Here I finish servicing a watch belonging to my mom - a ladies' Swiss cocktail watch from the early 20th century. The unmarked movement is very worn and not very high quality. I made a bushing for the dial side of the centre arbor. However, as the final timing results show, I probably should have done the other side too. Despite the poor timing results it's a lovely decorative piece that will impersonate a timekeeper over short intervals. I also discuss oiling in some detail.
P.S. Apologies for the degraded sound quality for several minutes in the middle of the video. I have just sent an angry email to my landlord and I am positive nothing will disturb my work ever again.

Lovely little watch John. Thanks for this video, it encourages me on a 1919 watch I’m working on, that hasn’t gone quite to plan so far. I’d love to see more of the difficult and more interesting stuff when you do it.

This is so cool John! What do you mean by tracing? Are you looking for signs of overbanking? Also, how were you able to eyeball 270 deg of amplitude? Super powers! I always have to use slow mo video to determine amplitude!

Hey Jimmy, thanks! I think by overbanking here you mean rebanking, right? Overbanking is when the fork trips over while the balance jewel is out of the fork, in which case the jewel will be on the wrong side and the watch will stop dead. Rebanking is when it's making so much amplitude that the jewel is going all the way around and knocking the fork on the wrong side before returning. This will show up on the timing machine as an almost vertical line up, like the watch is gaining a ridiculous amount. I can eyeball 270 degrees of amplitude by looking where the arms appear as the balance changes direction. If the balance has 2 arms and they start out at 90 degrees to the line of centres (escape pivot - pallet pivot - balance pivot), then if the arms appear over the line of centres when the balance is changing direction, then you know it's making 90 or 270. Obviously with a 3 or 4 arm balance this isn't really possible. Hope that helps! I was being lazy - really I should calculate the lift angle so I can know the amplitude in the vertical positions as well.
