When I started and could only afford one camera, I went with an SLR for the versatility. Now, I have both rangefinders and SLRs since, as you noted, they each have their places.

I learned film photography on a 70’s Minolta SLR that my dad loaned me for the class. Later on I bought my first SLR used in a pawn shop- a Pentax SP500. 25 years later I still have it and I added a very old Spotmatic to the line up as well as a K1000 given to me by a family member. The SP500 is my precious child and I’ll never part with it. It’s never been serviced and has never needed repairs… it just works. I am in the market for a rangefinder now just for the experience of a different system. Thanks for the many vids on the topic.

I choose both. I shoot rangefinder and SLR cameras. The Leica M6 is my favorite 35mm rangefinder and the Nikon F2 is my favorite 35mm SLR. I have lenses that range in focal length form 14mm to 1000mm for my SLR. I primarily use my SLR for shooting macro, extreme wide-angle, extreme telephoto, photojournalism, portraits, close-ups, and sports. I primarily use my rangefinder for shooting street, vacation, and travel or when I need to shoot quietly. I only have three lenses (90/35/21) for my rangefinder. The Fuji GW670 and GSW690 are my favorite medium format rangefinders and the Mamiya RB67 is my favorite medium format SLR. My rangefinders have a fixed lens. One has a fixed normal lens and the other has a fixed wide-angle lens. My rangefinders also have a fixed camera back and a fixed viewfinder. My SLR has interchangeable lenses, interchangeable camera backs, and interchangeable viewfinders. I use 180/90/50mm lenses on my SLR. I also have about a dozen film backs for the SLR. I also have two viewfinders (waist level and eye-level) for my SLR. I primarily use the rangefinders for landscapes, scenics, and general subjects. I primarily use the SLRs for macro, portraits, still lifes, and product shots.

AMAZING video. Thank you for making this. I’m just starting to try to get into cameras and have been trying to decide whether to get a rangefinder or SLR. Leaning towards the rangefinder more after this video. I just don’t know what one to get. I DONT mind spending a couple hundred dollars on one I just need some suggestions on what are good ones.

Very nice as always, and spot on: especially the two eyes open point. Parallax can be an issue but rangefinders are fun, and there's no battery failure anxiety (often age related amongst older male photographers), excluding me. 😇

I like both. SLR's for fast paced events and portraits. Rangefinders for street, travel and just plain fun!

Since I had to get glasses my love for Leica’s has come down. I sold all my Leica gear except my Noctilux. Want to get a mirrorless body to continue to use this lens.
