*RECIPE WRITTEN* I've made this so many times so I'm gonna put this here for me and you guys 💕 Don't forget to subscribe to her because everything she makes is DELICIOUS -2 cups of long grain rice -1 15oz can of pigeon peas/gandules with the liquid -2 table spoons canola oil (I use any neutral oil) -1 teaspoon of salt -1 package of ham concentrate -1 package of sazon -1 teaspoon of Cumin -1 teaspoon of Oregon -3 tablespoon of sofrito -2 cups of water 1. Place canoil oil in pan along with sofito untill it darkens 2.Add remain seasonings except for salt and stir 3.Add the gandules with the liquid and let it boil 4.Once it starts boiling add the rice and mix 5. Add 1 and 1/2 cups of water (more or less if needed, measure with your heart baby 6. Add a teaspoon of salt (Again measure with that heart baby more or less if needed 💕) 7. Leave your stove on medium high untill majority of the water has boiled out 8. Turn the rice lower it to medium and put a lid on it for 15 mintues 9.stir put back for another 10 mintuesamd serve

I'm not Puerto Rican but I grew up in a neighborhood called Sunset Park in Brooklyn, NYC where Boriquas rule the roost. All of Ida's dishes that I've made so far have been beyond tasty. Definitely transports me back to dinner at many an Abuela's household. Her sofrito recipe is my go-to when I want to be reminded of the bold, authentic flavors inherent to Caribbean Latin dishes. Thanks Ida!

You know, i am all American. in my younger days my friends would invite me to their house for some rice and beans, P.R. style. The smell was AMAZING!!! thru the years i've picked up on ingredients here and there to finally hear my kids say, mom that was delicious. I reviewed your video and prepared my rice the exact same way. OMG, there was the smell i've been missing all this time! I was missing the oregano and the cumin. Thank you soooo much. Now i have to figure out how to slow the kids down while they are eating it. Oh, and btw, i've watched other videos of arroz con gandules? Not the same, and goodness, to much work. hehe. thanks again.

My arroz con gandules always comes out watery, bland or both, and I always use the Goya recipe from the can. I'm going to try your recipe for sofrito because mine comes out differently every time. When I ask my mom for help, she just says, "Taste it. What does it need?" 🙄 So helpful lol My grandmother lives in NYC though, and my parents didn't teach me Spanish, so it's very difficult to communicate with her now that she's 90.

Thank you so much for this recipe, Ida! I've been enjoying arroz con gandules for years, but always in restaurants. I tried this recipe tonight and followed it exactly, and it's delicious! I did end up using a total of 2 cups water (spoon trick worked!). I also made your from-scratch sofrito recipe prior to making the rice. The clerk at the grocery store told me that aji dulce is currently banned from import into the US, so I bought a bag of Sweeties (tiny sweet bell peppers) and he said that would work. The aroma is fantastic. :) Thanks again, I'm definitely going to try more of your recipes this weekend.

I added an extra can of beans (2 cans total), an extra tablespoon of sofrito and extra teaspoon of oregano. Still used the 2 cups of rice and only needed 1 1/2 cups of water. It came out delicious. Now I have the recipe thank god! Btw... I used the green “Culantro cooking base” (softito) by GOYA. Didn’t taste any different. ❤️ Thank you!

Yeah, the first time I made this I didn't cook my sofrito enough, and I didn't have the ham packet. It was very good, but not quite there. Did everything the 2nd time almost to a T of her instructions and it was fucking phenomenal and had the right color!

Looks yummy. I love Arroz con gandules. I noticed you didn't use salsa de tomate, interesting. I wonder if it tastes very different without it.
