This was back when TNG was just something Dad watched after or during supper and I had no interest (I didn't come to enjoy any Star Trek until my mid to late teens), and it stuck with me for quite a while, to the point that I remembered very little of the episode or even Star Trek itself other than the frightening black goo.

After this episode was filmed, Jonathan Frakes revealed to Starlog magazine that Armus was really made of "14 pounds of Metamucil mixed with printer's ink." Several years later in a special titled "Journey's End: The Saga of Star Trek The Next Generation", he revealed that after taking his dip inside Armus, LeVar Burton came up to him and said "Frakes...I never would have done that!"

My personal theory: The race that created Armus was the Founders. Anyone else? Just a thought.
@travisjames1437
@travisjames1437 3 жыл бұрын
No. They originated in the Gamma Quadrant many millennia ago. The first know instance of the Founders being in the Alpha Quadrant happened on DS9. Remember, the “Titans” are now beings of beauty and had shed their evil, that’s absolutely not the Founders.
@sethmaki1333

Armus existed because the Vagrans shed themselves of malevolence. The Founders are too apathetic to fit this theory.
@lescobrandon8443
@lescobrandon8443 3 жыл бұрын
@@travisjames1437 Nice try, but it doesn't negate the possibility. This happened Eons ago. Also, there is nothing saying where the Founders evolved, or if they actually shed all their evil. Evil, like any weed, grows and spreads easily. Do you remember how Odo looked when trying to link with Kira after she let the other Changeling go? Seems to me, that could be considered "a being of beauty" to me. It also fits with the Founders personality. The see themselves as the good guys. Trying to bring order to the chaos. They are trying to do the exact same thing for the universe as they did to themselves. It's just eons of mistrust them gaining massive amounts of power has regrown that evil in them. Think about it. It's a possibility, and would be a great story.

It seems a fair few of people dislike this episode but I thought it contained some of the best elements of Star Trek. High stakes, a foe that is outwitted not by force but by an argument of inescapable logic and truth (in other words one of Picard's epic speeches), and finally an appropriately emotional conclusion; handled fantastically with the Data and Picard scene at the end. As a kid I was pretty much terrified of the creature throughout almost the whole episode, but in the end as they escaped, I felt tremendous sorrow and pity for it. I can count a handful of times a story has managed to do that for me.

One thing that always bothered me about the ending of this episode: if Picard destroyed the shuttle with a photon torpedo, which presumably has more power than a mega-ton nuke; wouldn't that have annihilated Armus as well since he was in the same area as the shuttle??? Or was it explained later on that he teleported himself to another location on the planet???

Honestly, the Skin of Evil reminds me of someone I once knew. Always was this person negative. Never had a nice thing to say about anyone. At least not to their faces. Would often make announcements just to sour people's mood. Would constantly lie and gaslight people into thinking their own friends and family hated them. It would harass, insult, berate, threaten, and anger people, and then wonder why no one wanted to be with them. They have threatened self-harm, just to see how people react. If this person was called out for their lies and hypocrisy, this person would fall back on, "I'm sorry. I was abused as a child." As if that nullifies all the bad things they've done. Like the Federation, we imposed a quarantine on this person. Effectively isolating them from our lives. No matter how much they whine and complain, we will not let them back. Regardless of how many years pass, or what life events occur. Because we know this one person will never change. Most people can see the error of their ways and change. This person will only change its skin in order to fit in. When given the chance, they will shed the skin and try again to ruin people's lives.

Considering how many 'ascended' races there were in ST overall, one has to wonder if there are other Armuses out theere, or if this 'shedding' method was common when a species moved up the ladder, so to speak. I can almost hear John De Lancie scoffing at it as cheating or a poor man's evolution. I also can't help but think of Piccolo and Kami from Dragon Ball, though these stories were made at just about the same time, plus The Dark Crystal predates both of them, and I doubt that was the start of the 'split-off ascension' trope.

Some people are saying that these titans were the shapeshifters/changeling/founders from ds9. There both sorta liquids but otherwise this doesn't fit. The founders haven't purged themselves of negative emotions feeling pretty intense disgust, contempt, fear, alienation and even hatred for solids. The founders lack much of the powers of Armus, being unable to generate forcefields or resist phaser fire. The founders live in the gamma quadrant and don't know much about the alpha quadrant. We also see at least one changeling who is able to fly through space and intercept a moving runabout so it's not clear something like a changeling would have gotten stuck on a planet. This Armus is a one off villain with psychic superpowers and a backstory of aliens who are long gone. It fits better in tng trek than ds9.

That last part is pure fanfic. Armus never met any heartless, Kingdom Hearts and star trek are not connected

Skin of Evil was a "shocker" to most Star Trek fans because Denise Crosby was a draw for the new show that was still trying to find its feet. Killing off a main character that soon was a key element that made fans sit up and take notice that the show was not going to always be a super-positive future looking show. I think Skin of Evil is one of the most underrated episodes of STNG.

A ways back I had an idea for a spin-off show based on this episode called Picard and Armus. Basically it was an alternate reality where Picard did take him with them. The Enterprise goes on all of its normal adventures but now Armus sits on the bridge in a giant planting pot, and is constantly scolded by Picard for his bad actions and comments.

There's a cautionary tale here for undomesticated sadists and sociopaths: Business and pleasure seldom mix. If you want an indispensable service from people who otherwise mean nothing to you, then it behooves you to beguile them until you're no longer in their power. Fun and games can wait. Had Armus feigned compassion to the crash survivors, ingratiated himself with the away team, and broached the topic of transportation with the utmost care, this story would have called for an even darker, more interesting outcome. Of course, Armus probably couldn't have soaked a transporter pad without bringing the series to a tragic end.
