Making the most of your own generated solar energy is always key. Sometimes it can be difficult to know exactly how much excess power you are producing, and more importantly, knowing exactly what to do with that power to optimise it best. In this episode of Artisan Electrics Jordans shows how the MyEnergi Eddi internal brains can be utilised to provide accurate data, in order to know what to do next to fully optimise your solar set up.

Friendly advice as an electronics engineer. Always screw the antennas to the product before even powering it up, even if you are not planning to use the wireless functionality. This applies to all products that have antenna connections. Failing to do so, can permanently damage the wireless module inside the product...
@hks-lion
@hks-lion Жыл бұрын
How does it damage it?
@andrewsweet43
@andrewsweet43 Жыл бұрын
@@hks-lion When you ommit to connect the antenna, all the RF power used to transmit the signal reflects back from the connector to the radio module, causing it to heat up and cook itself. Technically this happens due to the poor impedance match between the radio module and the (non existing) antenna. RF energy is a bit weird in that regard. If the path that you design it to travel has an impedance that is not accounted and/or designed for, bits of RF energy reflect from that point backwards and cause problems. In general, this phenomenon gets worse, by increasing the RF power output of the module. For example in handheld VHF/UHF radios, if you leave the antenna unconnected and push the transmit button, the RF module (which transmits usually around 5W of power) usually destroys the RF module in a fraction of a second...

Another consideration is that an exposed antenna connector is a great magnet for accidental human body contact, with associated ESD concerns. Screwing the antenna on immediately removes the threat of component damage, should the product have no (or insufficient) ESD protection on its RF ports.

The Eddi is an excellent piece of kit. Our supplier just started charging in the region of 15p per kWh for gas, but they charge approx half that for electric during a certain period at night time. Needless to say our Eddi is now heating our hot water at night time, and the solar is doing the rest during the day time.

Having recently installed the Eddi as an amateur DIYer, this was one of the more reassuring Artisan videos in that it mimicked every stage of my install. Pleasant surprise that the Eddi came with an internal Hub, the faff with the WiFi, the failure to turn off the Eddi's own CT inputs and the discovery of a long lost screwdriver in the loft! But at 500 quid including the Harvi, seems an expensive bit of kit for a bit of basic monitoring. Surely the Solax inverter reads solar generation and house consumption/export?

When we bought this house it came with an outdoor charging point on the driveway, which we were happy with. Now that I know a bit more about what products are and do, it turns out it is a Rolec EV charge point but it's basically an outdoor socket with it's own little circuit. I would definitely be interested in getting a MyEnergy Zappi when we do get an electric vehicle, any change you can do a video on one of them?

I keep thinking about one of these to use some of the spare solar I gift to Octopus in the summer ! With the day rate being 5 x the night rate the ultimate sin is to import at the day rate so having fine control over loads as the sun comes in and out is the trick bot not sure if this can do that? For example I can vary the car charger to low / medium / high but that's not really variable enough. I suppose the easiest thing would be to add batteries but they are expensive. The ultimate solution is to force the Energy companies to invest in storage and pay consumers for spare solar thus connecting the private solar network - which is already connected of course !

You may want to try having a spare WiFi router/access point in your van, alongside with a long Ethernet cable. Thereby you can always relay customers WiFi to your construction site and update devices on the wall. You should just use the same SSID/Key (Name/Password) on this access point, as the customer does on his WiFi, which makes the devices connect to the original wifi, as soon as you switch of your temporary relay station 😉

The antennas are not optional for RF circuits. Sure, modern modulation schemes mean the reception process is much more reliable but without the antennas, there's no impedance matched output to the RF amplifier, nor the input receiver circuit. Remember old TVs and the static on the screen when you didn't have a cable plugged in, same thing! What I kind of find amazing is the amount of electronics on that EDDI board for what should be a simple bit of logic and a relay output for the immersion. Looking at the PCB, I presume this is all on the AC side which is nuts but I guess the issue with working with what people already have installed.
@wino99999
@wino99999 Жыл бұрын
It's not a relay output, Its a PWM mains output which is proportional to the spare available watt's from the solar. i.e. If only 100w is being exported, then the output will be switched on for 100/3000 of time and off for 2900/3000 of time for any given period in order to input 3kW into an immersion without clocking up the electricity boards meter.... the meter has a resolution of 3600 joules of energy, so as long as the 3kW load is switched on for less than the 3600 joules, no unit will be measured. The unit then has to measure how long the Solar PV takes to make up for the switch energy (
@JasperJanssen
@JasperJanssen Жыл бұрын
@@wino99999 3600 Joules is 1 Wh. Just because the meter display measures in Wh in no way means that you can import/export a Wh at a time over multiple cycles of the mains and the meter won’t notice - the import and export displays will notice that. You’re gonna have to PWM at well over 50Hz to make this work. Luckily doing PWM at higher than mains frequencies is trivial.

@robfodder5575 Жыл бұрын
@@wino99999 Thanks for the explanation, really helpful, as soon as you mentioned PWM the board components made sense esp. with regards to suppression (EMC must be fun!). I suppose I was attempting to understand the way some of this kit works together and that, if the system was developed from scratch, wouldnt it be simpler to have a DC based system around the charge state of a battery. In short, I presume the unit is solving the problem where the solar output is converted into AC immediately and you have a system which sends energy back to the grid (therefore the configuration and logic to determine what todo is more complex). This is contrast to a much simpler DIY system Im thinking of installing based around a Victron Multiplus with LIfepo4 battery and no ability to feed back to the grid i.e. if the charge state of the battery is full AND load below a set amount AND water below a certain temperature, dump the excess into the water.
@wino99999
@wino99999 Жыл бұрын
@@JasperJanssen The Electricity boards meter does not clock up any usage provided you use less than 3600J of energy, so what I was trying to explain was this is how these appliances work by turning on for a fraction of a second or cycle if it needs to, to prevent 1 Wh being recorded, then the equivalent amount needs to be exported to cancel out the use of less than 3600J fired into the immersion heater element before again doing the same ..... Otherwise turning on a 3kW load will always record against the meter if its say being switched by a relay!

It seams quite weird to me to install an Eddi to monitor an already smart Hybrid inverter wich additionally is able to separately monitor PV and battery power. If they connect something to the Eddi, it will always drain the battery first after the battery is full and it detects grid export.

The Eddi isn’t set up correctly, it should show the power generated by solar as well as house consumption. You can also use the outputs to supply any resistive loads, like a heating element in a water cylinder. Rather then just giving this back to the grid you can install an outlet specifically to power an electric heater (resistive only) and any unused power would partially heat a room. It must be a resistive load as the eddi changes the voltage applied to the output to adjust the load available.

Bear in mind a lot of installers will be billing a lot for going up to location and on the roof, which can make installs with less panels feel like the price is bloated compared to bigger installs. I imagine more local installers will have a lower price for this. As a rough napkin calculation, give it one pound per watt peak for just the hardware, though there's a fair bit of variation.

My Eddi equivalent cost me around £100 (Eddi's cost £450-500ish fitted) I use no Gas except for the hob (around .5 of a unit for 6-8 months of the year) dependant upon weather and temp. I estimate I save £10-14 every month over that period tailing off over the autumn/winter and increasing again over the spring. Based on last years figures it works out I saved around £122 (actually more because I have realised my Gas price in the s/s is still 3.212p/unit!) Now I plugged in the new Gas rates it's going to be circa £200 a year ) - based on 5.71p/kWh for my gas.

@@wino99999 ah ok, fair enough. I'm actually wondering whether to go fully electric myself at some point, I think the time will come when the concept of a network of pipes supplying gas to individual domestic dwellings will be regarded as pretty antiquated. There was a video I saw on KZfaq that explained how heat pumps are so much more efficient than gas heating; personally I'd be keen to go that way myself, once the tech is more developed.

Wiring all this up is easy to me but no-one will touch coz it was not installed via an mcs installer? Niciec can go f itself battery storage and screw these rules.

Wow... so: 1) You didn't know the Eddi hasn't needed a Hub since 8th August 2) Trying to pair the WiFi with the antennas still in the box 🙈 3) Internal CT not disabled 4) Installing the Eddi below a coat rack, when it is explicitly says "Ensure the device always has adequate ventilation; do not block the vents or obstruct the airflow at the back of the unit". So the unit won't be covered in thick jackets and coats then 🤷‍♂ Won't be booking you guys 😜
