On May 17, 1995, an Army Veteran by the name of Shawn Nelson, stole an M60 tank from the San Diego National guard in Kearny Mesa. For 23 minutes, San Diego was put on notice as Nelson plowed through dozens of parked cars, street signs, utility poles and fire hydrants. Authorities scrambled to stop the rampage. Even requesting a Cobra Attack Helicopter from the United States Marine Corps in Camp Pendleton.
Shawn Nelson suffered a series of unfortunate events ranging from divorce to grief, to financial and physical suffering- sending the once loved family man down a nihilistic path. By 1995 addiction took over and Shawn Nelson was but a shell of his former self.

Getting shot of being in an enclosed tank when a flash bang or to goes off inside? I can't imagine turning lose a Cobra attack helicopter on a stationary M-60. One errant round and countless people could have been killed or injured. The tank dude wanted suicide by cop and received his wishes.

These type of people make judgements purely dependant upon the outcome presented before them. Incapable of imagining the scenario where thepolice don't shoot, the tank breaks free, and potentially dozens of people are injured and/or killed. In that scenario these same people would be saying "why didn't they shoot him when they had the chance". Feel bad for the guy cos his life just fell apart, but when the dog bites you gotta put it down.

I'm amazed at how people really thought shooting this guy was not justified. I'm amazed they even gave him the opportunity to surrender once the hatch was opened. Kudos for that level of restraint. That woman wouldn't be so heartbroken for the lunatic who just died if that tank had been barreling toward her person or property.
@Cyril29a
@Cyril29a Жыл бұрын
It is absurd, I would argue that the police showed too much restraint. I mean he could very easily have been armed in the tank and killed the officer who opened the hatch. It is ironic that police will shoot a kid eating a burger in his car but not a man attempting to drive over cars on the highway in a tank. The fact that some people see his death as unjustified proves that there will always be a contingent of people who are fucking stupid.

Everyone always had the opportunity to surrender if they in fact surrender. Even a serial killer. Its not like the cops can place him on his knees and execute him. Cops are not judge jury and executioner. I do think many people deserve executioner but we have to do our due diligence in court first.

When I was stationed in Germany in the early 1980's, a tanker stole an M60 and did a similar rampage through a German town. He tore into buildings, cars (narrower streets) and cobblestone roads. He was cornered on a bridge, turned the gun and back over the railing into the water. For whatever reason, he didn't fire the main gun. During the Cold War, the tanks (at least the one near the East German border) carried their combat load.

Great fairy tale. I'm from Germany and nothing like that happened here. That was in Austria and it went very differently. On September 18, 1994, 22-year-old contract soldier Gerhard Mikes prepares for an unusual trial. On June 8, out of lovesickness, he stole a 47-ton M60 battle tank from the Zwölfaxing barracks and flattened traffic signs, cars and rails on his 2-hour drive to Vienna-Simmering. He was sentenced to six months in prison and had to pay two million shillings, the equivalent of around 145,000 euros, in compensation. "But the tiresome story ended well, because nobody was injured in the rampage at the time," the judge justified the mild sentence the next day.
