It took me many years to realize that buying tools I didn't need, that are VERY expensive, to keep my Tool Truck guy coming in, was costing me a fortune to avoid buying a 10mm socket when it breaks. In todays world, we need to make choices based on many factors. Not only price, but service, quality, necessity and so on. Save money where you can and spend it where you need to is what I recommend nowadays. Loyalty to a "brand" is just not worth the huge money it takes to be part of the club. Buy Smart but not on a single issue.

My Matco guy helped me get a gearwrench cart that I really wanted instead of trying to force one of his carts on me. Having someone that’ll help you get what you want, instead of selling you what’s on his truck or catalog is a blessing. Our snap on guy doesn’t even regularly stock tools and only cares about selling his boxes and carts.

If you value your tool truck guy, keep the faith in paying the truck account to terms. Many circumstances can put any business out of business, but if enough customers are skipping making a payment, or shorting the payment, too many at the same time, and the revenue flow is cut off and diminished, then your tool truck dealer's suppliers will cut them off and stop shipping. Once there is such an interruption it takes many weeks to restore a sound condition to operations. Your tool guy is like you, a working guy, and not a rich investment broker with unlimited funds to tap into to make up a difference in lost payments. As Clay from Koon Trucking points out you are paying top dollar but getting personal service, hands on prior inspection, accommodations, warranty without hassle, and interest free credit on a handshake and word of honor, from a local neighbor and friend. No direct OEM, internet outlet, or big box store will give that kind of respect.

I've lived without a tool truck dealer for going on 16 years now. I miss having a great tool dealer once in awhile when a brand will come out with something new like the long nose snap on slip joint pliers but, I don't miss having a weekly tool bill. I think a good tool dealer can be a great thing but, the quality gap between truck brand tools and non truck brand tools has narrowed significantly. It also depends on how many tools you need. Every one reaches a point when you have just about everything you need so, you're only warrantying existing tools and not buying too many new tools. I know I wouldn't want to be a tool truck dealer in today's market.

Everything in and including all 3 of my boxes are off the truck. My Snap-on and Matco dealers are great guys if I have an issue I take it to them they hand me a new one. I will forever support the guys that support me. That being said on my field truck I run all the junk harbor freight/ icon stuff do to the fact i don’t have a problem welding cutting up or when the tools break just throwing them away.

I worked for a State Garage for 26 years and both our MAC and Snap on Dealers hung it up! We have difficulty trying to get another MAC and Snap on dealer to come around as it was out of their area. We ended up obtaining a Contractor Lic. and having to make a list of items we needed each month and going to Home Depot or Lowes to purchase tools and other shop supplies. Jacks, stands and major items we had to send out for bidding from varius vendors like Coates or Hunter. Our Snap on and Mac were truly top of the line!

I completely agree with your opinions. I’m the same way, I would much rather pay more for the tool trucks. They’re convenient, and like you said with the warranty, break something and they’ll take care of it right then and there. And if it wasn’t for the truck account I wouldn’t have half the stuff I have. And like you said, they’re a small business too, they rely on the sales to support their families. Online companies can care less in my opinion.

Corporate doesn’t pay these dealers enough money for the book of business that they are building. these guys are their advertising and they are paying to be that for these big companies. They are doing everything for them and not getting paid enough.

When I graduated in 1986 and got a job at a dealership there were really only 4 pro grade tools in northwestern Ohio that was Snap-on,Mac,s&k and craftsman. Now a days there are so many brands like all the house brands and then brands like gearwrench.powerbuilt,boxo,sp tools. And so many others. I still think tool trucks are still a necessity especially to shops

I'm not a pro tech, I've never had a tool truck account, and most of my experience of going on tool trucks comes from watching your channel, but here's my opinion, for what it's worth. Tool truck brands are undoubtedly more expensive, often a lot more expensive, but they do offer that personal service and convenience of bringing the stuff right to your door. The tools are also generally of very high quality - the brands have a reputation to defend and depend on building up brand loyalty over a working lifetime of tool buying, so they stand behind their products. A lot of techs need to rely on credit to buy tools, and trucks can offer that. And last but not least, going on the tool trucks every week and hanging out with Michael, Joe, Hamilton etc looks like a lot of fun! I can understand not minding that you pay a bit more for that. Think of it like going to drink in a bar rather than staying at home and drinking alone - sure, your beer is going to cost you more in a bar, but you're getting a whole social experience that you wouldn't get at home.

I think tool trucks will always have value for professional mechanics, you're not just buying the tool you're buying into the service and replacement - and that's where you get value as a mechanic. Walk on the truck and walk off with the tool you need to do your job. I don't work as a mechanic, but I've found myself walking into the HVAC supply house occasionally and getting a tool I NEED that day for a higher price because it's right there behind the counter and I can touch it and take it straight out to my van and then use it on my next call. I could get it a few bucks cheaper online, but I'd have to wait a day or two. If I were working as a mechanic, I'd probably have a 50/50 ratio of tools off of the truck and tools I bought online(or at big box stores).

My matco guy tried selling me a box for a few months but I said I wanted a dark deep purple color. He got a wrap shop to wrap the toolbox and the tool cart. He brought swatches and let me pick from them to get the exact color I would want.

As long as us mechanics want 5 star service with no questions asked replacement, they will keep going. I have 75% SnapOn Mac, KD, Lisle, OTC (gotten off tool trucks) but im not sure i would have that many tool truck tools if i had Amazon when coming up as there are some really solid tools out there

The only truck left at the shop I work for is an independent. We were paying Snap-on prices on the Matco truck, and the Snap-on guy was going to retire. The Matco guy burnt a lot of bridges to the ground, I know you know about that Clay. I think independent trucks will have an easier time than any of the other companies. I think the rest of them will have to start selling to the general public. It is just like you said the big problem for people is the price, and I know that there were way more sales on the independent truck this year than Matco and Snap-on combined. Mac and Cornwell do not exist. No one wants to be a tool salesman around here. I think Snap-on, Matco, Mac, and Cornwell will have their work cut out for them to compete.

Speaking of tool truck service, my Snap-on d/a sander quit on me mid week. I called the tool guy up, told him what happened and he had one dropped shipped at the shop next morning. Tool truck service is great! Amazon does have its place as well!

Great video clay! I have great snap on and Matco dealers in my area. I will definitely pay the premium for the tools for the service they provide. All of the tools in my box are from a tool truck or the manufacturer I work for special tools I have purchased. U can’t beat the truck account!! It would suck if tool trucks went away. I look forward to the days when my dealers come.

Since 1984, I've had one good MAC man for 6 years and one good SNAP ON man for 8 years, with none in between or since. In fact, I told Snappy that if he showed up 6 weeks in a row, I;d get on his truck, but until then he'd have to bring his tools in to me to view from the parking on the street. Which he did. The 7th week he came in empty handed and said " You remember what you told me ?" So I went out and got on his truck. Bought a lot of tools and equipment from him till he had to retire because of loosing his eyesight. But till then he showed up every week like clockwork. Sure do miss his FRIENDSHIP and SERVICE. If you've got a good dealer, SUPPORT HIM. THE GOOD ONES ARE HARD TO FIND.

Not to mention, have u ever returned stuff at Home Depot ( fir work). Not fun. It’s an hour and half to drive there and back with return time of returning the husky ir in this case a Milwaukee inflator) and sometimes there’s tons of fine print

I try to stay away from Amazon. I’d rather keep my money local. Thankfully I have a great Snap On dealer. There’s no MAC or Cornwall trucks in my area anymore. The Matco driver won’t take on any more stops 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have like 7 of those cyclops lights now. They’re about $45. But if 4 of us buy one all at once, we can bully him down to $30 a piece. We buy tools together and usually get a hefty deal if I get the same thing as another guy in the shop.

Snap-on doesn't charge $375 for any ratchet (not including battery), the most expensive ratchet is $296 and I know that's still a lot of money but it's not $375, lol

I think it the convenience and easy to pay over time. My Cornwell guy is the best and will support him. He helps me out all the tool and if I call him he gets my tool all the time.

I’m a sucker for the tool truck brands and other quality tools. I have no business buying Snappy, Mac, Matco etc. I don’t work in a shop, but I’ve managed to establish a relationship with a Snap-On rep that services my area. He knows I’m a hobbyist, and gladly takes my money. He makes deals and is willing to order anything I want and doesn’t screw me on price. That being said, I buy stuff off the net as well. Harry J Epstein, MTN, and Amazon. It’s all about service.

I buy all my big ticket items from my tool guys. Yes Amazon had my Autel for a grand cheaper but try to get it fixed under warranty. I'll spend the extra just for the warranty.

I’m pissed now because my Matco guy has been off for 2 weeks. My Snap on man on the other hand has been MIA for 4 months now. We need a SNAP ON dealer in West Tennessee. When I need my stuff warrantied on a Tuesday morning my truck dealers are a 100 appreciated. It’s about the relationship. Some stuff can be waited on to receive in the mail to save a lot of money. But when that truck pulls up and you need that 10 MM swivel that’s broke swapped out in 2 minutes it’s a great deal

I have two tools on order. One from snap on which is a 5mm hex blue point socket. It’s week 6 and I still don’t have it. The other is a clip pry tool form Matco. It’s week 5 and I still don’t have it. So as far as I’m concerned tool trucks are becoming less relevant to me. I’m getting real tired of paying way too much money when I can go elsewhere to buy the same or sometimes even better for less and obviously much faster. Warranty is a joke. I’ve had tool trucks tell me it’a lifetime warranty but when it’s warranty time here comes the excuses and trying to find a way out luckily one of those guys retired. Also a warranty takes weeks best case and they keep changing designs so you don’t get the same tool always. I generally buy from them to keep them operating and I understand they have to pay to run that truck 5 days a week which isn’t cheap. But the least they could do is actually get stuff in a timely manner and stand behind the warranty. I’ve ordered tools all over and can get them generally within 2 weeks most cases yet these trucks take forever so long I’m not ordering no more if it’s not on the truck. Next time I’ll just go somewhere else or maybe the tool brand website and get shipped to my house in 2 days to 2 weeks instead of waiting on my local tool truck however long that will take. I’m guessing it’s going to take about 2 months to get a basic tool form then at this pint which is just unacceptable.I’m honestly just really frustrated since I’m paying on 3 accounts right now but yet when I need something very simple I can’t seem to get them to honor their end. I always pay and on time and what they asked me to pay weekly yet again I’m getting the short end of the stick here.

I’m only 35, but even still throughout my life time I have even witnessed the growing trend and the decimation of artisan tools and tool makers. Unfortunately everyone wants cheap, and now. Disposable, but fast. Amazon, Walmart, etc. That isn’t to say I have a problem with those businesses, they have their place. But it’s really sad that the people on this earth who strive to perfect. Who reach for better. Who offer their blood, sweat, & tears in the form of a handmade plane or chisel for woodworking, or whatever the case maybe. Even the giants of High Quality tools like Snappy are feeling the sting of the throw-away society were living in

This is a great question and topic Clay, and I agree I’m a tool truck guy and I’m not even a professional mechanic or work for a shop, I’m a chem Eng working in the pharmaceutical industry.. although I’m a DIY guy been working on cars for 30 yrs.. my point is I’ll treat myself to my main staples , metric sockets, and three sizes of ratchets and wrenches with snappy or Matco bc I have a a good relationship with tool guys as I show up periodically on their normal route stops.. I buy in full with them bc I like you want the tools at the moment.. I do all my own and friends/family work with car issues. I would rather keep my $ in the local economy and support these guys than to give it to a corporation directly, I don’t even consider a few extra bucks in the difference bc I’ve been burned with online before and online returns isn’t something I want to do. Now, having said that, I do also buy lesser brands of tools online but of just as good of quality, i.e sonic, tekton, GW, and ICON I’m partial to many companies and I want tools that are designed specifically for the jobs I’m doing.. I agree in supporting the good tool guys and I feel lucky to have a couple tool guys that are as cool as Matco Michael and Hamilton (hope he’s doing well in his new business) and I can trust them to warranty anything I buy from them. Yes I think tool truck guys are still a valued service, yeah you oh are paying more but think about where it’s going, and you don’t need to buy everything off the trucks, I think the main staples should be of the best quality you can afford. Breaking tools and rounding off fasteners is never fun on a job.. work smart and use the tools as they are designed

Hell, when I switched jobs, I didn't have a Cornwell dealer anymore. My previous dealer actually lives down the road from me, but it's technically a different dealers territory so we couldn't do business anymore. So my matco dealer has actually warrantied Cornwell stuff for me since he knows the guy who is supposed to come to our shop and doesn't. His logic was, it get me on his truck, so he will get my business instead of Cornwell. It worked.

Some things I will buy from my matco or snap on dealer but the other trucks are to unreliable. I’m also worried my matco dealer will retire at any moment. He’s been doing it 30 years he said. So I would say they are relevant but with so many companies like capri, gearwrench an tekton that offer good tools and service online they are easier to over look.

Most of my hand tools come from harbor freight but some tools I've got are specialty tools I got toos come from truck supply and part stores were I'd have to have tools harbor freight won't have for me to work on a Cummins or Paccar

the company i worked for had an industrial account for snap on.. all tools in the shop were snap on. we called or email the rep and it was a done deal bought or sent replacement parts. didn't like it return it. con exs we had in the field at powerplants we overnight tools

we have a love hate relationship with out mac guy. he gives us the best prices and always has the newest stuff first. his truck is also really packed with a wide variety of different brands. at the same time though we hate the fact that if anything needs to be warrantied you have to give it to him so he can send it out. it's been 3 months to get a streamlight in warranty. my snap on guy said the hell I have spare parts for the lights on the truck and if I can't fix it on the truck I would give you a whole new light. 😡

I'll pay more for my mac dealer! He has gone out of his way to help us millwright's out at work. He's always there for us! If wee need something same day he'll bring it or have someone deliver it!

I understand about supporting your tool guy I have been wrenching for 26 years l don’t regret any of my tool truck purchases but with the inflation of prices now a days are crazy. I feel bad for the young guys that are buying 800 dollar 1/4 inch socket sets 480 for set of deep well 1/2 impacts or 200 dollars for a 8 piece screw driver set. I can go on and on. I tell young bucks stay off tool truck buy capri,tekton sunex gp. Email these companies about warranty and what it takes to get warranty. You can have so many more tools for a decent price and be more capable to do more because you have acquired more tools for the less money than what the tool truck can offer.

Yes, Tool Trucks are still relevant. The service is the biggest part of the cost. If you need calibration, certifications, service updates, etc. Then the tool truck stuff is the way to go. Usually, the tool truck stuff is a tad better and generally are able to be replaced immediately, no questions asked. Some of the better run, smarter tool dealers can and do sell supplemental tools such as Sunex, Knipex, etc.

HNY Clay ... I agree with you 100% ....... I have alot of Snapon tools and alot of friends i have are techs and they say , why you spend so much on Snapon tools ? I tell them if i break something and i need it my guy will stop by in about an hour or so or make sure i have that tool when i need it tomorrow . To me that is service and i will pay a lil bit more for it . They dont see it like me and you but one thing also . They were not working on Flat Rate Either , so TIME IS MONEY ! They worked for all different types of places so that makes a big difference too ! Great video Clay ! Thanx !

This is just my opinion, the trucks have tremendous value IF and that's a BIG IF they keep coming around regularly. Its been my experience that trucks will just stop coming to your shop all together if he isn't chasing 20's at your location. If everyone pays cash and has a pretty full box and the truck is only going to pull $500 tops every week and sometimes nothing but warranty they tend to disappear. And dealing with Snap-on directly for warranty is B S! That gets annoying REAL FAST!

I sent my drill to Milwaukee because it wasn't working, got it back later than they promised and it made one trigger pull in forward and shut off, had to send it back. I was without a drill at work for a month and a half, would've been much faster and easier on me to have a tool guy do it

FYI the Harbor Freight Brushless Hercules line is amazing. I’ve showed it on my channel several times. It has a 5 year warranty on the tool and 3 year on battery. If it goes down take it in the store and swap it for a new one. Plus the Ultra Torque 1/2” Brushless impact is NO JOKE. That is as strong as the Milwaukee. Much cheaper. Same warranty.

I haven’t watch all of the video yet but the tool truck is like the mechanics water cooler. So much is talked about. Even talking about who’s hiring in the area and all the gossip of other shop drama’s. I would dearly miss my tool truck reps. 😢. I will pay extra for all those perks. Oh yeah I forgot my rep will let you try before you buy most large purchases. Can’t do that with box stores.

That's funny because my Snap-on rep went to bat for me for a job, and that's was the deciding factor how I got my job, I always take care of my Snap-on rep, and the cool thing is we're the same age, and will probably retire at the same time which I'm really lucky and fortunate for that, but a lot of companies usually go for the tool truck to figure out if the guy is worth their salt or if they're a jerk, and by the way I'm a heavy duty mechanic, and the tool reps know who's a good mechanic/person and who's not by how they act on the truck and if they pay their bill imo

I hope they stay relevant; my Snap On, Mac, and Matco dealers are awesome, and I look forward to shooting the sh!t with them when they roll up every week. (heck, just met a really cool Cornwell dealer as well). I’ve learned a lot about the local economy from them as well. I think it’s more challenging for the independent tool trucks since they are selling the same brands you see on Amazon, and a lot of people don’t value service, time, and convenience as much as they probably should. We see that in auto repair. Some customers only care about price and place NO value on service or reliability. They inadvertently spend more money on their vehicles paying hacks for things they don’t need and services they didn’t actually receive. But, like you said, “Darwinism”, lol.

In my opinion it’s only a few more years before tool trucks become obsolete. I know plenty of techs now that buying off a tool truck is their last resort and honestly I’m with them. Nothing against tool trucks or who’s running it’s just much cheaper ordering tools online. Warranty has never personally been a problem because let’s be honest we all can feel when a hand tool is gonna break, so I’ve honestly only ever broken very few tools in my time doing this, so for me ordering online is MY best option. I’ve seen some trucks drastically lowering their prices and I can only imagine it’s bc of people ordering tools online. Great video thank you sir

The reality is a lot of techs can’t afford to buy online. The tool trucks provide credit to a lot of tech,s that otherwise couldn’t get it the traditional route. As long as that service is provided the tool trucks will stay relevant.

Harbor Freight "same day" warranty is only good if they have the item in stock at your local store. My local Harbor Freight never has the Icon double box flex ratcheting wrenches in stock (I had to order mine online when they offered a coupon) or the reversible ratcheting wrenches. So if I break one, I have to search online and see what other Harbor Freight stores have it in stock and drive over there to get a replacement. Not very convenient. Same thing with Napa. My local Napa only carries the most basic of Carlyle hand tools. They never have the ratcheting box end wrenches in stock or the reversible ratcheting wrenches in stock. I either have to have them order me a replacement and wait a few days or find another Napa store within my area to get "same day" replacement. That's why I always "double up" on tools that may be hard to get "same day" replacement from places like Napa and Harbor Freight.

I wish my dealers would do a parking lot location one Saturday a month. I’m just a home mechanic that doesn’t work at a shop or even in the field anymore. I have a lot of snap on and matco tools I bought 20 years when I went to trade school. I like to buy quality stuff and have resorted to buying snap on off eBay. I would much rather give that money to a local dealer than some online retailer. Would be nice to have a warranty on certain items that will get beat up on the homestead. It might not be consistent business but give the DIY and home mechanics a chance to spend their money someplace other than eBay or Amazon!

I buy tools from Snap On’s website frequently. I can get what I want, when I want. Don’t have to deal with the don’t have one on the truck or try to meet the truck if and when they show up. eBay is a good place to buy good used name brand tools.

When buying off the tool truck's you are helping him as well as the company they represent. Some tools are barely making money, where as more expensive tools and tool chests make a lot of money. But if the dealer decides to carry some other brands that's solely up to them. If it's a few dollars more that's for his service. Now yes there are fewer dealers around, but I have seen more Snap on trucks on the road than others. But In the end you are getting a better tool off the truck than the store, however the trucks cannot carry everything. Happy New year everyone.

I gave up tool trucks since I got to my new shop and couldnt be happier they are not worth it if there warrantys werent so picky then maybe it would be different. Im now working as a crane mechanic and making more than ever and happy to bring home my money instead of spending it on work again

As an autobody student I've been buying alot of tools. Mostly Tekton & Gearwrench as they are quality tools and are affordable prices with lifetime warranty. Will I ever buy off a tool truck, sure I will. But there's no point in buying off of it just to say I bought off of it.

10:27 I agree to that I have some really good tool truck guys they show up weekly and my Mac and matco dealer gives us the best deals to me that’s the important part. I maybe a Mac fan but if my Mac dealer was a different tool truck dealer I would still buy tools from them because they are worth my money. It’s the same way with any store like when I want to buy a craftsman v series tool I usually order from my moms ace or the one in the next town over because both have been very good on warranties and quality of service if I need something someone is always there to help with a friendly attitude.

I think a big hurt for the tool trucks is the companies making or rebranding the tools ( snap on, matco etc.) Are charging the franchises to high for tools so the franchises can't be competitive with online pricing of other brands.
