Fuuka and Yukiko seem more popular in Japan than they are with the global audience... A common criticism being that they're boring. So are the Priestess girls really that boring? Are their struggles really that unrelatable/unrealistic?
In this video, we'll be going over how this is a case of "values dissonance" between Japan and Western audiences.

Oof I wasn't as clear regarding Fuuka as I was hoping to be... she's not worried about fulfilling any role in particular (like studious Makoto or heir-apparent Yukiko) when it comes to societal *obligation*, as she is just worried about contributing her fair share to society. Remember... collectivist culture and all. She's also worried about her femininity in a way Mitsuru, Yukari, and Aigis aren't since she does place a lot of weight on what society thinks of her (which also leads to her low self-esteem issues). Anyway, I've saved the main discussion on Yukiko's take on the traditional "Yamato Nadeshiko" archetype for her specific video. I have a lot of anecdote to share from my own family and overall Japanese American community. Lots of other "Values dissonance" ideas to explore later down the line, but if you have a question/topic related to this culture clash, I'd love to hear them! 🎮TWITCH: www.twitch.tv/ladyvirgilia 🐤TWITTER: @VirgiliaLady twitter.com/VirgiliaLady 🌟PATREON: www.patreon.com/LadyVirgilia GENSHIN LORE CHANNEL~ kzfaq.info TRAILS ARCHIVE CHANNEL~ kzfaq.info/love/KeYVSRpMYQnyB7CZkNyLIg

Thinking back, Fuuka's cooking does seem more played for drama in P3 as part of her insecurities, it's only spinoffs that turn it into a joke alongside the P4 girls. As I recall it's rarely brought up outside her first Social Link rank back in P3 and she shows realistic, gradual improvement instead of it getting worse and turning into Eldritch Abominations the further in you go...

Belated response but... Fuuka, Yukiko, and Makoto boring?! *withholds urge to laugh* Fuuka and Makoto's family situation is VERY relatable to me as Makoto finds it VERY hard to measure up to Sae and Fuuka? Boy, can this girl get a happy ending? (probably why I kind of ship her and Natsuki) And from what I've seen of her parents (or rather alluded to) there doesn't appear to be any real connection or bond between her and her parents, something I REALLY know something about personally as it's HARD to try to talk to people whose own desires and wants are more important than then their kid's. And Yukiko? At the very beginning of P4, she gives off the image of someone unapproachable when in reality? She's a goofball with a knowledge of horror-based stuff (Yukiko being the P4 girl who doesn't get freaked out by ghost stories or similar things especially compared to say Chie or Naoto) and missing a fair bit of social cues.

What I'd seen personally of Yukiko's lack of popularity here is that people don't like her Social Link because she goes back on her dream. But they don't realize that it was an impulsive dream; that she would in all honesty be a Fool; pun intended in many ways, of course; to just assume that no one in the inn cares about her outside of being an heir, and to leave them all behind to follow such an impulsive dream.
@jasonblalock4429

Also, the inn having real history and being one of the only historic attractions in the town really complicates things - especially as we see Junes screwing up the town's economy. Yukiko abandoning the inn would be incredibly selfish and, while not certain, could easily doom it and destroy one of the few unique things Inaba still has going for it.
@LadyVirgilia
@LadyVirgilia Жыл бұрын
While I wouldn't necessarily call it irresponsible per se, Yukiko's SL just seemed like a very knee-jerk reaction to a very abnormally stressful time for the inn. I can't imagine the Amagi Inn would have repeated deaths happening there in the future lol... it just seemed like it was the fallout to those events itself/people's perception of it, that aggravated Yukiko's dissatisfaction vs. any actual discontent with her role there. Teens are biologically more emotional when it comes to stressors though (their prefrontal cortex/logical part of brain not being fully developed yet), so it was an understandably brash reaction to me. But upon taking some time to "cool-off" and address the stressors, she realizes she still actually loves the place. Having had some experience in mental health counseling, I think people would be surprised at how conflicted one's emotions can get, and how many are actually just a symptom rather than the actual root problem.

Yukiko was my favorite but what was her dream again? Lol I always thought she just wanted out of the inn because she felt forced to do it. But then she chose to do the inn anyways. It was never about not wanting to work at the inn. I thought it was that she wanted to feel like she could make her own choice. So when she ran the inn of her own choice rather than feeling like she had to that was her getting what she wanted out of life. Maybe I'm remembering the game wrong but I thought this is how it went down
@sephikong8323

Never understood why Yukiko's final resolution sounded like a step back for many people. Her dream of making it on her own and leaving her family and legacy behind was a rash decision that she made because she only thought of herself for once and thought that since she didn't have a say in the choice that meant she didn't want it, only to realize when put under pressure that she actually likes the inn and the people there and that they care about her in return and don't see her as just a future tenant. Basically, at the start she was going to be the future innkeeper because she was meant to and resented that as they never asked her opinion and she starts to ponder leaving, but by the end he stays and is meant to become the future innkeeper because she realized that this is what she actually wants and not just some duty that she has to follow To me this is also a really great lesson because, it's okay to want to leave your familial obligations behind to follow your own dreams as is often depicted, but what's wrong about following in their footsteps if this is what you want as well ? Being set in for a path from birth can be daunting and such, but it's not a guaranteed that when given the choice to do so everyone would chose to escape that, many would in fact take this position willingly It's not a struggle I relate to at all, but it's also really well done and a pretty nice message that is good to juxtapose to all of the "escaping the burden placed upon me" by showing the other side of the coin
@artificialaceattorney6822
@artificialaceattorney6822 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. There are two key moments that hint that she's not entirely sure. First is when she hopes the inn will close so that she won't feel bad about leaving. Second is when she says she won't be able to return if she leaves, because she'd be too guilty to return.

Yeah, people (especially in the West nowadays) think freedom means completely rejecting anything that is set up for you or that is traditional, even if you want it. I've seen a fair share of people criticising women who *want* to clean the house and take care of children as them conforming to the patriarchy when they're just doing what they want, even if it's not having a job and being a stay at home wife/mother.

Naoto made it very clear she wanted to follow her family's footsteps as a detective. The main difference is that she tried too hard in this goal, and thought she had to be a man to do it. The image she had from fictional detectives were men, and the Japanese police that had to work under her were men, who resented having a young girl leading them. She was resented for not fitting the image of an ideal detective by the police force and herself, while Yukiko resented that she fitted the image the ideal Japanese woman in the eyes of her family.

My problem with Yukiko wasn't her story arc, but how it was framed. The hero's journey requires a certain amount of adversity to make them reaching their goals impactful. It's fun to cheer for them and by rooting for their victory, you end up getting attached. Yukiko faced adversity during her kidnapping arc, but because of the Yamato Nadeshiko character not being allowed to seriously complain or struggle inelegantly, her social link seems devoid of any further difficulty that actually impacts her. So it reads very easily as her backsliding into circumstances others decided for her without Yukiko properly working for it or wanting it. And this comes AFTER her very real internal battles in the TV world got me invested, so I suppose I felt rather betrayed. Additionally, by not allowing the main character to argue or be concerned over her changed opinions, Yukiko never really gets to explain the quiet, impressive resolve that underpins her new decision. Having watched these videos on Yukiko, I can now see what the creators were going for but maaaan did it go over my head when I first played this game.
@FlareBlitzBanana
@FlareBlitzBanana Жыл бұрын
Something I really related to regarding Yukiko’s social link is the expectation of expectations. Yukiko assumed that her parents are going to force her to run the inn, so she ends up hating the idea of taking over the family business. But when she’s told that it’s her choice and that her parents would accept her choosing a different path, she becomes willing to run the inn. I used to think my parents would kill me if I didn’t do well in school, which made me not want to live at all in a world with impossible expectations. But I eventually learned I was the one who set those myself.

This is a good point, but I have a correction. She mentions that her parents always knew about her decision to leave and didn't stop her in her extra Social Link event/third-tier Persona awakening in Golden, which is implied to be after she decides to stay before her Rank 9 event.

Why Ryuji is so well-liked in the west could be the subject of its own video, it's something I still haven't really grasped even though I have a pretty good idea of why Junpei is popular and Yosuke is disliked. Priestess characters do tend towards "Yamato Nadeshiko" archetypes, which are far less popular outside Japan unless their shyness verges into "adorkable" territory. I've seen a lot of analysis on how Japan praises "quiet strength" and not outwardly showing your emotions, and I really see that in the priestess characters. The arcana itself is the first form of "feminine energy" in the Tarot deck so it makes sense it'd conform to Japanese ideals of femininity. One thing I love about these characters though is they can be extremely badass when the time's right. From Fuuka's awakening, to Yukiko snapping at the reporters (still one of my favourite SL ranks in P4 despite Yukiko's being far from my favourite), to Makoto's awakening and slapping Eiko. 5:03 The anime somehow managed to make Kaneshiro even uglier, wow. On South Korea, that just makes me think of how my mum's got hooked on a K-Drama involving North/South Korea tensions, and it goes into how "western" and "individualistic" South Korea feels compared to North Korea. So often how collectivist a society is can be a relative thing. Re: cooking. Did you know that Yukiko actually makes a decent meal in her platonic Rank 10? Yep, she gets better at cooking, but only if you DON'T romance her! The platonic Rank 10's are hardly seen or discussed so a lot of people miss this. I also like how the one female in P4's party who's not terrible at cooking is Naoto, the least feminine one. I never realized that Yukiko inheriting the inn was actually gender-progressive. I see the whole arc in a new light now. (It gets a ton of hate from westerners due to her going back to the inn supposedly contradicting her Shadow arc) Fuuka's love of machines is something I wish got more focus, I feel like it shows up a couple of times and just gets forgotten, which is the main part of why I tend to find her "boring". It comes up a bit in Arena though. I'm glad you mentioned not every society is a monolith. Japanese people are, well, people, and everyone's going to be very different. Really interested to hear what you have to say about the slapstick scenes.

I could definitely do a quick video on the bro characters! I'll add it to my list! :) And yes, the Priestess girls are the "yamato nadeshiko's," of their respective games. Yukiko especially so thanks to Inaba's rural and more traditional setting. She definitely subverts the trope a lot though, especially for a game that came out in ~2008. I've saved most of that discussion for Yukiko's video in particular. But yeah also from my own lived experience, many of my aunties, even the very highly "assimilated" ones on my dad's side, have very YN demeanors. Especially when we're out in public. My mom was actually quite a "subversion" on the YN expectation herself, which got her in trouble with her dad a lot. I'll talk about it more in the Yukiko video, but before she moved to America with my dad (this was in the 80s), she had founded and owned three of her own clothing businesses, and a lot of men didn't like that -.- Said she was "tarnishing her image." Societal misogyny man... it's a sad thing to see. But yeah "quiet strength" is everything, even still in it's on way in the Japanese American community despite all of them trying to get rid of any JP heritage post WWII (for obvious reasons...). The biggest controversy to come out of the internment camps was a small group of Nisei (2nd generation) adopting a "No shou ga nai" protest. Basically no "it can't be helped," bullshit, I'm gonna fight for my rights as a citizen of this country. It didn't go anywhere despite Korematsu's case making it to the Supreme Court, but these kids were ostracized from the larger community ever since then. But hell, even I view "quiet strength" positively. It's just part of my inheritance and culture. I don't expect everyone to display it, but it's something I largely try to demonstrate and admire. Yukiko inheriting the Inn has a lot of "asa-dora" vibes to me. "Asadora" is what Japan calls the traditional morning dramas that have aired since the ~60s on NHK channel. Usually the premise revolves around a young woman (oftentimes who has YN traits), inheriting her dad's/uncle's, some man in her family's business. I feel like it's kinda a vicarious, feel-good fantasy for a lot of the housewives lol. Though once again, nothing wrong with the women who like that kind of lifestyle themselves. Women aren't a monolith lmao. And speaking of, yes even collectivist cultures vary on "interoversion-extroversion" scale, like how India and many parts of SE Asia are much more gregarious/extroverted than East Asia, but still have the whole familial/societal expectation thing going on. Thanks always for the thoughtful comments Klingy! And for spurring some additional ideas and/or anecdotes I can cover later down the line!

@@LadyVirgilia Don't push yourself too much but a quick video on them would be interesting. Interested to hear your take on the archetype, the main thing I know is her laughing fits are framed like a massive trope subversion in the story. (Also interesting: they're not something her Shadow ever does despite it being a part of herself she hides, further showing how Shadows are only one part of someone) Sorry your mother had to go through that, but it's also a good highlight of this kind of thing. Not sure how related this is, but I recently learned that just before WWII, Japan proposed a racial equality bill in the League of Nations and America openly rejected it. Never heard of Asa-dora before, that's why I like your content.

I have no idea why Ryuji is well liked anywhere. I hate the fucker with every fiber of my being. He's obnoxious, yelling about how you're the phantom thieves every 30 seconds. Moreover he's literally just P4 Kanji again but lacking any nuance or likability Kanji had. I mean they both: have delinquent reputations and trouble with authority, dyed blonde hair, are kinda stupid, loud, aggressive, single mother, use blunt weapons, Zio and physical movesets (only difference is Ryuji has Chie's physical moveset because Chariot). The game even notes in canon that Ryuji has no reason to be in the plot, no role on the team. When you start a confidant it cuts to Sae saying you must have had someone to do x job or provide y service; for Ryuji all she can say is that you must have worked with someone. Also I hate the "it's in their head" thing 1.) It's not in their head those are legitimate problems girls face in Japanese culture as you said 2.) Even if it was in their head that doesn't make dealing with the problem any easier. I've personally never felt the priestess girls were boring and uninteresting or that their struggles were hard to grasp! Being a more quiet and reserved person I relate to their character traits on an individual level of course, but I also feel that their situation and personal conflicts were presented with a sincerity (if that makes sense?) which made it easy to connect with and build empathy for them despite the cultural barrier. Though I also have an especially strong attachment towards Fuuka as I felt her character and conflict hit very close to home for me as someone who struggles with social anxiety and low self-esteem. I'm always so grateful for these kinds of analyses! They offer such a valuable Japanese perspective in understanding themes and characters and it makes me appreciate a lot more of the series' aspects! It's interesting to learn how a lot of the Priestess Arcana's circumstances actually deconstruct or subvert traditional Japanese gender norms. It's a little comical and ironic to think that their attempts almost have the opposite reaction in the West with how a lot of people think they double down on those values instead, especially with Yukiko's social link! Something about Persona 4 discourse is cursed I swear! 🤣🤣

As a quiet introvert with a reserved personality. I think makoto’s issue is she comes on strong right into her introduction. She isn’t nice to the main characters and is immediately trying to get them in trouble without even once speaking to them or hearing their side. That and the fact the story goes out of its way to tell you she’s “so smart with a bright future” was a bit frustrating because she just antagonizes Ren Ann and Ryuji. Even blaming Ann for not being there for her friend. But like makoto never spoke to shiho or asked how she was and she definitely isn’t close to Ann so how would she know what Ann did or didn’t do for Shiho? She’s not boring at all but she needs to work on her empathy. Even though I didn’t like her at first she definitely grew on me.
@BigKlingy
@BigKlingy Жыл бұрын
The "smart with a bright future" thing I feel is less shilling her and more emphasizing the societal pressure on teenagers to perform well in academics in Japan. Getting a college recommendation is a HUGE deal and the "bright future" thing is just kinda how it goes in Japan: simply being accepted into a good college virtually guarantees you stable employment. Which is something Makoto desperately needs because her family has no male breadwinner.

Makoto's confidant actually doubles down on her lack of respect towards others. She admits that the "old her" would have looked down on Eiko for not focusing on school as Eiko doesn't have to since her parents will just give her a job at their business in the future. This SHOULD normally lead to her finding positive qualities & a true mutual respect for Eiko, but instead the confidant ends with her getting into Eiko's relationship issues to the point where she makes a big scene of it in public, slapping & hitting Eiko in front of a big crowd. She even refuses to be the first one to apologize or reach out to Eiko after she ran off, stating that Eiko needs to "cool down" first & then they'll talk. It's incredibly victim-blaming & even more disgusting is that Makoto deems this as justice served even though Tsukasa has not been arrested or fired & none of his victims are rescued from their forced sex work. Makoto literally was nearly sold into sex slavery herself during the Kaneshiro arc, aka her true introduction which makes her come off as cruel & hypocritical, which I doubt the writers were intending. >.

@sochintzy4528 Жыл бұрын
@@mlkywine6852 I feel like people just kinda forget the entire context of that first interaction. She starts off hostile towards them & treats them more like obstacles in her path rather than as victims of a convicted criminal. And then she still doesn't show any compassion towards them even tho she was compassionate towards the students who asked for her help. Although that may be an unintentional recurring character flaw - Makoto only showing kindness towards people who actively seek her for help & not towards people who didn't ask for her help. It kinda feels like she feels her position (as stuco prez & honor student) means that it's perfectly okay for her to demand things of others (unless they are adults, specifically ones with authority over her) & thus doesn't know how to react when people deny her that or say that she hasn't done enough. Hence why she does things like demanding an adult yakuza tell her if he's breaking the law & why she victim-blamed Ann about Shiho. That latter is doubly ironic because Ann was tricked into thinking she WAS doing something to help Shiho & didn't have any real options to help her. Even if Shiho quit the volleyball team & Ann refused Kamoshida, he still has plenty of other girls he's 100% going to take it out on & make it out to be their fault for making him angry.

I've always really liked Yukiko, not just because of her style but also that duality of looking like the traditional Japanese beauty, and being a hilarious goofball when you actually get to know her. On the matter of their Bad Cooking gag, I didn't think too much of the traditional ties of knowing how to cook to being part of that feminine ideal--though I get it that it's a major part of that skillset for a traditional housewife. Being a cook myself, I think it's just a very important skill to know even while you're young. I was more amused by the flip of how the P4 Protag was the best cook among the Investigation squad, owing to his role as being everyone's reliable big brother kinda character.

I also recall a comment revealing that the Priestess arcana is heavily centered around the idea of a distant knowledge that can be used to help people, hence why Fuuka's, Yukiko's, and Makoto's social links are all very focused on a separate character or party, particular the girl's relationship with said character or party.

Even though I'm a born and raised American, I still related to Makoto's feeling/need to be good to uphold her family's status. I felt a similar way growing up in a church that greatly valued family, where anything the child does was reported to the parents and everything you did as a child reflected your parents. When I died my hair for the first time, there were a lot of concerned people coming to my mom asking what was wrong with me and if I was rebelling, even though I just wanted to have fun. Growing up in that kind of environment installed a "don't be a burden" mindset on me. Where I learned I shouldn't be abnormal or I would get my family in trouble. This personal experience made me relate to Makoto, in addition to being the second born child in my family. It made sense to me that she didn't want to tarnish her family- or her older sister's- reputation. Meanwhile my older sibling found her boring and annoying, which made it clear that they did not experience life the same way I did growing up.

I remember having mixed feelings about Yukiko (the cooking thing played a role) but that she grew on me over time but didn't stand out as much as others. Makoto meanwhile feels so strong to me because the expectations put on her suck, but she seems capable of kinda hacking it. Like she could've pretty easily continued being a cog in tradition along a path beyond her own choosing and been content, successful even. She's realizing that it's just all bullshit and the whole system is rigged and efforts to fit in are likely to be taken advantage of AND furthermore that the system as a means of justice falls short (at school or beyond). Theres a more intrinsic motivation there. That's why her transition into becoming a phantom thief feels so good and her costume says it all. Punk as hell and hard as nails. In reality she's still on her journey to break the shackles of rigid social systems and is learning to be less uptight, but as a phantom thief she's gonna make you pay for real. It's almost as if because of her familiarity with the system makes her all the more jaded to its failings. The abiding citizen to rebel arc is an underrepresented favorite of mine.

Like I was borderline eye rolling at how stereotypical "arent I such a trad wife" she was so hearing people say she ISNT that girly by Japanese standards is wild. P5 SPOILERS Its kinda like how Ryuji is your stay by you bro who goes RIDICULOUSLY out of his way to be loyal to people who thinks he deserves it but is disliked because he is loud and chill. Like it seems the focus is on the minor surface shit for why they are disliked without looking at their overall character at all. Or the opposite, that shit lord Akechi being surface level "oh look at the poor damaged pretty boy" but he was openly derisive of you from the moment he met you, every single line was him openly or subtly insulting you and your friends, he fuckin murdered dozens of people some of whom were family to the main cast, and his ONLY excuse for why he did what he did was that his dad abandoned him. Thats it. Something literally millions of people have gone through and worse. He wasnt satisfied with being famous, rich, and adored. That wasnt GOOD ENOUGH for him, hes a selfish narcissist but he apologizes on his death bed and Japanese audiences are like "oh he repented look at that we forgive you".

Creating characters based on arcana is smart really. It really shows what types of people is popular in what culture. How much a character resonates with different people shed light on how they grew up. Though for some reason, Makoto doesn't really strike me as a Priestess, first I saw her, I was so sure she's an Empress, like Margaret and Mitsuru.

One other thing I should note is that there is another Priestess girl that actually fits the archetype if you look closely at this character. Yes, Maki Sonomura. She was fed up with the amount of time she spent in the hospital and she dreamt that she was never sick at all, but despite being more extroverted than the rest of the girls, she also has a steel demeanor to the point that she resented her mother. Don't forget that she's also a well-achieving girl, having her paintings won several competitions. However, my take on why everyone didn't think about her in the discussion is because of the fact that she appeared in the very first Persona game, a 1996 game, where everything is straightforward SMT-like gameplay, so there's little room for character growth by any means, says, Social Links or stuff. Moreover, the third game is what makes the series gain a solid fanbase outside Japan, not to mention the infamous character modification in the first game in the West (cough in Masao).

I think Yukiko's Social Link is one of the more misunderstood ones. People commonly think that Yukiko's decision to inherit the inn is a betrayal of her character development toward becoming more independent but that's not true. She gradually remembers what the inn and its employees mean to her, and decides to re-commit herself to inheriting the inn because she wants to, not because people expect her to. It's also subtly implied that she has second thoughts about her decision to leave, such as when she's determined not to come back if she leaves due to being too guilty to face everyone. Similarly, Makoto's is about her rekindling her passion to become a police officer, and finding a good goal to study toward. Eiko represents a foil to Makoto as a girl with poor grades who's nevertheless more in touch with her peers than Makoto, but the social link shows the downsides of that mindset. By helping someone different from her, Makoto helps understand her own choices better, and also helps Eiko turn her life around as well.

The Priestess girls are some of my favorite characters in the franchise, with Yukiko and Makoto being my hands-down favorite female characters from their respective games (I like Mitsuru best of P3, although I do enjoy Fuuka too). What you said about these characters tending to withhold outward displays of emotion and keeping things to themselves so as not to rock the boat resonated with me and may be part of the reason I enjoy their characters so much. I live in a Western country, and I am an introvert, so I often find that what makes me feel comfortable or what I value goes against the societal expectations of extroversion and individualism where I live. I have zero understanding of how anyone could describe Makoto, even as viewed through a western lens, as being “spineless” or “boring” when her confidant arc most clearly translates that central theme of rebellion and personal justice to the western audience. Her role as both the “brains” and the “brawn” for the PTs is even more remarkable within the Japanese cultural context. When she tells Ren she wants to be equal partners in their relationship, the significance may fly over the heads of westerners, but that’s a pretty huge rebellion against those traditional ideal woman expectations of her culture - expectations that she has been obediently conforming to up until joining the Phantom Thieves. Absolute badass.

I think the main problem they have is how little they add to the overall plot after their arcs. @@mlkywine6852 (not expecting anyone to read this) but I feel like that’s the beauty of these games. Wanting a character to grow and become more than they already are is exactly what drives the player to hang out with them. Those who you want to see develop become your focus while those who are less interesting can be ignored. You don’t need to see everyone’s development, and that gives the player more freedom. I understand the frustration that most characters don’t see development in the base story; it’s rather annoying seeing the characters that you enjoy remain flat and go under minimal conflict. However, I think the base story in most these games decides to focus on the plot more so than the characters themselves. That is not saying that each character don’t get their moments of characterization throughout the stories, just that the journeys’ destinations are not that of growing as characters. That growth is left to the freedom of the player on who they want to prioritize and see grow as a character. There is definitely a valid arguement that this makes the characters feel replaceable. Which in all honesty, is ultimately true, they are all replaceable. But, even if their role is insignificant, every character has their own charm and makes the game feel as if they deserve to be there. You could easily switch out Ryuji for a different personality, switch around the story so it fits with that personality, but ultimately, would you want to? How about switching out Chie, or Morgana, or Teddie? This all ties into my initial thoughts, as the charm that each one of these characters have is exactly what strives you to want to learn more about them. It’s just a different way of writing, which ultimately puts the player at fault if they didn’t feel like a character was emphasized enough. It’s why a majority of the game is taken up hanging out with the characters, as that’s to give the player as much time to bond with the characters they enjoy. Just my thoughts. (Side Note) I hope my perspective isn’t shortsighted as I haven’t played Persona 3 and am yet to finish Persona 4. Also, sorry for the essay, just speaking my mind.

Also I love her laughs and how witty she can actually be. With Fuuka on the other hand though, not only her SL was the most boring for me (not my least favorite one though, that goes to Kenji and Nozomi), but also really shallow in everything it exposes. Also her Second Awakening was by far the weakest among the party members, since the event that triggers it is but an afterthought that comes out of the blue without any kind of build up, nor does it have any impact in the main storyline (neither the other way around).

As a result, even though I don't understand their points of view from a lived experience per se, I think that Makoto is one of my favourite characters! That she is alienated from her peers and her older childhood because of the immense pressure put on her to perform certain roles because of the adults in her life is actually pretty messed up and sad. It's compelling to me to see a character who has a life like that and see them navigate or overcome that life if they're able because it's hard to be a kid who is not taken seriously otherwise but used because they're smart or responsible, etc.

Never understood why people thought makoto was boring. She’s clearly been highly conditioned to behave very responsibly from her elders, it’s all caused her to be very afraid to truly be herself, even amongst people who understand her like the PTs. I’ve always found that very relatable with her. I’ve also found it very interesting that all the stress she’s accumulated from all that builds up, and when she finally awakened to her persona, all that years worth of pent up anger, and other emotions she was forced to bottle up finally reached that tipping point and let loose. Also she’s a fan of the Yakuza series. People who like Yakuza, I assure you, they are not boring people. She is cultured.

As someone who had been bullied growing up, I resonated a lot with Fuuka when I first started playing Persona 3 and she's become my favorite of the P3 girls ever since by a long shot. While her own issues stem from a loss of confidence in herself, especially when she considers both the career her parents have vs. her own interests and her desire to self improve using cooking when her true strength lies in engineering (apparently in P3P on female route she becomes a passable cook and in later games she's capable of at least making simple foods on her own vs. P4 girls remaining eternally inept) you can see a lot of dissonance between what people what her to be vs. what she herself wants to be. I'm glad she managed to get over those hurdles and grew up to be someone proud of who she is and became Aigis' good friend and caretaker for her repairs. I also feel in my heart she kept those headphones she gave the protag in rank 10 as a reminder to never give up on herself.

i love this video so much. tbh, many of my friends love makoto and yukiko, so i was surprised when i found out they were considered boring by many people in the west (i'm brazilian). that being said, my friends, although they like the priestess chars, they expressed how surprising it was for them to know that i, myself, relate a LOT to these girls. see, my teen years were packed full of me hiding things from my family because i needed to keep my grades up and couldn't say i liked girls or, just in general, didn't conform to their christian values. and people used to tell me "well, when you grow up, you can just leave your house and live your own life!". but the thing is... i hated that idea. i didn't want to leave my family. even though i couldn't be myself with them, i still loved and appreciated their other sides. now, as an adult, i still feel suffocated and, technically, i have the means to leave my family's house. but my grandma is sick and i can't bear the thought of leaving my mother to deal with everything on her own. i often, sooo often hear my friends say that i sacrifice myself too much for my family, and i get that. to them, i would be happier if i went to live alone and not have to justify or hide things anymore, but to me, not being there for my family when they need me would tear me apart. i'd be "free", but empty. sure, i hope for a future in which i can be myself in front of them without any worries, but for now, i'll keep sacrificing myself. i relate so much to yukiko and makoto because of all that T-T btw thanks for this analysis a lot, i hope more people can understand these characters now~

For me, it was always how much I related to a character that makes me like them or not, and for someone who thought that by being better at school or a certain job was the way to be “popular” or gain a lot friends, I completely relate to these characters, it just the way I viewed my life. And in my case, I strongly like Makoto because i had to go through what she goes through to a certain extent, being the one to stay at the top at something can cause you a lot of problems and stress and makes you forget why are you doing what you do in the first place, and it’s only through going out of your way to find answers that you would change your perspective on things and realize how much better you could do if you had people who are actually friends and care to tell you what you need to hear and have to realize.

Also, never been a fan of people or characters who can’t keep their hands to themselves especially in combination with the annoying _“girls are scary when angry”_ trope. I’m already someone with an aversion to buzzkill characters who act dismissive or controlling of other people’s lives and seeing that in a character the game explicitly pushes you to respect and adore is tiring ngl. Each person's culture and individual personality definitely factor in how they view each character. For me growing up in a more Asian culture and having more of a reserved personality, I definitely mostly gravitate to the personality of the Priestess characters. Objectively and relatively speaking, I do think their personality can be "boring" compared to the other characters. That being said, I personally find those traits a plus so they're not necessarily negatives and deal breakers as some may find. While Makoto may have lots of popularity from the Western fanbase, I also feel like she's judged quite unfairly due to said popularity and arguments on her character often diminishes her in a selectively biased way. For example, some may argue she's a Mary Sue and lack and lack any real flaws while others may say she has these negative traits that make her unlikable. From those, I feel like those people either just didn't really relate or graps the type of struggles she's portrayed to be dealing with or just simply diregarded those sections of the story in order to satisfy their view of her. This is kinda a side note but I don't really get the sentiment of feeling strong dislike for certain characters (at least the main cast). Sometimes, I feel like some people just don't take the time to really understand each character and instead focus more on tearing other characters down to prop up their favorite and justify that they're "better".

While I find the palace you get her at to be arguably the most boring of them, her story outside of the Metaverse and how much of a personal involvement she has in the main plot makes her (to me anyways) more of the main crew than Ryuji or Ann. Despite being there for the first palace and being founding members of the phantom thieves, I feel like both Ryuji and Ann to both be so minor and passive in the story when compared to Makoto.

She's a woman who almost gets trapped in the same careerist ways as her sister because she wants to honor her father, but through her encounter with the fantom thieves, she realizes that this is not the life she wants to lead or maybe not how she wants to lead it and tries to become a better person throughout the game. She is smart enough to understand her weaknesses and fights to overcome them. The fact that her persona remind me of Arcee from Transformers Prime is also kinda great because I love this character too for similar reasons Maybe it's because I'm really intrigued by this kind of introvert "secret" person irl. I never thought Makoto was boring, I identified a lot with Makoto's motivations and understood the stressors she felt. For me, someone having heart through their adversity is a HUGE personal highlight. She bore the weight of expectation and still rose to the occasion, not giving up on finding a personal motivation instead of just going through the motions. Being inspired by her father whom she lost was also immediately endearing and relatable. I suppose the P4 anime is a poor substitute to get invested in a character, and while I didn't vibe with her as much as Makoto, she wasn't too bad. I intend to play P4 Golden at some point, so I'll see if I feel differently then.

I ultimately choose Takemi, and Hifumu is also my very top choice , but I feels like every girl is solid , but maybe , just maybe I feel more toward friendship relationship with Ann . As for male cast I wouldn't say I hate Ryuji , but more like annoyed by his impulsive nature other than that he's a pretty good friend to have . I'm indifferent toward Yosuke he's pretty chill , while I can say that I hate Teddy and Junpei . Would love a video on male cast too .

Not too familiar with Fuuka, but I really like Yukiko (and her goofy laugh), and Makoto is easily my favorite P5 character. She's got a lot going on for a kid, I find her quiet struggle to navigate it all compelling, which btw makes her Johana awakening all the more of a payoff. You know Makoto's put a lot of thought into whatever she decides she wants to say. If she does emote more obviously, then you know it's because she's THAT mad/shocked/upset about that thing. I also found her behavior around Sae versus Futaba pretty interesting too. She's very much characteristically little sister to Sae, in demeanor, but very "big sister"--almost motherly--to Futaba. Makoto's got all the layers. She's an onion. I love that girl. The Priestess girls aren't boring at all to me.

i never realised that two of the three priestes girls are my favorite female in the cast i always thought yukiko was a pretty interesting character and fuuka is basically my dream girl i would love a girl who rather stays home and relax than go out to some crowded area and she is also not as extreme in being a introvert as some other girls where she wouldn't mind going somewhere with me she is also just generally pleasant to be around. i always thought that fuuka especially was pretty underrated.

i don't find yukiko boring, but i do think makoto and fuuka are. i'm also a shy introvert who struggles with being unapologetically myself. yukiko's just a lot cooler to me because we get to see her shadow self. that is her true, unfiltered self. i find the whole Princess wanting to be saved by her prince Chie so fascinating. she also has so many more goofy moments than the others. Yukiko can be silly like Futaba a lot of the time. her flaws are a lot more out-there for me which makes her so much more entertaining

I can’t speak for Makoto cuz I don’t like her, but Fuuka is enjoyable in regards to her development being entirely on her own. She isn’t a Makoto or a Yukiko in that they only come to the realization of who they are and what they want to be cuz of the player or Persona team. Fuuka protects herself and others, forgives ppl, befriends them, and resolves conflicts on her own. She pushes herself and grows and learns. But I can 100% why that would be “boring”, since the player isn’t an active participant in their journey. And we don’t get to see Fuuka hurt as much as the others. But it also makes her growth more natural and admirable. The introvert pushed herself and became strong all on her own. Glad to see someone like Yukiko tho, she’s so underrated lol

I never thought any of the priestest characters were boring, but I did find that Makoto in both her pre-joining the team and Confidant interactions suffered from some seriously bad writing (Ann's Confidant and Yusuke before he joined the team had the same problem).

yeah they are kinda boring people. not necessarily unrelatable or unrealistic just not exciting. like mitsuru is cool and misterious with a tragic past, futaba is a gamer neet, naoto is an actual detective, ann is almost a bro and an actual model, chie is a tomboy that does kong fu, and the priestess girls just kind of go to school, do their homework and chill. fuuka is my waifu but that's probably because I'm just as boring :D

I love Makoto. First time in a palace she easily accepts the reality in-front of her and leads the party effectively. Constantly tries to be an asset to the team. [spoiler] Even before joining us she was trying her best to be a good student president, tackling phantom thieves investigation at the school, and counseling for the students despite being labeled as a goodie two-shoes who only cared about a good letter of recommendation. All the while being pressured by Sae and the principal's expectations and not being allowed to live her life, be a kid and make mistakes. After joining us; Makoto could finally live purposefully; hacking Sae's laptop files or taking charge of mediating with Akechi. Makoto is always self-sacrificing on the frontlines not just for her friends but even the students who talk bad about her.

Wasn't expecting this quality of an explanation honestly. I don't think I ever really needed to understand the values to understand that they had very real issues to be stressed out about. Nor do I think extroversion really matters in the way of judging a character besides the fact that extroverted characters are going to have way more opportunities to shine. That said, I also already had certain inklings about cultural values since I ended up doing research way back when I was originally playing P4 and going through Kanji's dungeon.

I only know P3 characters enough lore-wise to have an opinion but, as a Romanian girl, Fuuka is my favourite of almost all characters. I do relate to her the most, yes, but I also just like shy characters inadvertedly kmaybe because I myself am so perhaps?). My country is hardly a stranger to parents wanting something from their children in terms of career. I was very lucky in those terms as my father only wanted for me to choose, but the majority of my classmates hardly had that choice.

I like Makoto so far. Didn't find her boring, but I'm also not super far yet. Just halfway through her confidant, and probably about halfway through the vanilla P5 story. So can't have much of a final assessment. I did think the writing so far has tried to oversell her intelligence in some pretty silly ways. (Most egregious was knowing what a ballista is lol.. but there were some others that were basically on par.) But in the end, I ultimately do like her thus far. I appreciate her concern for the other students (although yeah it kinda is something that she sees as her duty as pres), and I mean I always like smart even if its kinda oversold. 😄 Yukiko was probably my favorite girl in P4, at least on the first playthrough. Marie.. just forget it lol. Didn't like that char at all. Chie, I'm not really a fan of too high energy, but it's not like i disliked her. Rise just came off pretty weird to me the first playthrough. However... in what is very relevant for your channel-I was learning more about Xenogears and one character who is kind of a Madonna figure but also the romantic interest, and it made me connect all those ways purity is/has been venerated-like vestal virgins, clergy and such in western society and idols in eastern society. I didn't have any idea that was the expectation for pop stars in the east (even tho we kinda had a similar thing here with Britney Spears), and it made me think back on Rise in retrospect with a newfound appreciation for the suppression/forbidden nature that it was going for. Not sure if I will ever replay P4G, but I know I would look at Rise in a different way if I did, and it makes me wonder what else I might've been missing for the other chars. Going back to Yukiko though, I was able to understand the whole expectations put on her about carrying on the family tradition angle with just what I knew at the time.

Re: Makoto, her confidant is generally agreed to be one of the worst in P5 even by people who like her, so I wouldn't judge her by that. Just keep playing the main story. Fuuka and yukiko are my favorite female characters on the teams they are apart of. I drelate to both because I actually can't cook well myself. Like fuuka I can't sometimes burn something as easy as a frozen pizza and as a funny story I actually tried using a timer once in an indepent living program for the blind and visually impaired. My ex and I were tasked with preparing frozen pizzas and I set a timer on my phone at the time. Sadly I had never done that before and accidentally set the timer for almost a day long when I meant to set it for minutes. I actually want to learn to cook but my parents epuld rather just give me guidance by kinda distant feeling instruction. With yukiko I relate to her in I'm not sure what goes into a lot of dishes that are made from scratch and that is very overwhelming to me.

Let's be honest, when it comes to Makoto, there are those that have legit reasons for disliking her and then there are others that simply dislike her for her popularity. These are the ones that'll say "she's overhyped". Like dude, people like what they like 🤷🏻‍♀️ if you don't understand the reason people like her, doesn't mean everyone thinks like you. And these people are usually the loudest too 😂 Anyways, I think she's great. ^_^ She was my first choice with Vanilla P5 and I don't think it's ever gonna change.

Speaking of Major Arcana, and this is more on trails Would you say the dominions are based on the major arcana just like the enforcers? They're shown to be foils and for example: Kevin would be Hierophant, being the fifth, and his stigma inducing trauma is very much connected to institution, and how becoming a dominion involves him subverting the line of command (if you know what I mean you know what I mean) There are also others who would be the Strength and the Hermit who fit really well, who I am avoiding to mention because not everyone has played Azure and Cold Steel III

Forgive me if im mistaken here, but while I've always related to yukiko and makoto, I feel like the society hammering the nail that sticks out doesn't get shown in the rest of the game. Like yosuke gets beat on by the town, but he decides that their opinion isn't what matters and he's ok with that. Similar with ryuji as well. And the player character faces the low point but they always rise above and everyone roots for them, even though they are outcasts or different.

A perfect example of just how big America is, is that where I live there was very much so a general pressure to have perfect grades and excel. It felt like my entire self worth was attached to my ability to perform in school. I still disliked Makotos SL because her resolution is to become a cop. Something that P5, Royal, AND Strikers make clear is inherently corrupt between the intense trauma Joker goes through and Zenkichi’s big moment of defying his superior to do what he knows is right (and eventually to resolve his conflict with Akane.) I really like Fukka though. I played as FeMC and being able to form a cooking club and work with her while she accepts who she is was very heartfelt imo.

I honestly think that most people who find at least Makoto trying to save Eiko unrealistic don’t really get the point. This is an actual problem in Japan because most people either don’t notice, don’t care, or just don’t know how they can help. To see Makoto be the person Eiko needed was amazing.
