I use KZfaq a lot to check out products, repairs, etc. When I first saw that your video length was 8+ minutes, I almost didn't click on it. I guess I wanted my info quicker. BUT, I am so glad I clicked - your review was spot-on, and you asked the same questions I have about theses batteries. So, your approach was honest, informational, and thoughtful... and, your personality was definitely worth the extra minute or two. I think you just saved me some money, and some aggravation. Thank you!

Dude, thank you so much for making this video. It's stuff like this that I think is some of the biggest value on the internet cuz there's so many companies out there making inferior products. But that $80 discount from the OEM is very enticing especially when you have to buy two or four of these at a time. I really appreciate you not only talking about this, but also going over the parameters in which you were working. I think a lot of people need to know about specs and numbers, but to me my biggest concern is, does it actually work the way I need it to? And you answered that spot on. Happily subbed to the channel man!

I mainly bought it because the 2.5 Amp bat wasn't great for using it to trim edge and blow without having to recharge.. I can also mow my whole yard with thr 5amp.. if needed... I like it alot.. @@AroundTheHome1 Thanks for your video. Ive got a question to ask. I work offshore and I leave for 28 days. Will my ego hold charge and cut off after its charged are will it continue to draw electricity continuously. My light bill has went up and im trying to figure why. Was wondering
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 2 жыл бұрын
@Cleve Wilks ,first thank you for your question. Second, do me a favor and if you have any more questions, please start your own new comment thread. A comment on a comment is hard to find and easily missed. Ok, back to your question. Let me try and break that down. Your EGO battery is charged in about an hour using the standard charger. Depending on the Ah, you know, roughly an hour and it's done. People will argue over and over on that if it's ok to leave them on the charger. Even though newer chargers and manufactures say it's ok, it kind of isn't. When it's done with the charging, almost all newer charger units will switch over to a trickle charge. So they technically are not damaging the battery by giving it a hard charge after it is done, but it is still giving it a very slow charge after that. So, while overcharging definitely damages the cells, a slow trickle charge keeps them working. And batteries have only so many working hours, and that's what they are doing while under the slow trickle charge. Though, it shouldn't effect your electric bill any. It is a very small amount that it charges on the trickle, like maybe the same as a 25 watt bulb. Can't imagine that would be noticed on your bill. I would go ahead and take them off for the betterment of the battery, but I don't know what might be effecting your electrical bill. Now, if you do that, know that your EGO battery has a self storage mode that will activate after being inactive for over 30 days. The battery will automatically drain itself down to a 30% charge. That is the best charge for long-term storage. To fix that all you have to do is drop it back on the charger. Hopefully this helps out. do you have any online info sources for replacing the cells in Ego batteries? I have a 7.5 aH that came with my self-prop mower that's several years old now, and it's going dead a lot sooner than it used to. Interested in replacing the cells instead of paying $350+ for a new 7.5aH battery.

@Patrick94GSR first, thanks for your comment / question. And, please for future reference start your own comment thread. It is hard to find comments on old comment threads. As far as your question goes, I do not have an answer for you. I have looked into it and even called local battery companies that rebuild battery packs. They will not touch the new Lithium Ion battery packs. I feel your pain, but I would suggest to find some new tools that come with the battery and get that. It is your best bang for the buck.

Yes, EGO batteries not only have a heat wicking material that wraps each cell to blead heat off of them, but the circuitry has a safety that shuts it down if it is getting too hot still. There is also an over voltage safety in case the battery is getting an overloaded discharge. Glad it was helpful! Here is our webpage with everything EGO. Mine has actually been great and it's very comparable to my EGO packs that are 4ah. I know it's going to be hit or miss on some of these for sure. Experiences may vary for certain. I was very surprised by how similar the BMS boards are when comparing to original EGO. I mentioned in the look inside it's like they cloned a EGO board.

There marketing so focused on runtime, but as people get used to electric powered ‘everything’, they have to loosen the reins and put speed controls, higher performance blades, etc. on equipment and let people decide their own compromise between performance and runtime. Toro 60 volt Super Recycler best new example of that with 2 speeds and 2 blade choices.

I have several generic Ryobi batteries that I use all the time and they are not as good as name brand, but because they are so cheap I don't mind them going out quickly since I have several that I can swap out. However this Ruzixt brand is too overpriced. Maybe in a few years if this battery gets below $90, then it might make sense to buy two of them and switch them out as needed like I do with the Generic Ryobi's.

Ego customer service did me right with my 4yr old snowblower. It kept shutting down and the customer service rep and I went through all the tests over the phone and because there was not service dealer in my area they sent me a brand new snowblower. However, for some unknown reason my "Broken" snowblower started working again 🤨 Which was good because took almost a month for the new blower to get to me. So now the new blower sits in its box waiting to be put in the game when the the old one finally gives up the ghost. Plus I'll have lots of spare parts when that happens. 😁

Thats why its not lasting as long. It may be fine for the trimmer or something thats not as energy intense. But not too good for the mower. Hell even the ego batter gets pretty hot with the mower. but it last longer because of the sleeve.

The only think that I can think of is that the power station comes with the 7.5 Ah batteries and maybe that's why these batteries say that. And that is assuming you are looking at the 5.0 Ah battery. I have a new EGO 56V 2.5AH Battery Pack, bought two months ago with an EGO lawn trimmer. After the trimming was done on the lawn (September 20, 2022), I fully charged it and set it aside. So far, so good. The EGO Battery manual says that it is supposed to go to 30% after a month in storage, but as of November 5 , 2022 (well over a month), it still shows all 5 lines of FULL charge. It appears the BMS is not working to lower the battery pack to 30%. Is this battery defective? I read that at 80% or more charge, Lithium batteries lose 20% per year of capacity. I don't want to lose 20% a year. Just running the Battery Pack on the trimmer to force it down to 30% is NOT what the manual says I am supposed to do. What should I do?

Ok, I hear what you are saying. I assume that you have had it on a shelf and not sitting on a charger. Sorry, had to ask to make sure. If it has been sitting on a shelf and not used one bit for over a month it should drop itself. I would wait and finish off the month for it to be 2 months sitting before worrying too much. Did you register the warranty when you got it? If it still doesn't drop itself I would call customer service on it. You can always drop it manually if you don't want to go through warranty service.

@@AroundTheHome1 Thank you for your prompt reply. The Battery Pack was taken off the charger after it was charged and set aside as per "good practice" (EGO (Battery manual: It is good practice to unplug the charger and remove the Lithium-Ion battery pack when not in use.). When I charge a Battery Pack, I first plug in the charger, observe the charger leds do their thing to tell me the charger is ready, then put the EGO Battery Pack on the charger. I don't take the Battery Pack off the charger until the charger fan goes off, which tells me it is okay to take the Battery Pack off the charger. This Battery Pack went from red after a lot of yard trimming to 5 bars (FULL) on the charger September 17, 2022. So I took this Pack off the charger then and unplugged the charger from the wall socket.Yes, the Battery Pack was just sitting on a shelf. My wife would check the charge level every few days, but it never went below 5 bars (Full charge). I think your advice to wait another month is good. That said, after I asked for your advice yesterday, my wife decided to use the Trimmer again and that brought the Battery Pack down to 80%. It has been unseasonably warm here in Colchester, Vermont, so we may have more work for the Trimmer this week. That may get us to a good level for storage. If not, I'll just run the trimmer to get it to just below 50%. Maybe when they are so new (i.e. our 2.5 Ah EGO Battery Pack has less than 5 charges since purchased), the BMS doesn't trigger the 30% storage mode automatically after a month. I'll keep watching it and post here in six months or so to let you know the capacity is, hopefully, still good. Of course I only know the capacity is holding up if the amount of time the fully charged Battery Pack runs the Trimmer on our lawn before going to 15% red is about the same number of minutes. We'll see. Here is what the manual says (that had me worried): EGO BATTERY Packs MANUAL: For Lithium-Ion battery pack storage longer than 30 days: Store the Lithium-Ion battery pack where the temperature is below 80°F (26°C) and free of moisture.  Store Lithium-Ion battery packs in a 30%-50% charged condition.  Every six months of storage, fully charge the Lithium-Ion battery pack. Thanks again for your reply and informative video. 🤠

After reading comments on a similar video. I found out when hooking up generic batteries to the power station they register as 2.5 amp/hr no matter how big of a generic battery you buy. Which makes sense in your lawn mower. The BMS is shutting off due to low voltage thinking it's only a two and a half amp hour.
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 2 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting idea, but I disagree. If this generic battery registered as a 2.5 Ah battery on the charger then it would have stopped after 30 minutes, not over an hour. Also, I have tried one of my 2.5 Ah batteries in the mower and got half my yard done with it. This one didn't do a quarter of the yard. There was something else wrong with it.

I haven't had luck with generic tool batteries, either. Had a couple generic batteries for my Ryobi 18v system, and they sucked. Not only was the total capacity nearly half of the legitimate battery, but the voltage started sagging under load after very short real use. Based on my experience, I'll only buy a generic tool battery after they've been reviewed and show near OEM performance. Otherwise, saving 20-50% isn't worth it if the battery performs poorly. For Ego, best bet seems to buy with tools, as you get a much better deal.

My EGO battery sucks. I am cutting a tree about 12" diameter pine tree with an 16" chain saw. I would assume a chain saw can take a tree at 75% of the bar's length? The battery flashes red all the time. I hate this. My ECHO chainsaw worked longer and better!
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 2 жыл бұрын
Is the battery failing or is the safety shutting off because the bar is binding. I can take a 12 in diameter tree down with my 14" EGO saw, but if you start to bind the blade it will shut down and the battery light flashes red when that happens. You have to give it a few seconds before it will let you start back up. I know some people say that is crap, but it is not different then when you are using a gas saw and the motor bogs down and the chain stops. Yes the motor is still running because the clutch engaged, but electric saws don't have clutches so it has to shut down the motor to come to a complete stop. There was a small learning curve for me because I was used to my big 18" Husqvarna saw, but once I learned how the saw wanted to be used it's a non issue.

When it comes to lithium ion batteries you need top quality. It's not worth 70 dollar savings if it doesn't even last a year. Cells straight from China produce more head on account of having higher internal resistance. It's not worth it, it holds 5ah but more of it is thrown off as heat. Also you are risking your safety if you charge these indoors. These are big batteries that hold a lot of energy... you don't want them to be going into a thermal meltdown.

Most of these China batteries need to be rebalanced. This is a common indication for a unbalanced battery. One cell is fully charged and the others are not. The battery indicator shows the one that is fully charged this showing you the battery is fully charge but it’s not. the fix is to leave it charged for 2 weeks straight so that’s the bms can rebalance all the cells to 100%. These batteries use the same lithium ion cells in the ego battery.

I wonder if that's an issue I'm having. I put the EGO 5.0AH battery on the charger and it shuts off after about 15 minutes, yet only 2 bars (of the 5 charging green bars) were full. It took me 3-4 times, of removing the battery and putting it back on the charger, to fully charge the battery. The charger fan whirls up - but it simply would shut off after ~ 15 minutes - strange. Are you suggesting that I not use the battery for a couple weeks, to maybe get it to rebalance the cells, or are you suggesting to keep putting it on the charger after I use it, to constantly keep it topped up?

Yeah, I agree. Even these knock offs are expensive. The OP has another video because his knock bat stopped working...

Thanks for the video but I would never buy any Ego products ever again..I’m currently on my third battery..battery number 2 I used 2 times and went dead..I owned the ego lawn mower for 6 months..I mean I have the standard warranty but I’ll stick to Kobalt 80v cordless lawnmower never a problem..

Strange, i purchased a 2 year old Ego mower 3 years ago. It came with the original 4ah battery, I still use it and it works great being 5 years old. I keep the battery inside my home summer & winter. Did you do the same?

The older ego batteries are garbage even though they self maintenance themselves you still have to fully charged them after a month, even if not in use

I have to edit my reply above. I thought it was only 5yrs old but I was looking at the mower and battery and it’s 2014. So it’s 9 years old and on its first battery

The problem is, in my experience the actual expensive original EGO batteries also fail quite easily

I've had four. Only one failed within the warranty period and Ego replaced it. I wonder if they're engineered with some sort of timer to die after a certain number of years.

You sell EGO products. Why should anyone feel that this is an impartial review? I sure wouldn't.

You are misinformed. I do not sell EGO products, nor do I work for EGO in any capacity. I am also not sponsored by them. If you are referring to my Amazon links in the video description, those are Amazon links. I am an Amazon affiliate and I get credit no matter what link I put there. I could fill it up with all third party links. It has no connection to EGO whatsoever. You might get your information correct before you accuse someone next time.
