My Grandfather came to Minneapolis from Bergen as a young man and we always had lutefisk when he was alive. He ate it the way Arne likes it. Perhaps we should try making it again. Merry Christmas! Enjoy you so much.

We came from Minneapolis to California, so when my mother found, at the store, this wooden box with heavily salted codfish inside, she was very excited. I remember she soaked it a little while and then can't really remember what she did with it, but I remember we had potatoes, and the next day, she made mashed potato mixed with the leftover lutfisk and fried in a pan.. she called them potato patties. I love it all. You really made some beautiful dishes for us to get to know you better. Perhaps, someday, you'll show us how you make that pancake. It looks wonderful. Hope you enjoyed your great meals.

Coming from Trinidad in the Caribbean, we also have a salted cod dish we make often on Sundays and usually at Christmas called Buljol. The cod is soaked to remove the salt, shredded and prepared with chopped tomatoes, onion, oil and hot peppers and eaten on a type of bread. Some people cook it and this looks like a great way to try it. Also, LOVE the heart shaped pot!

Love love this episode, thank you for sharing a little bit of the Norwegian traditions. My dads parents immigrated from Norway to Minnesota and then to Canada. They settled in an area called New Norway, Alberta. I remember eating lutefisk and my German mother learned to make the best lefsa. I have carried on the tradition of making lefsa at Christmas time too. Would you know of any good resources in Canada for lutefisk? Now that I am more mature maybe my tastebuds would appreciate lutefisk now. Lol

I've only had the "jello" lutefisk. Glad to know the version that looks like fish! In Minnesota we butter the lefse and cover it with white or brown sugar. Being the good German that I am, I covered my lefse with potatoes and gravy. The Norwegians think I'm crazy! Have you been ice fishing yet?
@captainnibby
@captainnibby 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I'm of German AND Norwegian/Swedish descent... I eat the sugared lefse, or just plain or with gravy depending on my mood, but I won't touch the lutefisk mostly because of it's always like you said "jello". Pickled herring... different story though. And yes, I'm born and raised in MN too.

Love,love,love you two so much. Carlos as you know Christmas cooking normally is assigned to one person, what I mean each person has a special Christmas recipe. We have 4 children each year we celebrate Christmas at one of our children’s home and we all bring our special Christmas dish. As I was born in North Africa with an Maltese father, Italian mother, and an Australian husband we have a multicultural cornucopia of food and the grand children learn all about grandparents (us) and great grandparents Christmas traditions. By the way the fish looks like baccala, which is one of the dishes we have at Christmas.

Yummy! Thanks for cooking for us. I bet the house smelled divine. Lutefisk and lefse were staples in my Mum's family, and as you can imagine the house smelled of lye fish for a month. I mostly just filled up on the lefse. 😍 A few years ago I was cooking the lefse on the griddle, remembering my Mum and all the fun we used to have making those potato flatbreads.
