Frankly, to my ears Arthur Lee is much better than Kurt Cobain, and Love is much better than Nirvana. Yet every day folks rarely hear of Arthur Lee, while Kobain is mythologized and Nirvana heralded as the "sound of a generation." Tells you something. All I know is, Arthur Lee was brilliant and unique and deserving of more accolades for his accomplishments than he received during his lifetime.

Alone Again Or....absolutely classic song....the whole album is brilliant. Man, whatever that was in the water that produced this generation of American and British musicians, I sure wish we could find it again. They were absolutely extraordinary. The list is endless...Lee, Hendrix, Page, Townshend, Dylan, Lennon, McCartney, Young, Gilmour, Barrett, Joplin, Gaye, Mayfield, Waters, Marley, Fogerty, Plant, Bonham, JPJ, Davies, Mitchell, Aretha, Wonder, Wilson.....truly unreal.

Yep I'm sure glad they were all in my life back then people had imagination & time. They wrote the lyrics they put it to music and when it was an excellent song they all went around the world playing in so many places. They don't do that today. And they had real instruments and learned to use them in amazing ways creating a sound so good.

On this tour Arthur played a small club here in Crewe ( the much missed Limelight) the owner had never heard of him and was totally gobsmacked when every ticket was bought in a matter of a few days with people coming from all over the country, and what a night it was ! My Brother and I crushed together with an audience encompassing teenagers ,septigenarians and everyone inbetween, luckily later managed to get a S/board recording of what was probably the finest gig I ever attended.

Thank you for filming and recording this performance. I saw Love many times in the 60's in Hollywood. They were my favorite band at the time. Live performances always sounded like the albums. Their 3rd album, Forever Changes, stands up to all greatest albums, including Pet Sounds, and Sgt Pepper. So unknown to many, he was one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

Waaaay before Hendrix, there was Arthur Lee. Imagine going to the Whisky in 1967 and seeing this, preceded by the local house band, The Doors. Happened often. And people wonder why the 60s were considered so special for music.

An awesome little mini-set of songs. During my psychedelic 60's days, I only heard Little Red Book and, other than that, I was really not aware of the output of Love. Alone Again Or is right up there with best work of any artist of that period (Doors, Beach Boys, Spirit, Jimi Hendrix, Beatles you name it). Actually written by Bryan MacClean and sung here by Arthur (Bryan on the original version). An awesome post of the music of two guys and a band that frankly never got its complete due. Thanks. RIP Bryan and Arthur.

Love and the Byrds were the sound in Los Angeles when I was growing up here. Of course the Byrds went on to much larger fame, which I never understood why Love never really did. So I had the chance to see themm several times in the 60's and early 70's as well as three more times after Arthur's release from prison before his death. The last shows he did along with this clip were incredible. Arthur never sounded better than he did the last few years of his life.

The Johnny Schools interview tells us that Arthur didn't want to travel but crucially , being a mixed race band they could not play to mixed audiences as the south USA was still segregated despite the civil rights bill of 64 65. So they stayed in California.

Arthur loved music so much, plus he was a real musical genius, and humble all he wanted was to play music, all he could think of in jail, some of the top producers even couldn't believe how naturally talented he was. He loved his group, music and entertaining others selfishly. Him and Brian Wilson is about the only others like him.
