I too remember this recruiting commercial. In the early 80's when I joined, some young soldiers questioned their reason(s) for becoming soldiers. I will admit there were times that I hated being in uniform. Those moments passed and, I was a proud, motivated soldier again. Throughout the years I served, until I retired, I wished the Army would have re-used this recruiting ad, just as it is.

@@PeteKay Now I have. IMO it's not a bad advertisement, just sort of generic. For one thing, if I were seeing that ad out in the wild, I would change the channel the moment I heard the country music start, even before knowing what the ad was for. (Forced myself to endure the whole song, so I could see the whole ad. It didn't get better.) For another thing, I don't find it very unique to the American experience. Soldiers in other countries also have hometowns with cute kids and happy couples and nice old people and yes, freedoms to fight for. What I like about "We Were There" is that it specifically addresses the history of the American volunteer who fought for freedom ever since Valley Forge. It references Patrick Henry with the line about sunshine patriots and summer soldiers, and draws a direct link between the citizen-soldiers of the past and those of today. I guess it's sort of the same way I prefer "The Star-Spangled Banner" to "America the Beautiful." ATB, lovely as it is, could be about any country. TSSB is about the United States of America, and can only be about America. My .02, you are free to disagree and say I have lousy taste. :)

To anyone that ever wants to bellyache about what's wrong with this country, economically, socially, or politically, I respectfully remind them to remember who it is that ultimately protects their right to do so. Remember, freedom isn't free, but there are plenty of men and women who are willing to pay the price so you don't have to.

Have to say again the Army should maybe consider bringing back the “We Were There” ad. Just seems that right now maybe needed for many reasons. Revisionist history often it seems to me makes individuals jaded or inclined to sneer at patriotism or sacrifices individuals have made. Going back to the men who stood there ground at Lexington to the present individuals have put themselves in harms way for a greater purpose. In my family there were men who had lifelong problems because of mustard gas in WW1, one in-law was. WW2 frogman who went into Normandy the day before D-Day to mine tank traps, my dad island hopped across the pacific, friends served in Vietnam. No point l suppose but they all must have felt they were needed

I see a number of positive comments here but you really have no idea what this recruiting commercial did - I joined in 1980, you only had to have a 6th grade education to join, half the troops were on drugs, there was zero morale, PT tests were a joke, and failing anything could be waived - and then came Reagan - within days, the minimum education requirement was raised to 10th grade and mandatory drug tests were instituted - discharges for drug use were automatic - the military was gutted like a fish - BUT, the new class of recruits were smarter, sober, did not have as many drug problems, were healthier, and were able to adapt to the technological and training differences that were rapidly being adopted. The veterans though, especially Vietnam era troops, were still somewhat disheartened because of the way they had been treated and the way the military had fallen into disrepair after the war. Then came this commercial, followed rapidly by our dustups with Qadaffi in Libya and overnight it was OK to say you are proud to be an American once again. Things were never the same.
