One thing to bear in mind before going for plastic vanes for trad shooting is to check they are legal for your style. For some organisations they are not allowed in competition for certain styles, for example when shooting longbow or trad recurve feathers must be used n IFAA competitions and for longbow and American flatbows in NFAS. I dare say others will be the same too.

I've always crafted my own bows and arrows, usually i made arrows from natural materials such as reed. Over many years i tried many things to imitate natural feather fletchings, i just love them, but the downside is it slows down the arrow quite alot and quite fast. When i bought my first arrows, carbon arrows, it came with those rubber vanes of it. And i tried shoting them like you would shoot feather fletchings and it just was horrible. Then i realised i have to make my bow centered arrow rest, that would be the only way to shoot those arrows. And realised how much i love a centered arrow rest on the bow, it has so many advantages, you shoot more acurate and you can shoot different spines on the same bow. But i just didn't like those rubber vanes, are heavy, and i honestly found more durable the natural gose feathers than those rubber things. I've test many plastics and fifferent materials, and one of the plastics wich i really found fit for fleatchings are those white sheets wich you find backing the display of an led screen, is very light and very stiff and quite resilient. But didn't feed my purpose. The way i shoot plastic vanes on even a long bow you could do it. Is by instaling a little V foam things on the handle for the arrow to rest and the small v cut is for the fletching to pass through without hiting your hand. One day i had some money on my desk, i live in romania and here the money are made from plastic, and realised this plastic is really tough, it has to endure alot. is very light and flexible enoug. So i cut some bills and made some fletchings, is quite cheap, one bill is like 20 cents and you make flechings for like 4-6 arrows from one, depending how large you make the fletchings. I instal them like you instal those olympic style vanes wich use double sided tape, but i glue them with superglue. And is the best material i found so far for fletchings. I litteraly shoot those things into one of those hay blocks, and i can pull it through the tip on the other side and the plastic is the same. Due to the the fact that they are instaled canted on the saft, when they penetrate something they fold around the shaft, if you even help a little bit, they wrap around the saft and come clean on the others side. Very accurate and makes the arrows alot faster than feather fletchings. Basicly is plastic wich is printed but i don't know what kind of plastic, and where you can find that thickness but for me are the best fletchings i came across so far. And i would say the power of the bow doesn't influence it too much, i am shooting a horse style bow wich i made, is fully carbon and is about 90lbs in draw weight is very fast bow. I am pretty sure in the hands of a really skilled archer and a good bow these fletchings would group pretty well.

Perfect timing! I just went up in draw weight to improve my 50m shooting and was curious about spin wings since all I have are different lengths of feather fletchings.

I (and many others that I know) have arrows with a type of vanes that you didn't show, and they are about the size of the green vanes in the video, BUT they're not 1 solid piece. They are a mix with feathers, because the plastic is cut in strips from the outside towards the shaft (but not cut all the way through so they're still connected). You can buy these, no need to start cutting up the kind of vanes you have 😉 That way you have the moving away & bouncing back in shape like a feather, and weather has less effect because it's plastic But on the other hand, I've never seen anyone use this kind of fletching outside of popinjay archery, where we use blunts

Hi Jake love your videos learned a ton with them. But I have a question, should I use arrow wraps when fletching my arrows?
@pickin4you

You need to watch some so motion videos of feathers as they leave the bow. The reason they are more forgiving is because, in fight, they fold down next to the base completely until the are past the bow, then they expand back out again. So it’s not because they fold when they brush up against something. Most pro shooters who shoot in Vegas are shooting vanes, and not feathers. I am assuming here, but feel it might be that vanes being molded as they are, weigh closer to one another better than feathers, since they are grown on an animal. And like human hair, some of us has light fine hair and some have heavy coarse hair. I used to always shoot feathers indoors, but since I see more and more too pros shooting vanes, I am thinking I might be right. Vanes are more consistent from vane to vane.

I started with 4 inch feathers like a lot of guys did. But I have been shooting Trad Vanes 3" 4 fletch 90 configuration for several months and there is no comparison in my opinion.. My arrows shoot hotter than they did before and far quieter. Also handle wind better and no contact issues on the bow. For the hunters out there. I've shot two deer already this season and both were alert during the shot and I had ZERO movement from either animal before impact.. that is a big deal. AAE Trad Vanes for hunters in general at least, are the new gold standard IMHO.

Flex Fletch have been around for many decades. A super soft but super tough vane. They do not wobble in fight. They stay flat. You can take an arrow with these vanes, and put them in a jar of acetone and the vanes will come off, and you let them dry, and they are like new. No other vane does this. Everyone who tests vanes today, never test Flex Fletch for some reason. Maybe they just don’t know about them. Here you have helped design a new vane not knowing there are already super soft but tough vanes already made. Look them up. Many styles shapes and colors. I would never shoot any vane on a Trad bow and I am a long time Trad shooter. Feathers only. You have to find that high speed camera video showing how a feathers works in fight. It’s not what you think and no vane can flatten down out of the way like a feather can. So those who say that one vane works, cannot shoot a Trad bow properly.

I’ve purchased 12 carbon arrows with 3” plastic veins but i want to remove them and put on 4” feathers, will it compromise the arrow by changing it, they are 31” overall and 500 spine and they are ok out of an arrow rest but i shoot trad bows from a shelf or my hand, got some cheap arrows and want to make them better but as a novice i have a ways to go so thought id ask the community ✌🏻💙🎯

Hi Jake!! Your Wave pro vanes have arrived to Spain!! I'm very happy! Do you suggest me to fletch it right helical, left helical or straight?? I watched in your video that you suggest helical, but I don't know if left or right is better for me. I'm right handed and shoot recurve olympic style with carbon arrows 700 spine. My limbs are 36 pounds. Thanks in advance,

Since feathers are much lighter than vanes, do you find that perhaps you might need a stiffer spine if considering using vanes instead. Or is that a non issue, especially when considering bareshaft tuning?

great video, question does it matter if it rotates clockwise or counterclockwise? I draw left hand and someone told me that I should put left spinning wings, but it seems that there is no difference as the arrow starts the spinning after leaving the bow and at that point it does not matter if it's spinning clockwise or counterclockwise, what do you think? Thanks in advance!

As far as spinnwings or similar vanes, use the correct handed ness to your shooting, vanes it is up to you. I like to fletch to the natural spin of the arrows.

thoughts on using long spin wings on x10s for indoors, say a 100mm or 70 mm spin wing? would that work in theory and lead to better groups indoor or would you not recommend that?

Hi Jake, I have been trying your WAV Pro vanes on my AC/E’s. You recommend a helical setup. My question is how much helical? I can 3D print a helical fletching jig that can pretty much give me ridiculous amounts of helical such that from the rear it looks like an outboard motor prop. Is there a point at which it can be too much?
@JakeKaminskiArchery
@JakeKaminskiArchery Жыл бұрын
Depends on many factors like speed, mass weight of the arrow etc. Start with 3 degrees and go from there. My recurve arrows at 365 grains going 204+ fps I was running 8 degrees of helical for 70m shooting and it was dialed in!

Yeah, they are meant to be glued on. Sorry about the double sided tape not holding, I haven’t tried that yet. Try giving them 24 hrs to “set” as the bond of the tape will increase. Make sure you are using the stuff with the pink release tape or VHB tape, that might work.
