I love my old film cameras. I love the variety and the unique shooting experience I get from my various rangefinder and SLR cameras. Which one takes better photos? Which type is better suited for street photography? Are modern mirrorless cameras similar to rangefinder cameras? This is my first video explaining the basic differences between rangefinders and SLRs, as well as the benefits of modern mirrorless cameras.

Back when events were the norm, I shot everything on dual M10s. I loved that their finders didn't go dark, or get choppy when shooting low light dances and wine meet and greets, but they are not for action, and the M10 lacks features such as shutter speed lock, which means that it is possible to nudge it into an exposure too fast or too slow for flash photography when shooting in a fast-paced environment.

As I've spent time shooting A LOT of different cameras over the course of my 30+ years of experience, I've learned that I tend to enjoy the experience of shooting an SLRs more than Rangefinders. A huge part of this surrounds my personal shooting style and the way that I view lines & shapes while shooting. This leads me to prefer the precision that comes along with shooting the Nikon vs. the estimations of how the image will look through an M6. Simply put, with an SLR, what you see is what you get.

In my film only days, I primarily used Nikon 35mm film SLRs with 35/85/180mm lenses. However, I also had a lens inventory that ranged in focal lengths from 14mm to 1000mm. I also shot with a Leica M6 35mm film rangefinder with 21/35/90mm lenses. For medium format film, I shot an RB67 SLR with 50/90/180mm lenses. However, my lens inventory ranged in focal lengths from 50mm to 250mm. I also shot with Fuji medium format film rangefinders with 65 and 90mm lenses. In the digital age, I am able to use my inventory of Nikon 35mm SLR film lenses on my digital SLR bodies. I am also able to use my inventory of Leica M6 35mm rangefinder lenses on my Leica M10 digital rangefinder body. I am also able to use my inventory of Leica M6 35mm rangefinder lenses and my inventory of Nikon 35mm film SLR lenses on my Fuji mirrorless digital cameras.

Like you I have a bit of everything plus I still use a DSLR (for paid work). For street I bounce back and forth between SLR and RF since I like both. I started long ago with SLR's which is great for close focusing and portraits but the ergonomics and the quiet shutter and ease of zone focusing on RF's is really satisfying as well. So, I guess I live in both worlds...:)

Same same. For some things I still use my Minlta A-mount and MD mount lenses. I have specialty lenses (80-200mm f/2.8, macro bellows) and some things like macro works awesome on SLRs and DSLRs. But for personal work, I rarely use an SLR, unless it's a compact manual focus body like my Minolta XD

One key difference that I would mention is that aside from the camera bodies themselves, rangefinder lenses are typically much smaller than their SLR equivalents. On a side note, it's not really surprising that at one point Leica chose to team up with Minolta. They were very innovative and made some great cameras. In addition to my M6, I own a CLE and an XD11 (which was one of the quieter SLR's in operation).

For wedding and professional work I use a canon R5. It’s a little smaller than a DSLR and it’s a work horse. Super reliable and shooting mirrorless has made my life a little easier. For fun and personal work I love using a rangefinder. The cameras I use the most is a Mamiya 7 and a Fuji X100v. It’s light enough to bring both on a hike and to travel with. I definitely prefer the rangefinder type of cameras despite some of its drawbacks.

Big fan of this comprehensive video, T. Definitely going to share this with my niece who is just getting started in photography. Perfect execution, an engaging format that offers an easy to understand teaching perspective. Can you make a similarly comprehensive video for beginners about the exposure triangle (on both film and video). Finding it really difficult to send a video that covers a beginner's perspective on the subject that covers nuances like ASA being the predecessor to ISO, stuff like that. After rewatching some old tutorials across photography KZfaq trying to find the right video to send, personally I found Tony and Chelsea are okay for digital beginners, not so much for people starting out in both film and digital. Anyway, I just think the easy access clear descriptions and explanations such as the ones in this video are kinda lost in a sea of half information...

Right now i shoot with the fuji xe1 because its what i could afford while its a huge step up in ability, size, and weight. Plus fuji has the lenses id like to use. With my dslrs because of the size I needed a big messenger bag but I can pack my whole fuji kit in a small samsonite camera bag with room for 2 cameras, flash, and extra lenses. Its actually been really great. I did happen to get several old cameras from family though with the oddest being a kodak vigilant six 20. I cleaned the optics and fixed the shutter now its ready to take pictures. The problem is I get max 8 photos per roll of 120 film. Its also got this weird system where its all fully manual but you have to really know what you are doing to get good photos since its not even close to rangefinder or slr but I definitely don't have a clue just yet.

Going from DSLR to mirrorless is definitely a great move to save on size and weight. Many of my big camera bags I bought specifically for DSLRs are no longer needed. The X-E1 is the first Fujifilm X Series camera I reviewed and it’s fantastic. As for shooting 120, it can be painful but rewarding when you get the shot! Keep it up!!

I love rangefinder. The reason I still shoot film is because there's no digital camera currently in the market offers rangefinder focusing...except Leica and Pixii, both are very expensive. If Fujifilm can figure out how to put a rangefinder focusing mechanism inside X-Pro body I would retire my Leicas. It doesn't have to be mechanical tbh, they can make it digital too (don't ask me how) as long as the focusing is still the same as rangefinder focusing...It's just something you can't replace with, not focus peaking, not split focusing, not zoom to focus..Focusing with rangefinder is so much fun, fast and accurate. And I'm right with you, aesthetically...rangefinder cameras are far better looking in my opinion.
@bigheadtaco

I'd love for Fujifilm to make a true rangefinder window focusing system to work with their cameras, but it will still be focus-by-wire and not a true mechanically coupled lens. Fujifilm has made it clear they have no interest in making manual focus lenses for their X Series cameras, although I think they might consider it for the GFX series with specialty lenses. Saying that, I'm currently okay with Fujifilm's hybrid approach to rangefinders in the digital realm, and if I really want to shoot with a rangefinder, I have my beautiful M7 and CLE :-) Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@ufukkiblat
@ufukkiblat 3 жыл бұрын
@@bigheadtaco This is something that I don't really get until now. It's been almost a decade since rangefinder camera were invented but why are we still relying on coupled rangefinder which can be unreliable over time. Fuji can make an electronic contact that move the rangefinder miror based on the information from the lens. With this we don't need to create a dedicated coupled lens. Or like I said before, they can make a "rangefinder focusing" simulation just like how they did it with split focusing assit. Sure you have your film options for rangefinder but how about digital option? your only option is to buy Leica or Pixii or buy old Epson camera.

Nice selection of gear on the table. One reason to use a (mainly) mechanical SLR or RF FILM camera is very low battery consumption, their light meters get along with one tiny battery (which can not be charged) for more than a year even. Modern mirrorless DIGITAL cameras with their flippy screens and hi-res EVFs eat batteries very fast. Or are we just so used to the daily charging of our smart phones that we are fine with constant camera battery charging with our cameras as well? I often take a film body as a back up to my main digital gear these days, thanks.

Im still shooting a Nikon DF and D4 for my work related photography. But i tend to grab either my old film bodies like the Fm3a and FE2 or the Leica M4 for my day to day shooting. In a film phase again and it just sin-ire's me more using those older cameras and also the film. The way of shooting also becomes a more enjoyable process. Going home to check the memory card just is not the same as waiting a few weeks and then get the result and then instead be in the moment more when actually shooting :) I just got myself a M240 as well, so i guess that becomes like a mix between the two worlds for me, as the rangefinder reminds me of my M4 and also in some way slow me down a bit when i take photos. Another personal rangefinder favorite of mine lately is the Konica auto S3, lovely little film rangefinder im sure you heard about. So easy to carry and the lens on it is incredible. Already took some of my favorite street shots with it. really recommend it if you have not got it already Take :D Thank you for a great vid, was a fun watch! /Martin the Swede.

Thanks for sharing with me your gear. DF and D4 are great work cameras, like my X-T4 and X-H1. But for fun, I too grab for my film cameras. I also like being in the moment, no chimping, and then waiting weeks or months to finish a roll and be surprised by what I captured. I wish I had a digital M so I could include in this video as a true digital rangefinder, but I couldn't get one on time, but the price of the M240 is more reasonable. I'm waiting for a M11 so I can grab an M10 for a better price :-) Thanks again for sharing!

I love the rangefinder style. I’ve got the Fujifilm X-E3 and just picked up an X-Pro1 from Keh, just for fun and looks. And I am considering an X-A model for supplemental video work. I had a really cheap simple 35mm film point and shoot some 25 years ago in this style. No actual rangefinder window - just a little framing box in the viewfinder for its fixed and simple lens. But stylistically, I still thought it was cool and classic - the silver top and bottom, black mid-body, slim profile, viewfinder on the side instead of centered. That impression stuck with me and seems to be informing my current stylistic choices. Plus I do like that I can fit the X-E3 in cargo shorts pocket when using a simple cap lens.

I love my rangefinders as much as the next guy, but there's a reason the world mostly moved on to slrs - though debate isn't as relevant today due to the digital sensor. I had Portra 800 on my M6 and Cinestill 800T on my OM1 and wanted some shots of flowers in my backyard to see how each film reacted to the different flower colors. I wanted the max bokeh so I shot at the closest the M6 could go (0.7M), but I also didn't want the main flower in focus right in the center. I couldn't be sure I nailed focus after recomposing with the M6, but had no problem with the OM1 as I didn't have to recompose to know the flower was in focus. This is one reason of many why SLR>Rangefinder - at least to me. There are benefits to using a rangefinder but anytime I compared the benefits to each system, the SLR always came out on top. In the end, shoot with that makes you happy. Just don't lie to yourself just because you paid more for a particular system. ;)

im still curious about range finders mainly due to it's beauty and maybe the youtube sphere of how people "hype" the range finder over SLR. though trying a borrowed Olympus 35DC camera and vlogging about it - I really dont see the "capturing the moment" for its so quiet and no black out that honestly i dont know which moment i actually go when using range finder while in SLR when the black out happens, the last thing i saw before the blackout happens is the image i remember and know i captured. I get more confident and memory about what image i got with the SLR. (over all Im finding a few opposite experiences when listening to other videos online - like focusing is easier or faster and I just feel the opposite and its all just a learning curve to be faster) though still interested and appreciate the range finder in FILM and it still looks aesthetically more beautiful haha

I’m a street photographer primarily so I primarily use cameras with a RF form. Part of it is I am HCB and shoot with a Leica. Part of my RF body choice is I walk the streets for hours at end. I’m either using a 35 or 50mm equivalent lens. I value small and light. That being said, I have DSLR form comes too. I want to venture into short video clips and RF bodies have short video limits due to heat dispersion. Given the choice of RF or DSLR body style, I lean tows the RF. I can do street photography with either style but it is harder to imagine myself as HCB with A DSLR camera. What fun HCB would have with digital cameras. Mask on Nurse Marty

Looking through Leicas or those maddening Fujis is like being in an aquarium. I think, "What, I paid this much to feel sick?" Looking through mirrorless cameras is like watching TV. I think, "What, I paid for this tallent to watch them on a screen?" A DSLR puts me WITH my subject. I can talk to them until they're giving me the facial expression I'm after, then click, and I've got it. It thrills me no end that great DSLR bodies are cheap secondhand, though I suspect they'll be having a retro revival, for the reasons that I just mentioned.

I've been shooting with the Minolta CLE for the past couple years now? So I guess I've been a rangefinder guy. But there are some limitations that I have been struggling with which has found me trying out slrs. Have recently bought a contax 139q, because I used to own the Contax G1 but hated the auto focus but loved the zeiss glass so this seemed like a way to have my cake and eat it too. And I've also been dipping my toes in the nikon pool lol. Just picked up a Nikon FM. I love how much more control you can have over your image in comparison to the very basic rangefinder abilities. But im still waiting for them in the mail so have yet to actually shoot with them. But I am excited to see if I like the slr better than the rangefinder. I also prefer the zeiss "look" over practically any other look. Including leica and nikon even. So I'm highly curious to see what I end up favoring down the road once I've given these new slrs a spin. I've been thinking the ultimate combo might be the contax t2 for portability and on camera pleasant flash results. And the contax 139q for more control and lens choices etc. And basically stay in the contax/zeiss realm. I must admit I don't love the look of the Minolta glass either compared to the zeiss glass. Just seems duller

Nikon, Contax-Yashica, Leica R, all great SLRs. Nikon is nice because you can use the same F mount and have both AF and manual focus bodies and lenses. You also have a wider range of body and lens choices. Contax-Yashica have amazing glass and really cool bodies as well, many of which were Japan only. The Leica R was co-designed with Minolta, so I hav a soft spot for the Leica R series, as they are sister cameras to my Minolta XD cameras..... great optics too.

the rangefinder focusing system can be knocked out of alignment and needs to be tuned. That's what is hiding behind the Leica M red dot. So modern digital MF is more accurate, although peaking can be off as well. Mirrorless already has replaced DSLRs. It's just that the memo got held up by internal mail. This was inevitable. Here's the funny thing: a used GFX 50r is about the same price as a used, comparable MF DSLR like a Phase One or an older Hasselblad H. You tell me what the wiser purchase is. I find it odd that press photographers weighed themselves down more and more as SLRs overtook RFs. It makes no sense to me. Only now are we seeing a return to sensible camera choices like the A9 or even the E-M1 III (or any other mirrorless option). My prediction is that RFs will be made long after the last DSLR rolls off the production line. Personally I want to get back into RF cameras. I'll probably buy an M8 to start with, along with some CV lenses.

Ya it's funny to see things looking back, no matter what the technology was. I think the big thing was autofocus. Nobody could make a properly working hybrid manual and autofocus rangefinder camera. Either it was fully manual, or autofocus with manual focus by scale. Also when photographers needed wider or more telephoto lenses, nobody thought to make a built-in zooming optical viewfinder for ILC rangefinders, although they did exist on film point and shoots with zoom. I always wonder if digital photographer was never invented, where photography would be today.....

@@bigheadtaco You brought up a damned good point about AF, and by extension, AE. Neither were any good for a long time. Press shooters used to meter manually and focus manually a lot of the time. You wear 2 watches? Why? I thought to wear an Apple Watch on one hand and an automatic watch on another hand one day if I want to, but you have 2 analog watches at same time, why?

Fashion mostly, but also style and history. The early pilots wore two watches to show two time zones, before the invention of the GMT. Even when it was invented, not all pilots could afford a GMT so they would continue to wear two watches with two timezones. As an homage to them, I like to wear two as I use to travel a lot. I felt like a pilot. After a while, I had such a large watch collection, I couldn't wear them fast enough before having to hand wind them. It was easier to wear two for practical reasons, as well as aesthetic. In the end, it's just part of my style and personality. I really don't care what other say or what they think. I do me....

@@cybermike-exe rangefinders force you to imagine your image more, to pre-visualize, while SLRs gives you exactly what you're going to get. When I'm shooting technically, I want an SLR. When I'm shooting artistically and creatively, I find I'm better with a rangefinder. If this video does well, I'll talk about the creative process difference between the two in another video :-)
