Some insight for upcoming gaming content creators. The more you want to grow, the less time you have to game. Right now, recording game footage is under 10% of the time I dedicate to content creation. The rest all goes to editing, thinking of new ideas, community engagement and other more tedious stuff like brand deals and investments. The dedication content creation requires is really high, and as Harris has said many times, it’s something that never stops in your life. Not that it ever feels like a job for me, but that’s because I actually enjoy every part of the process. Definitely isn’t for everyone. Also, I am not a professional player or anything, so my experience as a content creator may vary from other’s.

So many great points here! I stumbled into being a KZfaqr and it's quite a bit different than I would have imagined. It is a blast BUT it isn't all fun and games - its also a small business. That means things like speaking with accountants, creating schedules, reviewing contracts, and sometimes staying up later than I'd prefer to make sure I hit my release schedule. It all takes a great deal of time and dedication. But it's waaaay worth it imo. I'd estimate that I spend 90% of my time doing support tasks - the business stuff I just mentioned, planning and testing content ideas, interacting with viewers, etc. and less than 10% of my time actually playing games. For a gaming channel, that may be surprising to people, but that's the reality of it. I think you really have to have a passion for all of it to really be successful. But if someone has the passion and drive, I'd always encourage it! As always, love your cinematography, writing, and the video generally. Excellent work!.

You are correct. Seeing a video in 10th on the list, and not even close to 9th, hurts. Especially when it's one you put a lot of work into and just KNEW it was going to do well. I've been doing this as a part-time side job for a while and the extra monthly income is great for sure. I'm ready to take it full time, almost to that point. I love the creative process. Self evaluation and creating for the sake of creating are the 2 most important things to understand for YT. I do gaming content and I tried live commentaries, I tried high score gameplay, montages, funny moments, I tried Call of Duty, I tried Battlefield, I tried discussion commentaries. All with very little to no views. Then I did some self evaluation. I realized I'm not that funny, I'm not that good at the game, not that great at editing so what could I create. I found news, information, tips etc as my gaming niche for Halo and now I have almost 30k subscribers. Harris is on point with these topics!

I never saw myself as a creative person. I can't draw, I can't paint, I can't sing, I can't dance. The last couple years I've been finding creativity where I never thought there was creativity, which is coming up with ideas and concepts. This applies to streaming, video creating, but also as a marketing-communications adviser. Through KZfaq I want to explore that creative part of myself, no matter how big or small I stay. I just want to see what my brain can produce

I found myself asking these questions (obviously paraphrased) recently after a few months of really slow growth. I found I'd gotten way too obsessed with the numbers and was losing sight of why I even wanted to create in the first place. It took a message from a viewer to snap me out of that, about how much my videos helped them keep their spirits up through a stay in hospital. That's why I started, and why I'll force my way through every barrier that I can. Growth doesn't matter, nor does monetisation or going full time, what matters to me is the impact on the individual. That's what other creators did for me when I needed it most, and that's why I've wanted to do the same for so long. Making someone laugh when their mind can't help itself can literally save a life, and so I can't see myself stopping for a long, long time... Even if all those 10/10s still hurt and I have no time to play Halo.

Keep the format if you can I love to see the behind the scenes even though i'm sure it makes the editing/recording time longer.

KZfaq or becoming a "youtuber" is another thing to "dream/live" for. I played college ball and wanted to go to the NFL just as bad as anyone. Didn't make. But the Grind of trying was a great ride in its own right. Same thing when it comes to streaming for me. I can stream and youtube for the next 10 years and never make it but having that hope of possibly make something of it is what makes it fun. The Grind. Who knows maybe that 2000th video or 15th year I'll make it or not. Either way, life's good. All I can say is I wish I started streaming and youtubing when I was in college and before. Shit who knows. Keep grinding people. Maybe we'll make it.

I went from having nothing to having something. That's really satisfying. Whenever I get caught up in numbers or viewership, I remind myself it's the making stuff that matters most. Bro, I needed to hear this. I often get caught up in what’s trending and all that in my niche as a way to grow, but then I forget about what makes me enjoy making content in the first place. These are some serious questions I gotta ask myself on a daily basis. Thanks for the video Harris!

Loved this. I struggled with a lot of this my first 3-4 years into what I've been working on. But today I'm happy with what I've learned from it all and where I can start filling in the gaps, where I can improve and even identifying what it is I actually want out of all of this in the first place.

Great video, this is the sort of thing I've been needing to see right now. Also, Pocket Groove is one of my favorite StreamBeeats tracks. This style of video was fun. Watching you do the setup chores kept me watching the video as opposed to listening with my phone off to the side.

You did not fail. You learned lots of video editing skills. You gained many hours of practice in front of the camera and had fun doing it. You also learned lots of information about cameras, camera settings, lighting, etc. while you were being paid and having fun. When we go to college or learn anything we are not paid while we are learning. It is always a huge risk as to whether that time spent will provide income later. You also created many relationships along the way. Nothing you and your wife did was a waste of time or energy at all. Learning and growing will always take time and energy.

I'm so glad i came across this video! I have been trying to get back into content creation mainly because last year i had a rough time and decided to just take time away and i blamed everything except what truly makes sense and it was my self awareness, I am stillness trying to get back and your videos like this make me look at it from a different perspective rather than just going into it blind 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Hi Harris! Thanks a lot for this video! I don’t know much about KZfaq yet so this definitely helps. I mostly try to make videos I like and hopefully somehow others will like them too, but I won’t hold my breath on it 😅 stressing over likes or subscribers isn’t a good feeling, if it happens it happens. That how I look at it anyways, I’m sure others will see it differently. Take care!

I love how he was trying to record the video and set things up in his streaming room at the same time to "save time" but it took him twice as long bc he was to set up the camera for recording a small part in the video. But hey it was a great video, love the info and yeah that's a lot of stuff I've been considering, most people probably think hey if I was as famous as so-n-so then i would definitely be able to make content like that but they forget the beginning process of grinding out content without much to show and sometimes you get lucky and blow up but most of the time its just grinding and keeping your passion for content creation, great video Harris love the insight, keep it up man.

Honestly I think these questions don't just apply to KZfaq. These questions apply to content creation as a whole. Trying to become active on social media as a content creator as a whole. As someone who has been considering beginning to actually make "effort-ful" KZfaq content other than stream VODS and clips after streaming and being active on Twitch for more than a year now...all of these questions hit a bit harder than expected. But this still motivates me to keep on going. and better preps me for any future challenges that are on the journey of content creation. With that being said. I love how you kept the little things in that ended up being mistakes. Like the camera being out of focus. Or how the camera was tilted at an angle and you adjusted it. Just the little moments of you trying to do something at the same time as recording. Even just a little bit. It's a nice little mental break and a little insight to how you work behind the scenes in a sense. It's a lot more grounded than just a simple q&a video. Casual but with a serious vibe.

Creativity is definitely there for me; I love filming--most the time, once I get myself into editing mode, I love editing and getting the video further curated for my channel. Most of the others still need work. The only thing that does make me want a verified badge in places like YT is the fact I've already had what most would call "trolls" who end up making a fake acc that looks like mine, then abusing it to cause harm. I don't care about the numbers for it, just a need that's developed, as I've literally watched people who follow me find reason to go follow that fake account as well as though it's my second acc (it's not) when IMHO they shouldn't follow it--it's illogical. Call me crazy, but it's the similar to the reason you said to like the video (granted I liked seconds before you said to like it, lol); it's like it clicks a lightbulb that's like, "Ah this the real channel, so I follow it." On a separate but not unrelated topic, I will say that as a 1.75K sub channel, I am finding myself constantly questioning what I feel makes sense and what is right, then whether it's sane or not. I find myself stuck in a loop of wanting to have a sense of the free creativity of YT maybe 10 years ago--but then... still gotta have a way to move through the journey.

I can honestly say, it almost made me want to quit and just game, but I like a creative challenge, and editing my videos to try and be a good video editor for my channel is a bit time consuming considering how I’m juggling my work, my job and my irl life, thank God the new year is coming and it’s full of new creative challenges for me as a video editor AND as a gamer/streamer, and this is coming from someone who has no editing experience just coding and software experience alone.

Interestingly enough.. this gives me more security in my career path. I fucking love the planning and editing of a GOOD KZfaq video or even a series that people can binge watch. I myself will binge watch something on KZfaq if it keeps my attention. Making something that can do the same for others would make me feel so happy and even if it doesn’t gain traction, if I can see myself binge watching it then I am happy.

I appreciated the sober honesty in this video and the juxtaposition between you busting your a** to get the stream room ready while also making the content really helped hammer it home. #5 is by far the biggest question, in my opinion, and I'm happy to see you bringing attention to the fact that people WILL FAIL and that they need to be prepared for it. Awesome video, Harris

This was indeed "onion-y". Very eye opening. As a small content creator that has experienced their fair share of failure. However I realized that I'm in this for the fun of creating content. Not more so for the numbers. The numbers are important, but at the moment it isn't for me. Its fun. Thank you Harris.
