Method Actor Fact: Although he had initially agreed to play the part of Sonny, Al Pacino told Sidney Lumet near the start of production that he couldn't play it. Pacino had just completed production on The Godfather Part II (1974) and was physically exhausted and depressed after the shoot. With his reliance on the Method, Pacino didn't relish the thought of working himself up to a state of near hysteria every day. Lumet unhappily accepted the actor's decision and dispatched the script to Dustin Hoffman. Pacino changed his mind when he heard that his rival was being considered.

One of my favorite Pacino movies especially for the exterior banks scenes where film in the nearby Brooklyn neighborhood that I grew up in…and I remember as a 14 year old at the time a bunch kids would pass by the makeshift bank on Prospect Park West on our way to and from Prospect Park or the movie theater…Times were certainly different for us teens back then…the streets were like an extended playground..we could gather 10 to 15 kids without the use of a cellphone or schedule playdates..we roamed throughout the neighborhoods unsupervised, half the time our parents didn’t know where we were…our idea of after school program was to sneak onto the subway in Brooklyn and ride the trains to the Bronx and back…or hitch a ride on the back of the 5th avenue bus on our w ay to Sunset Park pool…back then no handheld devices to carry around, instead we carry around a Spalding high bouncing ball and we would chase after that ball up and down the streets, crawl under cars, climb on top of roofs for it because we didn’t want to lose it..not realizing it at the time how precious a 10 cent spalding could be.

I've always loved this movie! Pacino's best performance as far as I'm concerned. Perfect mixture of tense, hilarious and over-the-top. He improvised A LOT of the dialogue, especially the back-and-forth between him and the cop (Charles Durning).

Oh, this one is rarely reviewed/reacted to! A gem of a movie! Al Pacino is fantastic in this one. It is one of these Al Pacino movies, that nearly got forgotten, like "Cruising". Maybe, because they scratch topics, that the mainstream still has issues with many decades later, LOL.

One of my favorite of Pacino's characters is "Lefty" in Donnie Brasco. It's another true story mob movie but Pacino plays a very different kind of character than what he plays in The Godfather or Scarface.

Great movie choice, Aria, and nice reaction! Dog Day Afternoon has to be one of the funniest, saddest, best directed, and best acted films I've ever seen. It's also a movie you can watch again and again, and each time you'll pick up something new in it. There's so much to see.

A great reaction to a great movie. "Serpico" is another great Pacino movie from way back.

Definitely check out "Serpico" (1973), the "true story" film Pacino did with the same director before this one, also set in New York. Pacino plays a very hip cop who tries to fight police corruption. It's a '70s classic as well. Another great Pacino film is "Carlito's Way" (1993), an exciting crime film set in New York.

This was great! Everything you'd want in a "Dog Day Afternoon" reaction (which is a very rare thing as of this writing!). I love how you loved the humor! Can you imagine Al Pacino being a brand new up and coming actor at this age in this timeline? Women would go crazy for him. Even my own Mother said it. This movie was interesting to see last year. Way before Scarface happened. I recommend "Scarface" if you haven't seen it yet.

There were a LOT of bank robberies in the '70s, and several great films about it. There's a '70s mob movie with a bank robbery called "The Friends of Eddie Coyle," totally worth seeing. It's very cold and brutal, not as funny as this, but memorable.

Yes, Serpico is just as good, by the same director, and also based on a true story! You'll fall even more in love with Pacino; I can never take my eyes off his luxurious head of hair whenever I watch it :) The director Sidney Lumet has written one of my favorite books on filmmaking simply called "Making Movies." It's a really easy read and gives you a lot of perspective in the life of a director without being overly technical. Some reactors recently have been watching Lumet's "12 Angry Men" from 1957 and it's as interesting and riveting a movie as anything made today.

Dog Days refer to the month of August, usually one of the hottest months of the year, especially in New York. Supposedly the month where dogs catch rabies the most at one time. Or they used to. The bank robbery itself took place in the month of August.

The director rehearsed the cast for weeks so that everyone knew exactly what they were doing.

For Al Pacino movie recommendations, Scarface is maybe his most popular film, Heat is a fantastic film, Donnie Brasco, Carlito's Way, the Devil's Advocate, Insomnia are all good. These are mostly crime movies, it's kind of his thing. Though he does have some interesting drama movies as well.

The title comes from an old saying 'every dog has his day'. Meaning even people who are often down on their luck will have a day when they will shine.

It's amazing how Al Pacino and John Cazale (Sal) are completely different people in this movie compared to The Godfather. Great actors. Unfortunately John Cazale only appeared in 5 movies and died young.

This was a great way for you to follow-up with The Godfather. This might be Al Pacino's best performance ever. And as people have said a great blend of drama, suspense, and humor. As for other Pacino movies, I tend to be in the minority on Serpico. I think it's decent, but nothing special. As for other films I would recommend "Scent Of A Woman", which earned Pacino his first Oscar win. "Glengarry Glen Ross" which has Pacino with a great ensemble cast of actors. And of course, "Heat". Which has both Pacino & Robert DeNiro in a spectacular crime thriller. Keep them coming, Aria! You are amazing, and I hope your lip is better.

Yes. That was Lance Hendricksen that played Bishop in Aliens and the police officer in The Terminator. And the cop (Charles Durning) was a US Army survivor of the Malmedy Massacre during the Battle of the Bulge during WWII.

I saw this movie at the theater when it first came out - it's a true story - it was funny and fascinating - that this robbery could have gone as far as it did. Pacino and Cazale are wonderful in it. A MASTERPICE of Writing acting and directing and what I STILL consider Al Pacinos BEST performance... Both Hysterical and tragic..

This definitely is a fascinating movie to watch, especially cos it really did happen. Reality truly is stranger than fiction sometimes lol. The idea that a failed bank robbery became some circus act on the streets that no one could look away from is hilarious to think about. Seeing how excited the people get (both the bankers and public outside) when they get the chance to be recorded for tv is amusing. It really captures the time period lol. What I did find poignant and sad, considering this seems pretty realistic for the time, is how quickly the public changed when they found out Sonny (or John in real life) was gay. They went from cheering them on, to laughing at and jeering them. Especially seeing the hilariously amused or quietly awkward reactions of the cops when they were talking to Leon and listening to her and Sonny's conversation. Nice reaction :)

Few other movies around the same time worth looking into. The Sting starring Robert Redford Paul Newman and Robert Shaw. The original taking of the Pelham one two three. Which Stars Walter Matthau Jerry Stiller and again Robert Shaw. And the original Death wish, first one starring Charles Bronson. Definitely three worth looking into. Taking of the Pelham one two three and Death wish. Really portrayed how New York was in the early mid '70s. Keep up the good work take care and be well.

when he is screaming Attica it is a reference to the Attica prison riot. When the police were retaking the prison from the rioters, they killed 30 inmates and 9 officers who were taken as hostages by the prisoners.

John Cazale is the actor who played Sal, and Freddo in Godfather I and II. He was mostly a stage actor but he was in those three movies, plus The Deerhunter and The Conversation. Only 5 movies but all five were nominated for best picture oscars. He was terminally ill from cancer while making The Deerhunter. His girlfiend, Meryl Streep was in the movie in a pretty mundane role but she took it so she could be near him. Pachino had said that John Cazale taught him more about acting than anybody in the world.

So many great movies from the mid '60s to the late '70s or early '80s. Too many reactors are concentrating on movies of the last 10 or 20 years. A lot of the superhero comic book Star wars nonsense. Where CGI is completely overused. Movies from back in the day. Used to rely on great scripts acting chemistry between actors story and just. Complexities of the human experience. To put forth and tell a story in such a grand way.

Aria, whenever a movie says it is "based on a true story" it usually means the screenplay was INSPIRED by true events, not that it is a completely accurate depiction of what happened in real life. They may take elements of truth and then create a dramatic, fictionalized portrayal around them. I hope your cut lip is doing better and that things are looking up for you now.

I am really getting to appreacite your reactions you choose classics that are not "easy" to watch and do a great job. If you liked this movie I would suggest 1973's "Serpico", another a true story and 1993's "Scent of a woman" which also has an undertone of moral choices. 1995's "Heat" is amazing, Pacino plays a cop and it has the first time ever him and de Niro were in a scene together.

This is a true story. Ironically, the bank robbers just saw Godfather in the theater before the robbery. They wrote on the paper to the teller, "An offer they can't refuse". This is the reason Pacino accepted the movie role.

I like tgf3, idc what people say, but it does have its problems. I'm a big pacino fan, I've seen all of his films and will take a break and binge watch them all again. Tgf trilogy are my favorite though and i watch them yearly, sometimes even 2x a year. Pacino was so pretty in the 70s, i love how he uses his eyes in films. Alain delon is also pretty with nice eyes but he doesn’t know how to use them and not as good an actor s pacino is
