Today, we're looking at some of the recent developments and shifting dynamics in the South Caucasus. The assault on Armenian-controlled Nagorno-Karabakh appears to be a tidy victory for Azerbaijan, but there's more at play here.

I personnaly don't rejoyce in history moving again, in the direction of horrible Turks always killing other people between Turkey and Central Asia in horrendous genocides. A 100 years after another appaling genocide of Armenians that made Turkey so much bigger at their expense, the world is again witnessing this horror. I wish everyone that is not on the side of Armenians there, to one day experience this Turkish barbarism. And I wish Ican be there to tell them : "What do you think of Armenians then ?"

Years ago I offended Monsignor Jack on a cruise when I said I admired Cuba’s Castro for his conviction. He would die with his troops if it came to that. All he could go on about was the suffering of the Cuban people & his bankrupt ideology. I agree on both points but I still admired Castro’s conviction even tho he was wrong. @@godschild6694 I’d be fine if he backed it up with educated opinion as to where Pete fell short. Pete made a 13 minute summary of the history of the area. There’s bound to be a lot of stuff left out. Also, Pete isn’t an expert on the area (he can’t be an expert on everything-he’s a very good generalist with broad knowledge), so he might be missing important detail or nuance. So I don’t expect Pete to be perfect. But like you, if someone who is an expert wants to criticize the presentation, I’d like some details about where Pete gets it wrong. This region of the world has a complicated political history that puts the Balkans/former Yugoslavia to shame. Like Tito did in Yugoslavia, the Soviets kept a lid on centuries of ethnic and religious strife. Before the Soviets, Armenia and Azerbaijan were under the thumb of the Ottoman Empire (the Turks). Armenia suffered greatly under the Turks (including the 20th Century’s first genocide), and I don’t think they ever recovered. The Soviets offered Armenians protection and some limited opportunities (including opportunities in the lucrative industry of state corruption under communism). The smartest, most entrepreneurial, most ambitious, and most educated Armenians have been fleeing the mother country for more than a century, forced out by the Turks first, and later escaping communist oppression. If I look at the successes and prosperity the Armenians of the diaspora have achieved in their adoptive countries, I wonder what could have been achieved in Armenia if they hadn’t been forced to leave. I suspect that the bot you responded to isn’t really a bot. It’s someone who is pro-Armenian, who grew up hearing the history from the Armenian perspective, and who isn’t ready to hear anything that challenges his world view. He really needs to hear different perspectives if he is to form a strategy for Armenia based on reality, but I don’t think he will because the Armenians are a proud people. But pride goeth before a fall.

The analysis is on point as always. Here's a suggestion for Peter, please analyze the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina right now. There's a similar process going on under the sponsorship of Russia, where a Serb secessionist and glorifier of war crimes, Milorad Dodik, is trying to destabilize the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina from within. He's also a favorite of Orban (Hungary) and Vucic (Serbia). He is a regular in Moscow and he goes there for updates almost on a quarterly basis. For context, Bosnia is trying to join NATO, and has been for over 20 years now (basically since the end of defensive war in the 1990s) but is actively being sabotaged by Russian meddling through the Serb minority in Bosnia. There are even fears of renewed conflict, if Russia needs a decoy in the Balkans to create a new frontline or at least a messy situation in the Balkans so NATO is bogged down on 2 fronts.
@pr0xZen
@pr0xZen 10 ай бұрын
@@looseycanonIn addition to Ukraine and Moldova; Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia - all of these have been trying to strengthen ties with NATO and at times eye'ing full membership, some wishy washy times aside, pretty much since the Sovjet Crumble. All of them have been kept at various multipliers of arms length by Russian puppetry maintaining some sort of territorial dispute (NATO does not "import conflicts"; NATO is a mutual _defense_ alliance, and doing that would in effect be a de facto pursuit of war). However - if Russia can't hold up their puppetry and military intervension in the region, these countries manage to end those territorial disputes with minimal bloodshed, and they're mostly able to establish reasonable diplomatic and political relations including a formal peace... Then I wouldn't be surprised if NATO and in part the EU decides to make a push to pull them all into the fold somehow. If not them, Iran probably will, and I imagine Turkey wouldn't be all too keen on that. Turkey would probably rather be at the forefront of that NATO push if the region manages to settle down mostly on their own (with solid external incentives). Might not be ordinary NATO memberships though; NATO with Turkey (and possibly Ukraine at some later stage) could possibly become organizational bridges between NATO "proper" and a new sister branch in this eastern/ eurasia region.

What you missed pointing out, are the Karabah clans. Because the situation of Nagorno-Karabakh is so precarious, without international recognition, under economic isolation, under constant military threat, a handful of Armenian clans keep the territory as their collective fiefdom and these clans also have the upper hand in the politics of Armenia proper. They are hostile to Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan. He came to power by ousting their cronies. So now he is in the lose-lose situation of either helping his political rivals and losing the power in Armenia in the process or stay passive and be ousted through a popular revolt, being condemned as an ultimate traitor to his people.

Mainstream news media is pretty much useless in that regard. Like a Sirene warning you of a fire, it doesn't explain to you what fire is, how it happened, and why it's bad. It just screams at you. That's mainstream news. It doesn't lead to any understanding. Also, it's 100% influenced by private investors trying to push a political agenda to further their personal interests, or ideologues that try to cause political shift according to their own dogmatic convictions. Even "free" and "independent" news organizations are entirely corrupt. The official German news, supposedly specifically designed to be partisan and separated from state AND private investors, it's STILL completely corrupt, biased and one sided. (because the authoritive boards of the organization is carefully selected to be extremely homogeneous and lobsided. Also their global news information comes from larger news organizations that are themselves not objective or unbiased at all) If you want any understanding of anything, you better start reading some books, and integrating yourself in a community that has formed around that topic, and take part in their discussions, because 5 minutes of coverage of BBC or CNN won't give you ANY meaningful understanding of what's going on. The revolution changed everything, corruption has been low since then, and people are far less poor than they once were. Not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but virtually no one is hungry and homelessness is a rare phenomenon as well which at least puts them above extreme poverty. Drinking water is accessible to everyone as well thanks to the omnipresent water fountains throughout the cities. Secondly, I find it very hard to discuss the conflict without mentionning the ethnic cleansings that have been perpetrated by both sides. The conflict is about a lot more than simply territory for Armenians, it's about saving the Armenians in Karabakh who are being starved, raped, tortured and killed on a regular basis. My point is that such atrocities makes it very hard for the situation to ever de-escalate.

" it's about saving the Armenians in Karabakh who are being starved, raped, tortured and killed on a regular basis". There are no Azerbaijanis there to do these alleged things because they were completely killed off and ethnically cleansed. So that's a made-up claim. The most recent UN report on the region completely debunks any wrongdoing in the region by Azerbaijan, as Azerbaijan has minimal presence there.

They have conducted military operations at the Azerbaijan border to intimidate the Republic of Azerbaijan. They have supplied Armenia with Russian weapons. Watch the videos of military convoys going from Iran to Armenia during the 2nd Karabakh war (2021). Armenia truly dropped the ball big time. The decision to assimilate the territory was terrible. The Armenians in that territory had made a referendum for independence from Azerbaijan, Armenia should have made it an independent republic, because that would have a far greater chance of gaining international recognition, instead of having a claim that no one recognized. Nowadays, Armenia is on the verge of disappearing as a state.

I don't think Armenia will disappear. If Azerbaijan went so far, it would lose all international support. They aren't willing to give up their positive relations with EVERONYE for Armenia. And yes, it was a stupid decision to take Nagorno-Karabach. It was always an unstable solution. Two groups who hate eachother can't have land in eachother's country. If Nagorno-Karabach had been independent and worked with Azerbaijan on security, the chances for peace would have been higher. Hatred is a strong motivator and blinds people.

@@devalapar7878 Azerbaijan don't need to roll tanks all over Armenia and do some HOI4 annexation of the territory. Armenia is landlocked, former "ally" of Russia, surrounded by neighbors who hates their guts (Azerbaijan on one side, Turkey on the other). Georgia is up on another border, but Georgia is not about to trust a former Russian ally, not without some hard diplomatic work. The only option would be to get closer to Iran, which basically put EVERYBODY hates, and would put them against Saudi Arabia, Israel and the US. Now, even if Azerbaijan don't conquer Armenia (which yeah, it wouldn't be accepted at all by the rest of the world), they can let the country in an impoverished state and politically unstable that could throw it into anarchy and chaos. Armenia is indeed in a serious risk as a functional state
@jj-gz9xd
@jj-gz9xd 10 ай бұрын
@@user-vk3gv2nf1g I think what is missing from your analysis is that Armenia is not a functional state, never was since its independence. It was always Russia's vassal state - Russian army guards its borders, Russian companies own its strategic infrastructure, Russia donates arm and subsidises its energy needs, the list goes on. No natural resources to speak of, no foundation for economic independence, no vision developed ?over the past thirty years. Name another 'functional' state that is in the same position. That was why Karabakh was such a pivotal issue for them, that was what had kept them together and gave an illusion of a victorious nation. And their diaspora only fuelled it and took advantage of it, because that what gave them clout and relevance both in Armenia and abroad. Armenians really need to learn to live within their means (in a broad sense), but they still have delusions of being a 'great armenia'. As long as they do, they will not be able to turn the corner.

When you say Azerbaijan is going to do what Armenians did to Azerbaijan you are omitting some things that Azerbaijan has done to Armenians. Recall Baku and Sumgait pogroms. Putin was already to pivot towards AZE earlier since the country was just more valuable to RUS. After NK falls completely, for RUS, the path to full alignment with AZE will be clear. To view RUS and ARM purely as these historic allies is naive or dishonest, or just a gap at best. AZE shares gas routes with RUS, while ARM is not much more than a liability that was turning into a nuissance after Pashinyan took power.

@edwardsnowden8821 Precisely, and it runs it but is not enough to make it thrive, just hold the line at best. When Pashinyan wanted to diversify away from RUS, this angered RUS, and RUS stepped up efforts of "balance". RUS had been already drifting away from ARM and you could see this in arms exports and other forms of high level meetings, but with Pashinyan, RUS has just been trying to find ways to leave ARM hanging, at least in a graceful way, but after the UKR war start, RUS and AZE stopped caring about grace.

Russia may be moving towards AZE, but they seem to be moving towards Turkiye. I recall watching a video of street interviews with AZE people a few months back and asked who they prefer between Russia and the EU, a few said the EU. None said Russia. But the vast majority of them stated they wanted to be part of a Turkic block led by Turkiye. Is Turkish influence going to rise as a result of the latest events rather than Russia's? I ask as I don't claim any expertise on this subject.

I've noticed that east-west mountain ranges tend to breed highly independent, long-lasting little communities. North-south mountains create valleys that don't get enough sun to farm on more than a bare subsistence level. Your mountain communities there are still independent-minded, but too impoverished and vulnerable to do much about it except to hope to go unnoticed. East-west valleys get the full benefit of the sun's passage and prosper enough to make the residents strong and siege-resistant, even as the mountains themselves make their positions defensible. This is true from the Basques holding onto the oldest language in Europe, to the legends of Shangri-La that may or may not refer to Shaolin in the Himalayas.

@@juniorjames7076 It's just an observation. There's also the Taurus and Zagros mountain range that shelters the Kurds, which has a mix of horizontal and diagonal valleys. Although the Incas lived in north-south mountains, their capitol was in a wide, round mountain that got more sun than the rest, with a lake in the middle that made them immune to siege. And then there's the much fought-over Kashmir Valley, oriented more east-west than north-south. I got to thinking about this when somebody mentioned the poverty of the Appalachians being in part because their north-south "hollows" got very little light and weren't good for growing much besides grass (hence a lot of dependence on dairy farming and fodder-corn) though some wider valleys had some good farms. So I started to look at the globe for east-west mountains, to see what sort of people would live in them, and all of these had fostered small but strong, independent communities that could grow their own food and let the rest of the world sail by, and who got really uppity when the outside world insisted on intruding.

Sadly in the world the truth is seldom clear & even more rarely important. What is important is money & resources. The Azeri's have them, the Armenian's do not.

Yeah, but make no mistake. They had all the odds staked in their favor in the 90s with lots of Russians even fighting on their side. They had all the chances in the dozens of peace talks, but they ultimately played hardball and even renamed the territories surrounding Karabakh and started to fund new settlements to set facts on the ground (like another famous little nation in the wider neighborhood). All of this happened because of incompetence and arrogance. Now, they are paying dearly and nobody cares

This makes no sense! I can understand if you blame both sides. I wished they would have found a better solution. But I don't think Armenia was willing to negotiate until now. I hope they can exchange populations. Maybe exchange land. And create sustainable and stable borders. The borders now, help nobody! If it stays like this, it will cause another war in 10-30 years.

Hey Peter, resident of Colorado and I lived in Armenia for an entire year last year from September 22 2021- sep 26 2022. I also had the chance to visit Artsakh as well as Turkey. I have many contacts and friends in Armenia. As an American with originally no involvement and now completely well versed in the situation I appreciate your take and reporting on the situation. It’s important to mention the fact that Azerbaijan is a genuine dictatorship and their goal is to ethnically cleanse the entire region of Armenians. It’s also important to remember that pre Soviet times most of religion was ottoman but recognized as Armenian territory. Historically speaking Azerbaijan is a puppet state by Turkey to keep control in the area from Russia. Ilham alyievs father was a KGB agent who took control and the Alyiev family has been in control for years. Azerbaijan has been committing war crimes and true terroristic attacks on Armenians for years now and no one is really reporting that side of it.

there actually is an "international law". It is called the rules based system. The rules are written by the global corporations and they are enforced by the US military. The UN is useless becuase individual countries can never agree. But, global corporations can agree 100% on rules that increase profits.

this guy's getting really good at being a oracle. this particular video is better than any of his previous ones. here he's explaining the hardest to understand conflict zone in Europe. Ukraine is easy to understand. 2 sides. directly or by proxy but all participants gravitate into 2 camps. Ukraine is central Europe because the Black Sea separates it from Asia. we have Ukraine as a European struggle with only 2 potential winners. a finite war. a war which will end. but down south by Iran and Turkey there's 4 potential winners. no way will one side win because the other sides will continue fighting because Turkey and Iran will make sure. that conflict is going to used as a proving ground to find out who's running that part of the world. neither Turkey nor Iran respect Europe especially Russia. 3 sides immensely complicate the bringing to a end. Europe combined with the U.S. makes 4 sides.... a forever war. this video is impressive. masterful use of words.
