The 2011 Canucks did not have forward depth. It was a 3 line team for the majority of the year and playoffs. The only time they could play more than 3 lines was the time between the trade deadline and Manny's eye injury. The had the best top line, best 2nd line center, best checking 3rd line, and worst 4th line in the NHL

Not enough love for Mattias Ohlund, who was much better defensively and much more consistent overall than Jovo ever was. I'll never forget game 7 against the Flames in 2004 when Nazzy and Cooke bailed us out with 15 seconds left in the 3rd, and Jovo's just cheering his head off from the box. That moment in the box, to me, really encompasses how Jovo's time with the Canucks panned out.

I do think the cup is gonna stay in the western conference again this year.

Expectations are the thief of joy. I think part of what feels different about this team is that we had much lower expectations going into the season. We're surprised by the amazing output of some of these lines -- Garland and Joshua together is magical. We did not know how good Hughes and Hronek would be together. There have been a lot of surprises.. I mean, look at how improved our defensive play has been this year. BUT... impressive teams are not promised anything in the playoffs. The worse team has won STARTLINGLY often. There are a million different factors -- playing like you have something to lose, or injuries, or just hitting the post 11 times in a game... a million things can happen. And, unfortunately, how far you get into the playoffs determines how you'll be remembered, even if you had an incredible regular season. So I would never dare hazard a guess about how this team will be remembered, but I will say that I have been LOVING watching hockey for the first time in a VERY long time... it has been such a treat to feel that pang of excitement the entire day before the game starts. I love it... and I'm going to cherish it right NOW, rather than worrying about anything in the future. 2011 taught me to just enjoy the current moment for what it is, because you're not guaranteed ANYTHING a moment into the future.

The key is their depth and coaching. I love how Rick Tocchet's been handling the fatigue management on this 7 game road trip so far. He's been rotating players in and out and rolling 18 skaters as needed to keep his players as fresh as possible for such a brutal road trip. He also is showing he's not too proud to owning his mistakes like separating the Lotto Line in December, and willing to reverse them and get back to what was working earlier for us. The team also seems to be responding well to the few times they've had to face adversity and not let it tear them down, but rather seem to take it as a challenge to raise to the occasion. It's almost what they defeat makes them stronger, and what defeats them, they learn from and it makes them stronger. The only other Canucks team I can think of that had that capacity to battle through adversity so well was the 2010-2011 team, which had a huge bit of adversity about 2/3 of the way through the season when they had about 10-12 injuries at the same time on JUST Defensemen ALONE! Of their veteran defensemen, ONLY Edler was healthy during the worst of that stretch, and for about a 10 game span, the next most experienced blueliner was rookie Chris Tanev, who was a mid season call up for injury replacement who never went back down after his performance left Alain Vineault with no choice but to make him a permanent fixture from then until the day he left due to lack of cap room from those Benning-Aqualini Anchor Contracts. The rest were all basically the entire blueline corps of our AHL affiliate and I think even some from even farther down the totem pole then AHL. During that 10 game stretch, at least 2-3 of our 6 man blueline corps were most definitely NOT NHL talent, yet somehow each of those never will be's managed to rotate around playing at least a few games among them as if they belonged in the NHL. I remember that stint was so bad even several of our 2nd String Injury call ups themselves got injured, which was where we got 3nd and 4th string players from even below the AHL level playing for the Canucks for a time. Then one by one, our veterans started to heal and return and eventually only Tanev was left from all those kids.

I've adopted the Canucks as my second favourite team (my western team so to speak). This is the best Canucks team I have seen but the playoffs are still some time away. They definitely could go all the way but there are no guarantees naturally. The NHL first round is one of the wildest things in sports and it seems every year there's a can't miss team that gets its stick handed to them. I'm cautiously optimistic for the Canucks. Having said that, Edmonton and Winnipeg still are quite good as well and would provide different challenges. But I do love seeing THG's restrained excitement.

@@gordm3527 true but the Canucks were good and building for a few years before 2011. Also they lost to Boston in game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. Only two teams get there and only one wins. 2011 Canucks went as far as they could and fell one game short, so your off the cuff comment holds no water other than you are probably a Bruin fan. Your comment is simplistic at best. This year's team is playing extremely well but we are half way through the season with no playoff success yet and this is coming off a decade of not so good. I have been following the Canucks to a tee since 1977. I also have recently been thinking if this current edition of the Canucks is the best team ever in their history, I would have to say yes! The 2011 team was very good with Sedin, Kesler and Malhotra down the middle, but they never had a player like Quinn Hughes! Miller and Petterson are both skilled and not easy to intimidate. The Defense is one of the biggest in the NHL, the 3rd line is as good as any, and Demko with De Smith is as good a tandem as any in the NHL right now. Tocchet is pushing all the right buttons and the team is full of confidence like at no other time! It's exciting to think of where this edition of the Canucks can go, and they can still add one or two players that can make a difference without sacrificing much of the current line-up. Let the good times Roll!!

Keep warm Shannon! I too live in a Lower Mainland house that just causes heat to evaporate as soon as it gets within 5 feet of a wall. It’s definitely colder on your side of the Lower Mainland/in the Valley so I hope you and your family can get through this safely and without so much discomfort. Don’t worry about the set, I think most of your viewers should understand you’re a human being first, their entertainment second. I think the 91-92 team is very impressive (tho I was not yet alive at the time so I’ve only been able to watch some sporadic games from that season), but man did the 94 team *show up* in the playoffs. Even that final Game 7 against the Rangers, they were never truly out of that game. They showed up to compete, other than prior and later iterations of the team that were ghosts in game 7. I think the current team is deeper and more defensively capable than the 2011 team. I like the current bottom 6 much better than 10/11, bonus points for not having guys like Raffi Torres or Rome on the team. I also think most of our star players are just entering their prime and we haven’t seen their peak yet so it’s exciting that they’re playing so well and still have room to grow and mature. I don’t know if our current tandem is better than Luongo/Schneider (I’d say no right now but playoff performance might change that) or what we saw out of Markstrom/Demko in the bubble had we been able to hold onto both, because I really think Demko’s god tier performance in that Vegas series was him announcing that he was gonna be a Top 10 (minimum) goalie in the league from then on, barring injury. Obviously management picked the right guy to hold on to, but I do wonder if the Canucks could have held it together enough to squeak into the playoffs that next season if we had Markstrom/Demko as a 1A/1B tandem (and practically the entire team NOT getting a covid variant would also have helped).

Since this is the first year the core has really come together and had success, I'd still go with the 2011 Canucks being the best. That said: The 2011 team didn't have anyone like Quinn Hughes (well no Canucks team has) and defensive depth was a serious issue in the 2011 playoffs -- which is my main worry for this team too, though honestly I think the defensive depth is better than 2011 with the recent additions, especially with Juulsen stepping up his game -- the fact that Aaron Rome getting suspended was a turning point (imo) in the 2011 Boston series is telling, I also always thought Keith Ballard was a bit of a defensive liability that year. The Sedins, as much as I love them, didn't have quite the 'break through' effect that Miller, Boeser, Pettersson have and I think that's most apparent in the 2011 Nashville series, where I kind of feel like it was a goaltender battle and Kesler put the offense on his back and the Sedins were pretty quiet (Pekka Rinne was also spectacular in that series, though so was Luongo and as you say, the good games are forgotten) The 3rd line. The 2011 3rd line was very good, part of the reason they made it to the finals. This 3rd line is better (halfway through at least) and is so defensively sound. Garland, Joshua, and Bluger are heroic together this year. The 2011 team 4th line was pretty mediocre and they basically rolled 3 lines. This year it's solid and can be trusted for good shifts so far. Rick Tocchet's style. I'm generally not one to put too much emphasis on a coach, but Tocchet has got them to buy into a good system and the emphasis on team defense and structure has really helped this group. I hated how Brodreau was let go, but like Tocchet's approach better. I didn't dislike Vigneault's coaching in 2011 either, but Tocchet's system seems more geared towards the playoffs. It's hard to put into words, but when I watch them play this year it seems....right....don't know how to put it. I think this team definitely has the potential to be the best team the Canucks have ever iced, but they still have to prove it. As a Canucks fan, I'm scared I have hope for a good playoff run.

Well, they are just so darn focused this year. Every line steps up when they need to step up. One thing they need to work on is their special teams. But other than that, I couldn’t ask for a better team. So fun to watch.

Demko seems like a guy less prone to getting spooked in the post-season than Luongo proved to be and I agree with Shannon in that the top 5 guys seem to have a confidence that is different from the confidence the group had back in 2011. One knock against this group is that a lot of those other teams had experience in the post season whereas this year's group really only had time in the bubble so we'll see how that confidence shows when the games matter most.

The only time we ever saw Demko in the post-season he was literally record-breaking. I wouldn’t quite call it 2021 Price level, but man 2 goals against over the course of 3 games and like 110 shots is absolutely insane. That kind of performance from a goalie can take a middling roster deep into the playoffs. If Demko performs like that and there’s a solid roster in front of him to boot? That could make for a hell of a run.

I think that this year's team's only comparable is 2011. I'm not willing to give them that crown yet, I need them to prove it against the likes of Vegas, Colorado, Boston, etc. I think one specific tie in that is pretty significant is conveniently Hronek and Ehrhoff. All teams that find success have a defenseman who can get the puck to the net. Ehrhoff was, I think, until this year the best the Canucks have had, at least in my time, at doing that. Not to take away from Quinn and what he does, by any means. Hronek is just eerily similar of the Salo/Ehrhoff role in 2011. Truthfully, I'd like to see him with a little more time on the second unit PP. I think this team is a good mix of a lot of things that made the 2011 and 2003 teams as good as they were. I've honestly been looking for something that I am not seeing from the opposition POV, but I'm seeing a lot of the same thing. Josh Yohe who covers the Pens tweeted "The Canucks are no joke" on Thursday and that made me feel a lot better about not seeing something. Someone who knows the success of the GMJR philosophy saying that about where the Canucks are made me change a lot of opinions about where the team stands. As mad as I was about the blown lead, Thursday was kind of a blood and guts win. They aren't what they were, but Pittsburgh still isn't a slouch team. They found a way to beat them against the flow of roughly 2/3 of the game. Lotta season left, but at this point, I'm feeling much better than I have since 2011. Not that the bar is set very high.

Yes, there is something that "feels" different about these Canucks. However, there are concerns outside of the Canucks when playoff time comes. First, there's Edmonton. The Oilers are on a mission and they have score to settle with Canucks for those early defeats. Bad defeats. Winnipeg want their first run deep into the playoffs. They look damn tough to score on. It's not just Connor Hellebuyck, but the defense in general. Outside the west, Toronto are starving for a cup as usual, and they are running out of years with the strong lineup they have.

I'm still super cautious on them because like you said, they can easily fall off a cliff and it wouldn't be surprising to anyone (although it is starting to feel like they are for real the past few weeks). In 2011 it would be a shock for them to lose a game and they were just built so well with enough depth that injuries could be managed. These days it's not really a shock if they lose, in fact i'm still mystified how the few additions/subtractions they made excelled them into the top 5 in the league compared to last season.

The Canucks team this year doesn't feel quite as dominant as the 2011 team, and yet at the same time they feel like a team that could finally get the job done. They aren't outshooting their opponents every game, and yet they make very few mistakes. You can see there's a real thought process going on every time a Canuck gets the puck. Instead of quickly moving it to another player, they all use the time available to make the right decision before moving the puck. There's just no panic at all with the team this year. Maybe that's the difference they needed.

7:25 What was LEFT of the roster, anyway. The team that made it to the finals was a shell of the team that entered the playoffs. I mean, Samuelsson was gone by a few games into the second round, MayRay BROKE his BACK early in the finals, Ehrhoff had a bad knee (I think?), Salo was undoubtedly out before the end of the finals (he played 21 playoff games that season), Hank had a beat up shoulder (I think?), Kesler was down to one hip, Hammer was hurt, Glass, Ballard (oh we loved him eh? lol) were possibly injured (these were really just support players). And Lu... Well, it's been said that had the team played better in front of him, he would have played better too. Maybe he had The Shining playing over and over in his head by the finals. Who cares. It IS the nature of the playoffs that at least one team will be pretty beaten up by the time they get to the finals. I'm not complaining. I'm not even taking anything away from the Bruins. In fact, in much the same way that LA and STL won their cups, the Bruins were on a good upswing while the Canucks had already blown their load before they got to the finals. The team that got them deep into the playoffs wasn't there anymore. That's hockey. That's just the way it is. Hell, what happened to the Bruins LAST year in the playoffs? Exactly. It happens. You move on to the next season and hope things are different. That's why I hope the Canucks THIS season aren't gassed as a team by the start of the playoffs. If game management/ice time management goes as planned, they should do pretty well. 9:58 It's not quite the same league as it was 12-14 years ago (scoring is up, right?), but to have 3 guys on the team pushing for 100pts each (plus one who COULD hit 90pts) and probably two 40+ goal scorers (possibly 3), this is a more scary team than the 2011 team. Might argue a more balanced team, but there's a lot of little things that could argue against that either way. 11:15 This time, it feels like the Canucks are the team getting into everyone elses' heads. The goals against the Rangers the other night showed just how quickly the Canucks can capitalize on the smallest mistakes. Coming into a game with that info, you start second guessing yourself and that's when more mistakes happen. 13:02 There's another reason this team has been good and I refuse to say why (the hockey gods are listening). But I'll say this: It's interesting how changing the training staff may have had something to do with it. Could be totally coincidental. Just sayin'.
@CarlForde
@CarlForde 5 ай бұрын
I don't think it's a coincidence. Canucks have a history of injuries. Top guys playing below their potential because they're hurting. Saw that with Petey earlier this year. Started out gangbusters then was hurt and his production fell off. He seems ok now. So it will be interesting to see how the trainers and coaches manage ice time to avoid injuries and allow them to heal when they do happen. (Henrick "Ironman" Sedin played hurt more often than he should have. If he had been allowed to rest and recover,....? who knows....)

What about King Richard and And the unlikely boys! Went all the way to the final and lost to the dominating New York Islanders of the early 80's. That team was why I became a Canucks fan and I have been one ever since. Stan Smyl, Tiger Williams, Thomas Gradin, Darcy Rota, Harold Snepts. And although my memory is super bad I still remember these boyz and their fight! Not sure they were the greatest, but they have to be considered at the very least especially if you are throwing the 2002-2003 team in the mix after Bertuzzi's incident ruined the season that could have been!

This is the best team the Canucks have ever had!! What all other teams in Canucks history lacked until now…. A elite producing… Norris Potential dman like Hughes….. He has already broken the regular season Canucks point total by a dman what 2/3 consecutive years…… If that’s not deadly enough they have arguably the 2nd best Dman they’ve ever had in Hronek…..They’ve also add some rather big D to surround this new elite d pairing. (They all play a role and serve purpose) Miller and Pettersson are performing at well over a point a game pace…. On pace to finish the season similar to Canucks greatest point season by a individual player. I believe the record is 112? ….Pettersson already a 100 point year while Miller a 99 point season…. The top end talent is entering its prime. The Elite management has added the right pieces to round the forward core into a overall elite roster…… but…with Pettersson and Hronek set to get sizeable raises this is the best this team will most likely look….. Take a Shot at the deadline!

Love you buddy. A few pennies for you. Wasn't the team a dark horse in the 94 cup run? In 2011 injuries (and in turn depth) was our downfall. 2011 was psychological, but that's the game. And yes. I think this is the best team. The core are all stars, similar to 2011. But the depth is brilliantly made. Like you said scoring on all 4 lines and an old school meets new school blueline design.

94. I blame the league for the Canucks loss. The young Canucks were storming back and had evened the series with the older Rangers. Game seven was supposed to be on Saturday but the League moved it to Sunday for the ratings…and gave the old guys on the Rangers an extra day of rest which they needed. Remember the Canucks using a hyperbaric chamber after the games to aid in recovery? I think they faced elimination games every series but refused to lose them.

2011 felt like the year if you bet on the Canucks you'll going to win almost every night. The finals it did feel it was psychological more than the Bruins beating them physically. I do think this team is the strongest it's every been but I do fear that the centre depth will come back to haunt them especially if they keep the Lotto line together the rest of the way.

The early 90's team had so much talent and upside it was sad to see it fall apart with Larionov leaving, Bure's troubles and how quickly McLean's game went so fast after 94. The 2011 team was probably better but i remember them being really despised around the league for the oddest reasons and the way they lost the finals puts them behind the 92/94 team for me. Great to see them competitive again as traditionally they do go on a run every 12/14 years. 😉
