Well, English is currently the international language (thank to the US), so most people who are educated, at least speak some English. Some people say this would eventually be replace with Chinese, but I don't think so. China, might once been the most powerful country for 2000 years, but with the Communist in charge, it is unlikely they can surpass the US and even with the Communist gone, during their 70 years rule, they have pretty much destroy all aspect of Chinese culture ideology that help make this country once so powerful, as an attempt to secure their power. So, na, I don't see China replacing the US any time soon.

Lol.. I'm pretty sure that's true for many people in other countries too.. Actually lots of Japanese only know Japanese as well. I think it's a more recent trend that people are learning English for practicality of it being one of, if not the, most widespread language. Same for Spanish. Other languages tend to be more specific and only needed if you plan on going to a certain place like Japan or Germany, etc.. But this too is getting less necessary for native English speakers to learn because many of the natives there will know basic English as well.

Yukio Schiffer That's not unreasonable, but it's not so much that I'm surprised that they have a second language. Like Austrians sometimes have a 4th, and 5th language. It's that the common knowledge that English is the common language of advanced nations is probably actually true. Apparently it's especially true of western countries. Unless they just couldn't find the people who couldn't speak English though I think that's highly unlikely.

I'm from Holland and next to our own language I also learned French, German, English and a bit of Latin at school. At some point you can choose if you want to continue with French or German and if you want to keep doing Latin. English is a language we all have to learn no matter what you choose for education.

spacedoohicky it's more that people who are likely to travel leared English by travelling. If you actually go to countryside in europe most people speak a very limited English
@tezer2d7 жыл бұрын
I'm from germany and in theory everybody learns english in school, you can even learn french, Latin and Spanish at most schools if you want to. In practise YT is a better teacher than school and most people forget some or all the english they know (mostly working class people), only smart people train there english skills by watching english movies, YT, comedy shows or even by travelling to a foreign country. So no, we dont learn english because we are so close to each other instead we learn it because it's the most important language. People who live at germanys borders may probably know the language from the other country, so for example someone living next to the Netherlands may speak dutch. But most germans only speak native german and a bit broken english because they never use it. Btw Cute12Beauty that sentence is correct but way to formal. I guess I would go for "Ich bin Amerikaner und (ich) kann kaum Deutsch." just my 2cts your sentence would work too

When I came back from the last day of comiket this year and walked onto the main strip of akiba to go towards my room, I found a couple of foreigners asking Japanese people something in a panic. Figuring the trouble in communication they were experiencing to be on the Japanese's lack of assertiveness when it comes to speaking English, I stepped in to try to help them, or at least translate their English into my broken Japanese so the people around could help them. Surprise surprise, they were French and couldn't speak a word of English, and the Japanese person they were talking to could speak English just fine. I ended up having to use my high-school level French to try to tell them that the "comic market" their daughter wanted to go to was in an entirely different part of the city, and that it had just closed.

No. Not in Finland but it's norm that you do have it (cause you need to have one non Finnish/Swedish long language). Tho I don't know about the same people how they have their thingy. Also in France you can have Italian/Spanish/German as "long" language. And so one. And don't forget Switzerland.

I'm African, and it really annoys me when Africans say "I'm from Africa" when you ask them where they are from like the man 7:23 because they think people won't know the country. I'm from Algeria, Africa and I always mention my country even if it's not popular, because I love introducing it to others
@ChristBuilt901x8 жыл бұрын
Its probably due to the fact that when people normally ask him where he is from, he says the name of the country and because they are in Japan, they often wouldn't know what or even where that country is. So he probably just says Africa for ease sake, then he might specify the country he is from if they inquire further.
@scoshi65928 жыл бұрын
ChristBuilt901x Yeah, I understand that, but it's better if he mentions the country so people will ask about it if they don't know it. That's how you get people to know about your country

Japanese people that want to communicate with foreigners, likely English learners, will opt for the most likely common language. This videos certainly shows why they feel English is their best bet. Sure it can be annoying as a student of Japanese, or somebody who's been in the country a while, but certainly in big cities most people will be presumed to be just tourists, understandably considering the relatively small foreign population. Either embrace it or politely decline. Don't be too hard on people. As language learners i'm sure many of us appreciate how difficult it can be learning a foreign language whilst in your own country. I've always admired the confidence of people who approach me just to say hello and test out a few of their English phrases (Provided i'm not in rush :P) I came to Japan to improve my Japanese, and the Japanese people helped me with that everyday, unknowingly or not! I certainly don't mind returning the favour every now and again.

Except literally no one hears that someone is American and is confused about what country they are referring to to. The only people who make a big deal about using the word American to refer to people from the US are Latin Americans who are convinced that the US is being exclusionary in using that language, in my experience. Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine. Americans will continue to call themselves what they and the rest of the non-LatAm world have always called them, Americans, and this "tip" of yours is not actually meant to be helpful, but likely was just posted to further your own agenda.
@luxtenax91758 жыл бұрын
GrimL0gic Not really, because when someone says they are from America, everybody can understand they mean the US, specially in Japan (In Japan, everybody knows the US as 'America'). >"Saying you are from America in many parts of the world is equivalent to a French man saying his nationality is Europe." This analogy is reductive, ridiculous and simply not true. A more appropriate analogy would be like when people from England call themselves "British" even though Great Britain is the name of the island, not the name of a country or political territory. EmmaMexi Art As a Latin-American myself, I completely agree with what you said.

It's cringeworthy because Yuta actually understands English and she hesitated by speaking Japanese? Just a thought.
@amythelime8 жыл бұрын
***** That doesn't make any sense. He approached her with English, so she obviously already knows that he speaks English. It seemed rather appropriate that in Japan she would speak Japanese to a Japanese speaking person who she knows makes videos about Japanese culture. There's nothing cringe about it. The OP is just an idiot.

Just discovered this channel. Love it! I haven't been to Japan since i was an exchange student in 2007. I'm too broke to go back :( but I love seeing videos of Japan and the people... even if this one is mostly tourists.
