@Artem Zagaynov while I don't agree with what OG replied with (because I am aware of the majority that heterosexuality represents) it is still hypocritical to tell gay people to not assume someone's sexuality in a piece of media and then immediately assume they are straight, especially with cases where they keep making homosexual references or have them in homoerotic scenes, which is what happens with most (cannot say all bc I haven't seen them all) of the couples in the videos that AreTheyGay makes

In my head, when Troy comes back, he realizes he loved Abed in a gay way and he still does. Abed has always known this, but he was content with their previous unofficial love because according to his calculations it would be best if he were to let Troy figure out his love for him on his own and not to tell him. However, it doesn't go back to normal immediately; (obviously) they've both changed and its been a long time since they saw eachother, but they do find that bond again and 3 years later they are married.

I’m never going to get over when Troy in the Freaky Friday episode, acting like Abed, starts stimming with his hands. We rarely see Abed stimming but that means that he openly stims around Troy 🥺. Also, their handshake comes from a video Troy saw but Abed thought Troy created it. There’s just something so wholesome to me about Troy watching a video about ‘cool things to do with your friends’ and being excited to show his new friend. I don’t know if I necessarily ship them (because I’m autistic and really struggle understanding the difference between close friends and people in a relationship) but I hope to have what they have one day :’-).

Me: We have to normalize close and affectionate male friendships without romanticizing them. It's important that men are able to have close friendships like girls without their sexuality or intentions being questioned. Also me: We have to normalize functional homosexual relationships without just putting them down as friendships.
@Lisa_Flowers

It is entirely possible for writers to write male relationships that aren't filled with subtext or gay jokes that make people feel inclined to view those relationships as romantic. That isn't out of nowhere lol, queer people are not necessarily just reading romance out of thin air (especially when a lot of people see it - sometimes it's a lesser known pairing that people headcanon, that's different). It's possible to write close male friendships that have overt affection and care, without constant gay jokes or subtext but it seems rare for writers to do that (and the reason is homophobic gay jokes and queer baiting probably lol). Also, I don't think people making assumptions about a straight man's sexuality because of how close he is to his friend is really as harmful as people make it sound. Like yeah if it's done in an invasive and constant way, that's bad. But if two men have a close friendship that is somewhat ambiguous I don't see the harm in that friendship being occasionally interpreted as potentially romantic ( _especially_ with fictional characters), like romance and friendship are both valid interpretations and also constantly happen to male-female friendships in the same situation. Yet no one is complaining when a friendship between a man and woman is interpreted by some people as potentially romantic lol. Someone thinking you or some situation you're in is gay when in actuality it isn't is not any where near as harmful as people make it seem and men are less likely to see it as a threat unless they have some internalised homophobia that relks them being gay is bad and is it is inherently awful for people to think you are gay. The normalisation of non-sexual non-romantic affection, of friendship, is important. But to me that should start first and foremost with m/f relationships and friendships, because straight romance is already heavily represented in the media. This is one of the reasons it sometimes comes across as bad faith when people criticize queer pairings like Troy and Abed in defense of 'male friendships because they rarely seem to care about representation of friendship unless potential mlm couples are brought up lol. Like where is that energy with m/f friendships and m/m friendships at any other point in time?

I would love the community movie to have The Dean fully admit his crush on Jeff in an emotionally honest non-joky manner and have jeff just politely turn him down so that they move and become a healthy platonic thing and not The Dean being a predatory person in a position of power over Jeff his employee. You could get a good scene out of it and have their relationship evolve. Jeff and the Dean being friends could be fun to watch, they both have a flair for fashion and they both are desperate for approval, and they both love and see the value of Greendale more than any other character. Also, this has nothing to do with Jeff being or not being the, it has to do with him clearly not being into Dean and not cool with his unwanted advances.

i mean i agree but people also read homosexuality into everything. like i wouldn't say britta, annie, or really any of them are 100% straight or gay. like you don't _know_ know, because there's not much romantic subtext for any of them. but people call homosexuality on feminine/emotional men and shit and thats just kinda toxic. i get it if you wanna hc someone as gay for comfort, but saying that they definitely are gay just bc theyre close with each other is not great. their relationship is purely platonic, as far as we can tell. thats it.

@@burdlo4687 OK my original reply to this has entirely disappeared?? But to clarify: 1. I think straight readings of these characters are totally valid. My main issue is when people ignore textual evidence and pretend it doesn't exist because it doesn't fit with their (heterosexual) interpretation. 2. I definitely don't think Troy and Abed (or anyone in the show) is gay just because they're close (or because they have feminine traits). I think they *might* be gay because their relationship is heavily coded as romantic. As explained in the video.
@burdlo4687
@burdlo4687 3 жыл бұрын
@@theladynim2 it isn't coded as romantic, though. the point of their friendship is that they're extremely close. they say they love each other, hug each other, and jokingly plan their life out years in the future. that isn't romantic coding. romantic coding is different. it's deeper, and it's _romantic._ like. for some reason 2 friends who are close are considered to be coded as romantic? i've had a few friends who i loved and cuddled with, but they were just friends. that was never romantic, and it probably seemed romantic to close minded people with too many expectations, but it was not romantic unless it became romantic, which is very different. you can ship them and want them to be together, but their relationship is not "coded" as romantic. johnlock was coded as romantic (im still pissed about that one) because everyone assumed they were dating throughout the show, and it's implied that you'd want them to date. trobed isn't "coded" as romantic. that doesn't mean you can't ship them, but the coding isn't there.
@theladynim2
@theladynim2 3 жыл бұрын
@@burdlo4687 Did you... Watch the video? Cos I'm not gonna re-explain the whole thing to you. But to put it as plainly as possible the writers *intentionally* draw parallels between Troy and Abed's relationship and explicitly romantic relationships over and over and over again. Their scenes are full of romantic tropes. They frequently make references to romantic films and TV shows when talking about their friendship. All that is romantic coding. Now does it mean that the writers thought of them as gay? No probably not. It's done for comedic effect mostly. The show absolutely wants you to see them as just two very close friends and that's totally valid. That's canon. But to say there's no hint of potential romance even vaguely implied there? it's just straight up not true.

"It's a friend you've known so well, and for so long you just let it be with you, and it needs to be okay for it to have a bad day or phone in a day, and it needs to be okay for it to get on a boat with LeVar Burton and never come back. Because eventually, it all will." Abed talking about the two loves of his life.

I always got the feeling that Abed is fully aware that the two of them are in love, but he also enjoys their friendship and so he is alright waiting as long as he needs to for Troy to realize it himself

Is Abed on the spectrum? Because he seems like he's nerodiverse and I love that shit
@ktm3636

yup! it’s canon that he is. :) have you seen the show? if not, i recommend. abed is my favorite neurodivergent and autistic representation, i’ve never seen a character who resonated with me more.

Yeah, it says it a few times, it helps, I’m on the spectrum and he’s one of the best portrayals of autism, a 2009 sitcom character is one of the best portrayals of autism. People really don’t know how to portray us.

May I also bring up how in season 1 episode 14 Abed gets on stage and does his own tap dance routine by himself. I think that ties into him being comfortable with himself and maybe even his sexuality?? Idk I just thought of that

The moment that made me cry more than any other moment on Television was the episode when Troy left, and I only watched after YEARS of putting it off because of how upset I was by the idea of Troy leaving Abed. It's the only fictional relationship I can think of that I've felt that strongly about.

I would recommend you watch it. It can be a tad insensitive at times and it gets off on a rough foot in season one but late season one and 2&3 it is pure found family goodness and shenanigans. 5&6 are pretty good as well but skip four. We need to recruit enough people to get #sixseasonsandamovie

Don't skip season 4. Its just 14 episodes and it's still mostly entertaining and sometimes pretty good even though it's by far the weakest season

@@georgevelis4651 I sort of meant don't judge the show by season 4 and keep going. It does have some good episodes(notably the thanksgiving one and the freaky friday spoof). It just isn't Community, y'know?

one big scene i think would have been worth mentioning was during abed’s birthday diner with jeff, season 2 episode 18, abed says that he created character for himself “chad” and how as chad he experienced “my first true love falling for my best friend”.

i think troy is sexually attracted to women but not romantically/emotionally and attracted to men in both ways. it makes sense with how his relationship with britta didn’t work out, his obsessions over male celebrities, him being confused about his identity and his feelings about abed (of course). abed seems straight to me tho. he had rachel and he’s attracted to annie. same goes for jeff
