I've been teaching technology to adults for almost 15 years and Michael is spot on. When it comes to actually thinking about the subject (which is required to diagnose problems) most choose to avoid the effort and rely on someone else to do the thinking for them. They may be skilled at disassembly and reassembly, but if they are asked to find and solve a problem...blank stares and hesitation. I believe this is a habit they develop early in life and is one that few can muster the effort to change. This culture supports non-thinking and conformity; very few young people encounter unique people or situations that shake them out of their complacency. They go through life never reaching their full potential as a thinking animal.

nevertheless, human predators grow from having been children. their behavior is the result of maladaptive "parts". there is still a shred of the relationship to a good model or the "adult self" in a person who has perhaps even the most maladaptive parts. their behavior is exactly how a child in an extreme circumstance behaves when trying to survive. so as much as it's a truth that people discard the teaching most important to themselves, it is probably true that if any of us cared enough to give that teaching to a student via "relational support" and actual therapeutic and properly skilled effort, guiding that person by shrouding the full extent instead of dumping cold reality on them, this world would look very different. we all point the finger when we feel insecure and dont know how to process it - even Malice!

Look at popular culture. Why do you think shows like the Kardashians and 50 sports channels exist? Why do you think you have historical discrimination of any minority and anybody that it's different leading to things like racism and slavery in all cultures all over the world? Women abuse in all it's forms? Why can't you walk down the street at night safely? You can get a pretty good idea what people think and feel by looking at all of that.

@@RaulGarcia-ps9ri you don't have to lack intelligence (whatever that truly is) to enjoy a show understanding that it's capitalizing on the emotional spikes on superficial drama (am I lacking intelligence when my behavior isn't associated with the image your brain comes up with when you think of "smart"?), you can enjoy sports while being "intelligent" enough to understand that it's a ritualistic simulation of warfare and been used in various forms as play for centuries, all great civilizations can be found to have been built on the scaffolding of slavery (and some of the greatest ancient philosophers' popular thoughts bred in their time in slavery which then was probably perceived as low intelligence population), the rules around the treatment of women have been moderated by people who seem not to lack intelligence (yet maybe their beliefs differ from yours) as they triumph over the masses in their respective societies to reach political power through social coercion. And what is it that people feel and think by "looking" at "that"? All i can see is that we're animals of habit and reward habituation, and people who have more of this so called "intelligence" don't escape the pulls of genetically driven reward dependent behavior... they just achieve what rewards them more quickly and with less effort

There’s flaws and values in both attitudes. Lex’s attitude is what may get him hurt or disappointed by other people, due to his expectations, but it also makes him more humble and open-minded. I've been deeply wrestling with this topic for almost three years now. It's been extremely difficult to acknowledge that there's a large swath of the population that is in a sort of dissociative state, lacking personal thought. I've imagined it to be how they're raised, but it's honestly still an enigma to me. Coming to this conclusion is not a result of cynicism, it's based on objective reality for my life. But I never assume someone is this way or that, until they make it evident.

Every human being has value by virtue of having been created by God (sorry, atheists, but your efforts at deriving equal value for all are in vain, and you'll only ever end up at either commie or nazi). But that said, we should still acknowledge that in no other way are humans equal. Man isn't even equal to himself from moment to moment. And low-performers should get what they deserve. As should the criminally-inclined. Is it fair that many people are forever doomed to suck? No. But life isn't fair. That's where Christian charity comes in to fill the gaps - within reason. You've gotta cut people off the instant your charity is facilitating poor behavior. Poverty is never just lack of material needs; it always goes hand-in-hand with personal deficiencies.

I sit in between them on this one. Solo Logical people know the Universe is the same because without the infinite finite concept of dumb you couldn't first really believe in smart and without the infinite finite concept of smart you couldn't first really believe in dumb. Infinite reality is, smart is dumb and dumb is smart but infinite illusion is, dumb isn't smart or smart isn't dumb. Intelligence is the infinite reality of sameness and the infinite illusion of difference, otherwise how could you really believe you were either smarter or dumber than yourself or someone else without infinite objectivity(same) and infinite subjectivity(different). To be existence is to become existence and to become existence is to be existence which is infinite reality and/or or/and to be existence isn't to become existence or to become existence isn't to be existence which is infinite illusion. Replace all concepts with the one concept of existence and you see through the illusion but you also realize without the illusion of different concepts you couldn't be the reality of one concept, it's called eternal recurrence.

What does one define as thinking deeply ? I can reflect on my own inner workings and ideologies of what I think and perceive as the universe. I wouldn’t say I’m well educated but I feel as if my trials and tribulations have put me in a certain area that many people have yet to get to. The mind is a powerful and amazing thing that we have yet to conquer. I have had a few powerful experiences with psychedelics that have really opened up my thoughts and how I effectively think deeply.

I'm someone who really puts a lot of effort in thinking about stuff that I actually think about. So, I'm a really deep thinker always searching for the deeper meaning of things. And it absolutely disturbs me to see a person with an actual brain, but yet not use it "and not care". You don't have to be smart. I'm not smart either. Just use "whatever" you have in you're head.

"Thinking deeply" is a too wide and vague concept. People might assume that "thinking deeply" is about questions like "the meaning of life", or they can assume it's about "how gravity interacts with particles". Both completely distinct from one another and both can involve "deep thinking". We must assume all people can think deeply about any subject they like, feel attracted by or need to solve. One can think deeply about a "relationship" and what they need to "save their marriage", if that is what they have to do in a certain period of their lives. Anyway, we need to define what we mean by "thinking deeply". And, even more important, after "thinking deeply" we have to get some knowledge out of it, some kind of solution to the problem we are facing. Other wise "Thinking deeply" is only a mental game.

Interesting question, at a first glance I assume that you should ask about the underlying meaning of things beyond the main topic. If a take a random topic such as the current climate of division in America, the basic level will be to parrot some form of common replay such as "its the media, or the Russians, or the PC culture,etc.". Thinking deep about it will be first to question if this assertion is true, I could argue that such division has always existed and it's nothing new, another level will be to analyze the historical roots of it and another level will be to analyze how much it's rooted in human nature itself (our inclination to form tribes and compete for status and domination). I assume that you can be trained or train yourself be forcing you to follow a practice of self interrogation along the lines described above.

Raúl García Great comment...Question why you think and feel the way you do. Question why, almost to a point of being a little ridiculous, but there must be some sort of intelligence there to not get stuck in an infinite loop like the way a 2 year old asks why. If you can break things down, as you mention in the beginning of your comment, I agree that one can be taught as well. I do think that basically anyone can be a deep thinker, but I also think, that not everyone should think deeply. It can come with a sort of bleakness that one may not have felt before the practice, especially when dealing with things such as religion, the meaning of life, etc.

I can see the point he is trying to make, but I could not disagree more. I, in many instances, have been the person dumbfounded when someone would hand me $11 on a $6 bill. Hell, somedays, I am still that person. But when I was that person every day, I was living in a horribly stressful environment. My goal was to be checked out as much as possible. I passively escaped the loop of poverty seemingly on accident. After I moved out of an emotionally abusive house, graduated with an associate degree, my world opened up. I had time to pursue bettering myself because I wasn't living in total fear or working two full-time jobs to survive in school while out on my own. I am by no means a perfect human, and I say this to prove a point, not to brag. My accomplishments are small and the situation I grew up in was mild compared to what some others face. But the momentum each accomplishment brings pulls me furth from the lifestyle of passivity. Not to say he isn't smart, but for him to say "compassion requires a baseline of intelligence" and not understand what I just explained was a little disappointing to hear.

I think everyone (with a few exceptions of psychopaths etc) is capable of true empathy but is too selfish or lazy etc etc. Some other emotion takes over and overpowers it, probably out of laziness, because it’s a lot easier to be hateful or resentful etc. But I think almost all people are capable. Some people just aren’t mature enough and are too weak. But could feel true empathy given the right circumstances and attitude to life

There is some truth to Michaels argument but I disagree on some points. He mentioned how some cashiers can't do math in their heads and uses that to discredit their intelligence. I can tell you this, I know some people who struggle with basic math but they are also some of the best mechanics or artists I know. There are many different varieties/degrees of intelligence. To write someone off because they can't have an intellectual discussion on a subject is arrogant if you ask me.

The reality is I am fucking stupid, but I must be optimistic in some sense or I'll just fucking kill myself, no one knows how badly this hurts me, everyone I've ever known finds these things so easy so natural that I can't even comprehend. When I get so lost on things others find simple I just want to cry. I just ask my self, Why was I born this way? I don't say this because I'm trying to be insensitive, but things that we do not have control over should not be worried about. Striving to try your best (as cliche as that sounds) in all of your endeavors, and aiming to be a virtuous person is of utmost importance, as it is something entirely within our control. Hopefully this message helps you in someway, I really do believe that you can be happy with what you will have achieve regardless of whatever limitation you face.

@@Joeyppeterscorp Hi Joey, I will say a prayer for you. It sounds like what you're dealing with is really difficult. We can't change who we are born to or when we are born. I think all we can do is the best we can with the time that we have. I have many weaknesses also. I'm slow sometimes and have a tendency towards neuroticism. I feel like all I can do is the best I can with the body/mind that I have. When I think about that it becomes a little bit easier for me to tolerate my lot in life. That's just me though.

The point is that you questioned why someone gave you 11 dollars. Others don't, won't or can't question why and learn from it. Other cashiers will have been working the job for years and still say things like "I hate when people give me the extra money, I have to void the transaction" etc. They lack the critical thinking to realise it doesn't matter whether you input 10 dollars or 11 dollars into the register. As long as you give the correct amount of change, the total will always be 6 dollars up.

I tend to think most people can think deeply especially if they start asking questions at a younger age. Now I understand the temptation to write those that don’t off. Like when im working customer service there is this temptation to just look at the person that’s screaming at me because prices went up and think “that person has no capacity for rational thought and their opinion is worth no more to me than the cow that was made into the burger im selling” but there are a few points to that. First i do care about the cow more than the customer generally and am trying to get away from mammal products. Second, perhaps that person has just never had to engage rationally and is just ruled by this primal part of their mind and through compassion and reason i can help liberate and uplift the rational human being stuck under there helping us both. Third, there is a practical part. Sure, if that customer goes off and attacks me and i do something like shoot them I’ll probably be fine because it’s in the self defense laws of my state. But, if there is a whole society of them then it doesn’t matter how right or wrong i am they will win. Even if just 10% of people where to be worth listening to you should still try to convince the 90% because they do have power and without them you’ll never achieve goals of improving human life.

Dale Carnegie said that, in general, people evaluate others according to 4 criteria: 1) Their appearances, the way they present themselves; 2) What they say; 3) The way they say it; 4) Facts, what they do. So, 3 out of 4 criteria are only about appearances, not about deep thinking. Sometimes people can be what they seem to be, sometimes they can be so charming and give you a lot of bullshit in a beautiful way. I made the mistake of looking for the good in everyone, but it's better to be realistic.

Both attitudes are a story you tell yourself about human behaviour. Whatever story you believe, your brain will find ways to get you to notice evidence in support of it and find ways to make you tune out the counterexamples. The alternative to both is to just be agnostic about it and not worry about it. I’m not saying Michael’s philosophy is dangerous or anything, I understand he isn’t some power-obsessive. I’m just saying an agnostic attitude might be easier on one’s mental health, since their brain isn’t constantly making them notice apparent stupidity in daily life.

Michael's point doesn't explain why so many supposedly high IQ individuals have the same difficulty in confronting hard ideas that contradict their lived experience. And a person confronted with a math problem, even though simple, might have an emotional reaction to it, it doesn't mean they can't do the math, just that their brain has equated math with something to be avoided, if Michael was confronted with a situation where he had to drive and not knowing how to drive he probably would have the same moment of panic that the hypothetical cashier would.

Being stupid is a matter of perspective, while they may appear stupid politically, or even well read, they may be a genius when spot welding and firing a 105 MM howitzer under extremely stressful combat situations. It all goes back to that nature vs nurture argument with basic psychology. Being an open or empathetic person has many drawbacks in social circles when all they care about is social media, or keeping up with the Jones rather than being innovative or creative for example. This all being said, there are rare artillery officers in the military now in nearly every nationality that are extremely well read, not socially awkward and also innovative niche small business owners. The real question that should be asked about deep thought is, why aren't we rewarding it socio-economically?

My thought on the matter is that everyone has the capacity for deep thinking neurologically, and I see others as having innate value and worth as living human beings with thoughts, emotions, hopes, and fears, so therefore I realize they deserve respect so therefore I do so. As for 90% of people, though, I see that in terms of the value that they put out in thinking deeply and carefully and using emotional intellegence and respect for others, I have very low expectations for most people, as almost every person I've encountered has proven to be thoughtless, apathetic, insensitive, and with much lower intellegence levels. It brings me much indignation when others don't think, and I can clearly see their choices make no logical sense, which is amazing. Jesus was amazed at people's stupidity, so I'm in good company. I liked the analogy Lex used about bulls, because most people definitely are like that. As Jesus said "Cast not your pearls to swine, and give not that which is holy unto the dogs (or bulls), lest they turn and trample you underfoot." Thanks so much for this video!
