If it looks like it's going to drag out too long, you might look into a 3rd party clone battery. I have a couple of those and they do actually seem to work just fine. The warranty is not a good on those, but they're also a fair amount less expensive....so it's a trade-off (or a gamble, haha).

The quick summary is they Suck!! The following would be a similar encounter I had with them back in 2019. I had a brand new Gen-3 7.5ah battery go bad almost 13 months after receiving it in 2021 as a gift from a buddy of mine that knew I had EGO equipment and knew I had went thru hell with them just to get them to replace an in-warranty battery before. I believe I used this battery for as many as 20 times from a full charge until it was down to it's 20% battery level. Now the battery goes to red on a full charge within 2 seconds and and in any of the 3 EGO devices I put it in: the Blower, the Walk-Behind 21" and the String Trimmer. I called EGO' Customer service and explained it all to them. They wanted me to produce a receipt no matter what, which, of course I couldn't since it was a gift and had explained that to them at the beginning. Now what? So the 1st time I went through an in-warranty battery replacement with them they made me take pictures of the battery and all of my EGO products, from every angle and making sure the pics had clear, readable serial numbers in the images, as well as making me turn my house over to find the receipt. What a nightmare. I finally provided them with what they needed, in all of their attempts to shirk their warranty, and finally received a new replacement after about 5 weeks, back in 2019.

It seems like since about 2019 the batteries are hit and miss. I use the stuff commercially, but have been since 2013. The older batteries lasted 3 years or more with commercial use. Now I'm lucky to get more than 2.

Yeap, my 2.5s have both died, now I only have 1 battery to power everything....no good. I'll be going back to petrol power the way this is going

@@gandalf6923 it the receipt process that they require. When you buy their products with a battery included in the sale, the receipt does not include any mention of the battery. So you can purchase a $1,000 mower, with a battery in the kit, but there nothing on the receipt about the battery. Terrible system, poor frustrating service, feels like it is being done on purpose.

Did you receive new battery? I called them in April and was promised new battery, but still didn’t receive it.

Ego customer service reps are friendly, but they have no power. A call to them is like asking your grandmother to replace your truck transmission.

So you've had your mower for six years. I'd bet it has saved enough in gas and maintenance during that time to pay for a new battery. My electric riding mower saved enough in 54 months to pay for new batteries ($660) which I replaced at 58 month afternit had saved $715. How much gas and oil would a gas mower use in six years? Most people don't know because they don't keep track, but bellyache about the cost of a battery.

Yeah, I think as long as you take care to register your equipment with them properly, you'll be fine. I suspect a lot of people don't bother to take that step and that's where they have problems.

I agree with these new generation batteries being troublesome. I've only had one, but that one failed after 30 minutes of use. Took it back, and got an old stock battery without the fuel gauge. Flawless. My other two ego batteries are 5 and 4 years old respectively, and they're also flawless.

So do you think ego will update the 3rd gen batteries without publically announcing it? If so it might make it hard for buyers to know which version they're getting.

@@KiranPatel-fk1pg funnily enough, I just got a brand new ego tool. I have a feeling the third generation ego batteries have been updated without customer notice, because I noticed that the charging behavior is different, as is the behavior when you press the button to see battery level. Time will tell how this battery lasts.

yeah, it's definitely a legit concern. And you'll definitely pay more for these battery tools, so the 'value prop' has nothing to do with cost. I remember the guy at Lowe's telling me "think of all the money you'll save in gas"...HAHAHAHA For me, it's all about the quieter user-experience...no oil changes...no spark plugs...no fuel mixing...no fumbling with extension cords, etc. I'm happy to pay more to ditch those annoyances. But...if you DO have an out-of-warranty battery issue...it IS expensive. So it's a bit of a gamble. As far as continued long-term support for battery tech - I'd be a BIT less concerned about that since there are/will be no shortage of aftermarket options.

I have over a dozen Ryobi 18 volt tools from the '90s (blue/yellow) and they run just fine on the new lithium One+ HP battery packs. My first One+ 18 volt lithium pack lasted 13 years in rotation with 5 others. I also have a bunch of Ryobi's 40 volt OPE tools. I have the 21" Whisper Series snowblower and it is more powerful than the Toro 21" it replaced. I have 7 40 volt packs and 2 rapid chargers. I can run the snowblower for over 4 hours non-stop. The oldest 40 volt battery is only 2 years old, but rotating usage should extend their lifspan also.

@@ReeWrayOutdoors I mean.. you laugh, but realistically you do save a solid amount of money in gas, at least in my scenario. At 18c per kwh (the rate I'm paying now, I know its extremely high I got locked into a bad lease during inflation times) it costs me about $0.006 to charge a 7.5AH battery which gives me roughly 1 hr of cutting time on my Ego mower. The same amount of cut time consumes roughly 1 gallon of gas (at last check about 2.85-3.15$ depending which gas station). In east Texas we have 7-9 months of sunshine, lots of rain, lots of humidity, and fast growing lawns and weeds. Barely a winter at all. In the summer it is very common for people to mow their lawn once a week here. I try to stretch it to twice a month, but suffice to say there's a lot of mowing, weeding, limb cutting, hedge trimming etc to go around down here. We live in former swampland. Using electric tools you are basically guaranteed to pay back the battery dividend on gas savings alone. It is not at all far fetched. Avoiding the oil changes, spark plugs, fuel filters, rusted deck etc are just icing on the cake.

I have a similar battery with a similar remedy. It will occasionally quit while I'm using it. It will blink me the orange light. This is how I know the difference between depleted and malfunctioning. When malfunctioning I do like you and drop it from a few inches (if I'm using the backpack blower, I will leave it in the blower and drop the whole unit) I've got somewhere between 1,000 and 1,200 cycles on the battery.

I am a Ryobi owner and have dealt with numerous battery failures in their 18v packs. The 40v packs are more robust it seems. Many times the BMS shuts off after draining a low battery and I have to take it apart and charge up the pack manually. I too have gone with after market Ryobi type batteries and have not had one of them fail. I can’t be sure if it is the factory or just different components that make the difference. I am watching videos for battery failures as I consider what line to go with next. Whoever said battery tools were maintenance free? Haha. Thanks for the video.

@@brentjohnson6654 I have a number of Ryobi tools (just not for yard work) and have many of the OnePlus 18V batteries. I've never had one fail (in the 5 or 6 years I've had the tools). If they start to fail on me, I'd probably use that as an opportunity to look at a different ecosystem like Milwaukee.

My Toro Gas mower wore out in less then 5 years, my Honda mower was pretty much shot at 5 years... Unless you buy Commercial, or have a tiny yard, gas mowers just down last..and the Gas, the oil, the stabilizer, YUK......

@@dm285 I wonder if the problem is the 56v battery where as most other manufacturers use 36v. The ego has more cells to possibly fail, more complicated to balance as well, maybe more difficult to cool as well. I've got a 2017 husqvarna battery still going strong and it's done alot of work.

Yeah now THAT is a bunch of crap! Fortunately, I registered my tools and batts when I bought them and uploaded a copy of my receipt. But if the Battery MFG date is under the warranty period, they definitely should honor that!

How's the new battery, if you've had a chance to run it?

Other than the short-lived battery, I love my Ego, and I’ve expanded my Ego stable to include a leaf blower and string trimmer. I’ve had battery powered lawnmowers for 30 years, and the Ego is the best I’ve found.

I like the Ego lineup but ask just experienced the death of my first battery which is 2.5yrs since purchase. Far too short IMHO regardless of replacement. Part of the idea of going electric is environmental however I have concerns over what happens with all these old batteries. Not all of it is recyclable. I will add I was thinking about buying their chainsaw but now have definitely decided against that.

I hadn't heard that, but that's great if true! I have 6 batteries and have only had 1 issue so far. I think if you take care of them, your chances of having an issue are still pretty small. :) I remain a fan (as my most recent EGO video conveys).

I gave that a try on the bad battery to see if that'd work in my case... sadly, no luck. I still believe there's a way to fix it if I do enough research... just need to make sure I don't shock the crap outside myself in the process....

@ReeWray Outdoors I would be very careful with that. Lithium batteries are nothing you want the experiment on, if you don’t know what your doing. The liability of sending those unstable batteries back are too high is why they just let you keep it. I believe the only real way to make it usable again is to take it apart, break the soldering chain that connects all the batteries together. Test all the cells in an 18650 battery charger. Replace the damage cells with working cells and solder back together. Without blowing your hand off.

Yeah that's the plan anyway. I had a similar issue with drone battery. At the very least, I can use the failed one for parts if I need to in the future.

Yes good point on same voltage. Also the cells should al be matched in capacity as in aH. It wouldn’t hurt to look at the BMS board and maybe replace it if the new battery is not of similar amp-hour ratings. Just my 2 cents a year after your comment. I have just had an identical experience. New 7.5ah batteries as going for about $380 on Amazon. It is crazy there is no repair service or coupon offer. Nope sorry warranty expired. No longer a Ego fan.

I had an cheap ebike battery fail when one parallel cell group went to 0v. I replace the failed group with similar rated cells. Fortunately the group was the last and easily removed. While I had the battery apart, I took the advice of another ebike battery builder on KZfaq and added additional balance leads and connectors soldered in parallel with the internal balance leads so that I can check and balance charge the battery externally with an RC charger. RC chargers are capable of balancing much faster than a BMS. The balance connectors need to exit the battery casing so they can be accessed without having to take the battery apart. My ebike battery was 10s 6p, so I used two 5s( 6pin) connectors and split it into two groups. I purchased a fancy RC balance charger (ISDT Q8 or Air8) for about $70, that is capable of 8s charging because I wanted to be able to use it on 14s batteries split into only two groups. There is a Q6 version (1-6s) for only $35 that would require three groups. The RC chargers can easily stop at any voltage level if you are trying to extend battery life by not charging to 100%. The chargers use an external power supply and can be run off an old 19v laptop charger, or a car battery. In practice I bulk charge the battery most times and once in a while check it through the balance leads, and balance charge if needed. So far this set up has worked perfectly, and I expect to be able to get a much longer life from my battery because I can easily understand and maintain it.

I just had one of my 3.5yr old 2.5Ah batteries give me the red light of doom after putting it on the charger. Unlike the issue I had with my original 7.5Ah battery, I was able clear the issue by putting it in freezer for about 24 hours, and then allowing it to thaw back to room temp, and then put it back on the charger and it now performs normally again. This was a remedy suggested in the comments awhile back - didn't work for my 7.5Ah, but definintely seemed to do the trick for the 2.5Ah...for whatever reason. But YES! Keep (and upload) your receipt for full warranty support.

yeah, I have both types mounted on the wall and I typically use the slow charger for that very reason. I will say though that the fast charger does have a nice cooling system designed specifically those batteries so I'd guess that the impact on battery life is probably not a great as one might think. Better safe than sorry though, I guess, right? ;-)

Yeah, these are all great practices, for sure. I do (now) tend to use the slower charger by default, rather than the rapid charger, just out of an abundance of caution more than anything. But I will say the rapid charger does have an intelligent charge/discharge BMS so leaving it on the charger is not considered a problem. Also, it has a very active cooling system to pump airflow through the cells during charging to dissipate heat quickly, so I suspect EOG's rapid charger is not a big a concern for reducing battery life as people might think. That said, as expensive as batteries are, I'm still going to play it safe, haha! I also now bring my batteries inside for the winter so they don't get subjected to frequent freeze/thaw conditions. Not sure how much that helps, but again...better safe than sorry.
