So this video about kerosene heaters is a bit more in-depth then my first one. I'll be using my Dura Heat DH 2304 heater for this video. I'm talking all about the safety of not only the heaters themselves but the fuel as well. Ill tell you how to fill it, how to lite it, and some tips on how to be safe and avoid the kerosene smell. Have no fear but remember to read and understand your models specific instructions and follow all safety guidelines. Never run with your kerosene heater. Kerosene heaters should not be used inside cars or boats, or phone booths if you can find one. Always set your heater on level ground and never on a pitched roof. Throwing a lit kerosene heater is never a good idea. consult your doctor if you have any shortness of breath or blood in you urine or tears. Kids ask your parents for permission first, parents do not give your kids permission. No for use with all sets, some restriction apply. no valid in Texas or Nevada, void where prohibited

Wisconsin 1992 Power out below 0 for 20 days fuel oil gone generator done. we relied on a kerosene heater it kept a 3 bedroom farm house warm. we used it to cook off the top. A great piece of survive equipment, a good investment.!!

In northeastern WI with no wood stove, I have an assortment of other kinds of portable heaters: electric, natural gas, propane, and kerosene. If one fails, there's always a backup.

12:49 You may be right, but last year during the Valentine’s deep freeze in Texas, I was burning a Perfection 730 heater for several hours with no trouble. I had no electricity so it was an important heat source. I set it in the hallway and left to go to my mother-in-law’s. At my car, I realized I’d forgotten something so I walked back in the house to hear my smoke detector beeping. I went in the hallway and my kerosene heater had an orange flame billowing out of the top vents and black smoke filling the house. I was able to quickly shut it off and take it outside. I don’t know why the heater did that, what was done differently, what I’d done wrong, or what changed-but if I hadn’t walked back in and checked, I could have burnt our house down. So you’re probably right, but it does seem possible for a kerosene heater to function normally for a couple hours then somehow flare up.

You gotta take the top off and fix the wick inside it’s burning off center. I always check outside first since having this trouble myself

@@josematy3249 you can kinda pull on the wick a little but once it goes up and down its going to sit where it wants. It has 2 pins that locate it

Soot and smoke can occur if you overfill the tank with kerosene. If this occurs, turn it off and siphon out about a quart or so of kerosene, until the needle is below the full level.

@@metals_etched I had that problem on another one. something hit the dial and bent it slightly. i think that is unsafe and should be fixed. wouldn't it not shut off if it got tipped?

I've been in situations where I have had to use them as whole house or apartment heat.Not the best way to live but had no choice but them things saved me from freezing as well as the pipes otherwise my places wouldn't have been livable

On these kerosene heaters it is not possible to install the wick to high or low as the wick has pins on it that go into holes in the wick holder. Now it is possible to install the wick upside down.

Not good info dude. First, don't use funnels to fill your heater. Second never use pink kerosene always use clear kerosene, it burns cleaner and is meant for indoor use.

good job, moved from CA to wyoming with -15 F temps common in garage so lookin into space heater use in residential setting to heat workshop in attached garage.. That model appears to be close to what's avail. locally. Question; are there any venting needs for these? Or do they burn efficiently enough to minimize co levels? thanks

These wicks are fiberglass at the top and the reminder, cotton. The fiberglass will handle dry and high temperature burns just fine. Contaminants in the fuel will impede the capilary action, especially water. Carbon will form over time on the fiberglass upper portion of the wick from combustion deposits, an occasional 3~5 tank dry burn will pretty much take care of this. Preferably, the top of the wick wont feel crusty and hard like a wire brush, this can impede the wicking action. If so, try a dry burn along with an old toothbrush to sweep the tarballs off.

i have one and it uses way to much fuel ,it heats good but the cost is high .the red is for the clear lamps for looks , should be as clear as water .

I'm not a big fan of their tip over solution. One thing that would help would be something to make the wick retract more slowly if the shut off lever is pushed instead of snapping it down. Mine makes a puff of black smoke unless I lower the wick more slowly.

Mine works fine except that after the 5 to 10 min start up burn period I am having trouble adjusting the wick to the correct operation height. The adjusting know seems to bottom out prior to getting the wick low enough. The heater therefor burns "hotter" than I want it to. Other than that the heater works great and heats up approximately 800 square feet in no time. As long as I turn it off outside there is no odor. Lighting it inside in my experience has not been a problem with odor. Not sure why. Thanks

I might have replied to you about this problem in another video, but if not here's what you do. When you want to lower the wick beyond the lowest setting of the adjustment, grab and hold onto the adjuster knob and press the shutdown lever. The wick ratchet mechanism will drop the wick a few notches but not enough to extinguish it. Release the shutdown lever and you can now readjust the wick for the correct flame height.

I had the same problem on another machine. i just opened the window. when i changed the wick the problem was solved. i guess you could trim the wick but i am not 100% sure

Different kinds. Your own heater will have a specific kind it uses. 1-k for my own.

Get 'K-1' grade ... clear as water and very little smell and residue on the wick. Same as for lamps.

Interesting, a lot of people say not to use colored Kerosene. It's not as clean as clear. Thoughts?

It won't burn as well as clear and it will cause your wick to harden from dye deposits and make it hard to light.Just don't use red use clear 1 K kero only

I have a small insulated garage, I have been using tank top propane heaters for the past couple years. I have noticed they add moisture to the air and my tools are starting to get surface rust on them. I was planning on putting a ham radio station in the garage and need to come up with a better heating solution. Will the kerosene heaters add moisture to the air as well?

From the chemistry of it, I'd guess yes some moisture , but not as much. Everything made from oil is some combination of hydrogen and carbon. When they burn the hydrogen becomes water and the carbon becomes cabon dioxide (if it burns cleanly). But propane has a higher ratio of hydrogen to carbon then kerosene has. So both will make water. But I think propane will make more.

@@davidbrennan5 - The heater type shown here _will_ add moisture to the air because these heaters are UNVENTED: all the exhaust gases are released into the heated space along with the heat. Keep in mind that you are burning a hydrocarbon. The exhaust products are, assuming proper combustion, carbon dioxide and water vapor. This is true of any heater that uses a hydrocarbon fuel, whether kerosene, propane, or natural gas. The only way to avoid the moisture problem with these fuels is to get a VENTED heater or furnace, which dumps the water vapor and other exhaust products outside but keeps most of the heat inside. Your thought of finding a mobile home furnace is a good one. You might also want to check out kerosene heaters made by a company called Monitor. These are vented heaters which are permanently installed and use fuel from a separate tank and will give you the dry heat that you are looking for.

If you have a cotton wick you don't want to let it burn out as it will burn your wick off the amount it is raised and unless you want to buy a wick once a week I would not recommend it! However if you are using a fiberglass wick it would be fine as it does clean a fiberglass wick if you are using it in an open area...otherwise I do not recommend it since the CO2 may be an issue in the burn off!

😪There was a Old Man that I knew that called the Police because the flame🔥was to high and he did not know what to do, heater was New to him. This Cop showed up and tried to push the kerosene heater with a broom to get it outside of this mans garage. The Cop knocked it over and caught the mans garage and home on fire. 🔥🔥Total loss. True story ! 😪

yeah these modern kero heaters are kinda dumb proof. at the highest setting ya might get a little soot and at the lowest it just stinks a little bit. Love the darn things.

@joeseif my big one is a dynaglow sucks alot of fuel though. I have a smaller convection with a glass chimney by dynaglow as well. Its nice real bright and only 10000 btu. Will keep you comfortable for over 12 hours per gallon. Then i got a radient one from tractor supply some rebrand of a senku that has a stainless radiater in it. Its really neat. Has a removable fuel tank. Its great but it gurgles a few times an hour

Don't listen to this guy. First, don't use a funnel to fill your kerosene heater. Always use a siphon. Second, don't use the pink colored kerosene like this guy is using. It is not meant for kerosene heaters and it will stink your house up and put unnecessary fumes in your house. Always use clear kerosene for indoor kerosene heaters. Don't listen to this guy. He's guessing.

my parents have used diesel in our kerosene heater forever at the cabin works the very best.. new diesel isnt like the 70s where it was barely refined. save yourself some money and try diesel

Well do you if diesel emits the same exact fumes? Are they maybe less good for you to breath because diesel is less refined? Why doesn't the manufacturer recommend diesel?

A lot of them do support diesel now especially winter blends because of the additives make them thinner similar to kerosene. I know for a fact it does not emit any smell because we’ve had to use it a few times this year in the house due to some longer than expected power outages.
