who sees that the industry is missing a BIG opportunity with the E-Mtb 'format'. Current E-Mtb marketing sales expects the same "sell a full bike to the biker every 2-3 years" ... Clearly this sales model is becoming increasingly problematic, especially in the more expensive E-Mtb portions of the market, effectively pricing lots of "curious to experiment, but shallow of pocket" types out of E-mtb market. My fantasy is for an E-Mtb format bike that you can just buy as a pedal bike to begin with no battery or engine just a bolt in "BB" and normal drive train, but then you can buy a gear box or a 65nm engine or 85nm, or a belt drive system, etc, etc. This way everyone who wants to can get into party can and we can experiment with different drive systems without it being a 5K+ investment, the industry gets a massive user base of owners buying fairly pricey major upgrades maybe 2-3 times over the life of a frame It could help to slow down the dev cycle of frames too, not force manufacturers to put new frames out every year just to maintain sales. Think it would lower burden of dev costs too by spreading dev cycles. over more financial Just think there is big opportunity thats not being explored yet with OBVIOUS modularity of E-mtb format frames.

Interesting how people say Trickstuff is insanely powerful. Most people would run the Direttissimas, those are at exactly at Shimano levels. The Maximas are actually really good, but super £££. The Trinitys were cheaper than the Direttissimas and they're amazing, insanely powerful. Managed to get 2 pairs🥴Didn't get along well with the Direttissimas.

What ebikers dont get is: No pain no gain. Its funny how physical strain is just looked down upon. The marathon example is very good. Imagine going to a marathon athlete and trying to convince him that he can go way further with a car... Thats just nonesense.

20mph/32kmh is where it’s at. My Dad has been riding an e-bike for 5 years and road bike for 40 years. At age 80 he asked if I could derestrict it. Speedbox FTW.

20 MPH is right speed, I can pedal my MTB that speed for prolonged period of time on the road. Also bikes could easily have uphill restriction based on gyro or accelerometer to i.e. 15 MHP to protect motor and battery life and people on trails. BTW modern accelerometer doesn't add much complexity and sensor cost like 3 euro.

32km here in New Zealand is mint feel sorry for the 25km guys

I would prefer a full power motor. A 500w/h battery with an optional range extender. 115 or 120 super progressive suspension. 120-130mm fork.

25k's an hour catches you out so often right on jump take offs. 35kph is a great compromise. And most of the time you not pedalling at that high speed so the battery drain is not really legit or a major difference worth worrying about.

Would be nice to see the screen you are all looking at while talking so we can see it as well? :)

I get the impression from watching lots of KZfaq vids of riders in the USA that they probably think they diont need Ebikes because there are so many uplifts & dont peddle up anything anyway & there seems to be more people riding downhill or park bikes than anything else , just the impression I get but could be completely wrong .

E-bikes haven’t caught on here in the US yet because they’re still treated like motor dirt bikes on public lands.

25kph is too slow, it is dangerous on the trail. Leaves us no choice but to derestrict. Are we going to restrict cars and motor bikes too. Why should my $10,000 bike not ride how I want it too.
