Despite this episode's flaws, this scene was well shot. With it's hand held camera technique (conveying a feeling on being in an ER situation), the increasing sense of hopelessness as Beverly tries desperately to save Tasha whilst the other characters look on and the soundtrack continuing to build up the urgency conveys the inevitable moment when Crusher quietly announces the worst and most tragic outcome *"She's Gone......"* Gates McFadden nails the moment as she tenderly places her hand over Tasha's forehead and softly informs the stunned senior officers that Yar's injuries were far too extensive and that nothing could be done. Emotionally the scene lands exactly where it should. Leaving viewers (and the other characters) in a state of shocked disbelief that they have just lost one of their own......

She didn't know how successful the show was going to be or else she would have stayed. It was a large ensemble cast, she should have given it at least one more season. Plenty of other TV shows have had once minor characters given a lot more scenes as the series progressed. Even Deep Space Nine saw characters like Nog and Garak being given more attention as they proved to be popular characters, due in no small part to the actors playing them. But what can you do. While many might disagree with me the worst casting decision was bringing back Gates McFadden. She was dead weight, the worst actor on the show and therefor got very little written for her. Diana Muldaur was by far the stronger actress and people only disliked her because the writers made her antagonistic towards Data, in what was actually a great setup for a slow evolution of friendship that never got a chance to play out.

Rewatching this, I actually rather like Yarr's death. It just comes completely out of nowhere, one of the core ensemble, just bam! Dead. It shows how fragile life can be and highlights that death can strike anyone, pretty much any time, on the Enterprise (or anywhere, for that matter). Sometimes in life death is sudden and unexpected, and I like that on display. Not that I'm reveling in death, quite the contrary. But I do like how dangerous it makes the galaxy feel in this scene.

She shouldn't have ran up to the blob, that was her mistake. See, Data and Riker were sitting back, they were smart. In the end it was her own steel-headed perserverence that killed her. You can imagine Data's thought processing: "Hm, if i go too close, it may present a danger. I shall remain back at a safe distance until an opportune moment arises" Riker, cool headed as always is also biding his time. Tasha Yar being herself rushes right into the fight gung-ho. It was just suicidal, no wonder she didn't last more seasons. The character was bound to get killed by rushing into dangerous situations like this full-on. Which frankly is against the way most crew of the Enterprise confront a problem; with patience, logic and rationality.

I saw the episode on TV when it was first aired. Yar was very reckless and paid the price for it. At this point, they have no idea what they're really dealing with. Yet she spouts off then says "we won't hurt you" arrogantly presuming they even can. Riker also failed here big time. He's the senior ranking officer of the team, not Yar. Given the unknown nature of the threat, he should have ordered her to STFU and stay back.

Oh she sure did, once the show really found itself. Worf was just as much a one note character as Yar in the first season but would be developed into a much beloved character. Crosby has said that she would have thought twice about leaving if there had been more scenes like the one between her and Worf from the beginning of this episode. That's why Crosby took every chance she could to come back as a guest star. She was in Yesterday's Enterprise, Unification, and All Good Things.

There's a lot of criticism for how Armus turned out, but my earliest memory of this show is being freaked the hell out as a kid by the scary puddle demon. That's why this episode will always be a nostalgic favorite of mine. . .

That's right. In 1988, Jonathan Frakes told Starlog magazine that Armus was made of about 40 pounds of Metamucil mixed with printer ink. Later, he said that after filming his "sucked in" scene, LeVar Burton later came up to him and said, "Frakes, I never would have done that." :D

Yar became the most important character in the franchises history because of her time travel. The conundrum is did Sela exist at this time because alternate Yar didn’t exist at this time (or did she?).

There is an uncredited actress with grey or white hair appearing as a medical assistant when Tasha Yar is taken into the sick bay. It is too blurred in this video, but in watching the episode on television, I believe the actress is Grace Lee Whitney who played Yeoman Janice Rand in the first 8 Star Trek episodes.

Actually, Denise Crosby originally auditioned for Troi and Marina Sirtis for Yar, but for some reason they wound up switching roles. Add to that, Crosby felt that her character was being underdeveloped and wanted to leave the show. Thus the death scene here.

"We're from the Federation. We're here to impose our moral superiority on you, through violence if necessary." "Oh really? Bring it, human." What happens when Starfleet runs into being(s) it can't bully? Star Trek didn't (couldn't) fully explore this theme (it would threaten the whole authoritarian premise of the show), but I applaud this attempt, however hobbled, to show the narrative going sideways. All things considered, it is astounding this show made it on air. The 'good guys' win in the end though!

The main problem with this episode: TASHA WHO TAKES MARTIAL ARTS DIED BY BEING THROWN BY AN OIL MONSTER, WHILE RIKER LIVED BEING DRAGGED ON THE GROUND, AND DROWNED IN ITS OILY GOO! HOW DOES THAT WORK!?!

Tasha dies from brain's damages due to armus's powers, not from her fall or some neck's break. All martial arts in the world won't help her. And for Riker, Armus wished to torture him, not killing him. You have your explanations.
