Argentina President Javier Milei slams elites at Davos: 'the state is the problem'

Argentina's libertarian President Javier Milei praised free markets and slammed socialism at Davos on Wednesday (January 17) during the first overseas tour for the self-proclaimed 'anarcho-capitalist,' who is battling to fix a major economic crisis at home.
During his speech, Milei focused on the role of the state across a wide range of activities, which he said amounted to levers of control rather than allowing citizens the freedom to prosper through their own efforts.
The trip marks a test for right-wing Milei, a relative political newcomer who took office last month after a rapid ascent from acid-tongued economist and TV pundit to the presidency. He is keen to win backing for his economic ideas, which include shutting the central bank and adopting the dollar.
Ahead of the speech, Milei met British foreign minister David Cameron and was set for a head-to-head with International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Kristalina Georgieva, after Argentina struck a staff level agreement last week to salvage its $44 billion loan program with the fund.
Milei is battling to bring down inflation that topped 200% last year and rebuild depleted Argentina's foreign currency reserves.
He is pushing major economic reforms, including spending cuts and deregulation, in a bid to improve the government's finances and boost the economy. But he faces poverty levels which are climbing above 40% and the threat of social unrest.

if you really believe that Argentinians 'voted' Milei into power, you are not paying attention (or more likely paying attention to a narrow band of information that conforms to your world view. Though, of course, no one has 'all' the information, but we can put in the effort to 'follow the money' and look deeper into significant events to trace where the real power is) there are very (very!) powerful global forces at play in Argentina. Argentina has been a play-thing for BIG money for over 3 decades (look into who Benegas Lynch represents, and the Atlas Network, Mont Pelerin, etc etc).

We should mention that in Argentina, Milei allied with those very same "political class who only wants to stay in power and retain its privileges" when his campaign wasn't giving the numbers to win the elections. And that same political class it's still untouched while the poor and middle class suffer all the adjustments that were supposed to be charged on those politicians. One thing is to say what must be done. But actually follow up on it is something we have yet to see from Milei. All theorist sound solid until they face the practical circumstances of the real world, and that applies both for communism and capitalism

He already has a negative image in our country because he made a devaluation, taking the official dollar from 400 to 800 pesos, that means that he took away 50% of our purchasing power. A food like rice that costed 400 pesos now costs 1900 pesos. And to give you an idea of how expensive this is, an average salary in Argentina is 200,000 pesos. If you don't have your own home you will literally starve. He also defunded education and public health. defunding CONICET (which is an organization in our country dedicated to promoting science, research and innovation). I am from Argentina, we inherited a devastated economy from 20 years of leftist/collectivist government and 100 years of doses of socialist ideas, we have an inflation of 200% annually, this month it was 25%, prices increase almost every day and now everyone leftists are in continuous protest and want to overthrow President Milei, who is trying to implement the necessary changes. Many people do not want to change because many of them have privileges or are indoctrinated by the previous socialist government. This will be a tough battle to change the socialist mentality of the people. My message to the people of the United States or Western countries is not to believe in the idea of collectivism/socialism, these policies may seem nice but the moment they are implemented they start to ruin the country little by little, causing poverty, low salaries and the quality of life is much worse, theft, deterioration of education, the Argentine case is evidence. You have time to change.

Furthermore, he is a believer, and has a philosophical and moral basis for what he says, hence his conviction. What he says was always the same, the same, the same. Those of us who have read or heard it many years ago when no one knew it, can attest to that. Then, perhaps his effusive way of expressing himself is partly his personality, partly it may have been a strategy to get people to listen to him. We could use a man like Javier Milei or Pierre Poilievre. Idk if our regime will allow it to happen. They’ve got a target on their opposition and GOP voters. We based our constitution on the USA constitution, and we also have a strong European ancestry. We had all the ingredients to become a great country. If you look back, there was a time when my country grew at similar rates to yours. However, we faced a unique challenge that you (thankfully) did not: Peronism. This ideology infected people's minds and proved to be a disgrace; people became accustomed to receiving everything for free. Productivity declined, and the diminishing incentives to work created numerous distortions that politicians attempted to resolve through increased intervention. As they intervened more, the result was a surge in debt and inflation, with the inevitable consequence that someone has to pay. This situation led to chaos and the breakdown of the social contract between the people and politicians. We also reached a point where nobody in the world believes in us, and lenders are hesitant to provide financial assistance. Most of them lost trust in our ability to manage our affairs and lend us money. Socialism and excessive intervention, as we've experienced, are a recipe for disaster. While we have now embraced change, it came at a considerable cost and a prolonged period of suffering.
