Nearly 70 years ago a young girl named Aretha Franklin stood up to perform a gospel song in her father’s church. The soulful notes hit the walls with trembling potency. In 2016, for a live performance for TIME, Franklin returned to that church in Detroit, Michigan. #ArethaFranklin #QueenofSoul #RIPArethaFranklin

Your comment is so profound because it took me a while to understand the magnitude of her gift. I tried to watch the VMA Awards tonight & it was just depressing. Most couldn't sing & the few who could actually sing were technically good but didn't have any real passion. Aretha interpreted every word of every song, reached into your gut and grabbed it: tone, range, power, interpretation, perfect pitch. These current singers aren't even on the same planet as her. Her talent was somewhat recognized, though, because she was requested at every pivotal moment-- from MLK's funeral to several presidential inaugurations to standing in for Pavarotti. Whenever they needed someone with unequaled talent and gravitas, it was Aretha. Not even talented vocalists like Jen Hudson can match what Aretha had. She was like the sun and the moon-- you just took it for granted she was there, because she was always present in the background throughout the stages of our lives.

Aretha was excellent. For those who didn’t catch it, she has what musicians call “absolute pitch”. In the very beginning, she sings the G# she wants the organists to play. Amazing. Rest In Peace Aretha.

Why does she sing in head voice most of the time?
@michaelbessey8469
@michaelbessey8469 6 жыл бұрын
Raydoffa Braziel She’s actually singing mostly in mixed voice - very head-dominant mix but mix nonetheless. She used a lighter and lighter mix with age - less full-voice belting. But her 2015 Kennedy Center performance of “Natural Woman” proved beyond any doubt that she could still belt her ass off in later years. I think she was just less consistent and more easily fatigued as she got older. Here she is sitting down - which makes singing in full voice harder - and is plainly really tired. She actually looks a bit sick and in pain. I think this day she just might not have been able to sing in full voice. And she didn’t need to - on this song, the light, almost wailing sound made the performance even more plaintive and soul-searing. RIP Aretha, you will be missed.

I don’t think she was in physical pain at that moment as some have suggested, I think the gravity of being in the sanctuary were everything started in her life was just extremely overwhelming. She seemed unusually emotional as if she knew life was coming to a close for her and that building was making it real.

She actually lost a lot of her range in her chest voice in the early 80's due to heavy smoking and improper vocal care. What's amazing is that she adapted, and never let it hinder her. She improved her head voice tremendously, and her bottom end gained so much strength and resonance - She was truly a remarkable vocalist

It just dawned on me that she was saying goodbye. According to the last verse, she was playing this song directly to God and telling him, "When I cross over, take me into your arms." She knew her sun was setting. As the tears roll down my cheeks while I type this, it also dawns on me that maybe the title "Queen" was a bit to small for such an angelic soul. If I've ever heard God sing, it was because I heard Ms. Franklin. Thank you for sharing your immeasurable gifts with us Queen Angel Aretha Franklin. There will never be another. You've lived a life poured out. You've earned your right to rest well. Salute.

I’m not knocking today’s artists but when you go back to Queen Mahalia Jackson and Queen Aretha Franklin & all the other greats who have gone on, they poured in so much anointing & soul in their music. Hell all they had to do was sing the first 10 seconds into the song & people started shouting & the church was lit

Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Cleanse me from its guilt and power. Not the labour of my hands Can fulfill Thy law's demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless, look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Saviour, or I die! While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See Thee on Thy judgement throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee.

She had a lot of grief filled memories in that building. Her father was the pastor until he was shot by a burglar in June 1979. He spent the last five years of his life in a coma because he lost too much blood to keep his brain oxygenated. He died in 1984. They were going to just let him die at the hospital but one of the nurses at Henry Ford Hospital recognized who he was and advocated for him to be put on life support. Aretha was playing a gig in Vegas when she got the news about the shooting.

New Bethel Baptist was never the same after Rev. Franklin was gunned down by a burglar. The absence of his powerful voice echoing off the walls always brought her grief back to the surface whenever she went back to New Bethel Baptist after he was shot.

This was...powerful! The Queen performing her “Swan Song” and what a song selection at that “Rock of Ages” You can tell she was overcome with pure raw emotion. Being in the place where it all began, near the end of your life. My God! I felt this!

It's 2023 now. Almost 36 years ago I sat about 30 feet away from where she was sitting in this video and watched her perform a gospel concert with her sisters and Mavis Staples. The performance was recorded and released as a double LP gospel album in December 1987. I got goosebumps as soon as I heard the first five notes of Ave Maria come out of her mouth.

This made me cry, but even in the end she still had that gift of soulful music. What was more moving is that she was close to her father and spoke about how her dad built that church. She reminds me of my mom I lost. I really gotta stop looking at this, but Aretha was one of my mothers favorite song artist. I definitely see why my mother appreciated this womans musical gift .

My heart hurts actually but I know at lest now I can talk to her in my prayers and I believe she will here me better than a phone. Oh man we are loosing all the real stars "when they stood for something' She really was someone to really look up to with her life. Such a woman and there are so few of that standard, Don't know I will ever be her equal. She deserves that peice of my heart. At least 58 years worth or so. Rest in peace my friend that I never got to personally see. Be well and have a really terrific time with the Lord. You worked so hard for it...Now She was a Woman of Quality.

I just know her and Whitney are taking center stage together above the clouds; dueting in their PRIME vocals (Whitney's voice in the 80's/early 90's, Aretha in the 60's/early 70's) Just imagine if they had both been in their vocal primes at the very same time, during their time on this undeserving Earth? It would've been incandescent and damn-near cataclysmic!
