Late Saturday morning at 11:50AM, Northampton County 9-1-1 struck out the box for a working house fire at 103 East 1st Street in Northampton Borough. The additional info they gave to the responding chief was that the caller was reporting a working fire in the house and that people were trapped. The Chief while responding, had the county strike out the 2nd alarm.
A man reportedly escaped through a window on the second floor to escape the fire. When firefighters arrived, they found fire venting from the front and back of the home.
Here is video from Mike Nester who was in the front of the house:

As a former firefighter of 35 years plus, both paid and volunteer, I love watching videos on fires. I guess it’s because I miss the brotherhood, training and putting the wet stuff on the red stuff. I miss saving life’s first, and saving property second. What I don’t understand is pre-connect hoses were brought into the service to allow firefighters to quickly pull a hose off the truck on arrival, get it charged because it’s already “ore-connected”, is an expeditious fashion to allow a quick knockdown of a fire, slowing the spread of the fire, and allow firefighters a quicker, safer entry for search and rescue, if needed. Video after video, I see arrivals, I see firefighters pulling pre-connects, then waiting forever for the engineer to charge that line or lines, so an attack can be made, while the engineer connects the feeder line from the hydrant. Why does it take forever on a lot, I’m talking what seems a majority for the P-C to be charged? Are engineers waiting for feeder hoses to be connected? If so, why? All are typically carrying a water tank just for that purpose! If protocols say wait until a feeder line is connected before charging a P-C, then why have a P-C? That’s why P-C’s are usually an 1 1/2” or typically a 2”, so you aren’t draining the tank so fast. Crews should be able to connect a feeder hose before the tank is empty! Ok, rant over, although I don’t consider it a rant, it’s a question as to why. And it may be me, but that’s my observance.
@jaybee6806
@jaybee6806 5 жыл бұрын
Louis McCluer I agree with you. I watch video after video and what I see that could be a quick knockdown ends up turning into an unfortunate situation. Here in Hawaii we live with our windows open all year long so, we train to get water on the fire first thing (tank to pump) 750 gal. tank with 2- 1 1/2" pre connects at 185 gpm. In less than a minute we have water on the fire. Hard from the yard, reset the fire, transitional attack is all water first. I shake my head when I see pike poles and hooks being taken off the truck but no hoses.

Goodmorning everyone. Looking at video of fires in the USA I always see a great deployment of forces: many men and many vehicles on the spot. But I also see little speed in extinguishing the flames. Watch this Italian video and then comment if you want: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gruFrLliyr7ce4k.html

That’s how I started, except we called our program Cadets. Back then we were a public safety department, which was both firefighting and police under one director. Cadets were from 14-18 years old. I started when I was 14, ended up being in it for over 40 years. Volunteer firefighter, cadets, reserves. 911 dispatcher then in charge of our 911 center, at the same time a reserve police officer. Then seasonal park ranger for our state, then a full time officer. My dad was a volunteer firefighter and reserve policeman, both of my brothers were in cadets, my youngest brother went into the Air Force as a security then K9 officer, then full time law enforcement.

Watching these videos I am reminded of when I was 16 our house caught fire in the kitchen. We all got out and my dad opened the back door to the kitchen and put out the fire with the garden hose. All the fire department had to do was exhaust the smoke from the house. After watching these I thank God for his quick action or we could hav elost the entire house by the time the fire department showed up and got all set up. It was a very old timber and lathe house built in the late 1890 early 1900s.

Why do people insist on commenting on firefighting videos in here as if they know what’s going on or can put it out better ? These guys are running in as common people are running out. That's because a lot of the people that comment with criticism ARE firefighters in their respective city's/states (and the occasional few who think they know everything). (Not that it makes their points or criticism always valid, but they are entitled to that) Like I for example, could voice my opinion about a few things that went on here, what could have, or should have been done differently, but I try to be considerate when posting. If you were in the fire service, you'd understand.

Flash Over I am in the fire service, and I know every fire is different, and that’s why commenting on what you don’t know cause you weren’t there is ridiculous. Each department has its own operational procedures and handles them to each fire specification. The ones who don’t know comment more frequently on here and the ones who are firefighters try to tell us what should have been done, but it wasn’t their fire

@@RepublicOfTheWolfPackXanthera Electricity, even at high voltages, like 345,000 volts, will not follow a hose stream back. A firefighter wearing proper PPE would have to be very unlucky or in a tangle of wires that for some reason had not shorted out when the insulation burned away to be injured by electrical shock during a house fire. It has happened, but so has being struck by lightning, the latter more frequently. Should the electrical supply line to a burning house come loose and fall, fire fighters at the scene should all be made aware of it, and leave it where it fell, command notify the power company, and avoid dragging or carrying hoses or other equipment across it.

@@RepublicOfTheWolfPackXanthera Actually, there is a table that has been compiled by laboratory testing that electrical conductors carrying 12,000 volts or less can be sprayed with tap water from a hose stream from as close as one inch. Most people don't know that pure water, rain water before it hits the ground, or distilled water, is an insulator. Pure water is never found free standing in nature. I was a volunteer fireman for 26 years, 16 as a chief officer. I've done the fire stream into 345k volts a number of times. I'll let someone else do the 12k volts, though. The table doesn't say what happens if you accidentally close to 7/8 in.! Curiosity has the better of me - how did you come by your user name??

I agree this was not perfect, but people don't truly realize how difficult it really is to fight a heavy volume of fire that is in the lowest part of the structure, or the highest, or both. Zero visibility in an unfamiliar building, you try and find access to the attic. Not as easy as you think.

Walter Baker - It is not as scary as you’d think, if you know how plain ammunition and fire reacts. Without the chamber/barrel to compress the explosion, ammunition is not that dangerous. Check out this KZfaq video that specifically tests what happens with ammo inside a fire. A loaded firearm in the same scenario is a different matter altogether. Because it has the compression it will shoot as if someone pulled the trigger. You don’t have the same concerns with plain old loose ammo. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abmcgrug3N2nZJc.html

Why in the heck did they have a brick home and cover it in vinyl siding? I always thought brick is better, but I also know the brick can actually like an insulated oven and burn up everything inside. Was the short 3 blasts a ammunition warning or the same as 3 long blasts of everyone get out? Doesn’t ammunition burning just pop and not hurt anything or is that incorrect? I mean I wouldn’t want to be near it neither but it is not going to shoot out of a house correct?

For sure those popping sounds were bullet casing (ammo) popping off. This had to be a Volley (volunteer)fire department. Number 1, the fireman in the beginning with the white helmet, starting spraying water from the outside, pushing the fire and heat back into the structure on top of the firefighters inside. The firefighters inside can be seen by the streams of water blowing outward. That A-hole would have done better bring that hose line in the back door and help push the fire out, or at least gave exposure protection. In Stamford, Ct, we would have stopped this fire dead in it's tracks.

Yea, we all know paid firefighters always save the house... Anyway, as for your lines and the white hat, don't forget this video is edited. Just because they were inside at one point doesn't mean they still were. They looked like they were trying to knock it down, then the next clip it's blowing out the windows again and looks even more intense than before. Leads one to believe they likely pulled out and regrouped because in later clips, unless they're all mashed all over the place, you see people entering again.
