If I recall correctly, one of the requirements to be on the shortlist for purchase by McElhenney and Renolds was that it was a small club from a small community that was in dire straits and needed help. There were numerous clubs that they looked at but Wrexham is the one they chose because of the situation Wrexham was in, the community they were from and the footballing history they had. Unlike a lot of foreign investment in English football clubs, McElhenney and Reynolds certainly didn't purchase Wrexham because they thought it was going to be a massive money making operation for them. At least to me, it does seem like they their hearts are in the right place where Wrexham, the football club and the community, are concerned. And that certainly an't be a bad thing.

If the documentary was to be a success, which it is (in Hollywood, success means boatloads of money), a massive money making operation was a certainty. Today, RR McReynolds Company LLC is exactly that, with a Midas touch. Genius, absolute genius. No one looses. Wrexham won large, RR won large, bean counters won large, even National League and their clubs won large (ex. I am in Canada, and i bought a subscription to National League streams, and it isn't a freebie). Won't be long, League 2 will be the buzz of English football, and they will all win large. Imagine that, worldwide attention on League 2!

Notts fan here. To be fair Wrexham have suffered for a long time so yes they probably deserve to go up. I hope we do too. I remember many years ago Notts were backed by millions from a con outfit called Munto. At least Wrexham money is there. Lot of rubbish traded by both sets of fans but generally both have respect for each others club on the whole. Good luck to both teams.

I don’t really follow the whole show over there at all, but as an American, it’s a link that you can grab onto. There’s a near total lack of exposure to the league except for an awareness of the most famous teams, so looking at it is probably like the equivalent of a person in England looking at baseball and wondering if you want to follow the Reds or the Diamondbacks or the Rockies, or if you just pick the teams winning championships, be a fan of the Astros or Dodger, or the Yankees because you’ve heard of them. But when you have two guys from North America that you’re familiar with and like who go over there and buy a team and put themselves into it, it gives you a reason and gives you permission to do it too. Yeah, if Manchester United did a documentary show over here, some people would watch it and get invested, but it’s still random and removed. With the guys over there, it’s like they’re representing North America, and it’s easier to identify with the two guys hopping the pond and learning the sport and caring about the team from the box than it is to be like, “hey hey, go Arsenal, I support you for no particular reason.”

The biggest difference between these oligarchs that purchase high end clubs and what Reynolds and Co have done is that they have taken a local community in need and brought pride and joy back to that community. They have invested wisely and they are doing this in a humble way with a love to the sport rather than a love for the money.

Comment from a Yankee here ... I had the pleasure of living in the U.K. for a few years back in the mid 2000's (2005 - 2007). My ex's father in law had a box at Old Trafford (I married into Untied fandom) and I have been follow footy for since I stepped foot on England soil. In any case, now the Wrexham has been taken over by Renolds and McElhenney, I've adopted them as my Club #2. The exposure they've received from Welcome To Wrexham has 100% increased their fanbase in the States. I have so many friends and colleagues who did not follow soccer (especially international footy), but now do thanks to the Documentary. I don't understand how anyone could see their recent success as a "bad" thing. It's just like any other sport in the world... when a new ownership group takes over any club (regardless of sport), they are going to pump $$$ into that club to get them to the next level, league, etc. etc. etc. National League TV seems like a it came into fruition specifically because of Wrexham's success and the backing of Renolds and McElhenney. How can anyone be upset at more eyeballs (especially from the U.S.) on the greatest sport on the planet. If there are issues with Wrexham and their popularity, it's straight jealousy. Get over it and enjoy the ride!!!

People always mention the money the owners have but the money the club has generated is through sponsorship and the documentary, granted none of which would happen without the owners, but they're making the club sustainable, not doing an Abromovich. I think the reason a lot of fans from other clubs are now hating Wrexham is because of the media love in... I support Wrexham and even I see Wrexham talked about in every single media outlet, however, any club would love owners who have bought into their club like our owners have.

Wrexham is a long way from being sustainable at the moment, they've lost millions the last 2 years - which is huge for thar level. But I think they ultimatley do have a unique opportunity with how the media deal is selling the community/club story and generating a large fanbase that can all share in their inevitable (and it is inevitable) rise up the football league. Ryan and Rob would have to mess it up big time if they fail to reach the championship in the next 7years or so.

I remember Wrexham playing both Fulham and Man City in the league in the late 90s. If they can get pumped up the leagues with big investments it's defintely our time given the pain the club has been through since the new Millenium. What McReynolds have done by popularizing Wrexham has been to show that this is more than a sport it is the heart and soul of the cities and towns throughout the lower leagues. In the end what makes Wrexham the team that everybody love is not Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney, but the spotlight they have put on the passion of the fans for Wrexham, passion shared by all of the fans of National League Teams; they all deserve their moment in the sun. The Welcome to Wrexham documentary was so well done and so charming, that there are a significant number of Americans who have become Wrexham fans. Some of them-- like me-- never even followed 'football' before-- the documentary got me into both the sport and a particular team. Also, w/r/t "Is it fair", I think that's the beauty of the English relegation/promotion system: if it is unfair, it's only unfair for a year or two, then Wrexham gets promoted, and it's not a problem for any of the other teams in the league anymore.

The Wrexham story has raised the visibility not just of their club, but the entire league. Small towns throughout Wales and England that a lot of people probably never heard of are suddenly on the map because of their football club's contests with Wrexham. This can only be good for attracting sponsors for the National League and all of its clubs.

Andy, it's NYCFC or New York Red Bulls. We have more than one team in MLS. Those of us in the States that knew of Wrexham prior to the TV series, we're looking forward to see how they get on in League Two and beyond. The fact that Robb and Ryan have been so well known in the U.S. prior to their takeover helped bring a lot of us into the project they are taking on now. It should be even more interesting to see how many Wrexham shirts are in the stands in San Diego vs Manchester United. They are also sending a team to play in a 7v7 tournament in North Carolina as well. And why do we pretend that there aren't big spenders in every league other than the Premier League? Because Sunderland has outspent League One and the Championship teams for years and still haven't made it back to the Premier League.

Don't forget we did the same in 2011/12. We came second to Fleetwood with 98 points when Fleetwood had the money to keep Vardy banging them in for them week after week. We were a fan's owned club running on a shoestring and just about breaking even with gates of 5,000. It's amazing how short peoples' memories are. We got 98 points and then went out to Luton in the playoffs (and it was York City who went up). Your fan Joe is going on about us having "bought" the League, but so did Fleetwood, so did Stockport last year, so did all those vanity clubs with zero fanbase like Salford City and Forest Gump. It is the only way to get out of the National League, and if it wasn't for this system some of us might have opposed the takeover

The thing I don't understand is the lop-sided promotion and relegation. If it's a standard concept why do the numbers up and down vary so much across the leagues in England? Why is it not a standard 3 up/3 down across the tiers? Or crazy Idea...if you are ahead of all the other teams by 20 points or w/e figure as the non-automatic team you get to go up because its obvious you are significantly more prepared for the week to week grind than a team that might get lucky against you on the pitch for a single match. Notts or Wrexham is going to put up over 100 points and NOT be automatically promoted. ARE THERE 5 TEAMS IN HISTORY that can make that claim?? 100 and NOT auto promotion?? I'd honestly like to know.

For years suffered at the hands of owners that only wanted to asset strip, in order to line their own pockets and run the club into the ground. 1 year ago if you started talking about soccer I would have switched off, from being an avid non watcher of soccer to a massive fan of Wrexham from the documentary watching games at 1, 2, 3 in the morning in Australia I can only imagine the new masses of people now watching League Football all over the world, this documentary is a light in the darkness at the moment which is sorely needed in our times, the exposure that Rob and Ryan and this team has now given the sport as well as the cash injections to all involved through sales of BT Sport access, apparel made in the UK as well as visitors coming from all over to watch can only be a good thing for the sport can it not?, the only downside to all of this I think is that if Wrexham go up into League 2 then the viewers / followers will shift to League 2 leaving National League behind, maybe an opportunity for someone / others with the funds to work with another National League team and keep the momentum going? - The Wrexham / Notts County game was amazing and well worth the dollars, money well spent.

I am Canadian and became a Wrexham because of the original story. Since I am a huge Man Utd fam, so I love the upcoming match. Wrexham had a lot gong for it with its history, formerly in a higher league, oldest stadium, etc. fits a Hollywood story. Man City was a 3rd tier club, bought by HUGE money and bought the players to go up, yet nobody questions that duplicate situation. Anyone who whines about another team got bought and fixed up to rise in the ranks, it is just sour grapes and childish tantrums.

We are still hiding behind the sofa, hardly breathing. Notts are a top club too. Hope both get their reward this season. This story, remember is keeping a lot of people employed. The football competition is great..real football, all through the league. But lots of other people are benefiting from the Wxm story too. Away travel is lucrative to all National League teams, who greet the Wxm Dollar with open turnstiles. Prediction. Next years Nat. League will be wealthier and following the business example of R+R to their benefit. Eg. Game Streaming this season, miraculously improved thanks to influence of the Wxm Chairmen . Wxm fans have been in this league a long while and have seen other clubs come and go after benefiting from very wealthy owners. Nobody likes a clever dick or a wealthy owner, it seems. Well, this year, it's us, MAYBE. And fingers crossed County.. in the playoffs.

Like you, I’ve followed Wrexham over many years, and remember us being promoted in the 70s then many years later, after rare successes and occasional failures tumbling down and out of the league thanks to the financial irregularities of very dodgy owners who tried to bankrupt the club and destroy the oldest international football stadium in the world. I don’t recall that many commentators complaining vehemently about the way we were treated then, so it’s a bit rich that these Talksport ‘personalities’ now try to generate controversy and are riled by our good fortune without acknowledging any of our history.

Either allow any team to get outside investment (as it is now) or don't allow any team to get outside investment. If you're going to start complaining about outside investment then you better be ready to remove sponsorships, merchandise, advertising. You'll no longer be able to watch your team on TV since broadcasting rights are part of the 'outside investment' category. The beauty of the way it is now is that teams going under like Wrexham can be saved and create this fantasy storyline. The bad side is that other teams will inevitably get shafted. I think the majority of football fans would choose to keep it as it is now. Even that Notts fan who called in to moan admitted that he'd love a multi-million £ takeover.
