There is only so many species within each genus of different succulent plants but many hybrids have been created, mostly by humans, by crossbreeding. Some of these hybrids can be hardier than their parents but others are not.
Hybridizing is a big business and often plants are crossed in order to create a specific look. It is not unusual that hardiness of these new succulents is pushed aside in favour of making them look a certain way.
In this video we will discuss hardiness of hybrids and try to ascertain whether and when they may be more resilient than species that grow naturally in the wild/ their parents.

What is the difference between getting a patent on a plant vs creating your own hybrid (in which you can name the plant) vs creating a cultivar?
@SucculentGrowingTips
@SucculentGrowingTips 19 күн бұрын
Every human made hybrid is also a cultivar (cultivated variety). If you manage to create your own and want to officially name it you'll have to make sure it's true to type and there are rules you need to adhere to (national and international) if you want it to be recognised as a new cultivar. You can also choose to patent it and have exclusive breeding rights. The process will be different based on where in the world you are- you'll have to find out what the rules are in your particular country. Hope this helps :) I also just made a video on the different terminology used around plant names which explain the difference between cultivar, hybrid etc. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZpuhnsiVupjSYGg.htmlsi=ALmsfa_hg12OQ7Mv

@@SucculentGrowingTips This is not meant necessarily for you but for viewers who are falling for these pseudo "new" hybrids, "rare" plants, who think tissue culture is a new method, for those getting scammed (imo), buying into the "rare" plant hype, Damn can we say plant "growers" gone wild? So many people/new companies naming and renaming plants & "hybrids" from pseudo new hybrids plants. All these new plant "breeders"/sellers and implying they're botanist is all craziness and an attempt to profit off of this plant trend befor the plant bubble bust. I cannot pin point which consumers are falling for these rare. new plants and paying high price for plants that 1) Plant hybrids and cultivars take a long time to create in research and establish stable hardy plants 2) A person/company simply crossing plants with hybrids, even more bogus hybrid with hybrid doesn't mean you created a new unstable or stable plant. Without the proper documentation research to show, it is not legit. And this sense of entitlement, in which "breeders" "growers" are naming old plants as if they created a new type of plant in the genus or species is freaking ridiculous but their scam is actually working because people are actually buying "rare' "new" plants is seed and tissue without knowing if they're are consuming a frankenstein plant that can potentially be weak and prone to fungal and viral diseases.

@@SucculentGrowingTips I thought so but know one with expertise has addressed the differences or similarities. I just hear growers mention cultivars and hybrids but I wasn't sure if the terminology is synonymous.

@@sonnyalvarado768 It kind of is and isn't- man made hybrid can always be called a cultivar but not every cultivar is a hybrid. For instance selectively bred lines that were a mutation rather than a result of hybridization are also cultivars. If hybridizations or mutations happen in nature spontaneously the terminology changes again. It's all explained in a bit more depth in yesterdays video. It's all a bit confusing as people use the terms interchangeably 😅

So are cultivars plants hybrids or not cultivated meaning they are tissue cultures?
