Are these the WORST oil pastels I've ever used? What do you think about Pentel oil pastels?
This drawing was a headache LITTERALLY! I had so many people suggest Pentel oil pastels and I was very excited! I don't think I've ever used these before. Trust me I would've definitely remembered the smell! I've used Cray Pa's before which are almost identical to Pentel and still love them. however these do not compete at all. They were definitely a let down and the smell actually made me dizzy. I hope this is just a bad batch of these oil pastels because I wanted to like these so bad, but they are hard to blend, you can't really layer, they barley have any pigment and were overall just sad. The outcome of the drawing wasn't horrible, but still just doesn't compete with the other oil pastels I've reviewed and not worth the headache . These literally made me ill. I even let them sit, open over night and they still smell. Please let me know if you have different opinions about these, I'd love to hear what you think. I know these are just the student grade and they have an Artist Quality however they are expensive and If they smell anything like these I would return them in a heart beat. Also sorry for being so bitter towards the end I literally had such a bad headache after this drawing I know I'm super dramatic, but dang....the smell is uncalled for haha!

What do you think about these oil pastels? My experience was not the best as you saw. Sorry if these are your favorite oil pastels. I explain more in the description, but I know the dryness might be from age. I researched the smell and turns out a lot of people have complained. Natural gas is the only way I can describe it. What should I try next?

These are the only oil pastels I have because they're so cheap haha. They're ok but they don't blend too well especially when there's lots of layers. The packaging is different in the UK Instagram is @by_emilyy btw 😉

It's not just you, they are a harder pastel in general (though I wonder if they are different in Japan). I think they are better used for underdrawing and hard edges/lines. A brand I would recommend if you can get a hold of them at the Caran Dache NeoPastels. They are admittedly not very big (slightly thicker than the Pentals), but they are much creamer (like the Mungyo or Sennelier pastels). Don't confuse the NeoPastels for the NeoColor 1 and NeoColor 2, NeoColor 1 are more wax-based and the NeoColor 2 are watersoluable.

Agree with the smell, the worst smelling art supplies ever ,,, mine were also dry and couldn't later . Maybe they are just too cheap? I've used less expensive ones too but these might be the worst

Oh, those are not the worst, believe me. When I started using Pentel Oil Pastels, I felt like it was a blessing. I used to use another brand that had much bigger sticks but they were so hard and impossible to blend. I admit that they do smell bad, but they don't bother me THAT much.

Can we just talk about how TALENTED you are?! Not only do you use unconventional colors in your pieces, you have an abstract form and you just wing it on color placement yet it always comes out looking so coherent and recognizable! Skills!! ❤️

Ikr, he's incredibly gifted, and the way he bends the colour to his will is fascinating to watch. I will never use oil pastels in my lifetime, but I appreciate colourful, dramatic art, which his work is. He is amazing for instilling his work with oodles of character and life. I absolutely love it!

I'm actually surprised by your experience with these because they're what I always use and never had the problems you described. Then again, I get them from Amazon, so they're likely always a fresh batch. I always had a hard time with pastels until I found your channel. Just by watching you work, I've picked up so many effective techniques! I actually recently sold a pastel/colored pencil drawing, and got my 1st ever commission for another! Thank you for doing what you do 💜

I have a different variation of that product, they are very creamy for me, maybe it depends on the variation and the factory responsible for creation. Nonetheless it was a good experience for me. They do blend very good for me. Yes they do not layer very well they just sometimes blend. I have the 36? Pieces? Maybe it was the certain product that you bought because I do enjoy their blending very well, disappointing to hear for you to have such a bad experience. But i think you shoukd give it another try, that may be an old stock as not many people buy that 50 pieces, so maybe that.

Same here! I got a white box with a gray line that is at least 2 years old, and they don't smell bad at all... They are not the best, but i would say they're ok, creamy and blend relatively well, i always thought i was just not good at using them. Maybe different boxes have different manufacturers, idk :(

Pentel is awesome. Yes there are better oil pastels out there for sure. But they are very very expensive. I would definitely recommend pentel for the beginners especially.

@@imaginewolf4674 Definitely! They are definitely not very good for mixing too much color but if you are a beginner and dont want to spend too much money. They are good to buy. I made a very realistic apple with these, but when I wanted to make a hot cup of tea, it did not turn out bad but gave me a very hard time blending and also I felt the outcome would be so much better with less effort with better pastels. So you need to just choose wisely what to draw with them. Not too much blending and you are fine :) P.S. I did not try it with baby oil. But I'll definitely give it a go.

@@BlackBeanCMS Not the OP, but I tried the 24-colors that I borrowed from my gf, and they didn't smell at all! I dunno if you had a bad batch, or different countries get it from different factories. I'm also from Brasil, and I can confirm that Pentel is the only reasonable option, cost-wise. Any other brand is like 2, 3, 5 times expensive - even crayola :/

I use these oil pastels all the time. I’d say they’re some of the worst quality pastels, but... I enjoy using them. There’s something about the texture and the consistency of the pigment, while really shoddy, feel interesting to me. They come off as a bit more translucent sometimes and when layered I feel like a get something unique and different that I don’t quite get from the better quality pastels. I try to utilize what I feel are the strengths of the product y’know? If I want to get a different result, like something that layers really opaque or blends really well, then I have to use a different type of pastel. Also I never really notice a bad smell from them lol I like your drawing though came out really nice.

Pentel were the first oil pastels I ever bought, and OH BOY it was different when I bought some Mungyo Gallery. Cannot even believe I drew so many pictures with those Pentels now.

Have you tried heating the pastels up on a mug warmer and using them? Like you heat the mug warmer up and then touch the tip on to heat it a little and then use it on the paper. The color is amazing and the mixing experience is better

I've definitely used some horrid oil pastels in my day. Artist's Loft oil pastels are just dry crayons. I don't think I've ever used any that smell bad though. That's new!

@@EmeralEden How did you end up liking them? It's possible the ones I have were just a cheap version of them because they came in a big set of their stuff I got as a gift. I found a new use for them though. They're kind of like colored charcoal or nice chalk, so I'm ok with that.

Ok can I just tell you... I just started to play with oil pastels and bought this exact set because I think it was $6 on sale. I thought it would be good for a first set, and they served their purpose. That said... I agree with you 💯 about the stank! Good Lord! I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am to have found your channel!! Not only are you an AMAZING artist, but the funniest one I’ve ever seen. I use Pentel and I agree that they are too thin and I want them to blend better. I do like them more than Crayola though. I found Crayola to be dry and too crumbly. Sorry about the stank!! Sounds like a bad box!

I feel like there was either a formula change or just a bad batch along the line because I got a stinky batch and nowhere else had mentioned a smell before. You may have gotten an older one or just been lucky not to get a stink box.

My brother bought ones when he was on college (2016) and now (2021) still doesn't smell like gasoline. So maybe they change something, gotta buy other ones because they are cheap.

I'm a beginner who uses oil and soft pastels and I had heard such a good reviews about Pentel Box, that I purchased them as my very first oil pastel box, and I was devastated! They're dry, they stink, they break easily, and I can't even blend them or do the layering. They gave me depression for a few weeks and I just kind of gave up on using oil pastel in general.

These were the first oil pastels I ever bought and I think I got a good batch, but I do agree the smell and the size is not the best. But I love all the colors you get! I’ve been on the hunt for the 28 pack of crayola oil pastels and they are literally sold out everywhere here in the Bay Area! I might have to buy them online. I dragged out all of my oil pastels tonight and decided to actually try to figure out how to use them. I've had CrayPas for decades - maybe since the 60s - but they just took up space. I came here after watching Lindsey, the Frugal Crafter's video on oil pastels. I've had my box for 3 years, but because I thought I was ordering something else, when they came, I didn't even do more than look at them. They remained encased in the plastic on top and bottom. Tonight, I was amazed how much they smelled like an old garage - the kind where you used to go to get your car fixed. I'm assuming the oil is petroleum based, too. They aren't too hard - at least they are softer than the ancient CrayPas. I flipped them out onto a tray so most of the sticks would be exposed to air and I'm hoping it will dissipate.

First of all I want to say congratulations! For me, it took a while to be comfortable with myself. It can be a struggle but be proud that you are finally wanting living your truth! Unfortunately, I really couldn't give you much advice. Everyone's life experience and environment is different. I was 20 when I came out and I was still terrified. I will say this, only you will know when you are ready. I suggest you make sure you are in a safe space. And no matter what be proud of who you are! The fear of hiding the real you won't last forever! Good luck to you friend! ☺️

This exact pastel is the reason I have hated HATED oil pastel for the longest time ( started when I joined poster making contest in elementary, and this is the one they let me used)... We have such highly scented ( mostly weird) rough dry pastels in india, smaller in size and miss pigments !!😂 I was enjoying you getting irritated, it was like me missing great brand products herein 😭

I've been waiting for this because I have these. Edit: I've heard a few reviews saying they smell but I think it might be for only a few shades because it seems to mostly happen for people that try the 48/50 packs but not much for anyone with 24 or less colors. And I bought myself the Classpack (since it was on sell for $27) so I can go ham and just learn but there still is no strong smell from mine.

These were my first oil pastels back in 1994 when I was a teen and my mother kindly bought me them. I could never use them for the same reason, but they still had that sentimental value to me. But they made me absolutely hate oil pastels until I found your channel and tried also the Caran D`Ache wax pastels Neocolor II that made me get curious about the oil pastels again. Now I just love them and after watching your review of the Mungyo, I purchased the 48 pack. They are a dream. Now I use oil pastels for my children`s illustrations and the amazing soft chalk pastels for realistic paintings. Thank you for that. I have these and they are actually really soft and creamy but they get used up super quick. I’ll probably get other pastels in the future. I didn’t get much smell but if I do lean in a bit closer to the art of container they definitely have a smell!

After watching your Sennelier video, I got inspired and ordered my very first Sennelier set. I just got a small set with metallic colors. I’m not a pastel artist but I absolutely love your art and I have to tell you that I really enjoy that set. They feel like Chanel lipstick. Amazing. I bought my Pentels Oil Pastels from my local charity store; they’ve already been used but not that much, and honestly as a beginner I really like them. They’re nice and creamy, and some are a little harder which really helps me with blending. I’m no expert, but I’d definitely suggest them for beginners. Plus the smell is kinda nostalgic for me, reminds me of being a kid I love it 😅

These are the only oil pastels I have ever used and the smell was one of the reasons I didn’t try other brands because I assumed they all smelled like that.

I have these, used them twice, and never used them again. That smell was too much, mine were dry, and they WOULD NOT BLEND. Never again lemme tell you😂

You got me into oil pastels and these are the only brand I have ever tried. I've run into the crumbly, not blending problem as well so I'm glad it's not just me lol

I'm amazed you were able to make such neat drawing with these. I've bought it to learn how to use pastels and I can barely use it at all, it's just too dry. Good too know pastels are not supposed to have this texture (or smell).

I found some old Pentels in my stash and I'm using them to establish background color and I have ordered more (still waiting for delivery) because of price and I'll let you know what happens--I'm a little nervous now--didn't have any stink with these old Pentels. I got Crayolas on watching you and they are fine and dandy. I would like you to give an opinion on Van Gogh oil pastels. I use to get individual pieces from my local art stores and now they are hard to find--they are made by Royal Talens. You're great. ro.

I got a bad headache from these when I had to use them for drawing II for the colour portion of the class. I had sennellier but Janice Whiting didn't let me use them, I remember having a headache that entire week, it was like deep behind my eyes it was terrible.

First time I used oil pastels was from Pentel and I simply hated... I thought it was because I'd never used before, but after this video I think the quality of theses oil pastels must have contributed!

I've had a set of 25 since 2014 - mine are not stinky though. The quality is... not great, but I'm only a beginner in oil pastels so it doesn't really bother me! Maybe I just don't know better haha. I also like to do smaller artworks so the pastel size works for me :) Happy 2021! Looking forward to more reviews!

As someone who used these all of high school I totally agree with the things you were saying about these. I always felt they were dry and not made for blending or layering 😬

I've been using these pastels for nearly a decade - they were what was available in the campus shop at my college and I just stuck with them because they were affordable and worked pretty well for me - and I have to say, I've never really noticed a smell? I'm in the UK though, so idk if maybe the American version of them is different somehow.
