So true, it was and is the perfect pandemic 2020 film for the industry to acknowledge (since crews have been paired down now by necessity) ...so that maybe, just maybe some suits will see it and say 'god you know, you really don't need 70 people standing around on set'

There must have been a lot of waiting around for blue hour on this film. It looks incredible, natural soft midtones and deliberately underexposed silhouetted foregrounds. It's sympathetic to the landscape and adds to the overall tone of the film. Guy clearly knows what he's doing.

ha, seriously. I've lived a lot in Reno- I love the place, but I totally get the vibe they were going for. I've felt some of that darkness even though there is a huge about of beautiful sunshine. The autumn moods like they show in the film are when it really hit me living there during some down times.

I was so moved by the trailer for this movie that I immediately googled, downloaded the book and inhaled it in a couple nights. I am fascinated by this lifestyle - the good and bad. I think because I see myself in these people and that might be me in 15 years. I can't wait to see the film and I was thrilled to learn that some of the people in the book - Linda May, Bob Wells - play themselves in it!

I saw it. You’ll love it I’m reading the book next. I lived in my camper but my house was never far away. My life. My friends and family were all there. This so moved me. We can’t possible know what it’s like to not have our Cozy back up. Some people do have the back up of family and friends but some don’t. I think the world might be a bit kinder when they notice someone living in their car and just maybe not so judgmental. Some obviously make a clear choice to live this.

I learned more about cinematography in my first year camera assisting than in 4 years of university. There's a lot of good things about the old apprenticeship system, but everyone thinks they can skip that step if they get a degree. However, film school doesn't teach you the real way a professional set works.

But I wonder if you would be able to get the assistant job with no uni, no previous experience, nothing. I feel like it is a good starting point for the industry.

It's a beautiful film. But, did they NEED an Alexa (or multiple Alexas) to get these results? Was it just easier and faster to color grade the footage? Could they have gotten similar results on a Sony FX9, Ursa Mini, or Canon C300 Mark IIi? What about a video-centric hybrid camera like the Sony a7S III or Panasonic S1H? How much of a difference does the Alexa really make?
@thedchen3 жыл бұрын
Alexa has a more robust codec and build quality. The trade-off is it's bulkier and more difficult to handle. If this was purely a documentary I could see an argument for one of the cameras you mentioned (easier to use, less intimidating for non-actors), but in a relatively controlled shooting situation that they created, and for the particular image quality I think Chloe and Joshua are searching for, seemed like the Alexa was the right tool for the job.

@@kemalettinsrt That's why I didn't mention the Sony a7 III or Panasonic GH5...which are great KZfaq cameras, but that's about their limit. I mentioned lower-priced cinema cameras and a few hybrid cameras that are exceptional video cameras, most of them approved by Netflix. (The Sony a7S III isn't but should be since the FX6 is, and the image is identical.) I'm not saying the camera doesn't matter. I'm not suggesting that you could do an equivalent job with a phone or even an ordinary DSLR/mirrorless. I'm saying there are plenty of excellent cameras in between, including some exceptional hybrid cameras, that really are capable of making professional films. You could spend $10,000 or $20,000 instead of $100,000, and I suspect the differences would be negligible.

Am I incorrect in thinking that the ultra primes were made to match the master primes in nearly every single way except for their T stop? Saying that ultra primes are between masters and super speeds, while technically correct, doesn't seem to be very accurate since they are so much closer to the masters and really don't lend any character to the edges of frame like the super speeds do. Let me know what you think!

At 1:17 - when you let the computer blur the background for an artificial bokeh & it misses the openings around the monitor & thru his left fingers - LOL You’d think a video about cinematography would use lenses & f-stops do the background blur optically & not digitally with faulty AI; it sorta diminishes credibility

For me cinematography didn't work. It was ok to watch this movie at home, but I can't imagine watching it on the proper big screen of the cinema. Cinematography felt very small, maybe it was by design to make it feel vulnerable, but I couldn't wrap my mind around it, is it documentary? is it home made movie? are they acting? are they improvising?
