For the longest time, the label "Latin" has shone the spotlight on Spanish speakers of the western hemisphere. But if Spanish is not the only language derived from Latin, then how could Hispanics be the only Latinos? This, and more

The term Hispanic did not include Brazilians and French speaking peoples of the region. Latinos DOES include them however because a Latino include any Romance language culture to include speakers of Haitian Creole which is French based.

@djstackademikz8 ай бұрын
When Columbus got there he named the island Hispaniola (little Spain). The capital being Santo Domingo (Saint Dominick) whom the city was honored too. When the French arrived they fought the Spanish until they agreed for land on the West and named the capital Saint Domingue (which is also Saint Dominick in French) so that’s why you’ll also hear them say Saint Domingue for Haiti & Santo Domingo for DR. But Before Columbus got there the island was divided into 4 kingdoms. Haitians will tell you the original Taíno name of the entire island is Ayiti meaning high mountains in Taíno language. Dominicans will tell you the entire name of the island was Quisqeya or Bohio and the only western side of the island was named Ayiti because of the mountainous terrain on the west side. Regardless, in 1804 when the African slaves defeated the European armies they renamed the entire island Ayiti in remembrance of the Taíno people who were there over a million deep and by 1500 only 32,000 remained and by 1801 a census reported zero remaining Tainos on the island (but we all know many escaped and created maroon towns in the mountains along with escaped slaves). Then in 1822 the citizens of Santo Domingo went To war with the haitian army in efforts to secede as a separate state and in 1844 they won & became an independent nation known as the Dominican Republic. And there you have it haiti and dr.

Haitians are latino in the most liberal sense, the thing is “latino” means from Latin America not just a “latin derived language” BUT, that’s part of it, of course, lately it seems like some people are now extending that label to Haitians where in the past it seemed like that was only afforded to Mexico all the way down to Argentina and as well as the Caribbean latino countries, because it seems like it makes sense, especially if we considered Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Puerto Rico as latino, so why not considered Haitians latino, right? But the thing is many Latinos don’t think Haitians are latino because we’re just never thinking about it, so if you want to call yourself Latino, you can, sure, but if you explain it to a non-Haitian latino they’ll think you’re crazy, because many folks are still very conservative; and I want to add that this is a very American debate or conversation, natural born latinos don’t care about this, they’ll just tell you “I’m Mexican,” “I’m Guatamalan,” etc they don’t dwell on identity politics as much as American latinos do But more power to you, I’m glad to hear this dialogue, it’s nice to know you’re educated where many are not, so big ups to Haiti… the original Latin American country lowkey, if you know you know

Anyway, I guess the Haitians in Haiti, exactly like the Brazilians in Brazil, don't really care about this word "Latino" that has been created in a special context, the one of the racist and (at the time) segregated North-American society.
