I am the same Shannon. I started watching the Canucks around 1983. Lots of years of pain and suffering. You know what? I still look back and am thankful for the good times. The 94 playoff run to the NYR game 7 final loss to this day. Is the best Stanley Cup playoffs I have ever watched for any team. I still have faith they will hoist that Cup before I am gone lol. Don't give up!! When you lose the ability to Dream. It's time to pack it in. 😊

Shannon... My first time commenting here I believe. I think we're close in age but I didn't really invest my time and become a fan until 88 when Trevor Linden was drafted. Up till then my first fandom was the BC Lions. Got to meet the players in 86 after they'd won their first grey cup in decades. Anyway, simply foe mental health reasons, I've learned to have boundaries around this team. But if I was being completely honest, I'm a lost cause. I just love this team... Especially right now, as I place much more value in player personalities, kindness and character then I did in the past. The 2011 team came all so close to breaking me as well... Mostly because it was a ripping the heart out of my chest, then just for good measure... Take a flame torch to it with the riots that followed. Felt so ashamed and embarrassed... As I'm sure many of us felt at the time. However... Time heals most things... For me I've learned to let it go and move on... Took a while though. Anyway... Some how I remain not cynical, unlike most that have been following this team as long as you or I. I may be called an idiot for this fact but I wear it like a badge of honor. One things for sure... This franchise since I've been a fan, is never boring!!! At least we have that. Go canucks go!

Been a Canucks fan since 2000. I'm 41 years old. Was one million percent all in during the 2011 cup run, and was devastated. Was very excited during the 2020 playoffs, but since then, have been pretty absent from watching most games. But this season felt different. Been watching every game. In the 23 years that I've been watching this team, I believe that, defensively, this is the best they've ever looked. This is the first season in 23 years that I've watched this team and not have some sense of "How will they blow it tonight?" Even if they're down, I GENUINELY feel that they'll come back and win it. And when they have a lead, I no longer wonder how they'll give it up. My faith in them feels secure during game nights. I expect them to win. And with only a few lone exceptions this season, they've been in EVERY game. They've proven they can win away and at home. I have mild skepticism(as a fan of this team, how can you not), but we're almost half way through the season, and this team has proven that it has what it takes. I believe in Hughes. I believe in Demko. I believe in Tocchet. I think a deep playoff run is possible.

Once I seen Pettersson in his rookie year, I was completely ready to dive into Canucks hockey full on. Before that I've always been more so a casual fan, as a kid I didn't really know of the West Coast Express and I only got into the Sedin era in that 2011 run, once they lost, I was out and didn't pay much attention to the Canucks. Something I quickly learned is to enjoy the great moments we do get, like the season opener this year, or Demkos performance in the bubble, Canucks first game after the covid stuff against the Leafs. Enjoy games like those and don't let the losses tarnish you so much is what I feel like is best.

My parents came to Canada in 1991, and they saw the Canucks in their highest highs. And then when I was born they saw them in their lowest lows. And then just in a mediocre. Whenever I told them they won a game right now, they always reply “finally. They always lose.” Which, now looking at the board it makes more sense.

I feel your pain. I go all the way back to 1970. I have either watched on TV, listened to on the radio, or attended in person, over 90% of every game they have ever played. Ever. I have had waaay more temper tantrums over the years than moments where I was jumping around for joy. My kids and I have a running joke that the Canucks will win the Cup within minutes of my death lol. It's not funny. All I want from life at this point is a Stanley Cup for this team

30 years as a fan here... I still support, and I still have hope. I like the current management/coaches and core group of players and will keep thee faith that they will accomplish something great!

Having been a CBJ fan since the beginning (23 years and counting), I have gotten to see a Nash's Richard, Bob's 2 Vezina's, Mason's Calder, Foligno's Masterton, Tort's Jack Adams, a single playoff series win, a playoff play-in round win, a playoff appearance streak of 4, and 6 total playoff appearances (6/22 seasons). I think that is most of the achievements earned by CBJ as a team, player, or coach. I already consider VGK and SEA to have been overall better up to this point as a franchise. Does it help knowing that VAN has had some "relative success" in that they have had intervals of regular playoff experience?

I became a King's fan in 1969 so I understand completely. One of the lowest points of being a King's fan was in 2012 after a pitiful game against Detroit. You just never know when things could turn.

I totally understand where he's coming from. Being a lifelong fan of a team that has had great runs but never the ultimate success, and also had horrible seasons, it's sometimes difficult not to be too cynical. Right now, I'm just enjoying the ride. There were seasons when I stopped watching games cause they were just not fun to watch. But as of now, they are fun to watch. So it's all good in my books for now.

Ouff, this walk down memory lane is tough, but it could be amazing if they just bloody won. My fandom of this team started with the 1982 playoff run, so pretty similar to yours Shannon. Except after the 2011 run I really just tuned in for playoff, focusing more on being a dad of young-uns. Now that they're older I have a bit more time for regular season, so I'm ready to have my heart broken again. Yay!

Its a negative cycle. Losing causes people not wanting to watch, which brings revenue down, which makes management want to focus on short term solutions to bring fans back, which causes more losing later on.

Seems for me it was a combination of getting older, having a kid, along with repeated disappointments took away my enthusiasm for my sports teams. Theres just more important things in life. Having said that when the Cincinnati Bengals went to the Super Bowl I literally had a few tears run down my face. I also wasn't upset when they lost so mabye all those disappointments led to having the best of both worlds.

I feel the same way with my Sharks. I stopped trusting them after 2014. Going to the Stanley cup final in 2016 was a pipe dream come to life. But when they lost to Pittsburgh, that's where the Sharks went back to being the Sharks.

During the ‘94 season I was drawn to the crazy skate logo, and I got my first hockey jersey that year. The playoff loss was heartbreaking and I remember going to bed so mad! An hour later my mom woke me up to watch what was happening in Vancouver on the news. I recall telling my mom if I was in Vancouver I’d be out in the streets, at that point she promptly sent me back to bed. That ‘95 sweep by Chicago was traumatic! The janitor of my school was a big Chicago fan and anytime he saw me in the hall with my Canucks jersey (or without) he would make a sweeping motion. If he happened to be holding a broom at the time it was even worse! For years after that my appathy grew and grew and I would not watch a Canucks game all year until the playoffs, as it was not worth the heartache. 2011 saw a glimmer of hope and I thought there might just be a chance, but that season ended with a smashed TV remote and a Bruins hat I had to wear to work for a week. The consequence of a bad bet! This season has sparked a renewed passion for the team. But after years of trauma I have learned to hope for the best, expect the worst.

I've been a fan of the team since Bure joined. Those were some good years to be a fan early on, but after that, I've learned to temper my expectations. 2003 hurts especially bad. That was definitely their year.

Stick with them. I had the same attitude towards the Kings and they finally suprised me in 2012 and 2014. U just never know.

I think in one way or another all Canadian hockey team fans feel this on some level , Canadian nhl players win Stanley cups , Canadian teams dont . Its always something . Habs , flames ,nucks , oilers have all made the finals since the last Canadian cup but nope just cant get that cup back in Canada.

It's not just the Canucks. What about a Canada based team winning a Stanley Cup? The Canucks were one that were close in 2011 and the Canadiens more recently. ive been a canucks fan my whole life, unfortunately one of my first memories(as a human, not just hockey memories) is the Canucks losing game 7 against NYR, and looking at the massive drought in the latter half of the 90's it makes sense why my favorite team became Joe Sakic and the Avs. Canucks are still my team but there is no such thing as a true Canucks fan that doesn't have some serious reservations when things are going well. me and my friends went to watch on the big screens in 2011....that was an experience, but I was genuinely happy the Canucks made it there. This team has some serious talent, but can they put it together? who knows.

The title of this video gave me such a good deep belly laugh. Grew up in Montreal in the 70's and was spoiled. Moved to Vancouver in my teens and it's been rough. '94 was a great run and is when the Canucks became my main team. It's been a tough 30 years to be a fan. Definitely more lows than highs, but the highs have been great.

I have been a Canuck fan since they played in the old WHL. Since the day I watched them play the Portland Buccaroos when I was at a Minor Hockey Tournament in Coquitlam. It is crazy how you have mirrored my feelings towards the Canucks. As the video played out I actually knew what your next words were going to be. The year they signed Larionov to play with Bure was probabley my most excited year as a fan. I will never forget the magic I witnessed in person between these two. I also was broken when they lost to Boston in 2011, knowing (they will never win the Stanley Cup) it was over for my life time. I miss the times when I was able to get excited about the team, but have replaced that with admiration for the Canuck players and their on & off Ice contributions. How can you not admire all they have done for Children's Hospital and other Charities in Vancouver. So less of a Canuck fan and more of a Boeser, Petterson and Millar supporter. As a Seattle fan, I really hope the Canucks can be successful under the new coaching staff as it helps develop the rivalry between the two teams even though we are in a rebuilding year this season and will likely be back in the playoffs next season as long as Ron Francis doesn't mess it up this off season. As for Bruce Boudreau, I could see him being our coach should we decide to fire Hakstol (which is looking increasingly likely).

I can relate. Growing up a Seattle Sports fan and going through a 21 year postseason draught with the Mariners it's had it's impact on general fandom for Seattle teams. Last year was awesome, but it just feels like a blip and what we saw in year 1 and what we're seeing in year 3 is what we can expect. I still love the sport and love going to games, but it leaves me not believing in the team. Even last year with the great run, I just kind of went wondering when it would fall off and even in each playoff series, I went in just hoping we wouldn't get swept. This is also why I'm not against expanding the playoffs. So many of those 21 years the Mariners were the first team out, and it is crushing to any fan. I worry that is happening to fans in Buffalo. The playoffs are absolutely amazing and probably the best in all the sports, so from a product perspective it would actually bring it down, but from a long term perspective a long playoff draught can kill a fanbase which is more harmful than doing something like the NBA.

I can understand how you feel. I've been a Texas Rangers fan since 1976 and have suffered through a lot of losing seasons. Then there was the 2011 World Series to rip out the hearts of Rangers fans. So, if the Rangers can win the World Series, there is hope for the Canucks, but I understand not trusting them! BTW, I have always loved the flying V jerseys!

I became a Canucks Fan around 2012. Since then the Canucks were a constant struggle. After Bo, Pete, Brock, Quinn and Demko joined the team I was really excited, but management really scrued it up with some questionable trades and moves (Meyers, OEL, Edler etc.). I remember as a young Canucks fan in 2003 (18 years old) really nervous but angry, phoning in to Dan Russell's "Sportstalk" on CKNW about the Canucks being unable to beat the weaker teams and making it seem like such a struggle just to win a 4-3 game vs. the league's bottom feeders when we should be dominating. Just as a reminder, that was 2003 not 2023.

I became a Canucks fan in 93/94. I was 7 years old and I watched the entirety of the playoffs with my dad. I've been a fan ever since and it's been a rough ride. But Fandom doesn't stop just cause of a measly 3 decades.

I've found that having zero expectations at all really helps. I support the Wolves in the Premier League and expect to see no silverware in my life. If we by some miracle come near to winning something and then lose, the surprise of actually being good outweighs the pain and suffering of defeat, however marginal. We lost in extra time in the 2019 FA Cup semi-final and it hurt like hell then, but I often reminisce about the run we went on to get there.

And yet then came 2004…it was what they did to come back vs Yankees that was beyond my wildest hopes..

Great breakdown. I feel this is how I felt in 2010. The build up before the good year minus the prez trophies. They seem to be great but not AMAZING as they could be. One more year of maturation, growth, structure, culture and maybe 3 pieces (3RD and 3C +1?) and Nuckaroos should stomp a lot of the nay sayers. But they need tobuild up to it with a successful run this year to be a contender or clossee next year.

I grew up near the Pacific Coliseum on Renfrew St. and now live a 20-minute walk to Rogers. A Canuck fan since forever. I can never be as butt hurt as this guy. I love the game too much.

I've been a Canucks fan for as long as you have. Memories of Tiger Williams riding his stick after a goal or listening to Jim Robson play by play on the radio in the 80's. Bure breakaways and Linden's tireless leadership in the 90's. Improbable goal by Bieksa against Chicago and the Burrows bite and on and on... Canucks are always the same. They are one ingredient away from being elite. They fight for every inch of ice and still lose. Too many individuals and never the right team chemistry. Memorable highs and crushing lows. Canucks will break your heart and crush your spirit. Never be Canucks fan! Dont do it!! Canucks are the Detroit Lions of hockey. They will always let you down!!! But you know...this year does feel different.

I just remember having a laugh when the Rangers and Canucks traded coaches, especially when Torts was booted out in a year. Of course, initial reaction to AV was hey, this is great! And in time I was very happy to see him go away, especially when I saw some of the similarities people brought up between AVs time in Vancouver to his time in NY. Here’s hoping the Canucks pull through for you one day.

I'm still pretty young but I've been supporting the Canucks for 20 years now. 2011 certainly made me cynical but right now it's been so long since then that I'm just enjoying the ride now that they're playing well again. Still, the only time I'll believe this team is capable of winning a Stanley Cup is the day the Captain of the team (whoever it might be when they finally win it all, hopefully it's Huggy) lifts the Cup over his head in triumph, and even then I would have to pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming.

My dad passed away in 2003 and he never got a chance to see the Canucks win a cup, but always rooted for them, 94 was such a heartbreak. 2011 I was hoping that we would win in game 6 and bring it home and when we lost that game I knew the Canucks didn’t have left in the gas tank to bring it home. Hope we get to see a parade here in Vancouver in our lifetime.

Long suffering Canucks fan here: and there's many good things different about this team vs. other times we've had a seemingly good team that was built on a house of cards. #1: the core of the team is built around draft picks that are set to peak at the right time, instead of relying on lucky trades for players who maybe are good only for a 2-3 year window at best; #2: their organically developed core includes a star defenceman, which in today's NHL is the most important type of core player to have and one that the Canucks haven't really had before; #3) we have all the right pieces for a Cup-winning core (2 great centers, a great winger, an outstanding defenceman and good goaltender). But as a longtime Canucks fan, the only question in my mind right now is how badly the team's management team can screw this up completely.

One thing that as Canucks fan we can feel lucky about despite our bad luck: We’ve only missed the playoffs at most 4 seasons in a row and it happened 3 times: 1. First 4 seasons. 2. Messier years. 3. Final Sedin years.

I was born in 1984 so I never got to witness 1982.. The year that brought me to Vancouver was 1994 when My dad came home from work one morning and on the way to school told me canucks won in 3 overtimes... After that I had to start watching, and I remember watching Game 7 on TV Vs the Rangers and feeling so defeated.

I have reserved optimism, and not because I am native. I agree with you. There is always hope. I think even now we would be hard pressed to win the cup this year. I believe we need a couple forwards who can play. Still a little short on talent. I find we look weak against big teams still. We push back a lot better, but we still get out muscled. I think we have to many small guys. You look at teams that beat us and it is faster teams and big bruising teams like Vegas will beat us 9 out of ten games. The Jets seem to beat us. Dallas is not a big hitting team which allows us to play more on a even keel. I do think we are close. Just who do we get to take us to the promised land. I think the year Bertuzzi was suspended was our best shot at the Cup. We were a lot better than Calgary that year and they went to the finals. Mad at the league that year. I felt the hit on Nasland could have been done better and things might not have went they way it did. We could have a cup banner now. Would have could have or should have. Spilt milk now. Water under the bridge. Refs missed a few calls that would have helped us against the Rangers. Again water under the bridge. Feels like the Clevland Indians teams losing streak. And wonder if we ever win the cup. I would be happy as a pig in %*it if we could win one before I die.

I remember in 2003 in elementary school they had the whole class in the gymnasium for a "Canucks Day" so we could cheer on the Canucks against the wild later that night. We all sung "The Good Old Hockey Game" and did some other hockey related activities/games... then went home and watched the Canucks get knocked out XD

All new players, all new coach, all new front office, hopefully Aquilinis aren't meddling. No reason to expect total failure by default. Optimism is the only option

The 2011 Canucks was the most heartbreaking. Everything just made it feel like they were gonna win the Stanley cup. That OT goal against Chicago that prevented the reverse sweep. Then it was all smooth sailing from there. Even in the Stanley cup finals Vancouver looked like they were gonna win. The home team scored the first goal in every game and won. So that would mean Vancouver would win Game 7 right? Nope. For some reason, they just didn't show up that night and let Boston score 4...

It's funny that as a lifelong wings fan that grew up loving Vancouver defeats in the 90s/2000s, I'm suddenly a big time supporter of a Canucks return to contention. I like seeing struggling teams strike back even its a flash in the pan. I want teams like San Jose, Vancouver, and Coyotes to do well, cuz it makes the game interesting. Panthers last year were kinda goony and sloppy, but I rooted for them cuz it was fucking insane they even made it that far.

Do feel the same as a Calgary Flames fan with exception that we have a Stanley Cup in 1989. Since then many first round heartbreaks in the 1990s including 1994. I still believe if the Calgary Flames would of finished off the Vancouver Canucks in 1994 that the Calgary Flames would be the ones losing to the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Finals that year. That team was stacked with Mike Keenan in his coaching prime. Calgary Flames only have advanced out of the first round three times since 1989 and always when they do advance has to be done the scariest way possible. Even in 1989 the Vancouver Canucks did give a scare. I was exploding with joy in 2004 when Martin Gelinas scored that goal in overtime but I thought the sports gods had it against me when Matt Cooke tied up Game 7 with 5 seconds left.

Avs fan here. I want to ask a question.... I remember that first series we had against Vancouver in 2001 en route to the Cup, and even though it was a sweep, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I really felt like any of those games could have gone for the Canucks. In fact I thought it was a harder series than the conference final even though we lost a game to the Blues that round. You only briefly mentioned it so I guess you probably didn't feel the same way?

I’ve been a Canucks fan since the beginning. Never wavered. Had season tickets for a few years in the late 80s. These days it has become too corporate. Every home game is an exercise in corporate social responsibility. That includes a special cause, a ceremonial faceoff, and a ‘heart wrenching’ story of some sort. I was fine with a hockey game. Skip the loud music during play stoppages - the organ was good. Hell, I don’t even think much of the goal horn. In short, there’s too much manufactured enthusiasm. Even with those complaints, I’m still good with the hockey part. Mostly. I mean I’d prefer a little less cycling the puck and teeing up shots into a wall of guys laying out to block them. I could see the 2011 team shaping up years before. This crew is on track for better things with a management group that is actually serious about building something. Never say never.

I've followed the Canucks from the UK for best part of 30 years. Could like any team as I don't get over there or have any connection anyway. My home town Football (UK) team is Newcastle United, who haven't won a trophy of note since 1955.. Misery follows misery!? Times are changing for both!

The “Ronning trade” was one of the most lopsided trades in history. Never has one team lost so much talent in a trade and gotten so little in return (the Blues). I know the Blues needed some toughness but to unload your entire 2nd line is insane. Geoff Courtnall was PPG and Sergio Momesso made a lot of contributions too. Canucks went from scrubs + Bure to a contender with enormous size and skill.

I know we have failed for 53 years but this year is the year 😂

In 1985 we were finishing a new home for a family and got to meet them. There was one boy and he told us that his favourite team was the Canucks. We all felt sorry for him.
