In this video I look into an issue on my Ariens lawn mower - the self propelled drive locks up. With the help of my youngest daughter, I remove and inspect the drive unit, belt, and cable attachment, service the differential and reinstall it. I also give it an oil change and sharpen the blade while I'm at it. After all that, I put it to work! I had a similar problem with wheel/drive gear. My issue was over time when mowing a rough bank on my yard, the drive wheel would fall off. I noticed the bolt that holds the back wheel(s) was flush on the inside once tightened. So I got a longer bolt with an Allen head, also used washers and a nut to lock the wheel on tight. Did this on both sides. Wheel has not fallen off since. Enjoyed your video, especially the oil change since there is no info about oil change for this model on KZfaq. Thanks 😎

I had a new transmission put in my Toro last year. The plastic gears was worn out after 5 years of mowing six yards a week. The new transmission had metal gear and was less than $100. Worked great last season. I’m ready to get it out in a few weeks to start the new season. Great video.

Yeah it seems a little silly to have plastic gears on something that is meant to take some abuse. I've owned this one for a handful of years and this was the first issue I've had with it. Thanks for watching!

Have the same mower and one of the pinion gears needs to be replaced. You show a little filing around the end of the axle, and you were able to slide the gear off. On my machine, the end of the axle where you filed is quite a bit larger than the diameter of the gear, so there is no way it will slide off. How much filing did you do or was there more to it than is shown on the video? It sure looks like a simple replacement, but I can not figure out how to get the gear of the end of the axle. On mine it just needed a little clean up for the gear to slide off, just some rust and junk holding it up. I didn't really take any metal off.

Hello what engine is on that mower? Is it a Honda?

No it's the 159cc Ariens engine mad by loncin? I believe it's a Honda clone as it looks almost identical to my Honda push mower.

This thing was the worst lawnmower I ever owned. The self propel engagement handle is made of cheap plastic and constantly breaks, the engine is an absolute gas hog that goes through a full tank of fuel every time it mows a yard that isn’t even that big, and the stupid thing didn’t even cut that well.

I actually like mine quite a bit. I have a Honda as well and like both, but usually prefer the ariens.

ive had 21" ariens piece of crap. always starts. plastic gear that break, grass get stuck in the grears.knobs fall off. carb, drive gear, drive handle and hubcaps replaced,

I've had really good luck with mine, other than this issue. I have a Honda as well, and actually prefer the ariens.

@matthiasgrundler2404 from your email I would guess that the belt is incorrect or something is holding tension on it causing it to engage. As for removing the transaxle, I assume you mean from the deck? Otherwise I don't follow what you are asking.

@@EvanWells07 At 12:30 in the video, you have the transaxle in your hand and the Rear Axle is on the bench in front of you, separate from the transaxle ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odyTdM1hyqizZJs.html ) How did you remove the transaxle and spindles from the Rear Axle assembly? thank you,

@matthiasgrundler2404 I think I just unbolted the flange at each end and slid it out. I don't remember it being anything super complicated, and never had any exploded views or diagrams, just started pulling things apart and put them back together.
