The legacy of imperialism is marred with suffering, yet in the softly illuminated halls of famous museum exhibitions, western countries flaunt their imperialist history by displaying plundered art. In this video, we explore the complex issue of art repatriation and its challenges.

🧡🧡🧡 It is so rare to find an art channel that speaks about this subject so candidly without falling back on the same tired old arguments that most museums rely on to keep their ill gotten gains. In America if the average citizen keeps or buys something after they found out it was stolen they are considered an accomplice and accessory to a crime and would be arrested, so why does big business and museums get to get away with it. They should not be above the laws of the land. If a citizen would face repercussions the big organizations should too if they refuse to return stolen property. I'm also tired of some who believe that the items are safer in the museums than the country it belonged to, like those items hadn't been safe and taken care of for hundreds of years before they were stolen. Also, no place is safe from war or destruction as the Ukraine situation has shown us, so it is not an excuse to keep stolen property. The only reason they continue to keep the stolen artifacts is just because of pure greed and the devaluation of the communities they stole from.

I agree with both POVs. So I offer the following solution : return the artifacts to their country of origin and fill the empty spots of the museums with high-quality replicas. That way, the countries will have their historical treasures back, and the museums will still give us the opportunity to experience different cultures. With 3D scanners, 3D printers, holography, and VR, we have all the tools needed to represent as many countries and their art pieces as we want in a very interactive and engaging way. :) Nobody loses. For example, one small statue in the African Section is just a small detail for the British museum, but it's spiritually, culturally and personally far more important for the people from the country it originated from. In addition, I always give Western Art more attention when I visit the museums in Western Europe because.... I'm in Western Europe, I'm in the mood for it. Just like how I would like to see more Ethiopian Art when I visit Ethiopia, etc. If anyone sees a problem with such a solution, please let me know by commenting. :)

If the countries of origins want their art back, why don’t they ever ask for it to be placed in their museums? It’s only activist groups that want the art back, not the general populous of groups. War and imperial spoils are just that, the conquered peoples belongings given as tribute. The East has many artifacts of the west as well. So in the end, it doesn’t matter because museums are to elevate and teach a people. I think the West has become soft and too apologetic of its past for the name of virtue and peace. This is just my opinion.

Within a museum is an entire legacy, home to all sorts of timeless cultural treasures. Detailed records for every item and robust security policies in museums should be a priority. That way, newspaper reports of thefts of artifacts can be prevented from occurring before they decide whether to return their ill-gotten gains or keep them. Maybe there are too many of them to check? The theft of lots of artifacts results from "inventory failures", I heard. It's like taking vitamin C as a preventative measure before catching a cold. If you've already fallen ill, then you should try to recover from it.😏

In my opinion, any art historian worth their salt will not just forgive you for pointing out how museums flaunt the imperialist history of western nations, but agree with you. This issue was a big part of my curriculum, in any case.

Everyone has creativity inside of them, but those of us who let go and create art realize that our art has no owner.

Curious Muse hurt it's own reputation with this video, someone can always say something was stolen from someone else. The tea pot analogy, someone could always say I got the tea pot unfairly.

I agree; so I should feel guilty for visiting a museum now??? Or should we be boycotting museums??? I was really offended by this video.
