A Japanese neuroscientist criticized Japanese comedies as childish. Japanese comedies never treat social, political, and cultural issues but pretend foolish behaviors. I introduce aspects of Japanese comedies.

Interesting subject that I have never considered. Maybe the Japanese like pranks and simple humor because you have little chance of offending someone. Here in the US, humor can be somewhat brutal and people don't care too much if they are offensive. Also, humor in America is I believe more prized as a character attribute. I'm a freelance photographer (and I like when people make me laugh and I grew up in a family that prized humor) and making people laugh is a way to disarm people and to get the workday going smoothly. Of course if I am working with someone who seems serious, I adapt and keep humor at a low level. On a side note, for a few years I had a Japanese photo assistant (who was an excellent assistant and a great person) and I realize now that maybe his seriousness was more cultural than personal. It took ALOT of work to make Kan laugh...!

@@jimjimgl3I watch videos in which American comedians can sometimes be harsh. Japanese comedians are also often brutal, but their approach differs from that of Americans. Japanese comedies are less ironic but occasionally violent. Thank you for your comment!

I like stand up comedy from any country if there are subtitles. But I don't think I have ever seen a stand up comedian/comedienne from Japan. What I used to like was the Japanese show Endurance - that was really funny and Takeshi's castle.

@@Gilbertineable Takeshi is a well-known comedian in Japan and is also recognized as a filmmaker outside of Japan. Thank you!

@@yutakawithschizophrenia I didn't know that. Did you ever watch the TV show Endurance? They had to stop making it because some people said it was humiliating and cruel.

@@Gilbertineable Takeshi’s comedies used to be quite brutal. However, in recent years, due to compliance regulations, Japanese TV stations can no longer show Takeshi’s comedy as they used to. These days, he doesn't perform comedy but instead manages regular conversation. I haven't watched "Endurance," probably because the program aired decades ago.

@@yutakawithschizophrenia I don't think it was actually on UK TV but this TV show used to show lots of clips of it. So, I think Endurance was made in the 90's. I used to watch the programme/show just to see the Endurance clips which I really found hilarious but I would not find it funny anymore. There are and have been sadistic reality shows in the UK and the USA for peoples' amusement. I like obervational humour the best. My twin sister did a stand-up comedy course and at the end she did what they call an 'open mic' session where she did her comedy routine for 5 minutes. She said she got a lot of praise. She could not do it as a career though as she had a young child at the time.

@@Gilbertineable It sounds great your sister is. I imagine that stand-up comedy requires a lot of energy. Sometimes, I make people laugh by my jokes, but if failing to do so, I feel a little bit uncomfortable. Humor is crucial to relationships. Thank you for your comments!

British humor, American humor, Chinese humor, Japanese humor are all different. I showed an Australian girl and her mom the British comedy "Hot Fuzz" and her mom loved it (she was born in the UK) but the daughter didn't (her daughter was born in Australia). I lived in Japan and a lot of Gaijin liked the Japanese comedy but I didn't enjoy it until probably a year after arriving. It needed some adapting to.

@@lotharlights The preference for comedies is diverse. I enjoy watching videos where Americans, Australians, and British encounter Japanese comedies. Some feel uncomfortable with the Japanese style of humor, while others really enjoy it. There are probably several reasons for this diversity, not only the "cultural context" I mentioned in my video. I have a joke for you: One Sunday, a priest was giving a homily on the evils of alcohol. To strengthen his key points, he filled a glass of whiskey into which he dropped a wiggling worm. The worm quickly stopped moving and died. The priest asked those attending the mass, "What did you learn from this demonstration?" Paddy answered, "I learned that if you drink whisky, you will not have worms." 😁😄🤨
